Legacy Surname

I'm really interested in learning about genealogy and recently learned that my great grandmother (my paternal grandfather's mother) was named Alice Legacy. She married Milton Paul Allen, and my grandfather had four sisters: Geraldine, Caroline, Annamae and Pauline. Can anyone help me trace this name further back? My grandpa (Milton Claude Allen) was born in 1926. Thanks!

I know this post is way late. I must have missed it years ago. You and I may be related. If your Grandmother was married to Joseph Legacy, then we are cousins. Joe's sister is my mom. They were born and raised in Maine. If you are interested in sharing info please respond. Hope to hear from you.
Cheryl

Irving William Legacy

I know this is a long-shot, and I hope someone out there can help. Irving William Legacy was my grandfather and my mother would like to know where he is buried before she passes on. I have been collecting information for my family tree for 15+ years and have never come across his name anywhere. This is what I know.
Irving William Legacy was born in July of 1917 in Quebec, Canada. He had one brother Edward. Their mother (Bernice?)was married 3 times. She left them in an orphanage to go overseas as a nurse. They left the orphanage when Edward was 14 and Irving was 10(so the story goes). Irving married Frances Isobel Grant in Sudbury, Ontario, and they had 4 children. Irving joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders during WWII. He left his wife and children somewhere around 1952 when my mother was 17(she is the oldest)and never returned. I have checked every online cemetery that I can find with no results. If you have ever heard of this man, please contact me.

Bonjour Evelyn,
Yes I did know the variant (dit) on the spelling. Jame's wedding record on the New Brunswick archives shows that.....http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/GovRecs/VISSE/Search.aspx?L=EN
I did not know the variant on the first name though. You mention the Lagace dit Migniers, I have briefly come across something along that line, but nothing confirmed yet. As I am waiting to find some info from an aunt that I have only known for 5 years! Do you know what area these Lagace came from in Quebec?
Some of the names in your line sound sorta familiar. My Father is from Bathurst, as his parents (James Lagace & Lousia Savoye dit Savoie) were married there too.
If you dont mind, I will forward this messege to your e-mail too, and maybe we can chat more.

Sincerely;
Corrina

Greetings,

You say you are new to this so I was wondering whether you were aware that Legacy is one of several variant spellings of Lagace, and that your ancestors are the Lagace dit Migniers originally of Quebec?

Also, did your grandfather speak French? If so are you aware that James in French would be Jacques?

I am a proud Bathurst Lagace through my mother's side as follows:

Andre Mignier dit Lagace & Jacquette Michel m.1668 Quebec
Michel Mignier dit Lagace II and Angelique Tibaut
Michel Mignier dit Lagace III and Marguerite Pelletier
Basile Mignier dit Lagace and Catherine Dube
Louis Migne and Madeleine Levesque
Francois Lagace and Mathhilde Boudreau m.1830 Bathurst
Joseph Lagace and Tharsile Pitre m.1862 Bathurst
Joseph Lagace II and Elizabeth Doucet m.1894
Adelard Lagace and M.Eveline Melvina Luce m.1924

Evelyn (Lagace) Theriault

I am researching my grandmother's family. She was Mary Elizabeth Brattin, nee Legacy, born 1899 in Washburn WI. Had siblings of William, Henry, Myron, Josie (married name Miller )and Chet Legacy. All I know is that her parents or grandparents were first cousins but don't know if the name was Legacy or not..

The family name was first Lagace, later to be Anglicized as Legacy. The family name was more precisely Mignier dit Lagace. In France they were just Mignier. My branch of this family arrived in Canada between 1630 and 1650. They came from St-Martin-de-Re, La Rochelle. La Rochelle is a town on the Atlantic Coast of France, southwest of Paris. St-Martin-de-Re is a little village on an island just of the coast from La Rochelle. Why did they emigrate to Canada? One might consider religious conficts, economic hard-times, or need to travel. Not sure. Michel Mignier dit Lagace (married to Catherine Masson) left France and came to Canada. I am the ninth generation to follow Michel. I live in Ventura, California far from the tough, austere life of Eastern Canada.

Hi jean-marie. My grandmother, Helen Douglas married a LeGacy in Canada. His previous wife had died and left him with children. She raised those kids and had 5 more, 1 male and 4 females. They lived in Boston and Brookline Mass. They adopted a child they found. His name was Arthur LeGacy. I believe he became a Doctor or Psychologist in the Chicago area. Helen's children were Lillian, Norman, Liberty, Jessie and my mother, Almeda LeGacy. Let me know if this ties in with your family. I am in Colorado.

Homer Adrian Legacy-Grace Keil--Minneapolis and California

I have been researching the Keil family. Grace was married in 1919 in Brown Co., Minnesota, to Arthur E. Nelson, and in 1920 they were living in Minneapolis. I found Homer Legace [sic] and family--wife Alice, sons Maynard and Howard--also living in Minneapolis in the 1920 census. Do you know when and where Grace and Homer married? Did they have children together? I found them both in the California death index. They died in Orange County, where several other Keil family members lived.
