Surnames: LEGASPI
hello everyone... my name is ernani and i have some information on the history of the Legaspy family name that may be helpful to all of you. the following is information i received from originofnames.com
The noble Basque family name Legaspi is classified as being of habitation origin. Habitation names are those family names which are derived from either the location of the town or village from whence he hailed. In some instances, a habitation name refers to a residence which was distinguished by a sign or engraving usually displayed over the door. In this particular instance the name Legaspi derives from the Basque words "Legar", meaning "galium, bedstraw", and "aspi", meaning "lower part". Thus, we can say, that the original bearer of the surname Legaspi would have been a person who dwelled near a place where this plant grew in abundance. During the Middle Ages, and before the hereditary family surname system was instituted, it was a practice to adopt a second name to be able to differentiate one individual from others with the same personal name. Variants of the surname Legaspi include Legaspia and Legazpi.
One of the earliest references to this name or a variant is a record of one Legaspi family, whose ancestral seat was in Zumarraga. The baptism of Maria Legaspi Careaga, the daughter of Pedro de Legaspi and Maria Martinez de Careaga, took place on the 14th of March, 1571, in the church of Santa Maria, Durango, Vizcaya. The Marriage of Maria Lopez de Legaspi and Juan de Ormaeche, was celebrated on the 11th of January, 1598, in the same place mentioned above, while Miguel Legaspi Corrano, the son of Hernando de Legaspi and Juana Corrano, was baptized on the 16th ofApril, 1613, in the church of San Miguel Arcangel, Otaiza, Navarre. The family name Legaspi has also been recorded in Latin America. We read of the baptism of Andres Avelino Legaspi Estrada, the son of Juan Legaspi and Ramona Estrada, which was recorded on the 10th of November, 1826, in Zacatecas, Mexico.
I have also included a copy of the Legaspi Coat of Arms / Escudo de Armas, so please check the attachment. you can obtain copies of this from originofnames.com.
