Yes, that name, if he is from the VA and/or MD areas, is from the same line. John Thomas Legg. I had all that stuff and recall his name. Anyone who came from that immigrant mentioned above has the connection. Someone told me that the one from out east is a different branch from ENGLAND, but is probably in the same 'tribe.' My immigrant came right to Virginia. I have stuff about him. I haven't looked up Ambrose for a long time, but I could go back and look at the stuff again on ancestry.com. I do have a membership and have had for quite a long time. My regular e-mail is: mlfoess@Gmail.com IF you check my book Web site, you'll see Thomas Legg and his son, my father, Percy WAPLE Legg. I have photos on it. http://www.ArmenianAncestryBook.com On my mother's side, I have Armenian ancestry as my Grandparents were immigrants who escaped the Armenian Genocide.
Hi Mary, it appears you and I have a very similar Legg story. I found out about my father when I was 17 and found out I was a Legg. Lately, I have been looking to understand the family tree. I had back to Joshua H. Legg, and then recently found Ambrose Legg as his father. I am now 42 and getting to know my roots. Not sure how or if we are connected, as far as I can see, the geographical trail looks something like this so far:
1800 New York, 1820s Ontario Canada, 1850s Illinois, 1870s Iowa, 1890s to today Wisconsin.

I though perhaps since Ambrose had sons named Joshua H. and Otis, that they could be related to Gershom Legg from Medham, MA, but not sure yet. He had sons named Joshua and Otis.

Any help appreciated.

James

Looking for information on Ambrose Legg's ancesteral line. Married Elizabeth Howland in Ontario Canada in 1826 and had several children before immigrating to Illinois around 1850.

First son was Ambrose Jr, and second son was Joshua H. Legg followed by Otis Legg. Suspect connection to the Joshua or Otis Legg from Medham, Massachusetts cica 1775, but cannot tie them together definatively.

Thanks

I have found a lot of stuff since then. My Leggs settled in the Virginia areas, Maryland, and, then, my immediate line lived in Wash., DC. DUe to unfortunate circumstances for my father, I was not raised by him and only found out who he was when I was age 42. THanks, Mary L. Foess

I am a descendant of Wiliam I, the Conqueror, but so are a lot of other people! Mary L. Foess, only known daughter of the late Percy WAPLE Legg. I also had DNA tests recently. Thanks

Edward Legg b. Shropshire 1831?

Hello,
I wonder if anyone is has this chap in their family, or know anything about him?

I'm presently writing about the Nothe fort at Weymouth, dorset, and part of that story is an Edward Legg who was working on the fort was seriously injured in 1862.

While searching for a bit more information about the chap, the closest I found was an Edward Legg born 1831 at Broseley Shropshire, who in the 1861 census is living as a lodger in Southampton, and described as a bricklayer, which would fit.

However, I also came across the marriage and death of an Edward Legg in Madely Shropshire,
The death being in the same quater, Jan 1862 at Madeley Shropshire.

Could this be my chap who was injured? Could he have gone home and died there? Are Madely and Broseley near each other?

Are there any sites that I could use to check more information? So that I could definitively link up the two men?

Would love to be able to find out what happened to the poor chap after his accident.

Many thanks,

Sue

My name is Brad Legg and I am the Great Grandson of Ernest Legg. Ernest is was the son of Theadore and Stella Legg. I beleive that Grandpa Theadore's first wife was named Martha Baker who was born in 1870 and died in 1895. Theadore Legg was the son of John Perrin Legg and Malinda Chastain.
According to what i have been told GG Grandpa Theadore and most of his siblings moved to Southern Illinois around early 1900 from Washington County, Indiana.

hmmm... strange. It's a mystery! I guess the 1851 census was not as complete as later ones, or the transcriptions are not as accurate? Very frustrating.

Could you give me the details of the Netherbury one, just in case? Does it say where he was born? In later censuses he is said to be born in Maiden Newton, or Hooke, or "Maiden Newton Hook"!

Do you have access to the 1861 census? His family were shepherds and agric. workers who seem to have moved around a lot - every child seems to have been born somewhere different!

Thank you for your time :)

I don't have any of those Leggs in my tree so far... will let you know if I find them! I have found Alfred in the index of the 1851 census, living in Cerne, Dorset, so I'll have to pay for some credits at some point and look him up :)

I also have Leggs and Hansfords in Dorset!

Georgeann Legg (my ggg Aunt), daughter of Thomas and Susannah Legg, married Robert Churchill Hansford, 1833 in Netherbury, Dorset. I have more on both families. Unfortunately, I do not have an Alfred Legg. Thomas and Susannah emigrated to America about 1830; sons followed them and daughters remained in England.

hi - old post, I know, but just in case you're still following this thread, I have Hansfords and Leggs in my tree from Dorset! Alice Hansford b.1850 and Alfred Legg b.1849 married in 1871 in Dorchester district. My g-grandmother was their daughter and youngest child.

I would love to know more about their early lives - Alfred particularly as I still don't know who his parents were.

ALFRED LEGG, b.1849, Dorset

Looking for early information on my great-great-grandfather, ALFRED LEGG, born in 1849 in Maiden Newton, Dorset. The 1881 census has him living in Tarrant Launceston, Dorset, with his wife (Alice, nee HANSFORD, b.1850) and several children.

I would really like to find out from the 1851 or 1861 census who his parents were. I have an old note from a fellow Legg researcher saying that his parents were Samuel and Sarah Legg, but I cannot find any evidence of this (and in one census they are living alone - 1861 I think).

Alfred becomes a shepherd and moves frequently with his large family. My great-grandmother was his 13th or 14th child apparently, when he was 48 and his wife 47! She was Elsie Lily Legg, b.1897 in Pimperne.

Would anybody with access mind looking on the 1851 or 1861 census to see if Alfred is on there? (There is another Alfred Legg, born in Mappowder, Dorset, the same year, which is a bit confusing! He marries an Elizabeth.)

I would be very grateful for any information at ALL on Alfred - he is the one person on my tree where I'm not getting very far with the free info... and would rather not order the birth cert until I've exhausted the internet :-)

THANKS in advance...
Lindsay

Samuel Jordan Legg was my daddy. He died in1931. I was 3 years old. I do not remember him at all. They were married in 1912 or 14.She didn't know that he had been married. She only knew he was from WV. After he died she wrote to WV and was told about his other family. She got letters from Rona Kinkaid until she died.I have a small snapshot of her.
When he came to Ga. he dropped legg and went by Sam Jordan.
He ran a sawmill in Ga. and then they moved to Ala. where he died in 1931.We moved back to Ga. after he died. I had one brother and ond sister. They are both dead.

My grandfather was Samuel Jordan (Legg) . He dropped his last name and started a family in Alabama in the Twenty's . My Dad was supposed to be named after him but his aunt filed the papers and he was named Samuel Clifford Jordan. I am a junior. My grandfather died in , I believe, 1931 of complications of diabetes . That's the best diagnosis I can glean from the stories. It is rumored that he had a third family , (Mercer)in Georgia but that is unsubstantiated. I hope this helps. If only we had a record of the marriage of William & Susanna, it should tell us where she was born, or from.

I'm still stuck right where I was back in 2002.:-)

For Susannah, the surnames I find recorded were Merrit, Marrid, Marigh, Maarwoet, & Maroet.

I did notice another woman in the Kingston marriage records (# 63 & # 135) who was variously called "Betti Marrits" and "Elysabeth Morel."
Have you come across information that might reveal the names of Susanna Merrit's parents.
The only info I have from England is what is on Ancestry.
A kind person in England found the Baptismal records and sent them to me. Your line is probably connected to mine some how...but I have no idea. my Edward that came to US, we were told came from Manchester, but could not find any info there, also there were other children but do not know the names, there was suppose to be a brother that stayed in England that was a cabinet maker and suppose to have had his own store. I would love to be able to make more connections in England...or US either..

We know there are two extended lines...Edward came to US with a brother we think his name was either William or Richard...have not been able to find a connect there. It seems that Edward moved south after the Revelutionary war, which he fought in...and his brother stayed in the north. So for the north deny kinship. We also believe there is another Legg line besides these two, but have not really found out for sure.
