I am looking for any documentation that will connect my Sarah Legge b 1812 in Shropshire - I think Shrewsbury area-
to John Legge b Bishops Castle 1780 d 1859 Lydbury North. John Legge was married to Sarah Bright b 1784 Lydbury North d 1858 lydbury North. I think Sarah is their daughter but cannot find definite proof except through word of mouth of older relatives who are no longer alive. Also, Sarah Legge married David Davies in Berriew Wales Jan 14, 1839. They immigrated to US in 1847.

Hi, my name is Janice (Weaver) Kearney. My maternal grandfather is Charles Legg (changed to Legge in America), whose father and mother match those you show (Alexander and Mary Christie). I've been researching this part of our family for some time now. My family tree is on Ancestry under Charles Legge.

Charles came to America, joining his older brother Daniel, in early 1900's. He traveled back and forth to Ireland several times and married an American girl in 1917 (my grandmother). They had six kids; five survived into adulthood. All are deceased now except my mom, who's 80 (Katharine, "Kay" Legge, who married my dad, Robert Weaver, in 1962.

Hope this helps - your information has helped me!

If you want to contact me, I'm at janicekearney@yahoo.com, or 610-203-8154.

Re: Children/Descendants of Colonel William Legge and Elizabeth Washington

Col William Legge and Elizabeth Washington appear to have had at least one child,Admiral George Legge 1648=1691 who became 1st Baron Dartmouth and he married Barbara Archibald, dau of Sir Henry Archibald. According to my records he was arrested for Treason and died in the Tower of London before he was tried. I believe William and Elizabeth had other children, but I have no names. George and Barbara had at least 5 and possibly 6 children, all girls except William,1672-1750 who married Anne Heneage of Aylesford and they also had a bunch of children. I have some further details if you want them. Of course, I cannot guarantee all of this as others have done it.

The Legge Tree I have was made prior to the invention of computersby my deceased sister, and there are some errors. You may have filled in one gap. I have no Richard unless he was a brother of Rev, William, vicar of Stroud, b 1736-1793. I have Francis,1760-1834 as the son of Rev, William, and there is a line for William's siblings with no names. If Richard was brother of William, I could add him in. Alan

It is just possible that there are two James Legges born at about the same time. The reference I have to him as the son of Robert Legge of Windsor, and grandson of Rev. Thomas, 1736-93 is from a family tree my deceased sister constructed prior to the invention of computers. There is a pencil note that James was a Chinese Scholar, but I don't know where that came from The reason for my confusion is the reference to him being Scottish born in the link you sent me. The indication on my tree would have him born in England possibly in London or Windsor. Either way, I am afraid we have no written records that would help you. Sorry.Alan

You have the right James Legge - check Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Legge. There is also a fair amount written about him in books by Carl T Smith, starting with "Chinese Christians; Elites, Middlemen and the Church in Hong Kong". He was a very prominent educator in colonial Hong Kong, and a fine man by all accounts.
My major interest in him is because he was a friedn of my g-g-grandfather, a Royal Engineer who worked in the colonial administration in Canton and Hong Kong, and was married to a Chinese woman. I am on a desparate search for letters and papers that might make any references to them! If you know where your family letters are, it would be a huge help! I will also go to London at some point to research the papers of the Londond Missionary Society.
Thank you for your reply!

I just have a note that he was a Chinese Scholar. He had brothers Rev William of Fakenham, sister Mary, and brother Henry.I did not know that he was a Missionary with the CIM, but would like to know more about him.
I have tried every which way to go further back than Thomas Legge without success. He was at one time Sherriff of London, and in 1347 and again in 1354 he was Lord mayor of London. He may have been the first one to hold that particular title. I cannot find any Legges prior to that. I have also started searching the Normandy genealogy. So far no luck. I have everything after that.Who were your Father and Grandfather? Any relation to Dr William Legge, born 1826?

LEGGE, Twillingate District Newfoundland

Looking for

Frederick Legge b: 1861, Twillingate (likely Farmers Arm)
Married to Elizabeth ?
with children,
1. Arthur b: Mar 1888
2. Roland b: Feb 1896 m: Jessie
3. Mary b: Sep 1900 m: John Farr
4. Edgar b: 30 Sep 1903 m: Violet Pearl Rideout
5. Paul b: Aug 1904
6. Lucy b: Sep 1906 m: Herbert Burt
7. Melinda Blanche b: 27 Oct 1918 m: William Hillier

I was told this information by my Great grandmother #7, Melinda Blanche Legge. Now this being said she had Alzeheimers. I HAVE found the 1921 Farmers Arm Census, and it does show Frederick & Elizabeth with many of these children, however NO Melinda or Blanche who would have been about 3-4 by then.

My grandmother, Melinda's daughter is adamant that she wasn't adopted, however I am skeptical if she really knows or not.

Now I also know there was another Frederick Legge in the same area at the same time, known to many as Frederick JR. He was married 2 times, Eliza Stockley and Emma Ann Crossley, he was the s/o of James Legge and Barbara. So this is NOT my Frederick. They were called Jr & Sr to distinguish between the two of them.

I have also found a marriage record for

Dec 8 1893, Twillingate.
Frederick Legge, 30, bach, fisherman, of Twillingate, Meth
to
Elizabeth Curtis, 23, spin, Meth, of Fridays Bay
witnesses: Matthew Bulgin and Rosanna Bulgin

This information jives with the information I was given. Im hoping I can find more information or trace other Legge lines to see where this one fits in!!

Melissa
gen_bug@hotmail.com

I just read tonight that he is buried in Petersburg, TN. That's all I know about him, besides he was in a horror movie in the 90s, I think.
