Rev. James T Legrand

I'm stumped!! I can't find the parents of Rev. James T Legrand from St Francois County in Missouri. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Meadows (Legrand) around 1882. They had 6 children: Jesse A, John H, Charles E, Florence E, James H and Nancy E. Rev. James T Legrand was my GG Grandfather. He died in Manatee County, Florida in 1929. 1900 Census indicates his father's and mother's birthplace was Indiana. If you have any information, please email me at khall@benepayonline.com.

Hi Linda

I'm stumped on some of this too, but this is my opinion on the questions you asked:

After doing some research on the name LeGrand, I found that the surname has French, Scottish, or other UK origins, so I believe it was a name that Benjamin, Clarence's and Flora's father, may have brought over with him from England when he immigrated. On the other hand, it may not have anything to do with past ancestors, but it could show seniority to the fact that Clarence was Benjamin's and Josephine's first born. I found this definition of the surname on Ancestry's website: "French and English: nickname from Old French grand, grant ‘tall’, ‘large’ (occasionally used to denote seniority rather than size), with the French definite article le. It was taken to the U.S. also as Huguenot name." These are my beliefs on the origin of the name LeGrand.

In regards to the Native American heritage, I have heard this also, and believe that it may have originated with Josephine when she lived in Crawford County, but I am not sure. Other than that, I do not have anymore information on Josephine, but I am still searching.

Thank you,
Debbie

I agree that Adelaide B. Green was Clarence's wife. I am a decendant of Clarence's sister Flora. I have a few questions I hope that you may help with.

Do you have any information about the "LeGrand" in Clarence's name? Did it come from some distant family name?

Do you know about any Native American heritage? I was told by more that one source that there was some distant Native American heritage, but have been unable to locate anything.

Josephine Charity Minnium was Clarence and Flora's mother. Do you have any further information from her early life in Crawford county PA?

Anything you may have would be helpful.

Thank you,

Linda

Hi Rory.

I came across your post as I was doing some reasearch and saw that you mentioned Clarence LeGrand Cox was married to a woman named Agnes Vanek. Clarence was my great great grandfather, and I just wanted to clarify that he was not married to Agnes Vanek. He was married to Adelaide B. Green, and they were married on Sept. 13, 1887. Upon further research, I found that there was a Clarence Dunford who married an Agnes Vanek, but this was not Clarence Cox. I just wanted to make this clarification.

I am very interested in the information you have of the LeGrand/Cox descendancy. Lucy Alexander LeGrand Cox married James Marion Fulton in Buckingham County, Virginia but I can find no information about the groom. Do you have any of that in your research?
I am sure that Josephine's maiden name is Minnium. I located a copy of the marriage record at the Cuyahoga county archives. I am just not able to verify Josephine's parents with documents. She died in 1930, and a death certificate was completed, but one of her son-in-laws was the source, and he did not correctly document her parents. Do you know of any baptismal or other documents that could assist?

Thank you,

Linda
Then we are distant cousins! Did Julia Foot have a sister called Aura? Only I found an Aura Le Grand Foot listed in the 1911 Census in London and thought it must be her sister. Have you looked at www.myjacobfamily.com - there are details of the Le Grands there from Canterbury days and Ireland.
Best wishes, Claire

There was a baby born between Ollie and Ottis in 1899. I remember vividly grandma talking about him. She called him Little Joe. He died at age 3. She said he was a sickly baby and she took his death very hard, she was 5 or 6 at the time. She also talked about Teddy and how she had to carry him everywhere. She was a young teenager and her mom was not around. If I remember correctly she was working because Mary Margaret was having issues with AJ. Teddy would call Ollie "mom"

Anthony --Thanks for the response. A.J. LeGrand was a Civil War captain on the Union side (Charcoal Division). He died in Washington County, MO on Feb 22, 1880. His wife Margaret Hanks died on Aug 16, 1886. Margaret and Abraham Lincoln were first cousins. Joseph Abraham was the sixth of their seven children. My father told me that the Hanks family was with Lincoln when he moved from Kentucky to Illinois. I have no info on John Harris, but Margaret Hanks' parents were Dennis Friend Hanks and Sarah Elizabeth Johnston.

I have four genealogical charts prepared by my nephew several years ago. I would be glad to provide you with them. Ed

One minor correction. The correct spelling of my father's name is Ottis, not Otis. He was born in Flat River, Mo on October 17, 1903 and died in Prineville, OR on May 2,1983.
Regarding Joseph and Mary's children (how about that: Joseph and Mary!), the correct order is Frederick, Kate, Ollie, Mabel, Ottis, Henry, William, and Teddy. William and Columbus are the same person. Hope this helps, Ed LeGrand
