I am descended from a son of Anna Elisabeth Leib who married to Johann Ernst Rossteuscher, a butcher, in 1787 at Streufdorf/Hildburghausen, Thuringia, Germany, which at the time was a Sachsen Dutchy, and also part of Hessen at one time.

I had the Rossteuscher line researched by the Evangelical archivist at Eisenacht, Thüringen but did not ask that the Leib line be researched in 2010. The Rossteuscher line is recorded there back to a man born 1692, from Westhausen. Prior to that, they are are likely in another archive, either Roman Catholic, or lived in another location.

The Eisenach Archive reported only the marriage and that Anna Elisabeth Leib is a daughter of Johann Tobias Leib (butcher & host, born Streufdorf) and his wife Anna Elisabeth Graf, born21 Dec 1768, died 05 Jan1804.

Online, I have found other Leib's and their relatives in the area. I hope to find out that they are related to Johann Tobias Leib:

Gesellschaft fr Familienkunde in Kurhessen und Waldeck e.V. gegr=C3=BCndet 1924 - Sitz Kassel >>> JHV am 28.04.2012 <<<

1634 LEIB, Johann, * 28.4.1591 Streufdorf / Hildburghausen,
15.3.1666 Coburg, imm. 1612 Jena, 1615 Altdorf, 1616 Ingolstadt, Poeta
laureatus in Altdorf, Verfasser, =E2=88=9E 14.10.1623 Coburg
[Vater=3D3268] [Tochter=3D817]

3268 LEIB, Johann Nicolaus, s=C3=A4chs.
My Leib ancestor is Abraham, son of Ulrich, who was disinherited. Ulrich wrote a codicil to his will saying that Abraham had "behaved inobediently unto me." Abraham continued to live in Manheim Twp on land next to his brother John and his father.

I find nothing to suggest Abraham did not continue to follow some form of Anabaptist faith. None of his children, and few of his grandchildren, show up in the Lancaster baptism records. My own line from Abraham, which was through a daughter, seems to have remained Mennonite for at least two more generations.

Burgert's book includes the following children:
Johann Jonas bp 30 Nov 1725, Reihen Reformed Kirche.
Susanna Catharina b. 5 Mar 1739, Trinity Lutheran, Lancaster.
Maria Barbara b. 15 Jul 1743, Christ Lutheran, York.

From Orphans Court records in York dtd 30 Aug 1763: John Leib of Manchester Twp d. intestate. Children were: Jonas Leib, Esther m. Leonard Hartzell, Margaret m. Tetter (Dietrich) Mayer, Elisabeth m. Philip Ziegler, Catharina m. Sebastian Wigle, Gotfrid, Barbara m. Jacob Ament.

Johann Gottfried Leib, son of late Johann Leib, m. Barbara Rudisill, dau of Jacob Rudisill on 22 Dec 1761, Christ Lutheran in York.

Keith Dull's book "Early German Settlers of York County" covers a bit more about Johannes' family. I believe you can access a portion of the book via google books.

Regarding subsequent messages, I would be hesitant to base my research on religion. Much can happen to a family from one generation to the next. Many men and women, as they do today, adopted the religious denomination of their spouses. Also, a move to another county or state could precipitate a change in denomination. (That even happened to me when I moved from Oklahoma to New Jersey. There are no Disciple of Christ churches here so I became a Methodist)

I descend from many Anabaptist families, but it took me almost 20 years of research to get back far enough to find them. Good luck.

Probably a more centered approach. I do believe Ulrich disinherited one of his sons in LWAT (probably for a mennonite lifestyle infraction or something), so if you discount that son you could likely discount the line.
As I said, I discounted Johannes, so I do not have any children information, but I believe he had a son on the same boat coming over, if my memory serves me well. Might check that. The Lutheran connection sounds promising.
regards,
Jack Leib

Will research that possibility after the holidays. I too, want proof. I never researched Johannes children, etc. Who knows, maybe my Adam Leib is related to him and not Ulhrich!

No problem. Not really an error, exclusion is many times more valuable than inclusions in centering research.

Since most of my known line were Mennonites, I discounted Johannes....kept me from running down blind alleys.

Good Luck !!

Thanks for pointing our my error. After writing that message I relooked at my research on Johannes.

Annette Burgert, in her book "Eighteenth Century Emigrants: The Northern Kraichgau" covers the Johannes Leib who arrived on the William & Sarah in 1727. He was baptized in 1689 in the Reinhen Reformed Church (Sinsheim); he was also married there in 1724, with one child baptized in 1725. There are additional baptisms for his children in both the Lutheran and Reformed churches in Lancaster and York.

The parents of Johannes had other children baptized in Reihen, but there is no Ulrich listed.
Hi, I too have researched this line on and off since 1976, with no luck connecting to Ulrich (with proof).

Regarding your comment on potential brothers, I believe I remember some previous information that Johannes was Lutheran and Ulrich was Mennonite and a previous researcher had doubted that they were brothers.

I've looked for obituaries. Nada.....
My Adam was a laborer so I doubt he had any property. If I could only find his father......As to the different spelling, it's made it difficult to find records, but I did find some with the different spellings Libe, Leab....

I will resume my research after the holidays when the weather here (New Jersey) is cold and gloomy. I will most definitely check probate records. I plan on getting copies of records for family member who lived in Reading, Adams Co, PA. Maybe they will offer clues. Anyway, I want those records for my "book" as they are direct descendants and my immediate family.

You see, I was adopted when I was 6 months old, and the Leib family is my biological family. I found my biological siblings, mother/father etc. back in 1978. Started tracing my roots around 2006.

Keeps me out of trouble (hee hee).

Thanks for your input. Hope you have a great Holiday Season.

Unfortuntately I am unable to help you. My records for Ulrich's line only go back 2 or 3 generations, and they are far from complete.

Remember that Ulrich and Johannes Leib were not the only Leib immigrants. The Strassburger and Hinke book includes 3 Leibs, 2 Liebs, and 2 Leebs. There are also many other spellings (Lipe, Leep, Leibpe, Libi, Liebe, etc) that probably evolved into the Leib spelling.

(Note: I'm aware of the Hans Leib who was listed with Ulrich in a 1723 Mennonite census, and I agree he is likely the Johannes Leib who immigrated in the same year as Ulrich. However, I'm unaware of any evidence that shows they were brothers. I have not found any instances of them interacting with one another following their immigrations. They were perhaps related, but I personally cannot prove they were brothers.)

Anyway, all you can do is continue to thoroughly research each generation until you find the clue/s you need. I checked the census and could not positively trace Adam back before 1870, Cumberland Co. He doesn't have any real property in the 1870 census, but perhaps he left some deeds that would tell you something about his family. Have you checked to see if Adam and/or Caroline had an obituary? And, if you haven't done so, you might want to look at the probate records for the other Leibs in Cumberland Co to see if Adam is mentioned. Good luck.

I cannot find Adam's parents, thus I cannot connect my line with Ulrich Leib's line or his brother. In his later years George B. went back to Dauphin County.
Mary Leib, daughter of Ulrich Leib

There seems to be a general consensus on the internet that Mary Leib, daughter of Ulrich Leib, married Abraham Stoner. Is there any proof of this? I am aware that Ulrich administered Stoner's estate, yet the article "Essay on the Stoner/Steiner Families of PA" (PA Mennonite Heritage, Jan 1988) simply says Stoner's second wife "by tradition was Mary Laub/Leip."

Ulrich Leib wrote his will in May 1767, naming his son-in-law, Christian Long, one of his executors. Ulrich wrote a codicil in Sep 1767 saying that Christian Long had died. The Administration Bond for Christian was issued on 24 Sep 1767 to Mary Long, Joseph Long and Christian Swarr. Mary Long and the others signed off on the inventory and appraisal of his estate. These records certainly suggest, but do not prove, that Christian Long had married Mary Leib, daughter of Ulrich Leib.

In March 1773, Joseph Long and Christian Swahr were appointed guardians of the persons and estates of the minor children (Christian, Anna, and Maria) of Christian Long of Warwick Twp. John Leib of Manheim Twp, who would have been the brother of Mary Leib, was appointed guardian of the person and estate of child Barbara Long. These records suggest that Mary, widow of Christian, had died.

The year of birth for the Mary Leib who married Abraham Stoner is routinely given on the internet as 1680 or 1708. Ulrich's son Abraham was born in 1736. It seems unlikely that Abraham Leib had a sister born in 1680 or 1708.
Unknown Leib letter

I have a letter from Singen - Hohentweil, Baden, Germany in 1928. It was written to my great-great grandmother Anna Barbara Ruppenstein Nagele (in Cincinnati, Oh) from her cousin. I think the cousins name is Clark or Clare Laile. Clark/Clare wrote the letter on behalf of his/her grandmother Mrs. Leib. I have been unable to figure out who they are because I do not know anything about Anna's family, but obviously this is her family. I do believe Anna was from Frauendorf. If any of this could be a possible connection feel free to email me directly at nagelecl@mail.uc.edu.

Another tidbit of info: I know for a fact Anna had a niece named Marie Lunz and she later married George Schultheis. Marie immigrated to Cincinnati as well.

I believe your John Leib is the son of Abraham Leib (1736-1814) and Anna Maria Kiesel. Your John and Elizabeth are buried in the Leib Burial Ground in Manheim Twp, as are Abraham Leib and Maria Leib, and two other sons of Abraham and Maria. The cemetery appears to be on land owned by Abraham and bequeathed to his son Christian (one of the other sons in the cemetery).

John inherited 123 acres in Leacock Twp from his father. I have not followed what happened to the land. Tracing John's land, and tying it to the 123 acres given to him in Abraham's will, should give you the proof you need.

>>>>Hi
Interesting in that my Gf was one of the Civil War Leibs from NY. Got paid to
take someones place and when discharged, bought many acres in then rural
Brooklyn.
Ken (grandson) Leib <<<<<<<<

The Leibs in my connection: 2 fought in Iowa regiments and 1 was a Captain in a Minnesota Regiment. The 2 Wells brothers, that married Leib sisters, fought with the Ohio 102nd regiment and their younger brother with the Ohio 120th. None really fared well. (disabilities). My gg-grandfather Miles Wells was killed on the Sultana ship disaster (he was married to Sarah Leib), and his younger brother Cyreneus was KIA while with the Ohio 120th. This WELLS family migrated to Wooster area of Ohio after being in Cortland County New York about 1815-1840. Brior to 1800 they were from the Albany New York.

The Leib marriages occured about 1850-1854 in Wayne County, Ohio. Elizabeth Leib married to Miles' twin brother, Giles, died before 1860.

Sarah Leib was first married in Ohio to a Theophilus Brenizer, who died at age 25, before she married Miles Wells. Mentioning this in case that surname comes up in anyone's records.

Jeanette
Hi, Leib Researchers!

I've been following the latest exchange of emails on Leibs in Pennsylvania. This is the first time I've entered a discussion on Leibs in Pennsylvania.

I am a primary WELLS surname researcher. Two Wells brothers each married a Leib sister in the early 1850's in Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio.

Sarah and Elizabeth Leib's father was Benjamin Leib, born 30 Nov 1806, and married to Anna Smith (although listed sometimes as Nancy Schmidt). I recently found her headstone and she is listed as Anna Smith. Benjamin is listed, in his children's death certificates, as either born in Pennsylvania or Bavaria. I have a copy of an obituary which provides limited information but have provided it below.

These 2 Wells brothers and 3 Leib brothers fought in the Civil War and it is by their pension records I am able to get what I have on this Leib family.

The oldest known child was is Daniel Webster Leib born 24 May 1829 in Mt. Joy, Lancaster County. Although some of the family were listed as LEIBY, at least one brother has his civil war pension records manually changed to read LEIB. I've seen the name more often as Leib than any other alternate spelling.

This family migrated to Wayne County Ohio prior to 1850. I hope this information may help someone or better yet, help me. If anyone has information or would like additional information, please contact me.

Thank you all!

Jeanette Wells Schmalzbauer
St. Paul, Minnesota
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evangelical Messenger, 21 Nov 1872
d. 4 Sep 1872 in Monroe, Jasper County, Iowa. "Benjamin Leib, aged 65 years, 9 months and 4 days. Bro. Leib was converted to God a number of years ago under the preaching of Rev. J. P. Leib, at present a minister in the East Pa. Conference. He endeavored to lead a consistent and exemplary life, and a few moments before the spirit took its flight from the tenement of clay, he expressed an ardent desire to go home and see his Saviour who had sustained him through life. He leaves many friends who mourn his departure. Funeral services by the writer. C. H. EGGE." (Evangelical Messenger, 21 Nov 1872) An obituary in "the Evangelical Messenger, a large and influential religious German newspaper published at Cleveland, Ohio," refers to him "as a man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him, particularly by the church (the German Evangelical) with which for many years he was actively connected, on account of his unswerving integrity, generous impulses and constant endeavors to lead a pious and exemplary life."

Research Notes: Is Rev. J. P. Leib related? New York Times Published Sept 19, 1875 Rev. J. P. Leib, one of the pioneer ministers of the Evangelical Association (Albright Methodists) died September 6 in Pennsylvania, aged seventy two.

You are correct that two cousins Ulrich and Johannes LEIB arrived in Philadelphia on different ships in 1727 (The William and Sarah--Johannes-- and the Molly--Ulrich). Ulrich settled in Lancaster County and Johannes in York County.

I descend from BOTH LEIB families!

Both Johannes and Ulrich appear on the Friesenheim (Germany)Mennonite Census List in 1724.
Re: Any Philadelphia Leibs out there?

I've managed to trace my ancestry back to Ulrich Leib in Lancaster/York Co., PA. At age 6 months I was adopted. I had 4 sisters - father Roderick Henry Leib. One of my sisters (who was also adopted out) was Carole Ann who was raised in Phila and died when she was 50 leaving 2 daughters who married and had children. I grew up in Philadelphia.

From all the reseach I've done, there were 2 main Leib families in York PA. My lineage is from Ulrich who arrived from Germany and started the one line. One of his decendants was Jesse Leib who was my gr gr grandfather. Jesse Leib's son George was my grandfather's father (Theodore R. Leib).

I'm ready to go forward and find family of the sons of George B. Leib and their offspring.

Are you related or decended from a Leib?

I've traced my family back to early 1820's (Jesse & Caroline Leib). My great grandparents were George and Jenny Leib, whose one son Theodore R. was my grandfather. Theodore had 2 children, Roderick Henry Leib & Dorothy. Roderick was my father. I have 4 sisters and 5 half-siblings from his line. Half-siblings live in TN.

Does anyone have info on Jesse & Caroline's parents? Is anyone out there related to me??

Does anyone have a copy of this man's will? I'm interested in what his will says about his daughter Anna, supposedly the wife of Philip Lanor. Does the will say whether Anna was a widow by the time he wrote his will in 1810? Does it mention where Anna and Philip Lanor lived? Or, are there any deeds or Orphans Court records that answer the above questions? Thank you for any help. Right now I'm just exploring a hunch.

Candy, our dad was married to Margaret in Reading. He had 5 daughters: Gladys, Lois, Sandra, Linda and Carole Ann. Lois, Linda and Carole Ann were adopted out. Carole Ann is now deceased. We have some significant mental health issues in our family e.g. bipolar disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder. He also had 2 daughters by his "girlfriends".

Hope to hear from you.

Hey. Great hearing from you. I have had a hard time finding information on the Leib side. Like you, I did find Theodore in in 1910 Census but not much else. I do have a copy of his and Viola's marriage application.
You can email me at snowflake8227@yahoo.com so we can get more in depth (I have lost your phone #).
Renee
