My grandmother was a Lester... It is said that she is a decendent of the Earl of Leicester, consort to the Queen. I am trying to trace this.. I am at a loss. Can you tell me
when the name leicester became lester ? I believe my great grandfathers name was Thomas Lester... Is there someone out there that could help me find out some answers?
Did you ever find anything on this? My chart goes back to George Charles Frederick Leicester. I couldn't find the reference to George Frederick Leicester.

According to family legend. George's father was Charles, the 2nd Duke of Dorset of Knole House. He supposedly married the Countess of Shrewsbury, Elizabeth Talbot in 1769 in Paris. He died before the child was born and the marriage was not acknowledged. According to Shrewsbury records, she was married at the time to the Earl of Shrewsbury and never had a child.

Elizabeth's favorite room in Knole House was the Leicester room and that is why the "bastard" child was given that name.

There is an alternate family legend.

I purchased a antique dressing table for my little girl this Christmas from a dealer in Malbis Alabama. He told me that it came from Scotland. My little girl was going through the draws and found some pictures that were back in the 40's and some of the had the name Leicester wrote on the back of them.. I would love to get these back to someone in this family. Please contact me at swarren@empire-concrete.com.

Re: LEICESTER Family, Lancashire, England

You're not going to believe this. This is my first real day on Leicester and I found a connection. To be sure.
I have Ada m Leicester, daughter of James. She is my fist born son's great grandmother. I knew her for some years before she died here in Dallas Texas. More details to come. I am looking for the family of James. You have given me more that I expected. I didn't know about the siblings. You're right about them leaving. James was granted citizenship 16 Oct 1889 in Goshen, Elkhart Co. Indiana, USA. I have found Ada, married to Theodore D. Haring 10 Sep 1902 in Elkhart, In. Daughter Dorothea V(esta) and Charles Joseph Haring.
I can go on from there but I really want to go backward. Any thing you have is appreciated.
Coincidentally, I am also researching the family Entwistle, from over Bury/Bolton way. It can become a very small world.
I hope to hear fro you soon.
Judith Million-Conway Entwistle

Looking for information on Mary Lester born circa 1828 to Anthony and Catherine Lester of Aghnagore, Killashee, County Longford. She would have left Ireland before the age of 21 and gone to North Meols, Churchtown, Southport, Lancashire County, England. She may have left Ireland with William Moffett or she met him there.

Am looking for a family that seemed to disappear out of England between the 1881 and 1891 censuses and no signs of them in the marriage indexes for any of the children at the appropriate times.
In 1881 James and Harriet (Hibbert) Leicester were living in Salford, Lancs., near Manchester. Both of them were born in the section fo Manchester known as Hulme, James the son of William Leicester and Harriet the daughter of William Hibbert. They were married at Manchester Cathedral 24 Dec 1865. They had 4 children by 1881- Ada, John, James, William (not in the correct order).
James Sr. was b. ca 1840 and Harriet ca 1845/6.
Would like to hear from anyone who might be connected to this family.
Diana.

Hi Carol

I have been researching my Leicester family for over a year. About 6 months ago I found a man who is a Leicester and from the same group I am researching. He is in his 70's and he told me that his grandfather was always very particular about the pronounciation of the name. Even though this man spells it Leicester he pronounces it Lester. But others that I have found pronounce it Leicester.

In the area of NC that I am researching I have seen the name spelt Lister in 1769 then Lester in the later 1700's and then to Leicester and Leister in the 1800's but I haven't been able to tie the two names together yet. I strongly suspect that these men are of my Leicester family but with no evidence yet.
