I have also come to a dead end at my 5 x great grandfather Joseph DISSINGTON in the mid-1700s in Staffordshire.
I just made a connection to Matthew Leigh of Blackrath Kildare, son of William Leigh and Margaret (Kelly) Leigh. William was the son of James Leigh and Eliza Byrne. William's brother, also a James emigrated to Grand Rapids Michigan and raised his family there that I have now connected to on Facebook. James Jr.'s uncle Matthew Leigh, brother James Sr. had emigrated to Michigan earlier and was staying with his Aunt Margerat (Leigh) Eardly in Kent County, Michigan. James jr.'s grand-daughters put me in touch with Matthew Leigh's son Declan who still lives on the ol family farm (dairy) in Blackrath, his father lives next door. His father is married to Lily.

the line for me stops at my 7x great grandfather Joseph dissington who was born in 1750 in Staffordshire, after that i and those also researching the dissington line becomes stuck. but my line is direct through the paternal line to staffordshire all but 2 where born there.

i have gotten further back but i cant confirm if the information is correct as the surname is dishington, which is a well known variation of dissington, and i cant get hold of the birth certificate to confirm as the first names also differ as dissingtons normally went by their middle names, if this person is correct it leads to scotland.

which would tie in other historical records and how the area of dissington came to be, but it could also lead to isreal, depending on which person it is. theres is also a link to sweden, so it becomes cloudy for the time before 1725.

i mainly got the information through birth certificates and ancestry.co.uk, but also through some relatives who are on my minds eye.

they hold detailed info on all back to 1725 and they have then become stuck.

the only thing i do know is that the next person back was born around 1725, and is one of the above but they were all born around this time.

i think you have also contact myself in the past through genes reunited and i can now give you the information as i would not allow tree sharing on there for myself.
if you want the dates and names of my side message me and ill send them on

Palmer was the only surviving child of Elmer and Martha. His children include my mother, her 2 sisters and 1 brother. Martha was said to be 1/2 Blackfoot, but we have not yet been able to trace that line. She was born in Canada, which would add up. Perhaps her mother was full Blackfoot. I think it's safe to assume her father was not. Elmer had 1 brother, also named Palmer. We think he lived with his Aunt and Uncle after his parents died. This is why there is some conflicting census reports with different "parents" I'll have to check that with my sister. I haven't looked at my notes for some time

There is a James Leigh married to Alice Birtle in 1796 in Winwick who might be them, but I have no proof. Does anyone know any more about them?

My name is Pat Geiger.

I'm sure I know who you are reseraching for. She and I and a couple of other cousins communicate directly also. Sycha was my great great grandmother. I live in PA now, close to West Virginia.

I have printed out this entire message board now that I have found it again and have found my message posted May 6, 2001. I was told to reserach Grafton, Taylor Co., West Virginia. (see the note on the message board by Debbie Lee, Oct. 3, 2000)

It was also suggested that I research the other counties that were carved out of Frederick Co., and then Hampshire Co. for information. There is a Hampshire Co. History, 1784-2004, published in 2004, that says parts of other counties carved out of Hampshire Co. are Hardy Co., Morgan Co., Berkeley Co., Mineral Co., and Grant Co. It has seemed such a daunting task, but I'm now ready to pursue the answers with my other cousins, no matter how many letters and phone calls I have to make.

We who are researching know that Sycha was married twice after Mr. Lee. Second marriage to Lemuel Chapman, Granville, Licking Co., Ohio on Aug 21, 1822. Third marriage to Henry P.
I'm doing Lee family research for a 90 year old lady who is connected to this line. We are looking for PROOF of who James Henry Lee's (1818-1893) parents were. She believes his father was Charles Henry Lee (1771-c1824) and his wife Sycha/Sicha/Sychy Tracy. We have no maiden name for her. We think she married a Mr. Tracy after her Lee husband died. She is buried in same cemetery in Iowa as son James Henry. Does anyone have any information they'd be willing to share regarding Sychy (of whatever spelling!) and her 2 husbands, Mr. Lee (which one?) and Mr. Tracy?

Thanks in advance from Montana!

Rita

Hi, I have only recently begun looking for Leigh in Wigan/Warrington area. My earliest lead is Joseph Leigh, born about 1860. Don't know who he married but he had a daughter, Sarah Ellen Leigh, born 1889.

the name can often be spelled different ways because it all depended on what the census enumerator thought it should be. Joseph Leigh could not read/write, so he couldn't correct it.

Any info about Leighs would be welcome.

Best wishes

Family story that we were related to Gypsy Rose Leigh.
I've traced back to Louisa Leigh (1800-1868 Greenwich, London) who married Thomas Peters. Her parents were Edward Leigh (1775) and Elizabeth Leigh (1780).
I wonder if the story came from Louisa having the same name as the Burlesque American dancer who had that stage name, or if anyone knows if there was a Gypsy link to the Leigh family?

James Leigh was born in Grangemore, Parish of Kilcullen, County Kildare, Ireland and married Cathering Murphy. Family came to the United States in 1833-34. They remain in Cutler, Washington County, Maine until after 1850 (federal census 1850 shows them on page 210, dwelling 52, family 61. James is 54 and a widower. The family migrated west. Some of the children stayed in Chicago, Milwaukee, Berlin, and Oconto Wisconsin. John Leigh was born 20 December 1827. John married Esther Durgan prior to 1851 when their first child and son Joseph was born on 1 May 1851 on a steamer ship on Lake Michigan. John and Esther had nine children, Joseph, Katherine, Mary Ann, Margaret, John W. Jr., Nellie, Hattie, Lincoln and Edward. Joseph married Apphia Couillard on 28 January 1872 in Marinette, Marinette County, WI. Effie or Effa holds the distinction of being the first "white" child born on the Oconto River. Joseph and Effie also had nine children, Kitty, Effie, Susan, Arthur, Harriet, Edith, Ruby, Chester and Ida.
James was born in Ireland in 1805 and John was born in Ireland in 1828, they came to America in 1838 and lived in Maine until about 1850 when they came to Wisconsin. Enroute to Oconto County Joseph was born, they lived in Leighton, on what is now Highway 22 between Oconto and Stiles. John served in the Wisconsin state assembly around 1875 representing Oconto County. Joseph married Apphia Coulliard and they had several children, one of them my great-grandmother, Effie Leigh. Effie died in 1964. There is a book available for the Joseph Leigh family that was assembled by one of my grandfather's cousins several years ago.

I found them both at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City, but there may be copies available other places. I thought I was hot on the track of a George W. Leigh who's a GGG grandfather. It turned out the one mentioned in these books was the wrong one. My George W. Leigh was from Virginia and is mentioned in the website link I also included. I see a strong family resemblance in a photo I have seen between my GGF John Leigh and one of the Oconto Leigh's from Kildare.

I have plotted the Oconto Leigh family on my tree and some of their decendants and relatives including Dr. Allan and his family. Dr. Allan eventually retired to Tacoma, Washington. I found an article online about Dr. Allan.

I just established a bloodline relationship to Esther Durgin Leigh, wife of John Leigh, son of James. Esther's GGF David Durgin is the brother of William Durgin who is the GGGF of my Aunt's husband Terry L. Durgin of Maine. MY Leigh's also came from Kildare but emigrated to Engand and then New York. I have plotted the JAmes Leigh family of Oconto and the Durgin family of Maine on my tree.
