Looking for additional data on George B. LEIGH, son of JT and Mary Leigh. He was born 1855 in Indiana and lived in Illinois and Missouri. In 1875 he married a Sarah MILLSAP and had at least two children, Amos and Clyde. George and Sarah may have divorced, date unknown. Need date and place of death for George.

A few months ago, I purchased several items at an estate sale. Closer inspection of one of the items revealed what I believe to be is a manuscript. It is in 3 volumes and is typed. It is titled " History of the United Daughters of the Confederacy" It is copyrighted in 1927 and was authored by Mrs. Townes Randolph Leigh, Gainsville, Florida. I have done a little research but am unable to locate any info on the author. The manuscript was evidentally given to a friend as there is a hand written note on the front page and it is autographed by the author. Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Please drop me a line. Thank you in advance.

The 1911 census confirms my 'welsh' grandfather was actually born in Stockport Cheshire in 1876. There is a William born at that time in Heaton Norris but when I work forward to 1901 census it looks like he was still in that area and married. I need to find out if this supposition is correct or whether that William moved to South Wales (Neath)between 1891 and 1901.

Since starting this quest in June 2007, I have opened up various family connection both dead and living. I have found that I have living relations in Florida, England, and Australia, although none are named Leigh. Finding descendents born after this generation is proving harder to find, including the Ireland connections.

My grandfather's birth certificate tells me my great- grandfather John Leigh 1858-1921 was a farmer and brick burner and lived in South Dublin in 1901 at Grovefield Cottage on Crumlin Road. Spouse: Mary Anne Nugent 1855–1912. Children: Esther Mary Leigh born, Ballybawn, County Wicklow, Ireland, 1878–1952 married William George O'Melia, emigrated to USA. Mary Leigh born Ballybawn, County Wicklow, Ireland 1880–1961 aka Aunt Dolly married Harry Johnson emigrated to USA. Denis Leigh born Ireland, 1886 – married Margaret Flanagan, lived in Preston, Lanc. Had 4 sons and a daughter. Catherine Leigh, born Ballybawn, County Wicklow, Ireland 1887–1970 aka Sister Anne, Aunt Katty, served in Presentation Convent, Preston, worked in India for 50 years. Sarah "Sally" Leigh born Ireland, 1887 – married Frederick Clitheroe of Preston, Lancashire in 1907, had 2 daughters and a son. 1 daughter buried with grandmother Mary Ann in Fernyhalgh Cemetery. Margaret Mary Leigh born Ireland, 1890–1916 aka Sister Gerrard, died age 26, Preston, Lanc. served in Presentation Convent, Preston. Elizabeth Leigh, born Ireland, 1892–1916 died age 24. Leigh family researchers, please take a look at your files and see if a Andrew Jackson Leigh (b. 7 SEPT 1818 in NC, d. 16 OCT 1877 in Yell County, ARK) fits into your information or if you can give me a lead based on some of the information I have.

The first I can find of Andrew Jackson Leigh is confirmation of his marriage 15 DEC 1849 to Louisa Jane Porter (6 Nov 1830 - 5 Dec 1876) in Winston County, MS. He is known as “Jackson” on all other information I can find about him, including census and voting records. There is also evidence of a “Jackson Leigh” of the appropriate age as a ship passenger traveling from Galveston to New Orleans in 1842, although I cannot confirm that this is the same person. He is listed as “LEE” on the 1850 Winston County census, with the occupation of “degerritide” so he may have worked as a daguerreian. In the 1860 census, same county, he is listed as a merchant. I think he and his family joined his wife’s Porter/Walker cousins in east Texas either during or at the very end of the Civil War. Their second son Andrew Fletcher was born in Texas in 1867. They moved to Yell County, Arkansas soon after and another son was born in 1869. Their children were:

Jane Ellen Leigh (Ella), b. 1850 (Mississippi)
Walter, b. 1852 (Mississippi)
Joseph C., b.1854 (Mississippi)
Rose, b. 1858 (Mississippi)
James (?), b. 1860 (Mississippi)

The oldest daughter, Ella, married John Mathias Harkey, and extensive research has been done on the Harkey family, in both Texas and Arkansas. Ola Arkansas was named after their first daughter. The birth and death dates for both Louisa and Jackson are from the large gravestone in Sandlin Cemetery, Yell County, Arkansas.

Any help will be most appreciated. I know more about the Harkeys, Morrisons, Porters, and Walkers than I do about this Leigh family history. He is my great, great grandfather and most family records from my Leigh branch were destroyed in a fire in the 1930s.

Mary Leigh/Harry Horton/Alfred S Horton/Effie Patterson - Hunterdon NJ

I am searching for the parents and siblings of a Mary Leigh born 1883 died 1921 abt 38 yrs old.
I am also looking for her husband's family - She married Harry Horton, may have been Harold (died in 1952), and they had two childred: Alfred Smith Horton (my grandfather), and Effie Horton.
Resided in pattenburg NJ at one point I believe.
One of Mary or Harry's parents lastname may have been Mueller or Smith.
Harry and Mary were divorced, and Al and Effie's last names may have been changed or called Hort for a while due to divorce stigma at that time, she may have even changed her name back to Leigh.
Mary and Harry both may have remairied, and moved to surounding states; it is unknown to us.

Alfred Smith Horton b. 1902 d. 1964 married Angnes R. Hummer (daughter of Embley Ruppell Hummer, and Louise Julia Zielstorff) of frenchtown NJ. Alfred was chief of police kingwood township NJ.
Alfred was raised by his grandparents after the divorce (Mueller?/Smith?)

Effie later married an unknown Patterson, had a daughter, and resided in titusville NJ.

This is a huge tear in our family history, and I would love to be able to tell my mother about her grandparents and beyond.

I know there are quite a few Leigh's in NY/NJ but my grandfather was born in Philadelphia. His name was Charles Rowland Leigh, b. @1917 d. @1984 and was one of 12 children. He had a sister named Sarah. His father was not Charles but his first name may have begun with a C. I have no other information except he married Gertrude Isabel Klenk, also of Philadelphia and they had one son named Gary Rowland, b. 11/26/1940 or 41. I did hear at one point a possible name change from Stoneleigh but I don't know if and when that may have occured. Anyone have any info or thoughts?

Sometime after the 1891 census the family headed by Ellen LEIGH nee
NAYLOR widow up and left St Helens and moved to Bolton.

John Pauls ship info said his mother Ellen LEIGH lived at 161 Dean Church Lane Bolton in 1909.

I have found out that there was a rumor that James Naylor Leigh was married 2 times and had 4 children with first wife .... names of wife and children are unknown. Know that he married 2nd time to edith Ann Lomax in Farnsworth Bolton in May of 1926... James down as a widower in this marriage. Married at Church of St Gregory the Great RC in Farnsworth...had 1 child from this marriage. This child only knows the rumor of the first marriage.

Know James Naylor Leigh lived in Bolton as according to will of Uncle Issac Openshaw who died in May of 1921 has James living at 52 Pilkington St, Bolton as one of the executers of his will. At this time I do not have copy of will and am waiting for it.

I also found out that James Naylor Leigh was in the Navy

James Naylor Leigh died in Sept of 1952

So out of all the children of John and Ellen LEIGH nee NAYLOR the only 2 that I know something on are James Naylor Leigh and John Paul Leigh

Ellen LEIGH nee NAYLORs parents were JAMES NAYLOR br St Helens and ANN GLYNN br Ireland I know that Ellen was baptised Catholic but her father was CofE and am not sure that she raised all the children Catholic. In this Naylor line sometimes the boys were raised CofE and the girls were raised Catholic. It could be this way in Ellen LEIGH's children.

If anyone knows of this line of LEIGHs in Bolton would appriciate any info on them ...If not well their info is now on the web and someone might come along one day and find it

I am looking for information on Albert Theodore Lay born in Jacksonville Florida about 1860 and moving to Haines City Florida prior to1885.There he married Ella Head and they had six children (all born in Haines City):

DIED in Newnan, at the residence of Col. Wilcoxon, May 17th, Mrs. Margaret Leigh, wife of Mr. Anselm Leigh and daughter of the late Rev. J.Y. Alexander, aged 47 years. Mrs. Leigh was dedicated to the lord in early infancy; was reared by pious parents, and through the whole course of her life shed around her the light of a Christian. For many months previous to her death, she was in declining health, but in every pain, she recognized the Ruling Hand, feeling assured that the sufferings of the body only purify the soul and better prepared it for a home in heaven. She leaves a husband and eight children whose hearts and home are desolate with out her. But the comforting thought is theirs that their loss is her gain.

His son was Albert Jean Eduward LEIGH born 1898 July 11 in Brooklyn. He registered for the draft in 1918 and married Sophie in New York in 1921. They are in the 1920 and 1930 censuses in Brooklyn. Their son Albert Jr. was born ca 1921 in New York.

Looking for descendants of William Flexney Leigh born London 1809. He married Eliza Dennis. Children were Albert, Emma, Leah, William, Eliza, Arthur, Ellen, also Eleazer born between 1855 and 1879. Albert and Arthur emigrated to America in late 1800s, early 1900s. Albert settled in Boston and was an engraver for a casket manufacturer. Arthur was a methodist clergyman working all over Maine, he died in 1947 in Boston. Arthur married Marion and had two children Alice and Donald. Albert married Kate (in England) and had 3 sons and two daughters - Ernest, Mabel, Lilian, Ruth, Raymond and Harold. Albert died in 1947 in Portland.

John Cornelius Leigh, from NY, may have had a brother named Jesse and a father of the same name.We're told he had a sister Adaline Muzzey/Muzzy. She moved to Eau Claire Co. WI with a son John Muzzey/Muzzy. They were Scottish. John moved to Monroe Co. (Sparta) WI and married Caroline Rathbun (from Herkimer Co. NY) there in 1855. He joined the Civil War and died in Louisiana in 1862. Also looking for connections to William and Rosella Leigh of Monroe Co. WI, perhaps another brother.
