Hello Arthur

I am researching my family history and have discovered one of my relatives Evelyn Beatrice Peters married a Solomon Lemin in Zeehan in 1905. I was wondering if this is the same Solomon Lemin that you are related too. She is the daughter of my gg grandfather James Peters of Launceston who was of mixed race his mother being Chinese. He was born in Canton.

Any help you could give would be appreciated.

Ann

Hi All

While researching my family history of James Peters from Launceston Tasmania I found the marriage of Evelyn Beatrice Peters to a Solomon Lemin which took place at the Salvation Army Barracks in Zeehan Tasmania on 1 February 1905. I believe this is the second marriage for Solomon Lemin, his first wife being Margaret Truscott who he appears to possibly have married in Pwllheli in Wales. Can any one help me with information about this man. Evelyn Peters is a child of my ggg grandfather James Peters as a result of a relationship with a Lydia Prosser

Thanks Ann

We are waiting for a birth certificate to tie her branch into the rest of Chas's tree. I have a bunch of certificates on order that should hopefully tie a few more twigs into the system. I will send you my latest full version once the certificates have arrived.
eric
I am responding to your query about Charles Lemin and Sophia Boddy. They were my great grandparents, and were married on July 19 1873 in Northumberland. Charles Lemin was born in 1852 at Landrake or Lishend in the district of St Germans in Cornwall. (I plan to order a copy of his birth certificate). His father was Solomon Lemin, according to the marriage certificate. Both men were coal miners.

Charles and Sophia (her father was a coal miner too) had six children, of whom my grandmother Florence Lemin was the third child, and second daughter. She later married Fergus Richard Pickels, and their second daughter Elsie born in 1904 was my late mother.

The word in the family was that the Lemins left Cornwall when work dried up in the tin mines, and came north to Northumberland to work in the coal mines there. In 1891 and 1901 according to the censuses for those years, Charles and his family were living in Windy Nook in County Durham.

I would be most interested to find out more about the Lemins. Are Charles Lemin and his father Solomon ancestors of yours? Have you a found a place for them on the Lemin family tree? Is Lemin originally a French name, and when did the family first come to Cornwall?

Would be most grateful for further information.

Best wishes,
Sara Payne

I think that you have looked at what I put on my tree last year, and have expanded some of the information through your own research. I do have more information on generations going back in time from Mary Coppin (your 1st generation), as well as a few more details. I also have more generations that come down closer to the present time, but have not posted the information on my tree, due to privacy concerns about people who may yet be living.

I would be happy to correspond and share information privately with you off the public site, as it appears that you are a direct descendant of some of these people. It appears that you could help me fill a few gaps, as well. I have not yet done as much research as you have on them after they came to the USA side of the ocean

David Coppin
coppin@comcast.net

My dad and I are currently trawling through these threads trying to answer all questions. I suppose we should start with his living memory of ancestors that goes back to his grandfather and relatives of that age.
His father was called Wilfred Lemin married to Cathleen Tonkin and lived in the St Mewan Parish in Cornwall in a village called Polgooth.
Wilfreds Father was called Charles (a Lemin family name) we are not sure of his wifes name. We have documents that list all of his working life from the mines of Polgooth to the mines of South Africa, he died of "miners lung" and needed to claim insurance from the south african goiverment, which is why we have such an excelent record of his life.
Wilfred and Cathleen were shop owners who had a grocery shop in truro "international stores" . Cathleen sadly passed on in the 1970's and Wilfred a few years afterwards. They continued to have the place at Polgooth in which my dad was born in and is still in the family..
My father and I would be very interested in seeing the previous work done on the Lemin family tree. as we have some other old family records that could be scanned and E mailed.
My father also has some records from the mormons database in saltlake city that he got while he was visiting. all about the St ewe Parish cornwall in the mid 19th century.
You can mail me direct at garylemin@yahoo.co.uk
Regards

Also my father did have a newspaper cutting regarding the Willaim Lemin who was 102 years old, it was about how he lied about his age and said he was 104 years old (probably got another letter from the queen or something) The story was about how he enjoyed a day at the fair he supposedly walked there and back. Also my dad has a cutting about his relative Charlie Lemin ( a complete "jack the lad" by all local accounts) and his wedding day that was reprinted in the Cornish Guardian here in cornwall a couple of years back.
Regards
Gary Lemin
We are from Polgooth, my father still has the family house that has been in the Lemin family for generations (my dad Roger lemin was born there). Its an old set of miners cottages 2 doors down from the pub, so quite handy really.
I am offshore on an oil rig at the moment in the middle of the North sea, so I will not be able to quiz my dad for a few days yet.
I plan to see him this week so I will pass on the Info.
As far as I know we are the only Lemins in the St Mewan Parish and certainly Polgooth.
Regards
Gary Lemin

I also know that, we have a Wilfred and Charles being my grandfather and great grandfather. I think. I will have to check with my dad as he has all the knowlege of such things.
I will mail you back soon.
Any other help or questions do not hesitate to ask.
Regards
Gary Lemin
P.S we still live around St Austell

Marsha,

Have you tried the soundex search on the name Lemin in the 1900 Census'? The name Lemin is spelled many ways. My husband's great grandfather is spelled Laman. They were in Delware County, PA.

I will keep you in mind if I come across something.

Susie
