Hi there,

It was so good hearing from you. I am sorry I haven't responded earlier but I haven't been able to work on the "TREE" for awhile.

I can clear up the name being VOGL. My father is Clement L. Powers and his mother was Theresa Marie Vogl, married Joseph Edward Powers. Theresa's father was Alois Vogl (born in Bavaria on June 21, 1843 and died in July 13, 1932 and is buried in Traverse City)and her mother was Amelia Clor and she was born Dec. 22, 1849 in Ontario, Canada and died in April 26, 1890 in Nottawa Twp, Isabella County, MI. My grandmother, Theresa, was the 6th child of 13 and her sister was Magdalena Rose Vogl. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery In Traverse City.

My father remembers that after Benjamin died at one point she lived with his family at 715 N. Hamilton. He only remembers seeing the Lenz girls a few times when they were younger. He will be 100 yrs old this June 12 and I am hoping we will be able to bring him to MI for old time sightseeing trip.

I have more info on the Vogl's side and would be glad to share it. Thanks for your info. Hope to hear from you. Jan

Hi, I am trying to find a link between your family and mine. I have Augusta Wilhelmine Lenz born on 18/8/1863 and her parents, Gustave and Henriette Lenz. Gustave born 28/8/1825. He is one year older than your Frederick William so they may have been brothers or cousins. What address was Frederick's birth? Were there any other siblings?

Gustave's wife Henriette was born 5/10/1834. I have no maiden name for her or where they were born.
Hello it is nice to hear from you. I remember my grandmother talking about your father.. I believe he is the one who put the bathroom in the house that she bought.. it had an outhouse when she bought it. I remember Great Aunt Fran.. she made great cheesecake. Unfortunately my father was in the military when I was growing up so we didn't get to meet very many of our family. My mother was Dolores and they had a brother named Raymond. I never met him. By the time that my family moved to Wisconsin the family wasn't talking to Raymond for some reason.

Grandmother always talked fondly to going up to Neenah. I remember Colleen talking about their trips. Sadly, Colleen did not have a very happy life and lived a rough life on the streets. She passed away, alone, in a hospital in Chicago I believe. She was in her 30's when she passed. Babs took in the three children that she left behind.

I have moved back to Wisconsin and live in Racine. Have been back almost 20 years now. I have received some newspaper clippings about the life that they had.. One of the clippings speaks of Great-Aunt Fran running off with the getaway driver of Al Capone.. honest to goodness.. they married and he later passed away. I remember Fran talking very fondly of her first husband and how she had him cremated and she buried the ashes under a bush that he favored. Grandma never talked of her childhood and neither did my mother. Just about everything I know I have learned from those who have posted.

Sorry to hear about your job loss but I am thankful that we connected. If you would like to contact me directly please do so at lauraheld67@gmail.com Perhaps we could get together for coffee somewhere and meet.

I look forward to your reply

Laura Held

Hello,

Your grandmother was my father's sister. My father was Albert Lenz. Your grandmother used to visit us at the home I grew up in, located in Neenah Wisconsin. She came on a train from Racine. I remember my Aunt Esther as a great conversationalist. I also remember that she looked a lot like my father. She worked in a nursing home and I recall that she worked for many years. She often spoke about her daughter Barbara, but she called her Babs.

I have a sister named Christine and a brother named James. My brother passed away 12 years ago. We never got to know our cousins or many aunts and uncles, because they all lived far away. Only my dad's brother Ed and his wife Ada lived in Neenah.

I see that you received some replies. Your grandmother's life was not an easy one. I know that they were all split up after their parents died. My father was 13 when their parents died. He rode all over the country on boxcars during the Great Depression. Then when he grew up, he spent 5 years in the army and fought in WW II. I have pictures of him visiting his sister Fran out in California, while in the army, before he shipped out. I believe he was closer to your grandmother though. Aunt Fran did come to visit also, but it was 30 years since he had seen her last. I didn't know her very well.

When Aunt Esther came to visit a few times, she brought a little girl named Kelly with her. I believe it was her grand-daughter. Which grand-daughter are you?

Just to clarify: the little girl that Aunt Esther brought with her was named Colleen. She called her Kelly.

I met most of my father's siblings and their wives when they came to visit. It was a long time ago, but I do remember them. If anyone out there wants to communicate yet. Wish I had seen this post a while back. I was working all the time. I am on layoff from my job right now.

Hope you receive this message.

Annette (Lenz) Cowling
Hi cousin!

Dr. Arnold Lenz was my Grandfather, b. may 10 1888, d. july 13 1952
Born in Hauingen Germany, Immigrated to NY 1906 at age 18.
his fathers name is Arnold Lenz, in both cases they have no middle name, (though newspaper articles put in a W. as a middle name, and it has always bothered my mom). Draft records confirm this as well.

His father whom is found in germany history as a mayor, and his brother or uncle, can't remember, was a owner of VW, and you will find the decendents of them still running or working there. If you follow it back far enough they are decended from a royal family but don't remember which one at this point, but it is in germany. There was NO name change from lenz to lentz. lentz is a different family.

Grandpa and grandma had three daughters, Kate the oldest, than Nolda, and then Barbara the youngest, Kate is passed away, not too sure about Barbara, but my mom Nolda is very much alive, a wonderful and fun person that I love very much, She speaks of her grandma Magdalena Rose often, and really enjoyed her, as she lived with them. Even though, grandpa was well off for the times, the women still continued to do their own canning and helped with all chores, not quit as spoiled as accused as long as Magdalena was alive as wekk. I've heard my mom call her Rose as well.

I had't seen my aunts since I was younger, one had an almond farm and sold to dimond almond (Barbara), the other had a pumpkin farm or just a huge pumpkin patch(kate) and a very loud parrot of some sort, I've only met one of my cousins, and only aware of one (male).

Grandpa and Grandma were killed in a car that hit a train, (among family, I have heard that something was "wrong" with the brake line) while on their way to pick up a daughter, it makes sence that it was a test car, since He was a vice pres of GM (& gen. man. of pontiac div) at time of his death. Newspapers printed that he and amelia only had 2 daughters, when in fact there was 3, most likely because the 3rd daughter was not picked up yet, when witness saw the family immedietly after the wreck. Amelia died with in hours of the wreck.

He also won a franklin award & whites award for inventing adding nickel to the die for stronger molds so they could do production (which unfortantly caused layoffs, but also changed the Iron age), GM takes full credit for it. But the awards are still on record.

I don't know what happened to Kate and Barbara after their death, but my mom last bit of being raised was by another family as her guardians, but in the mean time I'm sure Kate as the oldest had her hands full, the three of them must have been extremely frightened and burdened.

The old house built in 1939, that my mom grew up in is now Warwick Hills Golf and country club in Blanc mi, at first, the stables where the mens locker room, before they built it up. In the main country club (moms old home) in the living room, you will see the letter L on the mantle of the fire place with decorations of oak leaves and acorns, part of the family crest.

The golf course (buick open+)and the many neighborhoods around up to 300 acres was grandpas farm, he liked sheep, had horses cows chickens duck etc etc, and grew crops.

When I find those records in Germany, I'll pass them on, now someone give me some wonderful stories too.

Hi Brian,

The information I have was that Margaret Lenz Case died in Fort Wayne, IN in June 1901. This information came from Nick Lenz. I think he told me this came from Aunt Bessie who would be Bessie Clara Lenz, daughter of Henry Lenz. I have not verified this information, so you may want to look at Fort Wayne, IN records. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.
Diane

I know she was born in Mar 1870 and died on 1 Jun 1901 but I don't know where. I would think it was probably close to Danbury but I can't find any record of her.

Hi Miki,

I just saw your family tree and message. I am Katherine Lenz Uehle's granddaughter Diane. I have also been working on the family genealogy on and off for the last ten years. I have not been on Ancestry in awhile, but recently got some information on Bridget Spellman's family that two other cousins and I are working on. Would love to talk to you if you see this message.

Do NOT speak German, but if you speak English, I am looking for family of my great-great-grandmother, Anna Elizabeth Lenz, born 17 Jun 1818 in Aumenau, Limburg-Weilburg, Hessen, Germany, and died 8 Dec 1873 in Wirbelau, Limburg-Weilburg, Hessen, Germany. She was married to Johann Peter Harrach (1813-1896). Their children were Wilhelm Harrach (1843-1885), Elizabeth May Harrach (1845- ), Peter Adam Harrach (1851- ), and my great-grandfather Ludwig George Harrach (1856-1940). I do not have anything on Anna Lenz. Do you know anything of her Lenz family?

revusup@yahoo.com I will give you what I have. My great Grandfather William Lenz abt 1867-69(immigrated 1872), married(in March 29, 1902) Minnie(Vetter)abt 1868(immigrated 1886), Children Frank, Esther and several others, possibly Louie, Eddie and William, not sure on the rest yet since I have just started my search. My grandfather was Frank (son of William & Minnie) whom died in Arizona in July 1975. I believe William's parents names are Carl Lenz and Maria Beckman both of Germany, and Minnie's are Wilhelm Vetter and Henriette Diener both of Germany. I also heard that either William or his father or possibly a brother had killed the mother and then himself and would very much like to find out if this is true? Let me know if you have found anything different? Hope this helps. Wendy

Esther H. Lenz

I am looking for the family of my grandmother. I know very little about her family. Her name was Esther H. Lenz. Her parents were from Germany. I do not know their names. Her father shot their mother and then shot himself. I know that they lived in Wisconsin and the family was split up. When I was a very small child I met one of my grandmother's brothers. I can't remember his name. My grandmother passed away in Racine, WI. I would really like to make a connection.

Anyone have Lenz family from Hannover, Germany?

Please bear with me - this may be a bit long. I'm hoping to find someone who may have even the tiniest clue about this family, whether directly or indirectly (ANY info is helpful). If you even slightly suspect that you have information on this family - children, parents, etc. PLEASE RESPOND. Any little clue helps as I am fairly good at tracking down even the most obscure leads.

I have been working one branch of my family tree FOREVER without success.

My family (the Steingrandts) come from Hannover Stadt, or the immediate suburbs of the city.

I have a Dorothea Sophia Elisabeth Clara Maria (aka Maria) Steingrandt who married a Franz Josef Hugo (aka Hugo) Linz in St. Louis in July 1838.

My research on this couple tells me this:

1) I have been unable to find much trace of the name Linz in Hannover in any time period, but I have seen plenty of Lenz, so I'm willing to believe that Linz was an Americanized spelling and that the originial name was Lenz.

2) This couple married in St. Louis only 2 months after the Steingrandts arrived in New York. Since Hugo Linz/Lenz was NOT on the ship with the Steingrandts, and I have a record of a Hugo Lentz arriving in Baltimore in 1834, I have concluded that Maria and Hugo knew each other in Germany. That means that Hugo would have had to have been from Hannover or lived in Hannover in at least the early 1830's. When I say Hannover I mean the city or its surrounding suburbs.

The scant information I have on Hugo Linz/Lenz is as follows:

-Born ~1811 in Germany

-Immigrated to the U.S. in 1834

-Submitted his Declaration of Intention to become a U.S. Citizen in 1839

-Purchased land near St. Louis from the U.S. General Land Office in 1840

-Subsequently became a U.S. citizen, year unknown

-Applied for a U.S. passport to visit Germany "on business" in 1847

-Article in Alton, IL newspaper from 1867 indicates Maria Steingrandt Linz/Lenz had been in Germany for 20 years, matching the passport application year exactly (see: http://www.steingrandt.org/images/anniversary_lg.jpg for details)

What I don't know:

-If Maria & Hugo had any children (if they did, they would have been born between 1839 and somewhere in the 1850's. Children born after 1847 would have been born in Germany).

-When Hugo and Maria died

-Where they lived when they returned to Germany

Hi,
thank you will do that, do you have any information as to why the family left Prussia, it is all art of the tapestry that makes up a family story. The photo I have of Bertha, who had passed away before any of her grandchildren were born looks like me. My sister Nicky looks like Julius and Ida's daughter Laura.
Keep in touch, many thanks Linda

Linda, re your Julius Gottlieb Friedrick and Ida WUISKE ...check out the spelling WINSKE instead of WUISKE. Google the words Queensland Archives Immigration. 1864-1878 .. using WINSKE you will see that Julius and Ida immigrated to Queensland Australia with two children, Auguste aged 2 and Emile, an infant, 11 January 1886 on the ship Duke of Westminster.

Hi,
My Bertha was the daughter of Julius Gottlieb Friederick and Ida Wuiske , Bertha was born in 31 May 1890 in Toowong in Brisbane Australia and married my Grandfather Denis Sheahan in 27 May 1913. I think that Bertha was the first of their children to be born in Australia, they migrated here with 2 children. I would like to know how Julius and Ida arrived in Australia, which ship and via what port if you know that information.
thank you. Linda

Re: John Lenz in Cincinnati, Ohio

My wife's ancestor, Margaretha Barbara Lenz, b 1825 or 1827, was married in 1854 in Cincinnati. It's believed she came to US from Oberfranken (village unknown) Germany ~ 1849 or 1850. I've done research trying to find her Lenz relatives in Cincinnati - unsuccessful.
I have collected the following data which might be of some assistance to you -

Cincinnati, Hamilton Co. LENZ males include (1) Michael, 1849/50, 1850/51, 1853, drygoods, 178 W 5th (between Race & Elm); not in 1850 census; naturalization record Hamilton Co Vol 12-A, p.77; (2) Mathias Lenz, 1855, nat. record, Hamilton Co Vol. 31, p.194; (3) Leopold, 1856 & 1860 census, Ward 10, p46, roll 974, pt 5. (The dates in this listing are city directory dates.)

allen at nconnect dot net
