Are you continuing this research? I would like to find the immigrant of our Lesley family, that is, father of John Lesley born about 1775 in Fairfield Co SC, died 1860-70 in Pickens Co., SC, buried in old family cemetery near Frank or Gordon Lesley's place.

I will have to dig around and find the info on Moses being the son of THomas but it comes from multiple sources- My grandfather talked of it to me back before he died several years ago, he had knowledge of it. Also saw it on some genealogy websites and census records. Moses lived near where the Little River meets the Broad River in Fairfield Co and his wife Frances Jones was from adjacent Newberry Co. The best link to the Meriwether book is listed below on archive.org. Has the full text. James Leslie is mentioned regarding his land grant on the Congaree River in 1747 and his subsequent move to Fairfield Co in the early 1750s. Moses moved to Pickens County from Fairfield when William Leslie was a child after Thomas's death in 1798. This is the link to the book- The Expansion of SC 1729-1765. Very interesting reading. I am in Afghanistan at the moment and its a little hard for me to track down some of this information on Moses but I will give it a shot. The online book is informative. http://archive.org/stream/expansionofsouth00meriuoft/expansi...

The William Leslie(Lesley) in this conversation, was born in Fairfield County SC circa 1795(wife Rosannah Hendricks). He was the son of Moses Leslie(born Fairfield Co- circa 1774) and Frances Jones(born Newberry County - circa 1777). Moses and family moved to Pickens Co around 1800(+/-)after a treaty with the Cherokee opened up the old Pendleton District. Moses is the son of Thomas Leslie (born Fairfield Co. 1751, died 1798). Thomas is most likely the son of James Leslie(born circa 1720) who moved to Fairfield Co from down on the Congaree River near modern day Cayce SC-old Raiford Creek area- around 1750. James Leslie received a land grant for that farm on the Congaree River in 1747- but moved later(flood prone area on Congaree) to the area in Fairfield County near where the Little River flows into the Broad River. James was a militia commander during the Cherokee War(part of the French and Indian War) 1759-1760. This information is in Robert L Meriwether's book "The Expansion of SC 1729-1765" and the full text is online through the Univ of SC's library website. James' father is unclear, but looking at naming patterns and people in the region at that time- I would look at Jacobite POW Alexander(James) Leslie who came to SC from Scotland in 1716 as a POW from the Battle of Preston in the Jacobite War of 1715.May have spent time in VA and SC. That is just my best guess from research. Alot of information on this ilk of the Leslie(Lesley) Clan can be located at cemetaries at the Griffin Baptist Church, Cross Roads Baptist Church and Oolenoy Baptist Church in Pickens County SC. Grip Fast- David Clark Leslie(Pickens SC)- Kabul Afghanistan.

We are trying to locate any information connecting our ggrandfather. we have hit a brick wall for many many years but feel there has to be someone somewhere that can help.
Our ggrandfathers name was James William Lesley..born 1858 McNairy,County,Tenn. We believe his father to be William Lesley, but no confirmation..He always said his mother was full blooded Cherokee Indian. We have located his sister and her decendants. Her name was Elizabeth (Betty) Beard. We have a marriage license that shows a marriage between Jane Lesley and Neilon Beard in 1861..the parents of Betty Beard. This would indicate that something happened to our ggrandfathers father and then his mother remarried.
Anyone that would have any information of Lesley's in McNairy County, Tn and in the border counties of north Miss. and south Tenn. please advise.
Thanks,
Marion Hoosier

So, and maybe related to my husband's, but I have not been able to confirm it. The only connection I can find is in the height - 6'2", 6'4", and 6'6" of some of the male members of our Pickens County descendants in relation to some I met of the Lesley York Co. descendants. Just a possibility.

Lynne, I have found a connection between your Ms. Leslie and my Francis or, rather, his father Samuel. I'm betting she is our Francis' sister. I found deeds where Samuel (Sr.) transferred land to Jr., and parts of the same original parcel were transferred to Francis Leslie and to Samuel Pollock and a McConaghay. The old map I had, forget the date right now, does not show Pollocks in the vicinity, but it was just a snapshot in time, I think about 20 or 30 years later.

Do you have any info on where they lived when Ms. Leslie died? Are you close enough to go to the graveyard to look for a marker? I may be, as I live within 20 miles of where the land was transferred to Pollock. Let me know if you think I might find anything (once the weather breaks that is!).

If you would like copies of the court paper relating to Samuel Leslie Sr.'s first wife's death and then the deeds for a number of these transfers of land (which include other surnames as neighbors, witnesses, etc., contact me at nupdegraph@zoominternet.net. I would rather type in word and/or I could make copies and send you snail mail.

Dear Nancy,

Thank you for your reply and help. Had a question concerning William Morrow. He does not fit with a birth date of 1784. I found information that confirms he was born earlier than 1784 and in Ireland. I am working on Samuel Lesslie and Francis. Will let you know what I find.

Lynne

Look like the governor, huh? That would be an interesting research.

I have gone through my Morrow and Leslie general files but will still go though my specific Francis Leslie file and map file and see what I find.

I think I neglected to give you John G. Hennon's email address. He was research Morrows and seemed to be more professional about it than me (I call myself a hunter and gatherer, do not necessarily pull court records to confirm things, more get it from old family members). This is an July 2001 address, hope it still works for him. hennon+@pitt.edu

I also have a Butler Co. bits and pieces book of about 500 pages that indexes some Pollocks. At a glance I did not find your given name but I will look further with this last info. Sometimes the families went back and forth with Lawrence and Beaver Co., like three of "my girls" married and moved to the Sheep Hill area of New Castle, Lawrence Co., in the 1860s. If you find a connection to Francis Leslie, please let me know. My 90+ year old friend will be excited. She is in assisted living because of her physical health but her mind is sharp yet.

Dear Nancy,

You may receive another reply from me. I was in the middle of writing when distracted and the response disappeared.
My research began with a family bible and my great grandfather, Samuel Hindman's death certificate stating that his mother, Hannah Pollock, was born in Mahoningtown, Mercer County Pennsylvania. The family bible states that Hannah was born 19 Sep 1807 and died 06 Oct 1896. I have spent years looking for her parents.

I found some writings of a Leland W Pollock in a book titled "Polk Family and Kinsman by William Harrison Polk who listed Hannah's parents as Samuel Pollock and Miss Lesley/Leslie. There was also a reference that Samuel married a woman by the name of Margaret Morrow Heenan after Miss Lesley died. Samuel's parents were Joseph Pollock and
Hannah Van Dyke/Dike. After Hannah Van Dyke died Joseph married a Margaret Grey or Gray. The Van Dyke information comes from the DAR. Miss Leslie/Lesley did come from Beaver County.

I will now read over very carefully what you have written and see how all the pieces fit together. There is another bit of information. My great grandfather, Samuel Hindman, named one of his sons, Marion Leslie Hindman. I have a picture of Hannah Pollock Hindman. She has dark hair and eyes as does her daughter, Sarah. Hannah was referred to with great respect. She was always called "Mrs. Hindman or Madam" Another curious thing is that there seems to be some family likeness to Governor James Pollock. My father and Governor Pollock sort of look alike???

Hi, Lynne: I did not find out more about "Miss Leslie" but we are connected. March 30, 1812 Samuel Lesslie ux conveyed 200 acres to Samuel Pollock at Volume C page 199, and I have a conveyance June 2, 1812 from Samuel Lesslie to Samuel Lesslie, Jr. at Vol. C page 232. I have the description Bradens 3rd District Lot 26 (as if it refers to both of them but (?) This is in the Beaver Co. Grantor Index 1800-1918.

In 1824 Samuel Lesslie Jr. us transfers to Robert White a Lot 20 in Bradens D. Dep. Volume G page 103.

In 1827 Samuel Lesslie us transfers to John McConaghy (sheriff) Lot 26. Volume G page 474.

On June 20, 1827, Samuel Pollock transfers to Francis Leslie
200 acres in North Sewickly Township. Volume H page 40-41.
I think this is in the NE corner of Beaver Co.

I believe Samuel Lesslie Sr. was the father of Samuel Jr and Francis who married Eleanor Morrow but I have not done the research to prove it. Francis and Eleanor were who I was researching. Samuel was married to Mary Ann who died "in Westmoreland County" which then included most all of SW PA. I can't find that orphans court paper right now but will look for it.

I ran into a John G. Hennon who I did some give and take with on Morrows. He says Margaret Morrow was the sister of Eleanor, that "Margaret Morrow married Joseph Hennon (John G. Hennon's gr gr gr grandparents); they lived in Wayne Twp. no more than a quarter mile from Thomas Morrow. Next door to Joseph and Margaret Hennon was Joseph's brother Abel Hennon & it was Abel's son Thomas Hennon who was the first husband of Thomas Morrow's daughter Margaret Morrow." Now that really confuses me (Nancy Up) but maybe I am just tired.

In another email John said Francis Leslie made a deposition in 1861 in support of his sister-in-law's petition for a pension for her late husband's service during the War of 1812. Francis Leslie and Thomas Hennon gave the depositions in support of Margaret's petition but the pension was denied.

I think the problem here is too many generations using the same names so let me try to describe a chart of it. I think I got this all below from John G. Hennon but it might partly have come from a History of the County of ____ book.

William Morrow b.c.1784 marries Eleanor _______
They had 5 kids I know of, so chart these 5 under William and Eleanor from left to right: 1. Thomas; 2. Hugh; 3. Charles; 4. Margaret (1); 5. Nancy.

Under 1. Thomas, put an unknown 1st wife and a 2nd wife Margaret Gibson, and 11 children altogether, John G. Hennon says, including Margaret (2) and Eleanor.

Under 4. Margaret (1), show her married to Joseph Hennon (who has a brother Abel Hennon).
My charting shows Abel Hennon having a son Thomas Hennon who married Margaret Morrow (2). John G. says Margaret (2) married Thomas Hennon 1st and then Samuel Pollock 2nd. So Margaret (1)'s husband's brother married Margaret's brother Thomas' daughter.

Francis Leslie and Thomas Hennon served in the same company in the War of 1812 and Thomas died during the war. And, as I said, Francis gave that deposition for Margaret (2), his sister-in-law.

So, I have no evidence of who your "Miss Leslie" is but I would bet she is Francis' sister or niece or something. I would be glad to photocopy what I have on Francis and Samuel Leslie if you wanted to research them further, but I am not actually related to the Leslies. I am an Updegraph, and my 90+ year old co-Updegraph-researcher is descended from Francis Leslie's granddaughter who married an Updegraph, so I am not actively researching them further, I jsut did a good bit as a favor for this elderly woman who is not computerized to pay her back for all the Updegraph info she gave me.

What do I have? I have some additionally listings of Grantor/Grantee deeds from Beaver Co., the Orphans' Court document about Mary Ann Leslie's husband and children, and some interesting historical stuff about the Beaver Co. land grants and the Chew tract, including a map that shows where Samuel Leslie Sr.'s land was.

Let me know what I can help you with.

Hi. I have not looked at my info on this line in a long time but I will review it. By any chance did your Miss Lesley come from the NE corner of Beaver Co.? The name Mary Ann was wife to one of them I think. I found "orphan documents" declaring dealing with Mary Ann's husband and children in "Westmoreland County" and I think it is the same family who came to the NE corner of Beaver Co. My oldest traced back would be Mary Ann's son (if I am remembering right!) I have an old map somewhere showing their neighbor landowners about 1800 and I'll look for Pollocks. I will get back to you.
Nancy Up

Lesley/Leslie from Beaver County Pennsylvania. My great, great, great grandfather Samuel Pollock born 1780 married a Miss Leslie/Lesley from Beaver County PA. She died after three children were born and Samuel married Margaret Morrow. The three children born to Samuel Pollock and Miss Leslie/Lesley are Hannah Pollock (My gr,gr,grandmother)who married Robert Hindman; Samuel Pollock; and Mary Ann Pollock who married Joseph Zimmerman.

I am interested in the given name of Miss Leslie/Lesley and the names of her parents.

Re: Robert Wilson Lesley m. Mary Jane Stegall

Robert Wilson Lesley is the son of William and Rosann Lesley. Robert is buried in the Union Methodist Church Cemetary close to Nettleton Ms (Lee Co.). His brother J.H Lesley and his daughter Lula V Nix are also buried there. He was in Co. C 8th CSA Cavalry and fought under Col. William B. Wade, Generals Joseph Wheeler, N.B. Forrest and many others. He was in the battles of Shiloh (where his brother T.N. Lesley was shot and mortally wounded and died 4 days after the battle), and Chickamauga along with many other skirmishes during his time in the war. He surrendered in Atlanta. Although he fought for the CSA entire war, his epitaph reads "This is in memorial for the soldiers that fought for the Union". I havnt been able to figure that out. He did not marry M.J. Stegall until after the war. I know his children were Lula Viola and Thomas Henry. I am not aware of any other children but there is a possibility. Thomas Henry Lesley is my Gr. grandfather.

William and Rosann are buried in New Salem Cemetary in Troy Ms. (Pontotoc Co.) along with other of Robert's siblings and Robert's wife M.J. Stegall Lesley.

William b. 1795 and Rosann traveled from Abbeville S.C. area to Bibb Co. Al. somewhere around the time of 1820's along with a vast list of other people. It is believed among researchers that Rosann was a McAllister but that is not totally confirmed. The reason we think this is because her first son was named Francis McAllister Lesley. There is a Francis Mcallister that is shown to be traveling with them to Bibb Co. that is approx the age Rosann's father would be but, that is a story to be told at a later time if you are interested. It appears William Lesley moved the family from Bibb Co. Al to Pontotoc Co. Ms some time in the 1830's after the removal of the indians from that area. He was one of the founders of New Salem Church in Troy Ms. and some of the church records show him as deacon and elder.

I have a lot of other info. on this family if you are interested.
Re: John Harris LESLEY/Talladega Co., AL

The first John Harris Lesley 1784 SC - 1855 AL who was married to Mary Gilliland 1782 NC - 1856 AL was brother to my 3 great grandfather, Rober Hall Lesley. They were sons of William Lesley and Ann Caldwell. John and Mary left SC (Abbeville District) after their children were born and were in IN for some time and not long after their sister, Frances' husband died in IN, Theodore had them move to AL to be closer to family as they were getting on in age and their brother, Moses was handicapped and needed special attention.
Many of the Lesley children relocated to other parts or in my case, Robert Hall stayed in Abbeville but his son Samuel, my greatgreatgrandfather moved to MS.
I have been researching this family for years and still doing so. Much easier today with the world wide web at my disposal.
Would be interested in sharing.
Mary

Are you still searching? I am searching for the family of my great grandfather as well. He was James William Lesley, born 1858 0r 59 in McNairy Co., TN according to his word. The earliset census I have for him is 1900 Bell Co., TX. He is also in 1910, 1920, 1930 in LA. All census gives his place of birth as TN. I have never found his parents or siblings in a census and do not know their names. He had a sister Betty but I do not know her married name. His mother was believed to be a Thorpe and was Cherokee Indian.
Does any of this sound familiar?

It's been a long time since you wrote this so I don't know if you'll even see this, but Emberry Lesley and Sarah Elizabeth Coffee were my paternal grandmother's parents. Her name was Opal Mae Lesley. I've been searching for info on him forever with no luck. If you've found anything on him I'd greatly appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Darla McDuff

John Harris LESLEY/Talladega Co., AL

Below is a book excerpt on John Harris LESLEY, b. 1850, Talladega Co., AL. The book is available in its entirety on Heritage Quest. This is a retyped copy from my files.
Evelyn Leslie
co-Administrator LESLIE DNA Project

NOTABLE MEN OF ALABAMA: Personal and Genealogical, with portraits
Originally published: Atlanta: Southern Historical Association, 1904
Reprint: Spartanburg, South Carolina: Reprint Company, 1976

Pages 363 and 364 of 944

JOHN HARRIS LESLEY, a well known citizen of Talladega County, was born in that county, on Christmas day, in the year 1850. His paternal grandparents, John HARRIS and Mary LESLEY, went from Indiana to South Carolina soon after their marriage, and later came to Alabama, where they passed the remainder of their lives. While living in South Carolina, their son, Theodore Lesley, the father of John Harris, was born. There he married Rebecca BROCK, and after the death of her father, Charles BROCK, came with her mother and his parents to Alabama in 1836. He rented a farm near Munford, where he died in 1892. He and his wife had twelve children, five of whom, with their mother, are still living. He was a Democrat and both himself and wife were members of the Baptist church. John Harris LESLEY acquired such an education as the common schools of Talladega County afforded and began life as a farmer. He continued in that occupation until 1893, when he engaged in railroading and in operating a sawmill. At present he is employed by John H. WILSON in a meat market at Munford, though he still owns a part of the old homestead, where he resides. He affiliated with the Democratic party until recently, but is now a Populist and an active member of the Farmers’ Alliance. In 1873 he was married to Sarah CLARK, a daughter of Matthew and Minerva (BEAN) CLARK, one of the pioneers of Calhoun County, Ala. Minerva BEAN came to Alabama in her childhood, with her father, James BEAN, who was one of the early settlers of Talladega County. Mr. And Mrs. LESLEY have been blessed with the following children: Ada May, Mastin Leonidas, Mary Daisy, Minnie Lula, Charles Emmett, deceased; James Theodore, John Oscar, William Clark, Anna Eola, Clifford Coleman, Ruby, and Samuel Troy.
