I too am searching the Letters family. My gggrandmother was Ella/Ellen Letters. She came to Canada from Ireland in 1907. Unlike her sisters she came to Southern Ontario Canada vs Brooklyn NY. I am unable to find out any further info on her.
I also found an Ellen Letters in the 1901 census. This was not my gggrandmother as she was much older. Could it be possible we are talking about the same person.

I have just found this message board. My husbands fathers name is Alexander Letters born 1908 in Toronto Ontario Canada. His mother's name was Ellen Letters. She was unwed when he was born & gave him up for adoption. He was 10 years old when adopted by a German family in the Ottawa Valley in Ontario. His adopted family left him with his original name. We are desperately trying to locate more information on his family history. If anyone has any info, it all helps.
Thanks

Hello

I too have limited infomation. Ellen Letters was my greatgrandmother. She was born in Antrim Ireland. I believe Ballemenia. She came to North America about 1906. On her marriage certificate it lists her parents as Daniel Letters and Mary Ann Boyle. She and 3 sisters emmigrated to the US. I still do not know how it was she came to Canada. In my searches I have found the names of the sisters. One sister Mary Letters who I believe was Ellens twin sister stayed in the US however was the sponsor for my great aunts baptism. I found a Maggie Letters on the Ellis Island web site. She came to the US in 1912. Her father is listed as Daniel Letters. She was going to stay with her brother in law Patrick Drain in Brooklyn. Daniel Letters her father address is listed as New Ferry, Toombridge, Ireland in 1912. I am also aware of a brother Daniel Letters born in 1879 in Portglenone Ireland. and a sister Margaret born in Portglenone in 1977. I have not verified either of these connections however my aunt remembers my grandmother having a brother Danny. I hope this is helpful and would appreciate any information that you may have. .

I have a great aunt and uncle from that small village from a later generation probably, but I can't connect them further back to your James Lawrence, b. 28Dec1834. My relatives are Charles Lawrence, b. 25Mar1880 and married to Annie Isabella Millican, b. 17Sep1880. If you can provide help, I would appreciate it.

Trying to find decendants of Patrick Letters (1811 -1867) & Catharine Loughrran. Both I believe were born in Scotland - Stirling. They had 9 children, Annie married Cormack, Patrich married Bannon and after her death Lyddy, Mary it appears from my records died unmarried, as did Louis (Lewis in birth records) and Charles. Louis and Charles went to America. Frederick was a Catholic priest, Catharine married Ryan, Agnes married Millar and Francis(my randfather). They were all born in Stirling Alloa and Aberdeen. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Letters, Later, etc.

My family has used the Later spelling but the 1861 census for Canada East, Township of Broughton, uses the Letters spelling for my gr-grandfather, Nathaniel Later and his family, and for his brother, Steward Later, and his family. The two brothers and Stewart's wife, Margaret, were born in Ireland and Nathaniel's wife, Elizabeth Armstrong, was born in Scotland. All of the children of these two families were born in Lower Canada and the parents and all of the children are listed as Anglicans. I know that Quebec Prov. was known as Lower Canada at one time and Canada East at this time, 1861. I believe that Nova Scotia had the same designation but I'm not sure. Our family history reads: Nathaniel Later was born in Donegal, Ireland, the third son of a family of nine children. His brothers were John, Alex, Steward, William, George, Thomas, and Peter. His one sister was Letetia. Due to the depression in Ireland, Stewart and Nathaniel came to Canada. Stewart and Margaret's oldest child in the 1861 census, James, was 20. This indicates that they arrived in Canada by 1841 and probably earlier. Nathaniel and Elizabeth's daughter, Mary Agnes was 4 and born about 1855. Her oldest sibling, Thomas, was 13, and was born about 1848. E. Broughton Township is South of Quebec City and in the vicinity of St. Jacque of Leeds.

There seems to be come confusion on the spelling of Letters, Later, Latter. I know this is too late for your Agnus, but given names run in families and there might be an earlier connection.
