I meant to ask you whether the book you mentioned was written by John Manson? I received a copy many years ago which I returned to the owner - but never actually connected with him. The book had a hard bound RED cover and was about a half-inch thick. It sounded like the one you mentioned.
Oh, well, we will be in touch again!
Mary

Mary I'm interested!! I have emailed you some info, I am researching my Husbands line, which is traced back to Caithness, william Manson and Janet Levack. I have a book, written by my husbands first cousin, of his genealogical journey through the US, Canada and Scotland. I would love to see what you have and share what I have with you. I am trying to get John's book into my Reunion Genealogy program but the book is a bit disjointed and I am having a hard time reading handwritten pedigree charts, by that I mean charts on plain white paper with no boxes or lines defining who goes with who! LOL Looking forward to hearing from you!

I to am researching Levach/Levak & Manson families who came from Scotland (Wick & surrounds) to Tasmania. David Manson was a convict & married Anne Levach (daughter of a convict). They lived many years in Tasmania, and all traces of Levach seem to be missing in Tas now. I have some information on this line, but whilst they may be connected way back, there is no direct link now, but I am curious, given they all came from the same general area.
Pls contact me if you wish to pursue.
thank You Diane

The Scottish version of the name

I have recently learnt from a Levack who lives in Northern Scotland, that the name there (also Levach) is thought to be a Maclea/Livingstone clan name peculiar to that region. -ack or -ach is a common name ending in that region, and the -lev comes from an old version of the Maclea name.

So I'd like to inform you about the DNA project which covers all related surnames of that clan:
http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Discussion%20Maclea.htm

This is not a commercial announcement. I am a Livingstone genealogist and the project is run by participants like myself. We already have one Levack (results not yet in).

Regards
Andrew Lancaster

I would think that Mr Manson would have fought with the British army against the French at Waterloo (1815). As DID wILLIAM mOWATT from Caithness who married Helen Levack on his return. They also emigrated to Canada. Their son Oliver was the 1st Prime Minister of Ontario. The town of Levack in Ontario is named after Helen. I wonder if they emigrated on the same boat as the Mansons?

Sorry to be so late!
I am from a long line of Alexander Levacks who go back to the 1700s in Caithness, North Scotland. Lack of census records end my line there.
I believe the name is connected to the Maclea(y)s. In the 1600s some Macleays assumed the name Livingstone. The Gaelic phonetic pronounciation is "Vachc-Lay". (Son of Lea.) In Caithness Levack is pronounced "Lay-Vac". I wonder if some Macleas didn't want to entirely give up their name when they left Argyleshire for the North East......for whatever reason. Certainly the name is closely linked with the Stewarts of Appin, the Macleays and the Livingstones.

My surname is Levack and it is an anglicized version of the French name Levesque. The change in the name occurred in Canada when one of my illiterate ancestors crossed the border to join the U.S. Army. The Army misspelled the name. If you don't have any connection to Canada, it is more likely you derive your name from Scotland as Levack is a Scotish name as well (and I have heard it may also be Polish).

I came across a George Levack in my research on the McKee family. He married an Annette McKee in 1921. His father was named Donald and his mother was Mary Spey. I looked for George and Annette in the 1930 Census but only found a George Levack married to Estelle living in Ossining. They had twins named Donald and Evelyn. I feel this is the same George. Perhaps Annette died or they divorced. He was only married to Estelle for 3 years. His parents were from Scotland. Could this be your grandfather? I would love to hear from you either way.

Levack Family

I had not heard of William Levack and his many children! I know that my grandfather, Harold Levack, came here from Scotland, so they are probably related. Harold had 14 children with a woman here in the states. Then, he ended up having two more children with another woman (after the first 14). One of those last two is my father. I did end up in touch with Mary Levack, one of Harold's first 14 children. She's a really neat woman and was able to tell me quite a bit about all of the family I have out there that I hadn't realized. Pretty fun stuff!

Levack Family

Hello, Erin! I decided to do some searching of the Levack family name and came across your message. I'm Angela Levack. Harold is my grandfather (the Harold who came here from Scotland - not his son Harold). Have you heard from any others in the family? Harold had 14 children with his wife, then lived in MI for a while and had two more sons, Doug and Peter. Doug is my dad. I recently saw my Uncle Peter and he's the one who told me to hop on line and do some searching around of the family name. How interesting!
