The family in the top row, second from the left, can also be found here, but a year or two earlier
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7383281/person/-392418517

I had originally identified this family as possibly that of Robert N. Levens, but based on the ages of the children it may be doubtful. I inherited this picture from Nora Levens, Claud's younger sister.

Do you have more pictures to post?

I inherited some personal items from my great-grandmother Claud Levens which includes a bunch of old photos. I don't know if anyone out there has any photos with the same faces or can possibly help identify them, but thought I'd post a few to see.

Archibald Levins/Levens, 1850-1895, Grey Co. Ontario, US, parents Armagh, N. ireland

I am looking for information on Archibald Levins, born to Irish immigrants in Grey Country, Ontario, Canada. I knew his daughter, Mary A. Levins, as a child and corresponded with her regularly -- she lived to be 100 and had a very interesting life. Two of her children are still living and of sound mind -- I would love to be able to provide them with more information.

Archibald's father was John Levins, born ~1814-1815 in Ireland, Died 1902 in Ontario. Married to Ann Eliza Speers (b ~ 1824 in Ireland), died 1897 in Ontario. Archibald, b ~ 1850 in Grey County, died 1895 in New York State. His parents Irish birth is confirmed on US census, his home in Grey country, from family history and photographs (attached), and an exhaustive search of ALL the Levins (& cognate names) households in 1851 & 1861 Ontario census show he is the ONLY Archibald, so this has to be the right family. Have a picture of Archibald and Ellen Keith Smith taken in Owen Sound in my possession, and posted to him on my Bates Barth family tree.

Older siblings of Archibald: George (~1842), Thomas (~1844), William (~1846).
(Source -- 1851 Census of Grey County, Sydenham.) Younger siblings not on census: Edward (1852), Sarah (1854), David (1856), Quinn (1856), Jacob (1858), Malinda (1860), Emily (1865), Charlotte (1869), Mary (1874) (source - family trees).

Someone has filled in a lot of information on this family, and I believe it may be in private trees put up by descendants of the Levins family. I would be most grateful for more information.

Archibald seems to have been married at least twice, and most likely 3 times. His marriage to Ellen Keith Smith, of New York, ended when she died of tuberculosis after 1882 and before 1889 when he remarried, to Margaret Mitchell, in Ontario. I believe he married Ellen Keith Smith in New York, but I do not have a marriage certificate. He seems to have an earlier marriage to a woman with the surname Little. It also seems that all 3 marriages produced children.

Archibald visited Mary Addie in New York several times, and he bought her a piano when she was 14. She was raised by her maternal grandmother, Caroline Baldwin, first in New York, and in Ohio. When Caroline died her children forced Mary to sell the piano to pay for her room and board. She soon married into the Barth family, and went west to California.

We would all be very grateful for more information on the Levins family. I live in Ontario and would be very interested in seeing grave sites, and learning more about this family.

Thanks,

Kim

My search of the 1911 Irish Census for the spelling of the name Levins revealed a number of people with that spelling of the name. My Irish Babington great great grandmother from Magheracloone, Co. Monaghan was born Mary Levens (?-Before 1864). In Griffith's Valuation in the townland of Knocknacran West in Magheracloone there were households of James and George Levens. I could not find death records for these two Levens in the Irish Civil Register Index at familysearch.org with the spelling of Levens but found their death records when I tried the spelling Levins. Not sure how James and George Levens/Levins were related to "my" Mary Babington nee Levens but they might have been siblings.

I just did a search for people with the Levens surname in the 1911 Irish census and amazingly my search of the census only revealed two people with the Levens surname. One Levens was in Co. Meath and the other was in Dublin.
I knew Levens was an uncommon surname in Ireland but just two people listed in the 1911 census is hard to believe. I think I need to look for other possible spellings of the Levens name in the 1911 Irish census.

Hi Lynwood, I've done a bit of research into the Levens family from Hertfordshire/Buckinghamshire/Warwickshire's as the family migrated from England in 1854 to Australia, aboard the Delganey from Liverpool.
I have traced the family back quite a few years, the first listing comes from the battle of Hastings in 1066 with King Harold of England, his stepson was Leavens/Levens, who was also shot in the eye.
This is mentioned on the Bayeaux Tapestry in France, at present I am living in England which will be handy furthering my search (I'm Australian), from 1066 I was able to trace it back to 869ad, through Denmark,Prussia,Poland,Romania and most recently staying with the Levens' families in Germany, and there is a direct continuance of lineage, you can see this in the faces of the children, but most of the info is in my computer at home.
Glenn Levens
