Levi's in Indiana and Kentucky

I am beginning to work on my family tree and am looking for researchers who have connections/information about Levi's living in Indiana and Kentucky. My Great Great Grandparents are as far back as I know - Frank Marion Levi 1867-1935 and Ellen Elizabeth Pryther 1868-1947. I believe they were born in Payneville, KY and they died and are buried in Alexandria, IN. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mark Aaron Levi

Am not related. May be of interest to someone who is. I have no further info but additional old newspaper extracts may be found at URL:

www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php

Vern D
/////////////////////////////////
Transcribed by Dee Sardoc
////////////////////////////////
Stockton Daily Independent
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
--------------------------------------------
>>SATURDAY, 2 MAY 1863<<

TERRIBLE ACCIDENT -- A dispatch from San Francisco to the ‘Union,’ April 30th, says:

The steamer Senator arrived tonight from the southern coast in charge of the 1st officer, BUTTERS. Capt. T.W. SEELEY was killed on the 27th instant by the bursting of the boiler of the little steamer Ida Hancock, on her trip down from New SAN Pedro to the anchorage of the Senator with passengers and freight. The steamer was a small propeller, owned by R. BANNING of San Pedro, and employed as a tug and in freighting between San Pedro and the ship anchorage. The boiler was new. There were some 50 passengers on board, and the loss of life is fearful. The boat was torn to pieces, and the explosion was heard on board the Senator. Boats were sent from the steamer, and the officers and soldiers at Camp Drum hastened to render assistance.

The following is the only list of killed and wounded procurable; it is not complete:
**Killed --
Capt. SEELEY
Wm. RITCHIE
W.T.B. SANFORD
Fred. KERLIN
H.M. OLIVER
R.M. HALL
Dr. H.R. MYLES
Thos. WORKMAN
L. SLESSINGER
M. LEVI
Richard PRICE
Chas. KINNEY
Joseph BRYANT
Sydney JOHNSTON [son of the late A. Sydney JOHNSTON]

Most of those reported dead were probably killed instantly. RITCHIE, Express Messenger, lived for 2 hours. A small portion of the Express matter was saved. There were some 25 killed in addition to the names reported.
-------------------------------------------------

SAD BEREAVEMENT -- In the recent explosion of the boiler of the steam-tug Ida Hancock, in the harbor of San Pedro, Mr. John SANFORD, one of the Board of Supervisors of this county, met with the loss of a brother whose name appears in the list of the killed. On board of the same steamer at the time of the accident, Mr. SANFORD had a mother, sister, brother-in-law and nephew, all of whom are reported among the wounded. They were all en route for this city and at the time of the explosion, were making the passage from the shore to the steamer Senator, which lay at anchor in the harbor. This is a sad bereavement and one which calls forth the sympathy of an entire community.

SAN FRANCISCO DISPATCH, May 1 --
-The funeral of Frederick COOK, Assistant Treasurer of the Overland Mail Co.; Captain SEELEY, of the Senator, and Frederick KERLIN, were largely attended today.
Fanny Levi/Levy b. 1859 (?NY or France), m. Gerson Netter 1880, d. ? Meridian MS 1920

Edward A. Schreiber, born 1858 ? in France, musician, Lived Meridian, MS, where he married Carolina KOHNER in 1881 (her second husband) & died 1898 (prob. in MS), buried Meridian Temple Beth Israel cemetery with infant children Louis, Gussie, ? Hugo. Son William Henry Schreiber (b. 1882, prob. Meridian, MS) became vaudevillian, married Caroline "Carrie" NETTER in Meridian, later raised my mother (a LATTANNER, Carrie's neice) during the 1920s-30s). Other son Frederick (b. 1885) was his partner, ended up in OK. Carrie NETTER had siblings Abe, Daniel Gerson, and Esther Lucile (my grandmother), all probably born in or near Mobile, AL 1881-1891 (Dan and Fanny were married there in 1880) but Daniel and Carrie, at least, later moved to Meridian, MS. Their parents were Gerson NETTER (probably b. 1850 Alsace Lorraine) and Fanny LEVI/LEVY (b. 1859 NY or France). Info on any of these families would be much appreciated, and I'm happy to share.
Henri Levi(Ivel) and Rose Nathan

Hi, I am looking for information on Henri(Henry) and his wife Rose Nathan(MN)... my Grandmother Myrtle Marie was born in Brooklyn(1906) and came to Australia with her uncle(a Judge Levi), she changed her name to Ivel, as well as her fathers surname(from Levi to Ivel)... no idea why. I think Henri and Rose would have been born about 1870-1885... they are supposed to have been of Austrian Jewish origins, not sure if it was their generation or the one before? The only Rose and Henri I can find have been on a census(1901?) in England under the name of Nathan(probably not them then)... not sure if there were other children, and I have checked the Ellis Island records but have found nothing on any of them... maybe they didn't want to be found back then, but it is proving extremely frustrating with such a brick wall now. If anyone has any info or ideas on this please let me know.

Adele

Friends found by investigators said that she had at one time been married to a James Levi and that he was buried in Otway, OH..in Scioto County. If anyone could help me with this family I would greatly appreciate it

Vickie

I have found some newspapers dated from November 3, 2005, with death notices. If you would like for me to see if this Levi, Jean Grandy is your family. E-mail me at legatodolphin@aol.com. And I'll help get you a copy of it. But please give me some time, I am doing this myself. So it may take a day or two. Thanks Eva

Kentucky (Louisville?) Portsmouth, OH

I now have more information
on the LEVI/STERN or STARR family.

Hindle or Hannah STERN (April 7 1825 Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse, Hesse,
Germany -1891)
married
? LEVI possibly in Louisville, Kentucky. The mystery LEVI was born in France and was
either dead or not present by 1880.

Children

Charles (circa 1851 Kentucky (Louisville?) -?) Liquor store retailer

Isaac (circa 1861 Ohio (Portsmouth?) - ?)
Travelling Salesman

Samuel (circa 1862 Ohio (Portsmouth?)-?)
Shoe factory worker

Bertha (circa 1864 Ohio (Portsmouth?)-?)

Nellie (circa 1866 Ohio (Portsmouth?)-?) 1880
age 14 was living at Columbus Asylum

Emanuel (Mannie) (circa 1879 Ohio (Portsmouth?)-? Zanesville, Ohio)
married Beulah. Ran a store with his cousin Abram E STARR.

According to the 1880 Scioto County census (Portsmouth, Ohio is in Scioto County), a niece aged 26 Eva F STIR was living in
the house. She would therefore have been born around 1856).

The name STIR may be a misspelling for STERN or STARR.

It is possible that she was a daughter of Moses (October 31 1850-?) or Abraham STERN (July 5 1853-?) or STARR who emigrated
from Heppenheim, Hesse and went to stay with their Aunt Hannah LEVI.

Please contact me if this rings a bell.

Alice
UK
Genalicej@aol.com

She had a son Tom b. 1887.

This was probably around the Scottsville are. I found a similar Amanda Levi b. 1865, daughter of Robert P. Levi b 1825, (1880 Barren Co. Census) but I'm not sure if this is the right Amanda. Any suggestions?
John Levi & Martha Judd in KY

I was able to find my great-great-great grandparents names on my uncle Elias' death certificate, taking me back another generation.

John T. Levi b. 1842 bp. KY d. [between 1883-1895] dp. KY, married Martha Judd 1882 in Payneville, Meade County, KY.

Martha S. Judd b. 1852 bp. KY d. [after 1895] dp. KY?, married John T. Levi 1882, remarried in 1895 to John A. Robinson in Payneville, Meade County, KY.

I have located John T. Levi in the 1880 Census living in Payneville, Meade, KY. He is single and living with his brother Walter Levi and three black servants, and a 2 year old black baby.

I have not been able to locate Martha Judd in 1880. I've tried both FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com, but no luck. Would you mind looking through your records for these names?

My great-great grandfather, Frank M. Levi, was born in approx. 1871, but I don't find him in the 1880 census either! What to do? I am thinking that Frank M. was the illegitimate son of John Levi and Martha Judd, who later married in 1882. Frank M. (or Francis M.) was born in Illinois (last name could be Levi or Judd). All that I can think is that when they found out that Martha was pregnant, her family sent her away to Illinois to live with relatives there until the baby was born, but then they disappear in 1880. I found Martha in the 1870 census, living at home with her mother in Payneville, Meade, KY.

Any help would be appreciated,
Mark Levi

Henry Levi of North Carolina

Searching for information on this person. I found him mentioned in the federal census for Pitt County North Carolina in the 1800's. Two of his children might have been brothers James and William one of his daughters might have been my ggg grandmother Mary Polly Levi. I need to find out more on Henry, like where he came from before Pitt County. I think it was some where in North Carolina. I would also like to know the name of all his children it appears in the 1800 census he had 3 boys (one of these might have been a brother) and at least 2 females under age 10. I need to find the name of his wife and where Henry might have been born.

Thanks Anna Hutton-Page
You may be right about us being related. It is said that James
Allison Levi came from the Carolinas (North I think) went to TN and had a bunch of kids. One of his sons Parker Milton Levy came to TX @ 14 and changed the spelling of the name.
Married the daughter of a wealthy land owner in Williamson Co. because Bell and Milam had not been formed from Williamson yet. James Allison came to TX and settled in Washington Co. and died there.Parker Milton 1st wife died early, he remarried soon afterward and they had a large family.
One of the second family son's was my great grandfather James Parker Levy who married Olivia (Ollie) Cross their first born in 1888 was my grandfather Claude, when he married Beulah Lee Lusk they had two children C.W. Jr. (pete) and Dorothy.
Dorothy is my mother who died 1-8-2000.

Annie Levi Marriage to Alex Baker

I have recently obtained a Marriage Record for Annie Levi to Alex Baker. Alex Baker is the son of Joseph Baker of Russia, Annie Levi is the daughter of Jeohiel Levi of Russia. They were married in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1915. I ordered this record thinking it was an Annie Levi related to my Levi's, but it is not connected in any way to my descendants. If anyone is interested they may have this copy by sending me a snail mail address.Marilyn

I'm still trying to find the connection of the parents of Henry LEVI, married to Nancy SMITH, 7-28-1837, Switzerland Co.,IN. I have their sons, Henry born 8-12-1839 and Thomas born 5-1837. 1850 census shows both boys with a SMITH family, (assuming maternal g-mother). I have alot of upline from Henry and lots of downline, I just can't find out what happened to him and his wife Nancy, or who his father was.

Talofa(hello) everyone,

Would anyone be able to tell me how a Jewish surname arrived on the islands of Samoa. My grandfather (comes from a line of Levi(s)but were not how long the line is and where it starts) was Iona Vaipouli Levi, a prominant Pastor of the London Missionary Society Church. The family is very large with some living in Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia but majority of the Levi's live in Samoa. Please, i'm really really really hoping to find out the story as to how the Levi name arrived in Samoa...noone seems to know or remember and those that do have passed on (GOD BLESS THEM).

Thank you - Tofa(farewell)
It is quite old, perhaps turn of the century 1900 +/- 20 years. She is wearing a lovely white dress and shiny black shoes. She has very dark curly hair with a big white bow. If you are interested in obtaining a scan of this photograph please contact me directly via email.

I am seeking information regarding George NEWLAND (and his wife Sarah LEVY), who is believed to have been known as George LEVI, prior to migrating to South Australia in 1850 with his daughter, Eliza, and wife, Sarah (formerly, LEVY). [Sarah later married John PATMORE, in Adelaide, South Australia, and had a further child, named Esau PATMORE, in 1857. Esau was later known as George MOUR.]

The couple had a daughter, Eliza NEWLAND, born 20 Dec 1845, in Ugley, Essex, England (she married George Albert CHOULES, 29 February 1864, in Adelaide, South Australia, and died there in 23 Apr 1938).

They are believed to have had another daughter in 1838, born in Wiltshire, England.

I have Eliza’s marriage and descendants reasonably well researched (see, http://members.ozemail.com.au/~montanet/Index.htm , though this needs updating). However, I am unable to proceed further back. Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
This article was published in the Houston Chronicle, Houston, Texas on Sunday 18 Feb 2001.

Infant dies in car-truck collision

A 2-month-old girl died when the car in which she was riding collided with an 18-wheeler Friday night in east Harris County.

Zhakijha Levi was dead at the scene of the 9 p.m. crash in the westbound lanes of the 7600 block of Interstate 10 East, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators said the child's mother, Malakai Brown, came up behind the truck too fast in her Chevrolet Impala. As she attempted to go around the truck, she smashed the car into the center concrete freeway barrier and bounced into the truck.

Brown's car flipped over, throwing a car seat containing the child from the vehicle. Once the baby seat hit the road, the child came out of it and struck the road, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Brown's condition was not available Saturday.

I am looking for information on Lida Levi born in August 1880 in Arkansas. I am also looking for information on her father Charles Levi born in Memphis Tenn in 1850. Was there a particular concentration of "Levi's" in Arkansa in the late 1800's?

Griselda Levi married John Phillips and had 11 children. The two I know of are Griselda b Dec. 18, 1748 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. She married in Quebec City in 1768 to John Moore, a sea merchant. Phillipsburg, Westchester, NY is named for her husband, John. She had a brother named Thomas.
I have been searching for the wrong Levi. I just found out the man I'm looking for is William Scott Levi who died in 1904. The woman he married was not Nelliz Kunzman, but Artimisha Ellen Piatt. Do you know if there was anything unusual about Scott Levi's death?

Jewish name of Henry Lewis

My grandfather emigrated from Poland to New Zealand via England in the mid 19th century. As was their want for immigrants in those days he changed his name to a more British sounding name but I can't find a record of his original name. He returned to England and married a nice Jewish girl by the name of Fanny Davis and brought her out to NZ together with her parents and sister. Maybe the name was changed from Levi or some such and maybe he had some siblings who migrated elsewhere. I can provide precise dates if anyone has a clue.
