Bernard Levine

My Greatgrandfather was Bernard Levine from Vilna. I don't know his wife's name. I am told there were abt seven children. One child was Ellis Albert Levine who left Vilna at a young age to come to America. He became a citizen in Massachusetts abt 1898. It is told that he brought many of his brothers and sisters from Vilna to USA. Their names I do not know. I know he brought my Grandmother, Fanny (Whittenberg)Levine from Birmingham, England to San Francisco abt. 1913, to marry. He was a tailor, and passed away in 1942. My Mother, Ruth (Levine)Zugman Lacy told me her Greatgrandfather was a cantor in Russia. Could this be Bernard? My Uncle Bernard Levine was named after him.

I cannot view your tree... do you have a link to it? My great grandfather Isaac Levine came in the mid 1880's from just outside Vilna. We don't know much about his family though. They didn't speak much English, and I'm afraid on their marriage license in NY they didn't answer the questions correctly. I cannot find the ships he and my great grandmother were travelling on (separately) either. I do know where they lived in New York, though. Not Massachusetts.

I have been told Ellis brought many brothers and sisters out of Vilna in the 1800's. He brought my Grandmother Fannie Wittenberg to America from England to start a family. I hope we can make a discovery!

It was customary to carve the father's Hebrew name as well as the Hebrew deathdates which can be translated via any Hebrew to civil date converter on the internet. It was often the custom from that period to omit the birthdate, but you sometimes can get that from the Census data.
You know on my father's side, we found the headstones of our great grandparents in a New York Cemetery. They were engraved at the top, in Hebrew, with their father's name which provided enormous help. It appears to have been the custom. This was in the late 1800's to the 1920's. I had not thought about that for my other great grandfather, but your mention of the headstone has given me pause!

I don't yet know if Moshe had any siblings and I'm having the same tough going as you are. I don't have anything yet about the family there but I'm preparing a JewishGen family finder database post as we speak. I believe you are correct about the Levine interconnections.

I will give you the next generation of Moshe's descendants:

Esther LEVINE (1870-c.1930) married Solomon MILLER (1868- c.1930)

Zlata LEVINE (1870-1941) married her first cousin Samuel David CAPLAN (1870-1911). These were my great-grandparents.

Benjamin (formerly LEVINE) BERLIN (1872-1941) married Sarah CAPLAN (1876-unknown).

Bertha "Baile" LEVINE (1875-1960) married David GAMZUE (1869-1944).

The only written documentation I have is a 1958 foolscap prepared by a relative who died a number of years ago. I have photographed a number of the gravestones into which the name of R' Israel Moshe was carved in Hebrew. Nothing yet from across the pond. Another cousin, with whom I have collaborated on another of my families, is considering subscribing to some of the new paid stuff in the LitvakSIG domain of JewishGen. We shall see.

Do you know if Moshe had any siblings? I have been unable to trace any other Levine sibling. Just my great grandfather. Even knowing where he came from, I have unable to connect him to others. I have had no luck with JewishGen at all. Ancestry has provided a great deal of information, and, surprisingly, google itself has a wealth of information. But Levine is a tough one. I don't believe it's as common as I once thought, and I do believe the Levines in the Vilna area were all connected in some way. Anything you have about the family there is appreciated. I have only the names from my Great Grandfather's marriage certificate.

My 2nd-great-grandfather, Rabbi Israel Moshe LEVINE was the last of a line of 52 rabbis in Vilna. Moshe lived from about 1820 to about 1880. Somewhere back in the ancestry, the Levines studied with the Vilna Gaon. The surviving photograph of Moshe Levine portrays him with a certain style of skullcap (kipah) and sidecurls (payehs) seen only on high Levites according to a rabbi who visited one of my Russian-born great-uncles and happened to see that photograph on the wall.

Moshe married Rachael CAPLAN. Neither immigrated to the USA. Their 5 children, all of whom immigrated to the USA between 1892 and 1906, included 2 boys and 3 girls. Of the two boys, one had no issue, and the other changed his surname to BERLIN.

Most of the LEVINE and CAPLAN emigres settled in Holyoke, Hampden county, Massachusetts. I have extensive documentation of their descendants, and would like to have more documentation on my ancestors in Vilna. As a patron of JewishGen, I have not been successful thus far in tracing them.

"Russia Poland" or "Poland Russia" was the way many of the 1890 through 1930 Census records referred to this area.

Anne's mother was Jennie Kirsner Karp, whose sister was Lena Kirsner Levine.

I know this is a reply to an old message but hope it goes through anyway!

Martha Lasser

Benjamin or Irene LEVINE, Boston

Trying to track down a missing relative. Common ancestor is Benjamin Levine, b 1919 in Boston, parents Samuel & Rebecca. We think he was married prior to our ancestral marriage, and I've found his AJHS WWII Jewish Servicemen Card which indicates his wife in 1946 was named Irene. It's the same Army serial number so I'm pretty sure it's the right guy.

So now we'd like to find Irene, who was married to Benjamin Levine in 1946 but didn't stay that way. Or we'd like to find any children of that marriage. We think there may have been one daughter, who would have been born sometime between 1941 (when Benjamin enlisted and was single) and 1947 (when he married his new wife).

Yes, I just re-read the post that stated you were working on a book about the Levine's. How I missed that is truly an error on my part. Have you completed this book. IF so, would you please tell me how I may be able to purchase a copy of this for my son's and their children? You can reach me directly at lagranny50@cox.net. If you would like to text me you can reach me at 337-255-4379. I suggest texting as I do not answer phone calls on my cell from numbers I am not familiar with. Am anxiously awaiting your reply.

Sincerely,
Deena J.
I am sooo very sorry that it has taken me so long to respond to this message board. I honestly haven't been doing any genealogy as of late. This is my 5 son's family line on their father's side and they honestly haven't shown any interest until last night. Every time I would mention researching this they would say,"That's you mama." Well, now my oldest son has decided he wants some answers.

No, I have no photos of anyone on this lineage. I am going to try my best to contact one of my Ex's sister's and see if she has any photos of their maternal family. If I do acquire any of these photos I will definitely let you know.

Can you PLEASE forward me the newly found info? My personal E-Mail address is lagranny50@cox.net. I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
Deena Broussard

My great grandmother, Florence Levine, came to the US around 1809. She married Joseph Hock, whose name was changed to Glass, and they lived in NY the rest of their lives. Their daughter, my grandmother, always told how her mother came from a longstanding line of rabbis in Vilna Poland. Wonder if there is a connection.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to get the birth certificate. It could possibly have his parents names and lead you to a lot of information. My grandmother's wedding certificate was $1.00. Sometimes this information costs $10-15.00. My grandfather's real name was not Levine and numerous people took the name Levine and I heard it was because of the tribe of Levite.

The last possible thing I could do is try and order a copy of my grandpa's birth certificate, and I truly don't want to do that!! I love genealogy and hope to find it this way. England? I have one Levine cousin there.

Dear Chelseavalon,

I reply, purely due to the name. I am having trouble tracing my Levine family in USA.

Due to our similar problem you never know we could find more similarities?

I have a gggAunt, Leah Levine born in London, UK. She married a guy named Simon Hirshfield in 1862 and emigrated to USA. I have been able to trace her children, but not any further really.
I know they were mainly registered in the New York area. During my searvh in the US records I think I found some off spring in the MA, district but as I am unable to say, 'yes deffinately this one is one of our's'. I have been slow in making a finite decision. As you mention MA, in your post, well, you never know?

Do you nay any more clue's?
This is possibly, a branch we could work on together as we have the same aim. As I said you never know, stranger things have happened to find out that someone you are working with you are actually connected to?

My email address is btsnooks@ntlworld.com. I am in London, UK. and am totally stuck on the Levine side of the tree.

Take care

Kind Regards

Belinda

Levine Family - Poland/Russian Immigrants

So, here is the information I have.

Joe Levine, born in 1888 in Poland, came to America and eventually settled in Minnesota by the age of 42. His wife was Goldie Levine and they had at least one son named Gerald Yale Levine. Gerald Yale Levine and Joanne Luree Thompson had three children together, my father being one of them and his name was Joel Eric Levine.

As far as I know, Goldie's maiden name was Herman. Her sister is now Shirley Goldberg, and was married to Hymie Goldberg. Shirley was born around 1918.

If any of this sounds familiar to you or you have information I'd love to hear it!

Sylvia Levine, age 85, of Madison/Green Bay,daughter of,Samuel and Esther (Berman) Cohen.

Sylvia Levine
Sylvia Levine, age 85, of Madison/Green Bay, passed away on January 10,
2000. She was born in Marinette on April 24, 1914, the youngest of six children
of Samuel and Esther (Berman) Cohen. In 1940 she married Meyer Levine of
Oconto Falls. They resided in Green Bay for 45 years, before moving to
Madison. Sylvia lived her life for her children, and any other children who crossed
her path. She knew all the important things a mother has to know. She could sew,
knit, and darn. She knew how to repair the broken laces on a football and sew a
sponge into the padding of a worn baseball mitt. Sylvia made the best baked
chicken, and she brought us 7-Up and chipped ice when we were sick. She was
a nursery school teacher, a Sunday School teacher, a Cub Scout den mother, and
she worked outside the home so her children could attend college. She
weathered the many storms that life presented by singing. She loved to sing,
especially while washing dishes at the kitchen sink. Her favorite song was, You
Are My Sunshine. Sylvia is survived by two children, Marcia Levine of Boynton
Beach, Florida, and Steven Levine of Middleton. She was preceded in death by
her husband of 49 years, Meyer; and two infant sons, Jerold and Stewart Levine.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2000, at
Fitch Lawrence Sanfillippo Cress Funeral Home, 6201 University Avenue,
Madison, with Rabbi Kenneth Katz officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill
Cemetery, Madison.
We will love you and remember you always. Bortz and Mouse. You are my
sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You'll
never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine
away. Fitch Lawrence Sanfillippo Cress Funeral and Cremation Service,

My grandmother Helen Levin was born in Waterbury, CT and had a brother named Jacob (she called Jakie). She is now deceased. Her father was Philp Levin and her mother, Rebecca. Does that sound correct????

I see this is from 7 years ago! I just joined.

Charles W. Levine-b. NY, 1898

I am trying to find more about Charles W. Levine, born in NY in 1898. He was the son of Charles Levine and Laura Ida Elizabeth Booth. The parents were on the vaudeville circuit in the late 1800s. Ida remarried and Charles was in his step-father's house in 1910 in Philadelphia. The step-father was Lewis Howard. All three members of the family, including 12-year-old Charles, were listed as theatrical performers in the 1910. Thanks.
