Hi there
I am researching on behalf of my mother-in-law, Alma Lockhart (nee Levey/Levy)in Perth Western Australia. I am hoping you still are contactable, as your post was quite a while ago.
Alma's father was Abraham/Alfred Levey/Levy (son of Philip Levey born in Poland/Russia)born ca1880 caught a boat to America in 1910,worked learning the trade of cigar rolling, and then travelled to Melbourne, Australia where he worked in cigar trade, and married. The family moved to Perth, Western Australia where the remainder of children were born.
I have more specific dates for each of these things, but can't access them right now. Hope some of this rings a bell with you though.
I am also trying to find out about where Philip Levey/Levy was born specifically - so any info on that would be appreciated. Would also love to know about the two convicts, as we have one on the other side of the family as well..
All for now,
Virginia

Re: LEVY Charles b abt 1780 m Eliz. Weston 1805 @ Shalbourne,Berks/Wilts

I purchased the transcription of the Shalbourne baptisms and deaths made by the Wiltshire FHS. It is in such a muddle that the parish records have recorded this family. Charles Levy was baptised Charles Laver to William Laver and Mary Waters. William is shown as William Lever in the marriage registration in 1772. Sister Hannah (1774) was also baptised Laver. Sisters Elizabeth (1777) and Martha (1779) were baptised Leaver. Sister Jeney (1786) was baptised Leaver, but alongside it states "Leavey REG". Brother John (1790) was baptised Leave. Charles burial in 1823 is recorded as Levi. A Mary Levy was buried in 1810 and a William Levy in 1829. If they prove to be the parents, then perhaps the family decided to wipe the slate clean and started again! Can anyone help untangle this conundrum?

I was curious if you have had any luck since posting this. I don't have any useful help for you although there are some interesting coincidences to my LEVY ancestry.

My great-grandfather Asher LEVY (orig. POSMONTIER or similar) b. ca 1850, immigrated NYC area 1873 from Poland (we believe), lived Paterson, NJ a few years, where my grandfather Louis was born, before moving to Philadelphia where Asher's 2 youngest sons David and Charles were born, as was my father Charles and I. David married Anna POLLACK who was originally from Baltimore.

Also, my probable cousin Herbert LEVY (b. NYC 1927)'s father was Abraham Moses LEVY (b. Phila. ca 1885) and his father was Chaim Leib (Hyman)LEVY (b. Poland ca 1858).

It's still possible. It could be that my grandmother came from Odessa but my grandfather from somewhere else. He had met someone on the boat over here that had a sister. The sister was my grandmother. Her maiden name was Sendar. The family history supposedly said that somewhere way back the family moved to France to escape conscription into the Russian Army and the name was changes. So far, all over the world the only names spelled our way have been related somewhere in history. If Harry had no brothers maybe there is a cousin that was on another branch. If you ever find any connection, please let me know. I'm not really that great on Ancestry.com, and can't figure out how to override my FamilyTree entries.
Harry Dulfon was my step-grandfather (married my Grandmother Inez Levy Blumm after her divorce). He had quite a few sisters but no brothers. His father was Saul Dulfon. Also, while I thought he came from Odessa, I learned subsequently that he came from another city. So I think in this case there is no obvious relation.

Okay.Perhaps the administrator moved it. here is the original text of the message:
My great-grandfather was Frank Levy (b.1883 in Chicago, Illinois) who change his last name to Lave around 1910 shortly after my grandfather Edward was born. Frank was originally married to Beatrix Novodvorsky, but they either divorced or she died after child birth. He had 4 sisters, Mary Levy, Anna Levy, Barbara Levy and Katherine Levy. He also had at least one brother James Levy who also changed his last name to Lave around the same time. I don't know why. It appears that Frank is the youngest. They lived in the Czech neighborhood in Chicago near Archer Avenue. I have an old photo of Frank and his siblings and his parents from around 1900.

I'd like to find out Frank's parent's names and any information about his sisters. I believe that I have found his brother James' entire family line. I would also like to find any information about my great-grandmother Beatrix Novodvorsky. Any help would be great since without his parent's names I can't go any further.

How did you come to post your query here on the GERMANY message board? You make no mention at all of Germany. You mention only Chicago, Ilinois, over in the United States. Did this family have some kind of a connection to the country of Germany?
It would be nice to think we are all related as one clan. The name is biblical. The name means joining and I believe to serve. My father was Norbert Levy. When he came to this country on a student visa, he kept the name Levy until the 1940's. Then he decide to change his last name legally to Delville due to the war and Hitler. Problem I have is now on ancestry I have to provide 2 last names for him so people can look for him if need be with the legal surname and his birth surname. Is that confusing for people who search. Will they get it?

LEVY Robert Irving - b. Columbus, Ohio

Robert Irving Levy. On Sunday, May 30, 2011 Robert Irving Levy left this life.

Bob was born in Columbus, Ohio during the Depression.

The son of a Vaudevillian couple, David and Florence Carney Levy, and brother to Jeanette, Jane and David Jr., all deceased.
From his humble beginning at the age of 16, under the stage name of Bob Roberts and with a good sense of timing for comedy and an ear for music, he had the ability to make light some of the harshest obstacles.
He forged on to the stage, making mild successes early on but reviews slowly started getting better and so did the gigs, clothes, stage presence and name recognition. He was performing with the Who's Who of his time.
In 1954 while serving as the Entertainment Officer for the US Army in Nuremberg, Germany, Bob met his future wife, Margaret Baltes, an Army Special Services Director in Europe. They were married in 1955 in Zurich, Switzerland. The couple traveled throughout Europe, entertaining troops before settling in the US.
Bob continued entertaining in Las Vegas, NYC, Miami and many other large and small cities in the US and Canada. He crossed the Atlantic 13 times doing shows on the major cruise lines. Margaret, also a singer and entertainer, with a certain amount of wit and humor, complemented him both on-and-off stage.

The couple retired to Florida in 1985 where Bob continued entertaining, both professionally and providing charitable shows for many causes.

He leaves to celebrate his life, his beloved and devoted wife, Margaret.
Please join Margaret at a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Gulf Coast Village Retirement Community, 1333 Santa Barbara Blvd., Cape Coral, FL 33991. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to benefit the animals Bob so loved. His wishes were to be cremated and his ashes strewn over the water.

Published in The Columbus Dispatch on June 22, 2011

I saw on a list somewhere Harry had relatives Isadore and Joseph, both of whom I know to be Benjamin's brothers. If this is the correct person, any info on the family history would be appreciated.
Your family possibly got that name from Chapman Levy (google him). He was a prominent politician from Camden, who ran a brickyard in Columbia that used slave labor. He moved to Mississippi by the mid 1830's though. Many slaves took the name of their first master.

I don't know how true that story is (that many Jews were given choice of Levy or Cohen) but it is plausible that that is how my "clan" became Levy. My g-g-father was Asher Levy who came to US around 1883 but one of his sons (a brother of my grandfather) changed his name "back" to Posmontier since he apparently thought it was originally something like that.

Thank you for your reply... It looks like this is not a connection either. Too bad because I was hoping it would be. Our Altman information is as follows:
Lena born abt. 1866 Austria
Simon (Lena's father) born abt. 1840 Austria
Israel Wolf (Simon's father) born ? in Austria

Annie Gertie married into the Altman family (Israel's wife)... also born in Austria
Yes, I have some more Altman information. Altman is on my maternal side while Levy is on my paternal side and there are no known relatives (although both surnames are relatively common). Shlom-Itzak Altman was married to Sarah Yagerman whose mother was Maltze (Miriam) Kauderer, Kauderer being my mother's maiden name. The Altman offspring were William, Anna, Bertha, Jean, Sophie, and Miriam (the latter 2 born in the Boston area in 1911 and 1917 respectively. I have no further Altman info. Bernie

I don't think that there is a connection to Abraham (I am a cousin to James, who originally posted this thread). However, there is a possible connection on the ALTMAN side of things. I would love to find out more information if you are still on here...

Our G-G- Grandmother is Lena Altman Levy, whose father is Simon Altman, whose father is Israel Wolf Altman and mother is Annie Gertie (or possibly Gersten).
I have a probable connection to Maurice Levy in Denver. My G-Grandmother had a cousin who was a Dr. Maurice Levy at the Jewish TB Hospital in Denver, CO in the 20's (at least). My G-G-Grandfather was Abraham Levy (born around 1861) and may have been Israel's brother? Abraham immigrated to the US (from England) with at least four brothers and a sister... there may have been more. After that, the details get foggy... I hope that you are still looking for this information (and are still on here)... I would love to find out more info...

In case you are still interested... No, not all Levy's are related. At least one support would be the fact that upon arriving at Ellis Island, many Jews were given the choice of "Levy" or "Cohen" for a last name (most likely due to the unusual names of some Jewish families). This was the case in my family, and they chose Levy.
