Hi Judith,

I never thought anybody would reply so thanks for doing so, it's really appreciated.

I have a few updates to my original question!

I am now not sure if Harold was a catholic, (It's more than likely that he got the boot due to Caroline becoming pregnant before marriage).

Also there is a rumour of Harold’s day job was as a green grocer?

I have tried lots of spellings and other varients of harold and his details to no avail.

I think this is one of those stories that was never 'Discussed' back then.

Yours hoping!

Andy
I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Carl Ley”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Cambridge (Guernsey Co.) OH, and he looks to be in his 30s.

I found Charles in the 1920 census for Cambridge, OH, showing him as age 52, widowed, and he lived with daughter Lizzie Stout (31) and son in law Frank Stout (36). One WorldTree posting shows that he was married to Sarah Eliza Vance in abt 1887, and that Sarah died in Guernsey Co. in 1895. He and his children “B. Lizzie”, born Aug 1888, and Carl, born Jul 1891, listed with last name “Lye”, lived in 1900 in Guernsey Co. with his deceased wife’s parents, Thomas & Christina Vance. By 1910, he was living with his daughter, Elisabeth and her husband Frank in Cambridge.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Carl Ley.

Harold Ley of North Devon

Hello there,

I am looking for my G-grandfather Harold Ley of North Devon.(Not sure if thats his full name)

All I know is that he came from a middle class family in the north Devon (Barnstaple, Bideford, and Braunton) area. He played lead Violin at the Imperial Hotel or so the family story goes!

He was engaged to my G-grandmother Caroline Eliza Youings (B.1887) of Barnstaple but this was broken off when an elder Youings found out that his faith was Catholic! But by then it was too late as Caroline was expecting My Gran Olive (B. 1907) He was taken to court for maitenance at a later date and that is all I know.

Also found that the LEYs and the Youings families were quite pally (same masonic group?) as I know that some of the Youings belonged to the local branch

Whether or not you can help.
Please let me know it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Andy

Charles Ley of Stephenson County, IL

A History of the Winneshiek Church

The Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Freeport Mission, Rock River
Conference, met in the Silver Spring Schoolhouse on May 1857, forming a class which
was called the Silver Spring class consisting of seventeen members. The Reverend
James Johnson was the minister in charge. Mr. Elijah O'Daniel was the class leader.
This class worshiped in the Silver Spring Schoolhouse and later in the Winneshiek
Schoolhouse. Through the mischievous young men destroying the school books, this
class had to discontinue its worship in the Schoolhouse.

Mr. Squire William Mitchell, who was one of the school directors living across the road
from the schoolhouse at that time, told the class he would give the land if they wanted
to build a church. So under the supervision of Mr. J. L. Thoman assisted by Mr. Phillip
Fawver, Sr. and other carpenters, the church was built in the year 1877, and
dedicated to the Lord July 1,1877, for his service with the Reverend James Johnson
presiding at the dedication. The Reverend B. J. Murray was the preacher in charge.
The opening sermon was by the Reverend A. F. Loomis and the main speaker was the
Reverend Bishop M. Wright. The Reverend F. Riebel preached in German. "Jesus
Paid It All" was one of the first songs sung and Miss Laura Mitchell (Mrs. Charles Ley)
was the first organist

I think that we have common ancestry here. George Lee and Jemima Lyne Hall were my g-g-g-grandparents.

Jemima was baptised in Mylor, Cornwall on 01 January 1797. Her parents were Francis Hall (a sailor) and Anne Bamfield. The couple were married in Helston on 03 September 1782.

Jemima married George Lee (or Ley), a fisherman or waterman, in Mylor on 01 September 1817. George died in 1832 and Jemima re-married Llewellyn Bynon from Llanelli, South Wales on 28 Mar 1836 in Mylor.

She had at least three children with George:

(1)	Anne Banfield Lee, who was baptised in Flushing, Mylor on 24 April 1818. She married Edward Joseph Maddock (an Irish sailor) on 02 March 1837 in Mylor, and went to live in Ireland.
(2) George Lee, who was baptised on 19 July 1820 in Flushing
(3)	Cordelia Hall Lee who was baptised in Mylor on 20 June 1826. She married Benjamin Palmer in St Gluvias (Penryn) on 06 December 1847. Her husband died about 1853 and she re-married James Rowe in St Gluvias on 24 May 1855.

Cordelia had three children with Benjamin, one of whom was my g-grandfather Benjamin Palmer. After his father’s death my g-grandfather went to live with his aunt, Anne Maddock, and her husband in Ireland. He died in Dublin in 1936. Cordelia may have died in 1897.

Can you let me know if this is familiar to you? I’d be very interested in any additional information, particularly about George Lee.

Best wishes

Ben

my fledgling website:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~palmerfami...
Mrs Margaret( BARHAM?) LEY,w/3 children, 1616, prob. near Kent

Trying to follow up a VERY specific will reference. Thomas BARHAM of Teston, Kent (nr Maidstone)d. early 1617. His will references his "cosin Mrs. Margaret Ley and her three children" as recipients of a large bequest. The BARHAM family were prominent in E. Sussex and Kent during the pre-Tudor, Tudor, Jacobean, and early Restoration periods. I know nothing of the LEY family lines. Thomas BARHAM only mentions Margaret's name, and not a location, so I'm guessing it's either London, Kent, or perhaps Surrey. It's also a good guess that her maiden name was BARHAM, and may have been either a first cousin, niece, or an extended (but close) cousin. Sorry to be vague, but it's what I have to work with. Likewise, Margaret LEY may or may not have been widowed, and merely a close relation to Thomas BARHAM worthy of her bequest. A PROBABLE lifespan for Margaret might be 1570-1630; again, a guess.

Hi David. Thanks for responding and for your help. I haven't used Genesreunited, but have just registered (although I am not yet sure exactly what access that gives me). I have managed to trace Edward Ley to his wife, Margaret Wallace, and parents Morish Ley and Sarah Jourdain, but no further. I am also missing a few details from earlier generations, and so if I was able to get access to your tree, that would be most appreciated.
Thanks again.

Nick

Re: Lost Leys! Devon and Cornwall

Just a little more information. I have managed to find my initial Thomas Albert LEY's family in Swansea, thanks to an entry for a sibling called Leyson. I remember my Granny mentioning a Leyshan (how she pronounced it) and that when she was courting with my Gramps they would visit relatives in Swansea.

Thomas Albert Ley's father was Thomas/Evan LEY and was born in Heydon, Swansea in 1865 along with a brother called Edward LEY born 1860. It looks like Evan took his middle name as on Thomas Albert LEY's marriage certificate he lists his father as Thomas Evan LEY.

There father and mother (Thomas LEY 1841 and Mary LEY 1843) were living in Heydon, Swansea at the time of the 1871 census but Thomas LEY 1841 is recorded as being born in Devonshire.

So this is now the Devon LEY I am looking for anymore information on. There is only one census record for Devon which has a Thomas Ley of the right age, 1851, Devon, Plymtree, District 3 page 2. Born in Upenton Devon with a father Richard LEY (Payhembury 1824), mother Elizabeth (Broadhembury 1820) and two sisters Mary (1849) and Martha (1850) both born in Plymtree.

Thanks
Rolf

Hi all

Im trying to locate references for my great great grandfather Thomas (Evan or Evans) Ley. He was married or with a woman that no-one alive can remember the first name of but they called her Granny Morgan. They had a son called Thomas Albert Ley who married Edith Sleeman (a Bulland whom we think was adopted) in MArch 1916 at the Parish church of Saint Mark in Devon.

I cant quite read what Thomas Evan(s) profession is but it might be something like Marine Foreman.

Thomas Albery Ley was born 1889 according to the birthdate on the marriage certificate.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Rolf

Hi! Some years after you rpost but as you mention Brendon I thought I'd get in touch. I'm researching Ley family also and have from John Ley in Cruwys Morchard around 1798. Was fiddling about one day and found a possible link back to Brendan. Have since lost the link but I'd love to know if these Leys and mne are, well, linked!

Incidentally researched my maiden name of Berry and found connections between both lines, although my parents and immediate ancestors lived and worked in south Wales.

I am researching Valentine Ley, born 1826, who Came from Sachsen Meiningen Germany. They lived in Indianola until a hurricane wiped it out in 1875. They then moved to Cuero Texas. Valentine name his daughter Louisa in 1858, and he named a son August in 1855.I do not have any information before Valentine.
