Hi Debbie, my name is Jackie and I am Ann's youngest sister. I have just started to look into our family history and came across your post, it sounds like you have managed to gain quite a bit of information about the Leys family, I would be really interested to correspond with you if that would be ok? Our dad and I used to come up to Scotland camping every year, and used to stay at a campsite in Alford, and then go visiting all our relatives i.e. Uncle Douglas and Aunt Hilda, Great Aunt Belle in Lumphanan. Dad passed away suddenly in 1983 and I have lost contact with people since then. It was so interesting to see a post from a relative I didn't know I had, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Wishes
Jackie Parker - Nee Leys

Alexander Leys is my great great uncle. I am not sure if he came out before or together with his sister's family ... John Stewart & Jean[jane]Leys Stewart in the 1850's. Alexander also married a Hossie as did his niece, Janet Stewart.
His father's name was John Leys and his mother was Janet McDougal. The were married in the 1790's. I'd have to go back to my notes for the exact year.
Hope this helps.
Tamara

Her mother was never recorded, but is believed to be Indian.

I would love to find any more info.
Jim,

It's a few years since you posted your original message about the LEYS family in Scotland and I don't know if we've made contact before or not. Braemar is the same parish as where my Leys family came from. My ancestor Margaret Mitchell married (b. 1823 Crathie) married George LEYS in 1856. They had children as follows:-

George Leys b. 1857 married Jessie Shand

Peter Leys b. 1858 married Helen Isabella Murray; their son George Leys married Effie Gibb and they had a son Peter LEYS b. 1932 died in Aberdeen in 1960 - an accident I think.

William Leys who went to India and married Bridget Doyle and who had two children William George Leys who married Evelyn Moyers and Margaret Leys who married Frederick Golden

Margaret Leys who married John McDougall

Joan Fisher Leys who married Alexander Davidson and had a son with him but she also had a son George Alexander Downie who emigrated to Canada but died in France in the First World War.

any connection?

also, there is a website about the Logie Coldstone Leys which gives a lot of information about the LEYS family. You're right, it's not a very common name and one of my contact says all of those from Aberdeenshire are related in some way.

Here's hoping to hear from you or anyone else out there who might be conncted.

Tish

Hi! - just found your message re Ellen & Elijah Leys. I think that the name is SEYS, not LEYS. Mistakes are often made with this unusual name and we get post to Leys!
I have researched the Seys family extensively and have much info. Ellen (or Eleanor) was the youngest of 6 children born to Elijah SEYS and his wife Mary (nee Hern). Elijah was a fisherman, farmer, gamekeeper in Woodcroft and Newnham.
The children were:-
George born 1819 died 1893
John b 1822 d 1855
Robert b 1824
James 1826 d 1910
Alexander b 1828 d 1905
Ellen b 1832

Please let me know your connections.

Judith Seys

She married John Stewart and they had a son John b. 2 Nov. 1824 in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Thank you for your time in reading this,
Judy

Hi Charles,

Sure, I know alot about the Leys in Scotland. Frist David Leys was born 19 June 18 1830, he married Barbara Ross. David's Father and Mother were James Leys and Helen Bruce. If you go to Scotland try looking in the area of Old Machar, Aberdeen Scotland. That is where David was Christened.

I only know of a few names that are associated to the Leys through Marriages not the name itself. SO if you want that information let me know.

Thanks for thinking of me when you go to Ireland. Hope you have good hunting and find lots of things out. If you find anything let me know.

Chrissy

Have you heard of the suranme Leys-Tough?

I assume the Surname Leys-Tough was created through marraige. My Great Grandmother's name was Isabella Maggie Leys-Tough. She was born in Aberdeen on the 26th of Sept 1897. Her parents were John Skene Tough and Margaret Tough, M.S. Leys. She married Bertram Thomson and had one son, Douglas Bertram Thomson(my Grandfather). She left her husband when my Grandpa was about 8/9 and went to Australia. She took back her maiden name. On her death certificate her last name reads just Leys but on her birth certificate it reads Leys-Tough. I am trying to research my familys history. I am wondering if you know anything about the Leys-Tough surname. Or if it originates with the surname Leys? As I am a bit lost.

Thanks for your message, Ann. In my research I came across a Christian Leys and a Thomas Leys, brother and sister, who lived in St. Machar parish. Thomas was a partner in Leys, Masson Co., Manufacturers, Aberdeen. In 1833, Christian "seized" one-third of the Cotton and Gordon's Mills estates. I could not find a connections to Jean Leys, but maybe Christian is in your family tree.
Thanks for the tip about the origin of the name.

Jim, No problem with the delay. I wasn't expecting a reply until after the holidays. I've got some good news, My father Sid Leys has just come back from a two week vacation in Scotland. A kind of get-together for my grandmother's 80th birthday. It was a large gathering of all the Leys relatives in the area. He told me he went to my Grandfathers grave site and took some pictures of his and other generations of Leys headstones in the area for me and has also collected e-mail addresses of friends and relatives who will be able to help. As I'm sure you already know Leys is not that common of a name and although we are part of the Farqhuarson clan we also have are own clan and tartan. A lot of my relatives also live throughout Scotland
and once my father has a chance to drop by I'll update any new information I may have.

Carol,
Now that I have stumbled on to how to reply to a message, I thought I would reply to yours again. You may not want to correspond directly by email. My gg-grandmother was Jean Leys, who married Alexander McDonald in Braemar, Scotland, in 1834. They emigrated to Prince Edward Island in the 1850s and their daughter, Catherine, emigrated to Boston about 1883. I don't know where Jean came from. I haven't found any record in Scotland. Leys isn't a common name. I was told that it belongs to the Farqhuarson clan. Maybe if enough of us share our knowledge, we will find connections.
I hope you see my responses and will keep communicating.
Jim

Mark, I apologize for not responding to you sooner. I could not figure out how to reply to your mail. I finally discovered how by accident.
My gg-grandmother was Jean Leys, who married Alexander McDonald in Braemar in 1834. They emigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada, about 1850-something. The story goes that Alex built a stone arch on Jean's father's estate and they eloped. If true, this would indicate she lived somewhere other than Braemar, but I don't know where.
Im my researching, I gathered information about a Christian Leys, near Aberdeen, but I saw no connection with Jean. Maybe she is your ancestor.
I hope you haven't given up on me and will see this late response. You can respond by email, if you want, at jnmacdonald@msn.com .
Jim MacDonald
