We have finally been successful in locating and identifying the Susan mentioned here. Does anyone else have any information regarding other people mentioned in this obituary? Any assistance would be appreciated.

from the November 15, 1907 issue):

"Pioneer Passes Away.

Mrs. Susan Schenyer, the aged mother of Mr. James Johnson, died at the home of her son, two miles east of Twisp, at 9 o'clock on Wednesday evening of this week.

Deceased was 70 years of age. Her death occured with but brief warning that the end was near. She had come over from her home on the Sound the latter part of last week, intending to remain for the winter with her son, and though she was in poor health it was thought not to have reached an alarming condition. Mr. Johnson was in town on business during the day, and returning home in the evening found the invalid in a critical condition, the end coming before medical assistance could be obtained.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the home of Mr. Johnson, Elder J. L. Fulton conducting the services, burial being made in the Beaver creek cemetery.

Little is known or obtainable at this time of the early life of deceased. About seventeen years ago she came to this valley and settled on the tract more recently patented as the Frank Willmarth ranch. Owing to ill health she found it necessary to abandon this land and has since lived alternately in this valley and at Snohomish, where she lost her husband by death about three years ago. Mr. Schenyer was father of the Schenyer brothers, of Winthrop."

Thanks

Charlotte E. Libby was the second wife of my great-great-grandfather Benjamin E. Mull (1835-1891). Benjamin was born in Albany, NY to Cornelius & Hannah Van Steenburgh Mull, lived most of his adult life as a ship's captain in East Marion, NY (with a second home in Brooklyn, NY); and died of pneumonia in Beverly, MA on 4-4-1891. Benjamin's first wife, Harriet Alzina Tuthill Mull, died in 1881. I do not recall offhand the date of Benj's & Charlotte's wedding & Charlotte's parents' names but can look those up in my records. They were married in East Marion, NY. Benjamin had several children by his first marriage: 3 daughters who died in childhood, an adopted daughter Effie Mull Brooks, who died on Long Island in 1960, and my great-grandmother, Charlotte Mull Adams (1880-1928). Benjamin is buried with his first wife and the 3 little girls in East Marion, NY.

Per other emails, I have put together information on Mrs. Ashbell Libbey (Sarah Ellen (Barrett) Libbey and children) re their arrival into the Methow. They were transported over the Chilowist Trail by my g-grandfather, James Aaron Johnson, Sr and his mother Mrs. Susan Schengar in a two wagon rig (one freight wagon followed by a stagecoach for the two women and the three Libbey children). They arrived in the Methow Valley on Novembert 19, 1887. Mr Libbey was in Spokane helping to build the Monroe Street Bridge and roads leading to it with his 4 horse team. He arrived in the Methow by Christmas bringing with him the first glass window in the valley. I do not know the connection between my g-grandfather and the Libbey family or how Mr. Libbey's family came to ride with my g-grandfather and his mother. I would be interested in any more information re this story.
Dianne Hiett Herivel

I am trying to find out more about Maria Libby, my great grandmother, Ellen Davis's sister who I believe married one of the Libbys of Libby, McNeill & Libby in Chicago. Ellen's other sister, Elizabeth Palmer had married Archibald McNeill.
I can't seem to find how it was possible that Maria was married to one of those
two Libby brothers when I look at what's online. It just doesn't seem to make sense, but her name WAS Libby after she got married.
I have since writing this found out she married a Daniel Libby who was a butcher. If anyone can tell me how Daniel was related to the Libbys of the canning co., please email me at jduchene@dduchene.com

There is a conflict. See my reply to the original post about Catherine Libby & Benjamin Coolbroth.
So, I don't know about a Coolbroth connection here.
As Catherine & Eunice come down radically different lines of Libby descent, one would have to follow one of their lines all the way back up to John "the Immigrant" Libby and then back down again.
Eunice was the daughter of Seth and Lydia (Jordan) Libby.
Go to RootsWeb and look at the 'jlibby' database for more info on Catherine and Eunice and their ancestry back to John "the Immigrant" Libby.
Allen E.
Seeking info on Ralph Libby born Nov 28, 1890 in Berwick, Maine.
He had two sisters: Jessie May (Mae) born Aug 16, 1885 and Ethel M(erced) born April 1892.
All three were in the Dover Children's Home in 1896.
The two girls were no longer there in 1897, but Ralph remained until 1900 when he went to Wilbraham, Mass.
Parents are not listed in the records of the home but place of birth for all three is Berwick, Maine.
Any info would be appreciated.

I came across this posting recently and wanted to reach out to you even if it's a couple years down the road. Paul Libby is my great uncle (Mary Acheson's my grandma's sister). He is still living in Portland, OR with his wife Mary, though they are not too technologically literate.

Paul's stories about growing up in China were perhaps recorded on tape cassette at one point or another (I know my dad recorded my grandma's stories). I could certainly try to point one of his kids in your direction, if you are still looking for information.

1873 LIBBY - THOMAS marriage announcement

Hi,

I just posted an wedding announcement for E. R. LIBBY and SUSAN J. THOMAS, married by the Rev. WRIGHT in West Baldwin, Maine.
This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of the The Portland Transcript newspaper (Portland, ME) dated August 16, 1873, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/libbythomas08161873me.html

I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/marriages.htm
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_me.html
http://theoldentimes.com

Lucius H. and Frank C. Libby, sons of Joseph C. Libby (Maine)

I have no connection to these individuals. This is from the May 8, 1883 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette in the "Personal Points" column:

"On Friday, Lucius H. Libby received a telegram from George Q. Richmond of Pueblo, Colorado, stating that Frank C. Libby, his brother, had dropped dead from heart disease that afternoon in that city. Mr. Libby went west four years ago, and at the time of his death was engineer in a mine. He was a son of the late Joseph C. Libby. A wife and two children survive him who are in this city. His age was 38. The remains will not be brought home. Deceased was a member of the Knights of Honor, and his widow will receive the benefit of $200."

Re: Charlotte E. Libby/mull

Hello,
You have a problem as most of the published and online Libby data is for descendants of John Libby who emigrated to Scarborough, ME in the early 1600’s. But, your Charlotte’s father appears to have emigrated to America about 1850 (therefore is not a descendant of the well documented John). So, it will be harder to find data on this line.
I have no access to Connecticut Marriage Records so I can’t help you with Charlotte’s marriage data.
Charlotte E. (Libby) Mull, born Sep 1859 in CT, was listed as a widow in the 1900 Groton, CT Census. It said that her father’s birthplace was England. Her sons, Benjamin D. Mull, born in Feb 1885 in CT, and Allen J. Mull, born Nov 1886 in CT, were living with her. As Charlotte was listed as having had 2 children and they were still alive and she was now a widow, Ben & Allen would have been her only Mull children. There was a widowed “Nellie” (this name (unless it was a nickname) conflicts with other data – see below) Libby, listed as Charlotte’s mother, born Jan 1835, birthplace listed as unknown, also living with her. Nellie was listed as having had 3 children and all 3 were still alive.
Backtracking from there, I didn’t see Charlotte in the 1880 Census. Either she wasn’t listed or I didn’t look hard enough. Sigh …. That one might have identified her husband. ? ? ?
In the 1870 Groton, CT Census, Charlotte Libby , born 1859 in CT, shows up with her parents and her 2 brothers. Her father was Josiah A. Libby, a blacksmith, born about 1836 in England, and her mother was Mary A. (NOT Nellie), born about 1836 in CT. (I saw (unsourced) online info that claimed that her mother’s maiden name was Mary A. Terney.) Her brothers were John A. Libby, born about 1860 in CT, and Chas J. Libby, born about 1863 in CT.
In the 1860 Groton, CT Census, the same Josiah A. and Mary A. Libby show up again with their daughter, Charlotte E. Libby, and son John A. Libby. With them was Josiah’s mother-in-law (therefore Mary’s mother), Ellen Turney, born in 1810.
There was a record of a Josiah Libby, born about 1836, from Great Britain, arriving in New York City on the ship “Marquis of Chandos” from Penzance on 7 Jun 1851. The only other Josiah Libby recorded on the available (not all are available online!) New York Passenger Lists was the wrong age to have been Charlotte’s father. So, there is a good chance (though this isn’t proof positive) that this Josiah was indeed Charlotte’s father.
The 1841 Census of Cornwall, England lists a Josiah Libby born about 1836. (BTW: most Libbys living in England lived in, or near, Cornwall.)
I saw (unsourced) online data stating that Charlotte’s father was Josiah Libby, born 25 Mar 1836. He supposedly died 12 Nov 1896 in New London, CT. That adds up with what I saw in the Census data.
As this is not my Libby line, and has absolutely no connection to my Libby ancestry, I know nothing more about this family group. But, I hope that this little I found is helpful to you.
Allen E. Humphries
John Libby Family Association
Board of Directors
Deposition of Samuel Libbey, Orono, Maine

I recently obtained a copy of the GGG grandfather's Civil War pension file. Among other things included in the file was a handwritten deposition which states as follows:

Case of Abner W. Perkins, No. 529299

On this 16th day of June, 1890, at Orono, County of Penobscot, State of Maine, before me, _____ Cowles, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Samuel Libbey, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during the Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says:

I am 60 years of age, a druggist, residence and post office, Orono, Penobscot Co., Maine.

I know the claimant Abner W. Perkins – have known him 30 years. He has always traded with me and is well known to me – as far as I knew when he went into the army he was a strong healthy man for 25 years out of the 30 I have been here. I was the only druggist in the village and if he had required any medicine he would naturally came to me for them.

I do not remember when Perkins returned from the army, but I remember that he has gotten medicines from me frequently. I can’t say how far back – how many years ago – not even approximately – the medicines furnished, to the best of my recollection were for kidney and liver diseases – judging from the character of its medicines – add – and for rheumatic troubles.

No relation no interest I have understood the examiner’s questions and my answers to the same are correctly recorded.

SAMUEL LIBBY
Deponent
(p. 38)
Good to hear from you! We have very little information on William & Rhoda Libby Harris lines. All we know as of now is William & Rhoda had Children Evelyn, Marie, Vera Rhoda & Wilfred. Most of the Libby's in the Essex county area are your relatives also.
Also it is Clifford that is on the census you mention. He was born 19 Dec 1905 d. 24 Jul 1921 of drowning. He and his parents are buried in St Stephens Anglican Churchyard, Windsor, (South Sandwich/Oldcastle), Essex, Ontario, Canada.
Contact me via email at rlibby8489@aol.com. as I have tons of other information.
I'm not sure I can add any information regarding your uncles, but I believe your Robert Libby to be the brother of my Harriet Harris, nee Libby. She emigrated with her three children in 1900 and as the 1901 census shows stayed with her brother Robert & his family in Toronto. By 1911, I have Harriet living with a Thomas Libby, wife Lizzy and son Efford (possibly Clifford or Richard) age 5 in Essex, Ontario. We are related through Harriet's daughter Rhoda Harris.

Wealthy Townsend (ca. 1808-alive 1885) was the daughter of Asa Townsend (1774-alive 1854) and Huldah Barstow who left Massachusetts for first Lower Canada and then Upper Canada in about 1802. They lived in Etobicoke Twp., near what became Toronto until 1812 when they moved to Westminster Township near what is now London, Ontario. The Townsends relocated to the Ausable River in what later became Bosanquet and Williams Townships in Lambton and Middlesex Counties respectively in 1822 and remained there until the 1850s. Wealthy probably had a brother or half-brother named Ezekiel (ca 1821-1862).

Hi, These are my GGGG grandparents. I do have the line of all the Libby's from that point that are listed. I did hit a brick wall on this though, as I am not able to find any siblings of this John Libby and Philippa Maynard has a brother John Maynard as of the death of her husband, but some of the sites I looked into does not list any siblings of Philippa. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Wow!! What a quick reply! Thank you.
This offers new information as well as new leads. My goal is to contact a family member who 1) may have informal stories to share and 2) pictures that would add to the story. Is the source and date of this Libby information known? If not, I will nonetheless pursue the new leads.

Hopefully I am not asking too much: Does the Libby Association also have information on Dr. Harold Earl Libby (1920-1973)? Harold's grandfather was a brother to Walter's father. Although Harold was not a native to Lincoln, he practiced in Lincoln, Maine from 1937 to 1946 and qualifies for inclusion in the same, next publication of the society.

Again, thank you very much. Each puzzle piece helps. - Dottie
