The father and grand father of Alexander Liles

So I have traced my roots back to Alexander liles Birth 20 MAR 1832 in Caloway County, Kentucky
Death 9 FEB 1901 in Henderson, Ia

Who is my great great great grandfather and I have some information that indicates that his father is Samuel liles born in 1798 but then the trail goes cold from there. Does anyone have any information as to who Samuel was married to, who his father was etc? Any information you could share would be appreciated.

Hi! My great uncle would be Jesse A. Liles. His father was Edward Gerard Liles and he married Laura Anna Goodale. But Laura was Jesse's step mother... found in 1910 Census in Black Dog Township, Osage County, Oklahoma. I believe that Jessie was the son of Margaret Surber and Edward Gerard Liles.. (Edward was married 3 times)
I would sure like to continue the family tree and maybe get more info about Jesse A. Liles. He served in the army; I sent for his service papers but they didn't have anything further.
Thanks,
Marie
I have conducted exhaustive research online for Henry Liles, Sr (1667-1723) (my 8th Great Grandfather). Like many of you, I continue to search for the link to Europe. Recently, I found the following information, but would appreciate any assistance any of you may offer. My tree is public (Liles-Craig Family Tree) and has several sources for review. Below is the most recent research that may be of benefit:

There is evidence that a "John Lile" (b. 1636 - baptised Nov. 13, 1636 in Yorkshire, England [Register Book of Wath-Upon-Dearne, at 50]), son of Robert Lile (m. Nov. 29, 1633 to Alice Sawtry in Yorkshire, England [Register Book of Wath-Upon-Dearne, at 46]), married Ann Beaswich in London, England (m. Aug. 13, 1654 [London, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812, at 7]). A possible sister, Anne Lile (b. 1656 - baptised Jan. 27, 1656 in St. Saviour, Denmark Park, Surrey, Southwark, Parish [London, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812, at 16]). John Lile (no mention of other family members) arrived in VA in 1656, having been bonded by Martin Baker in New Kent,VA. [GREER, GEORGE CABELL. Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666. Richmond [Va.]: W.C. Hill Printing Co., 1912, 376p. Reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1978. Repr. 1982., at 206]. As of this date, I've not been able to make any documented connection to Henry Liles; however, due to the dates, I suspect that John Lile may have been his father.

In the late 1960's, a gentleman visited us at our home in Atlanta. He gave my grandparents a typed history of the Liles family. His version of the origin: the name is French, L'Isles - the islands. From France to England and Scotland. It also mentioned an early town in Georgia - Lilesville - that was associated with his branch. No one knows what happened to those papers. Sure would love to have them now. My grandfather was Emmett Liles born 1909 to Howell & Bell Mask Liles in Alabama.

I believe that Laura Liles is my Maternal Great Great Grandmother.

I have seen the surname Smith before too. I have not seen the marriage license of either sisters. I will have to try and check out a license for Laura Liles. She married Frank Chase on the 26th of March 1882. I have not found a birth certificate for Laura either. But am still looking. I did find that Laura and Belle's father James W Liles died 3 March 1903, Brown Valley, Custer Nebraska and buried in the Sand Valley Cemetery. I do believe I found James and Margaret in the 1900 Census for Delight, Custer, Neb/ Callaway stating 40 years of marriage. James was 68 and Margaret was 60, also a granddaughter named Maude age 14 living with them. I am still looking. Supposedly this Margaret had 8 children and 5 still living in 1900. Laura died in 1925 in Oakfield, IA.

Laura's sister Belle was my great-grandmother. I have seen that marriage record for Mary Margaret Inglish but didn't think that was the correct person. Do you suppose the last name might have been recorded incorrectly as Inglish? The marriage records for Laura and Laura's sisters Ella and Emma all list their mother's name as Margaret SMITH.

I have found that James W Liles married Mary Margaret Inglish July 12, 1858 in Massac Co. Illinois. James was born Feb 22, 1832 in MO. Supposedly his wife was born in Maine, her Father Canada English and her Mother born in Maine. Evidently She didn't go by Mary but her Middle name Margaret. James died 3 March, 1903 in Brown Valley, Custer, Nebraska. Their daughter Laura Liles is my line. Laura Liles was born 21 Jan 1866 Grand Island, Illinois.

No, I was looking at the headstone itself so it's no typo. And I've got the picture I took as well; it's very clearly marked. My parents still live in that area so I checked the headstone about a month ago.
And yes, there were settlers in Texas that early. Anyone who arrived in Texas before 1850 is considered a "founding family" per the Texas website.
Actually, my Jeremiah shows up on the Panola TX census in 1860 as do his brothers and several of my ancestors from another side, some of whom arrived as early as 1840.
Thanks for the ideas, though!
Carla

Yes, that's my Priscilla. Enoch died in 1830 and she moved on to Coweta, GA with several of her sons, and eventually on down to Texas. I'm actually not sure what happened to her after Coweta. Some researchers think she died there in 1841, but there's a grave marker for her in Panola County, TX saying she died in 1879.
Jeremiah died in 1862 in the Civil War, as did Robert. But Priscilla doesn't show up on any of the census after that 1850 one, grave marker notwithstanding.

Is your 1789 death date in TX correct or a typo. I wouldn't even think settlers were in TX that early. Also, I do not know if you have the following info or not but there is a Priscilla (50) living in the household of Jeremiah (25)on the 1850 census in Coweta, Georgia. That said I am guessing that there are 2 different Priscilla's. Oh I guess I should add that the "s" was so faint that this family was indexed as Lile.

Thanks Janet. I'm afraid I don't have anyone to act as my proxy. I'm three generations from my Liles/Lyles surname, two of those generations having only girls, with two of those generations being orphaned by age 4. In other words, it's been nearly 200 years since a male Liles was born in my family (1826). There is probably a distant cousin out there somewhere, but no one 'nearby.'
Thanks anyway!
Tiger Strong

You are correct in that these two cemeteries burials have been documented and I have a copy of the burial names (somewhere, and may still be found online. KY does have cemetery laws. But laws have to be enforced, charges have to be filed, facts have to be proven, and probably discussed in court meaning lawyers have to be paid, etc, on and on. Would seem to be very difficult and expensive to do anything about.

I do believe there is a list of who's buried in theses Liles cemeteries at the genealogy section in either the courthouse or library in Henderson Co., KY. I may even have a copy of it. I will have to look when I am home from this trip. You may also look on the USGENWEB site for Henderson and Webster Co., KY. It may be on one of these site. I thought it was a law that one had to preserve family cemeteries even it they are in the middle of farm fields. I see these little cemeteries fenced off from the crops all of the time here in VA and in IN. Too bad someone had no respect for this Liles cemetery.

Janet
You can have the Liles YDNA in your family tested by proxy by having a cousin who descends from one of Jeremiah's other son's (if there are any) who did have son's who had son's. You will have to find a male in your Liles family who fits this pattern. For Example. I wanted to have my maiden name tested for it's YDNA. As a female I could not have been tested but I do have 3 brothers who were born with this surname. I was lucky however, my grandfather with this surname had only one brother who descended from this surname. This brother had only one female child who had 2 female children so my brother's YDNA results would also be used as proxy for my female cousins maternal grandmothes maiden name. So they know what the YDNA of their maternal grandfather was. A good book on DNA and genealogy is "Tracing Your Roots with DNA" by Megan Smolenyac. No question is stupid.

Janet

There are two older Liles Cemeteries there in Henderson Co, KY. I visited one of them or at least the site of one a few years ago. Sadly it appears to have been bulldosed. A number, perhaps all, of grave marker stones were pilled up in one big pile. It is/was located in a working farm field.

However, there is a headstone in Waldrop Cemetery in PAnola Co, TX giving her date of death as March 10, 1789.
Does anyone out there have information that can resolve this apparent contradiction?

THANKS!

Looking for information on Maggie Liles, daughter of David Liles and Martha Mount. I know that Maggie married James C. Bradshaw in 1877, but would like to know more about her life before marriage. And, if possible, I would like a picture of her. Thanks for any help. I appreciate it.
Joy Budde, Groesbeck, Texas
joybudde@gmail.com
