Remembering Bobby

I always remember our trips to Elkhart growing up and making the trek from Nevada. Bobby was a year older than I, but, I thought he was the coolest guy around and was like a "Daniel Boone" in the woods. He kept me from stepping on a coral snake, once. One time, in the 60's, we snuck to watch a "lively" church service in an evening. I have seen Bobby's name on the Wall, twice. I was beginning my 2nd year of college in Aug. '71 when he was killed. How much more sad it was that he was to come back to the "world" w/in the month. Was this Friendly fire? I never found out for sure. I served US Army 1972-74 and always remembered my kin. THX for the opportunity to post.

Re: John Kearney Glin Limerick Ireland

Hi Tom,
Thank you so much for giving me this information. I have heard of you before and I am rather touched that you responded to my query.

I began my search for John Kearney many many years ago. Finding family for John is my biggest passion! I live in Yarmouth Maine in the home that John built in 1850.

There is a local historical book that says that John settled in Yarmouth because he liked the feeling of our sea faring town. That is undoubtedly true. The images I have seen of Glin and the Shannon River remind me so much of Yarmouth and the sea coast not too far from my home.

I have decided that John was most definitely born about 1819, so while I think that there is a definite family connection, I am wondering if Daniel could be a brother or even a cousin. John would have been 11 years old when Daniel was born. Is there any information about Daniel's parents or their occupation? I am going to guess that they were farmers as that is what John was when he came to Yarmouth.

Ancestry.com came out with the Tithe records and in cross comparing the Tithe and Griffith's Valuation from Ask about Ireland.com, I have found a John Kearney living in Ballydonhoe. And because first names passed onto family for generations, what is the likely hood that this John Kearney is John Kearney's father?

I know for certain that John Kearney immigrated to St. John NB in between 1842-1847. He states his date of immigration on his Naturalization record and on his Declaration of Citizenship from 1847. This leads me to believe that he was not in Kilfergus when the Griffith's Valuation was being completed in 1852, but his father might have been.

Also, on the FamilySearch.org site, I have found 2 death records from the Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958. One is for John Kearney and the other is for Mary Kearney, both from Glin.

Name: John Kearney
Registration district: Glin
Record type: DEATHS
Registration date - quarter and year: 1871
Estimated birth year: 1791
Age: 80
Mother surnames:
Film number: 101585
Volume: 20
Page: 201
Digital GS number: 4200217
Image number: 00397
Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958

Name: Mary Kearney- person of interest
Registration district: Glin
Record type: DEATHS
Registration date - quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1881
Estimated birth year: 1826
Age: 55
Mother surnames:
Film number: 101590
Volume: 5
Page: 215
Digital GS number: 4200672
Image number: 00357
Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958

Given the age of John (80), he could possibly be John's father and Mary could be John's sister. She was only 55 when she died, putting her birth year at approximately 1826.

Now going back to the name pattern, John's first child was Mary, his second child was Nellie/Ellen and his third child was Joseph. All the children were born in between 1847-1851. Joseph is my 2x great grandfather. Perhaps John's mother's name was Mary or Ellen? John's wife was Mary Scanlan/Scannell. Perhaps they named their first child after Mary Scanlan?

Sorry to go on and on! I am a huge fan of yours. A few years ago, I find your email on a website. I mustered up the courage to email you, but having not heard back, I did not want to pester you.

There is a bit of drama going on in Yarmouth right now. My family after years of good and responsible land ownership, is selling John McKearney's land. It will be named McKearney Village in his honor. It is a sad day in our family to be selling his land. It encompasses about 67 acres.

Feel free to email me off Roots web. And thank you again so much!
Regards, Liz Dow
Yarmouth Maine
elizabethdow1 at gmail dot com

Hi Liz,
I found a Daniel Kearney from Killeaney, Glin, in the roll books of Glin Boys School. This Daniel was born in 1830 so he may have been a son. First names passed on in families for generations.
Tom Donovan.
Glin Historical Society

It is very kind of you to offer to help us Limerick researchers! Thank you.

My brick wall is this: In 1850 there is a family in Frederick County, VA headed by Eliza Limerick, age 36, born in Virginia. Prior to 1850 there were no Limricks there that I can find. She had the following children: Ellen 17, Margaret 15, Lucy 13 (my great grandmother), Catherine 11, Harriet 8, Philip 6, Caroline 5, Matilda 3, Martha 1. By 1860 Ellen is married, Caroline is elsewhere, and there is a John age 26 and Nancy 4 in Eliza's household.

Records that I have found show Eliza to be single. One account says that she was married to a John Ritter who died in 1854 - she was not. However, one son changed his name to Ritter and some of the daughters were referred to as members of the Ritter family, so it is certainly possible that a John Ritter was father to some or all the children.
I have been unable to place Eliza (in some records Mary Eliza) in any family that I know about.

If you have any information in your files that would help me identify (Mary) Eliza Limerick, I would be most grateful.

I have collected information about all her children - a little for some and a lot for others - which I will gladly share if anyone is interested.
I am also related through Wm Henry Limerick (born 1871). He would have been my great grandfather through his second marriage to Alma Stone. Do you have any info you would like to share with me?

Hi - haven't been in contact lately. Now another researcher is trying to convince me that the 1845 marriage of George Limerick & Lettitia Limerick is incorrect. He thinks the bride is an adopted dau of Donahays. My Lettitia was adopted by that family but I haven't found a reason to believe my marriage info is wrong.

Any clues in your data?

Joyce

John Kearney Glin Limerick Ireland

Hello,
I have recently found John (Mc)Kearney's Declaration of Citizenship to the USA. In the document I found that he was born in "Glynn" or Glin, in Civil Parish Kilfergus, in Shanid Barony, in the county of Limerick in 1819. The document states that he migrated to St. John New Brunswick Canada in either the second day of May 1842 or on about the 26th day of June in 1842. He then went to Sidney Maine in the spring of 1843 and lived there until the spring of 1845 and then moved to the Portland Maine area in 1845. He built his house in Yarmouth Maine in 1847. At some time he married Mary Scanlon. I do not know when or where. Her father's name was John Scanlon and both Mary Scanlon and her father were born in Ireland. And once again, I do not know where. Mary was born in 1817.

I am wondering if anyone has any information about Mary Scanlon and:
1. Daniel Kearney in Killeanymore townland in Kilfergus.
2. John Kearney in Ballydonohoe townland in Kilfergus too.

They are both listed in the Griffiths valuation from faileromhat.com. I am wondering if they are brothers, uncles or possibly even a father.

Thanks in advance! Liz Dow
He built his house in Yarmouth Maine in 1847.
I cannot find a "Glynn" in Limerick. I have found:
1. Glen townland in Coonagh Barony, in Civil Parish Grean, in PLU Tipperary in County Limerick.
2. Glen townland in Clanwilliam Barony, in Cahernarry Civil Parish, in PLU Limerick in County Limerick.
3. Glen in Pallasgreen Parish in the Dioces of Cashel & Emly.
4. Glen in Donaghmore-Knockea Parish in Limerick Dioces.
5. Glin Town and Glin Demesne in Kilfergus Civil Parish in Limerick Diocese both in Shanid Barony in Glin PLU.

My problem is I do not know if "Glynn" refers to Glen or Glin. Any opinion would be welcomed!
Thanks! Liz Dow
