Born 1859 in Alabama, she's my great-grandmother, and I'd appreciate information about her parents, etc. She married Richard Tanner (b.1856, location unknown) and they appear on the 1900 census. Their daughter, Claudia Sims Tanner (b. Jan 1885 in AL, died Aug 12, 1960 in FL), and their son George F. Tanner (b.March 1887 in Alabama) were my Grandmother and my Uncle.

To all,
My father is Waren Eugene Linden 1922-1991. My Grandfather was John Francis Linden 1881-1934. I had been told by my father that we were of German decent. John Francis Linden married my Grandmother Anna May Hammer 1896-1968. When John Francis died in 1934 She remarried to Lyman Carens. I am searchin for John Francis's father.

It could Be John James Linden because I have a Missouri death certificate for Susan francis Linden listing him as spouse. But other records show his death as 1870. and my granfather was born in 1881.

Re: STELLA LINDEN

Wikipedia has a biography of Stella LINDEN, actress, author and screenwriter which is factual to a degree. What is most interesting is the fact, unreferenced, that she died in New Mexico on 6/3/2005. Is there any way this can be corroborated? Has anyone access to records of this death?

Stella is my step-mother and, although I am acquainted with her early life up to around 1950, I am still struggling to put together what she did after she left England for the bright lights of America. She did marry again, but it is not known to whom and when, apart from it being around 1951 +/- one year.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who came in contact with her in America, particularly California where she spent most of her time around Hollywood and Los Angeles.

Chris Duff

Leonard Louis Linden 1931-1981

The text below is a verbatim transcript of a memorial published in Footnotes, a publication of the American Sociological Assocation. Leonard was my wife's father.

****************************
Leonard Louis Linden
(1931-1981)

Our colleague and friend, Leonard L. Linden, died on Sunday, March 22, 1981 after suffering a heart attack while administering a final examination. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marie Frances Linden, Athens; a daughter, Miss Les Lee Linden, Athens; his father, Irving Linden, Miami; and a sister, Miss Sondra R. Linden, Washington, D.C. A memorial service was held on April 2 in Athens.

Leonard had been a member of the Sociology Department at the University of Georgia since July, 1968. His main concern while confined in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital was about the students in his three classes during the Winter Quarter. In his typical conscientious manner he requested that all final examinations and term papers be brought to him in the ICU, where he attempted to grade them. Finding himself not up to the task, Leonard agreed to a delay, and cheerfully asserted that he would complete the task as soon as he was transferred to a private room in the hospital; he was faithful to the end to his students.

Leonard Louis Linden was born on January 8, 1931 in New York City, the son of Irving and Faye Linden. He was raised and educated in and around Miami, Florida.

Leonard received his BA degree in 1957, and his MA in 1959, both degrees in Sociology and Psychology. He was awarded the PhD in sociology in 1967. All degrees were received at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Before completing the PhD, Leonard served as Research Assistant in Medical Sociology, Instructor in Sociology and in Psychiatry, as well as in Social Science at the University of Florida. For two hears he was Statistician and Acting Chief of the Special Reports Section of the Mortality Statistics Branch, National Center for Health Statistics.

After completion of the PhD, Leonard was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Florida. For three years, Leonard as a predoctoral Research Fellow with the United States Public Health Service. In 1965, he was an official delegate of the National Center for health Statistics in Ottawa, Canada.

Leonard’s main interests were in demography, statistics, and the sociology of medicine. He was an expert in suicidology and suicide prevention for which he held research grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, and was the author and co-author of several articles and book chapters on these subjects. He was a consultant on suicide prevention.

Leonard was very active, especially in the American Association of Suicidology and the Southern Sociological Society, in which he presented papers and held various offices. He had been scheduled for two important sessions on the Sociology of Suicidal Behavior at the annual meeting of the Southern Sociological Society, which was held in Louisville two weeks after his death. He was also active in the American Sociological Association, American Statistical Association, Population Association of America, Rural Sociological Society, Gerontological Society, Society for Applied Anthropology, and the Society for Medical Anthropology.

Our most persistent recollection of Leonard – and the thing we already miss most – is his cheery, inevitable, daily greeting, “Give me a good word for today.” His broad smile and request for a “good word” started off our relationship in Baldwin Hall each morning.

His sense of humor was typically self-depreciating. For example, when the campus carpenters built a large janitor’s closet into one corner of the second-floor men’s room, Leonard jokingly referred to it as his new office. He was so insistent over the next several weeks that the administration would soon move him and his things there that one Saturday a colleague removed Leonard’s nameplate from his office door and transferred it to the door of the janitor’s closet. Leonard discovered it there the following Monday morning and enjoyed it immensely. Later he happily accused several friends of the dastardly deed. Leonard was also very considerate of others, even in his last illness, wanting to avoid at all costs inconveniencing his friends with his personal matters.

Despite his smile and sense of humor, Leonard took life very seriously. While at the University of Georgia, he taught thousands of students in introductory sociology, various courses in demongraphy, and in the sociology of medicine. He was devoted to his teaching and wanted his students to be as intense about sociology as he was. He would not tolerate those who were in his classes simply to earn five credits, which occasionally led some students to grumble. However, those who understood what he intended and shared his sense of challenge were devoted to him. Students are rarely neutral about stimulating and demanding professors, and Leonard was not an exception in this regard.

Leonard also had high standards for the conduct of departmental and university affairs: the general welfare of the department and institution were constantly on his mind.

Leonard was impeccable in his personal behavior. His colleagues and students trusted him; in thirteen years of shared professional life at the University of Georgia, that trust was never betrayed. He was elegant in thought and motive and deed.

Leonard was a friend with a smile when one needed a friend. He was wise when one needed advice. His many friends in the American Sociological Association will miss him and share the memories of his friendship.

Homer C. Cooper
K. Imogene Dean
Dreman Kelley
[authors]

Footnotes
Published by the American Sociological Association
1722 N St NW, Washington DC 20036 – (202) 833-3410
August 1981 – Vol. 9, No. 6
Down and lived in villages between Lurganare where a John Linden was born in 1791,and Rostrevor. The family names were John, George, and William,so I don't think we have a connection.Best wishes.

Hello

I have just read this thread while idly surfing. My name is Brendan Linden and I am originally from the village of Ballynahinch in County Down. My grandfather was William Linden, born in 1888. His father, my great-grandfather was Francis Linden, born in 1847 and, I believe, my great-great-grandfather was William Linden, except that we have no records of this. I was interested to know what the origin of your William Linden was.

- Brendan

Re: STELLA LINDEN - actress, screenwriter and author.

An update: Stella LINDEN married my father Terence DUFF in July 1948 at the Paddington Registrar's Office, London. Stella's mother had a sister and they were both related to the WIMBUSH family of Birmingham who were proprietors of confectionery and tea-shops. Stella had a step-brother called Ambrose.

Stella was an actress and writer. She helped John Osborne write his first play and directed it in Huddersfield in 1950. In 1951, she left for America and about a year later wrote to my father saying she had had a 'quickie' divorce in Mexico. Apart from a TV appearance in late 1951, her other credits in America are writing a script for a Monkees TV episode, and writing a book "Two a Penny" which became a film for which she wrote the screenplay. Nothing else is known of her.

Can anyone help?
Chris

I wish I had the info. you are in need of, but in reading your question I was hoping that maybe your family had some connection to my husband's. His grandfather died around 1950 I believe and his name was David Linden from the Paso Robles area, very near to Fresno and Oakland. If you have any information linking him to your family I"d love to receive that. He has no information on his grandfather as he died when his mother was three years old. I keep looking for info. for/on the family when time permits.

Thank you and I hope your information comes about.

Edgar Linden

Hi There,

I have been having real trouble finding any information about my Great Grandfather Edgar Linden born in Kensington, London 1882. All i have is information that my nan has given me directly.
I know he is linked to America or Canada as one of his children died there a few years ago (Edward) but i cant be sure where about. He originally married an unknown woman and had Alice Linden, Edgar Linden (possibly), Edward Linden and Bill, my Nan says she has more half brothers and sisters but never met them.
He then Remarried to Louisa Kemp and had Marie, John, Edna, Ron and June. These names may be repeated but again cant be sure.
My nan is adament that somewhere along the line her fathers relatives were linked to a ship sinking. Would be nice to finally get some answers. In the 1891 census he is down as living with a woman named Charlotte and her husband.

Thanks for any help/info.

Lena (elen in census) had a twin brother who died at age two. 1880 census shows Elen, Catharine, Mary, Anna, Virginia, Margreat, Elizabeth. Also have names Clara and Janet. Thomas died in a blizzard in 1882 in Sleepy Eye Mn and died there. I am a descendant of Lena.
deeweiss@comcast.net

Would you please reply to me with the names you are referring to in your Linden Tree.
My Peter Linden was born in Berdorf, Luxembourg to Theodore Linden and Maria Margaretha Wagener. Theo was the son of Pierre Linden and Margaretha Kartheiser. Maria Wagener was the daughter of Peter Wagener and Antoinette Lehnen.
Thank you for your inquiry and time to respond.
Please put Linden genealogy in the subject line.
Laura Linden Freeman
hfreeman@sktc.net
