Elizabeth Glen

Does anyone have documented proof of the parents of Elizabeth Glen, wife of Evert Wendell, 1680c.? I have seen on others' trees that she is the daughter of Johannes Glen(John Alexander Glen) & Annatie Peek. Others show Robert Sanders Glen or Robert Sanders & Anna Peek or Maritje Barentse. The records of her baptism and marriage form the Dutch Reform Church in Schenectedy, NY were lost in the fire during the Schenectedy Massacre (1690).

Re: Arthur Dean Lindsay

I Checked out a book from the library called Weird Georgia by Jim Miles and they had a chapter in there on Arthur Dean Lindsey. It stated that he was a resident of Pittsburg, Pa and would visit a Dr. R. C. Lloyd in Ocilla, Ga.

It also stated that A.D. Lindsey recorded three different deeds at the courthouse to own the universe. The first claimed "All of the property known as planets, islands of space or other matter, henceforth to be known as A.D. Lindsey's Archipelago, located in all the region visible upward, etc.....".

The records are suppose to be in Irwin County Courthouse in Georgia.

Check the book out!

This could be good news for any Lindsey Ancestors with this new effort of billionaires wanting to mine astroids (if it is true).

Hope this gets to you and you find out more information.

Good Luck,
Robert Irvin Lindsay / Lindsey

I am looking for information regarding Robert Irvin Lindsay. He is my g-g-grandpa.

WANT TO KNOW: A specific birth date and birth place. Parents names and locations, where specifically they immigrated from. Siblings of his parents.

HERE'S WHAT I KNOW:
Robert Irvin Lindsay (listed as R.C. on a census)
Born: 1834ish
Place: Had Sunderland Twp, Bennington, VT but could possibly be MI
Died: 7 March 1887
Place: Kansas City, MO (what on earth was he doing there when the rest of the family was usually in MI or northern IA? How did he die?)

From Irvin Robert Lindsay's obituary on the article archiver site, Irvin Robert was Robert Irvin and Jerusha's (Maiden: Jerusha Jane Lawrence) only son. Robert Irvin died when his son was 12 years old.

From Grandpa Emerson/Lindsay: They're Irish. Apparently Robert Irvin Lindsay's parents emigrated from Ireland. I have seen this listed on a census, but that's all I can find.

I know there was one son (Irvin Robert) and two daughter's (Jennette/Nettie b. 21 Sep. 1861 and Elphie/Elfie b. 1863). I believe one of the daughter's died young.

He might have had an Uncle James Lindsay. A passed down family story says that Robert Irvin held the horses for Jesse James while he robbed banks. Would like verification or sources of this.

Lindsay or Linsesay Alexander of Amsterdam NY

Okay, It was a big surprise when I found this, I've retyped it from the pages of "New Amsterdam and Its People". Enjoy !!

Janice at Celticdene@q.com

New Amsterdam and Its People
page 302

Next adjoining upon the north to the apparently vacant plot of Albert Cornelissen in the Smits Vly, stood in 1655 a house with about half an acre of ground, belonging to an individual who was a "rara avis" in New amsterdam, a thoroughly Teutonized Scotchman, as much of a curiosity in his way as was the Teutonized Englishman, Carel van Brugge, already spoken of. This person's appellation among his neighbors was the good honest Dutch name of "Sander Leendertsen. A little investigation, however, shows him to have been Alexander (or Sandy) Lindesay, of the Glen, in Scotland...*(1)*

*(1)* His appellation is evidently derived from the ancient and well-known division of the Lindesay family of Scotland into the branch of Glenesk (called frequently "of the Glen") and into that of "the Mount." The later, which is the elder branch, has had considerable lustre thrown upon it by one of its members, Sir David Lindesay, the Scottish poet of the sixteenth century, who bore the office of heraldic King-at-arms under JamesIV. Many will remember the poet's description as given by Sir Walter Scott, in Marmion":

"He was a man of middle age;
In aspect manly, grave, and sage,
As on King's errand come;
But in the glances of his eye,
A penetrating, keen, and sly
Expression found its home;
The flash of that satiric rage,

page 303

...hood of Inverness. In Dutch times he used the name Sander Leendertsen freely but after the English regime commenced, he called himself usually Alexander Glenn, by which family name his descendants were known.

Alexander Lindesay, or Leendertsen, is said to have come to New Netherland at a very early period employed in some capacity by the West India Company at its Fort Nassau on the Delaware River, where in 1633 he, with Augustyn Heermans, were witnesses of the sale of lands on the Schuylkill River by the Indians to Arent Coersen. Sander soon became a Indian trader, apparently dividing his time between New Amsterdam and Fort Orange or Albany, at which latter settlement he is found as early as 1646. His place in the Smits Vly, which had formerly been the easterly half of the garden and ground of Skipper Lourens Cornelissen, was granted to Sander Leendertsen by the Director and Council in 1646, it having been forfeited by Cornelissen by reason of his allowing it to remain vacant and unimproved for more than the prescribed period (Some years later Sander acquired a release from Skipper Cornelissen.) Here Sander immediately built a stone house, upon the site of the present glue warehouse, No 211 Pearl Street, and here resided when in New Amsterdam, certainly as later as 1658, and possibly later; *(2)*...

"Which bursting on the early stage,
Branded the vices of the age,
And broke the keys of Rome.
Still is thy name in high account,
And still thy verse has charms,
Sir David Lindesay of the Mount,
Lord Lion King-at-arms!"

page 304

of Schenectady, after which date there is no evidence that he again resided in New York*(1)*...

1- In 1656 he acted as an agent at New Amsterdam for Jacob Flodder of Fort ORange, in the sale and conveyance by the latter of the lots in his speculative purchase of what was known as the Outhock of the Damen farm.

...A few years before this latter date he is said to have parted with his property in the Smits Vly, but if this were the case, he must have soon resumed it, possibly by virtue of a maortgage upon it. The place seems for many years to have been in the possession of various tenants. About the time if the surrender to the English in 1664, the house appears to have been occupied by one James Webb, a Lononer, as a tavern or lodging-house with the sign of St George and the Dragon.

At the frontier settlement of Schenectady, Alexander Lindesay, or Glenn, spent the last twenty years of his life. His house, like those of the rest of the settlers, was within the stockaded village, but his land embraced a tract of nearly a thousand acres of fertile meadows on the north side of the Mohawk River, and to this he gave the name of Nova Scotia. Alexander did not live to witness the massacre of his neighbors in 1690 by the French and Indians; he had died about five years before that event, The members of his family, however were treated with respect by the French commandant. Feelings of humanity, and possibly some Jacobite propensities in the Scotch blood of the Glenn, had induced them to show kindness to certain Frenchman who had been taken prisoners by the English in the war which Louis XIV. was waging to restore James II to the English throne; and as a mark of gratitude the Glenn house in Schenectady is said to have been spared by the expressed command of the French governor of Canada on the destruction of the rest of the village in 1690.

page 305

A more queit state of affairs in the next century induced the Glenns to build the stately, albeit somewhat neglected old mansion which still stands upon their estate, on the north side of the Mohawk River at Schenectady. The stroller, crossing the long bridge over the Mohawk at Schenectady, and turning westward along the banks of the river, will see to his left at the distance of half a mile or so from the bridge,--standing upon a low grassy hillock overlooking the city and the broad meadows of the Mohawk with their curious purplish tinge of early summer, and the willowed islands and shores of that lake-like stream, - a square, strucoed house, with a flat, railed roof, bearing upon the front of the building, in iron letters, the date "A.O. 1713." Ancient trees surround the house, some of which may have stood there when Sander Leendertsen's descendants erected the building, within less than thirty years from his death. It is one of the Historic mansions of the State and should not be allowed to perish.

As for the property of Sander Leendertsen in the Smits Vly, it was finally dispoed of by him in the fall of 1675,--the easterly portion to Abraham Lambertsen Moll and the larger western portion, with the original house to Hendrick Vanderwater. Certain adverse claims existed, as it would seem, against this propertyfor in 1674, we find one John Saffin sending a communication to Secrectary Nicoll, complaining that "Henry Vandewater hath seruptitiously obtained a mortgage of old Sander Leendertsen of Albany on the stone house situated in the Smits Vly which was long before made over to, and hath been in the possession of Captain Thomas Willet and now pertains to his heires." He asks that Vandewater be prevented from exposing the premised for sale of otherwise prejudicing the said "heires" till they have an opportunity of protecting their interests. No action, however, seems to have followed this communication, and Vandewater and his family remained in the occupation of the property for many years.

I am trying to determine who the father of Rebecca Lindsay was. Don't know much about her. She was born 1725-1750, not sure if it was in the USA. She married John Cochran (not sure where)and they settled in Lincoln Co., NC. I believe they came to Lincoln after spending some time in Rowan Co., NC. Following the death of her husband John, she remarried to Henry Slinkard. I believe they stayed in Lincoln. If any one knows anything, please let me know.

I am from the Fiji Islands. My father was named after a Reverend William Lindsay who visited Fiji in early 1920s ir 1930s. My great great grand father was a village chief, and at such time the Reverend was visiting our shores preaching Christianity. When my father was born, he was named after him. My father was named Viliame Misilidi, the fijian version of "William Lindsay".

When I grew up in the village no one told me about how my father was named until I was at University when I met a lady who grew up with my father. She told me that her son was named after my father, William Lindsay, who was a preacher. She told me that my father was using the fijian translation name of Viliame Misilidi.

After I returned to Fiji, 3 years of law study, I was suprised to hear that my sister's grand son is named William Lindsay. I have a grandson now and my son named him " Waifa William Lindsay Maopa.

I want to trace and meet this William Lindsay family as the name provides inspiration and good luck to my brothers and our families overal.

I did not know that William Lindsay " Viliame Misilidi" was a religious man preaching the words of god.

Vinaka vakalevu and God Bless you all.

Eroni Maopa

Thomas Lindsay

I'm trying to find out about my great great grandfather, Thomas Lindsay. He was married to Margaret Lynn. I’m told she was born in Glasgow Scotland around 1870. I don’t know what year they were married nor do I know when and where Thomas was born.

Thomas and Margaret had a son, Crawford Lindsay. Crawford was born in Morrisdale Pennsylvania around 1884-1887 (every document I find has different years).

According to marriage records Margaret remarried April 24 1889 to a man from Germany named John James Hemmis. They had children together as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-KC
Susan, you're very welcome. And I so much agree: we both stand on the shoulders of those who have pored over old manuscripts and texts for years, and who bequeathed us their work, and we keep on correcting the mistakes in previous research.

Including, in my case, my own. I spent over 30 years, after all, working painstakingly to find out how my colonial Virginia Lindseys connect to others of that name in colonial Virginia, only to have DNA studies show me that all that work was in vain, since it's now almost certain my Lindseys came to Virginia with the surname Lynch--and that they don't connect in any way to the other colonial Virginia Linds*ys.

Genealogy keeps us humble, since it proves us wrong, very often. But for that, I'm grateful, since it's not a bad thing to remember that I'm far from infallible!

Dear Bill,

Once again, thanks for the kind words.

I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with you to sort out which Lindsey's are yours and which ones are mine. Luckily for us, Spartanburg County land records made it possible to figure out which were which.

Today's genealogists are lucky because so much information is available to help us identify who our ancestors were.

But our task is also difficult because in able to set the record straight, we sometimes challenge long held beliefs.

I hope that we will all be able to continue to move forward with our research, and that we will succeed in finding our early Lindsey ancestors.

Thanks again,

Susan

Susan, as a fellow researcher of pre-Revolutionary upcountry South Carolina Lindsays/Lindseys, I want to say again how much I have appreciated your generosity for some years now as you share your information about the various Lindsay/Lindsey families living in the SC upcountry in that period. You have freely made all of your information about your own group of Lindseys available online to any of us who may want to consult your documents and notes. And you've shared your information freely with me by email for quite some time now.

I appreciate, too, your desire to get things right, vis-a-vis the families you're researching. That seems to me to be a goal we all should be aiming at. I've appreciated your helping me see that I had some of your Newberry Co. Lindseys incorrectly identified as Lindseys belonging to my Spartanburg Co. family. I'm always very happy when anyone who has better records than my own can help me sort out my own mistaken information.

I've found over many years that we learn best of all when we are open to the possibility (the probability, in my case) that we can make mistakes, and when we can revise our mistaken ideas as new, more correct information comes along.

Please know you're appreciated.

Jesse Campbell received a 1771 grant for land on Long Cane Creek that had originally belonged to Zebulon Alexander.

From the South Carolina Archives:

Series: S111001
Volume: 0011
Page: 00093
Item: 002

Date: 11/13/1771

Description: CAMPBELL, JESSE, MEMORIAL FOR 200 ACRES ON LONG CANE CREEK, GRANVILLE COUNTY, SUMMARIZING A CHAIN OF TITLE TO A GRANT TO ZEBULON ALEXANDER OF APRIL 20, 1763.

Names indexed: ALEXANDER, HANNAH; ALEXANDER, ZEBULON; CAMPBELL, JESSE

Locations: GRANVILLE COUNTY; LONG CANE CREEK; SAVANNAH RIVER

Document type: MEMORIAL

In order to find where the land was located, you have to search the A index for Zebulon Alexander:

http://homepage.mac.com/bfthompson/abbeville_colonial_plats/...

The tract was located in Section 6E of the Abbeville plat map. I marked up a small version of the map, and I will attach it.

It can be seen that Jesse Campbell lived just a short distance from Thomas Lindsay on Long Cane Creek.

Susan

To quote your original post:

"...As far as which Samuel is on the Southern Campaighn Revolutionary War pension is wrong. It could be a younger Samuel Lindsey (ay) is the right one. By the way we have the same story in our family history"

This post was not simply a sharing of something that Samuel Lindsey stated in a pension application. Your post went on to state that the wrong Samuel Lindsey had been named as the man who received a pension.

In a later post your wrote:

"Why would I be talking about Samuel Lindsey from Newberry"

In this post you seemed to deny that you had even made the first post.

Then you wrote:

"At least I am not reserching those Lindsey's from Newberry..."

This statement seems to be a put-down of anyone who would be interested in the Newberry County Lindsey's.

I'm not sure what your motivation was in placing the original post if you have no interest in the Newberry County Lindsey's.

I frankly have grown weary of your habit of making posts with no documentation, and with your nonsensical rants when you are pressed to produce facts to back up your statements.
I let my exasperation with your perplexing statements get the best of me.

My reason to post the information about Samuel Lindsey was not for you. It was for other researchers who might be interested in knowing about the information that shows that Samuel Lindsey, son of John Lindsey Sr. and his wife, Elce, was indeed the man who received a pension for his Revolutionary War service.

Linda, you misinterpreted Samuel Lindsey's statement about his childhood. I understand that you thought Samuel was stating where he was born because you were unaware of the meaning of the word infancy as it was used in Samuel Lindsey's time.

Your error in understanding what Samuel Lindsey meant cannot remove the mountain of evidence that shows that Samuel Lindsey of Newberry County, son of John Lindsey Sr. was the only man named Samuel Lindsey living in Newberry County during the Revolutionary War.

In the future, I hope that you will provide documentation along with your statements.

Susan
I am reattaching the image of the signatures of Samuel Lindsey of Newberry County. Part of the caption was cut off of the first one. The signatures actually span from 1783 to 1814.

The first signature, dated 1783, was on Samuel Lindsey's indent for military service under his brothers, Capt. John Lindsey and Lt. Thomas Lindsey.

The last signature was made while Samuel Lindsey was still serving as ordinary of the Newberry County court, and shortly before he suffered a stroke.

Susan

I think that sticking with the facts is the best course to take on the issue of Samuel Lindsey of Newberry County.

The three men who made statements in 1820 for Samuel Lindsey to help him get his pension all stated that they knew Samuel during the Revolutionary War. Because the three men were all residents of present day Newberry County during and after the Revolutionary War, it is safe to assume that Samuel Lindsey lived in the area of present day Newberry County during the Revolutionary War.

One of the men who made an affidavit for Samuel Lindsey was Thomas McCracken. Thomas McCracken stated that he served with Samuel Lindsey under Lt. Gerrard Smith, among other officers.

Thomas McCracken appeared with the Lindsey family in records in Newberry County. Thomas McCracken was one of the appraisers of the 1788 estate of Gerrard Smith (the Lt. mentioned above),who was the husband of Esther Lindsey. Esther Lindsey Smith was Samuel Lindsey's sister. Samuel Lindsey was the bondsman for Esther Lindsey Smith to administer her deceased husband's estate.

Another man who made an affidavit for Samuel Lindsey was Col. John Speake. Col. John Speake was the nephew of Samuel Lindsey, whose sister, Sarah Lindsey, had married Thomas Speake. Sarah Lindsey Speake did not move to South Carolina at the same time as the rest of the family of John and Elce Lindsey. Sarah remained in Virginia until after the death of her husband, ca. 1773. Sarah Lindsey Speake purchased land near the other Lindsey's on King's Creek when she moved to Newberry County.

Col. John Speake stated that he had served with Samuel Lindsey during the Revolutionary War. Speake stated that he first saw Samuel Lindsey as a soldier in 1775, when Speake was too young to have served himself. Col. John Speake also mentioned serving with Samuel Lindsey under Lt. Gerrard Smith (Esther Lindsey's husband). Another officer that Col. John Speake mentioned was Thomas Dugan. Thomas Dugan was a witness to the 1783 will of John Lindsey Sr. (father of Samuel Lindsey).

Col. John Speake also mentioned that he had served with Samuel Lindsey under Col. John Lindsey and Capt. Thomas Lindsey. Col. John Lindsey and Capt. Thomas Lindsey were brothers of Samuel Lindsey.

After the war, in 1788, Samuel Lindsey sold the land on King's Creek that his father, John Lindsey, had given Samuel in his 1783 will. Samuel Lindsey's wife, Elizabeth, signed a release of dower. The deed mentioned that the land had been willed to Samuel Lindsey by his father, John Lindsey Sr.

There was but one Samuel Lindsey on the 1790 census for Newberry County.

In 1794, Samuel Lindsey again sold the land that he had inherited from his father. Charles Crenshaw, the 1788 purchaser, was not happy with how the original deed was worded, so Samuel resold the land. Crenshaw had James Lindsey (Samuel's brother) also sign the deed because he was worried that James Lindsey might somehow have rights to the land as an heir of John Lindsey Sr. In the deed it was stated that the resale of the land was to put an end to all disputes regarding title to the land.

Samuel Lindsey and his wife Elizabeth continued to buy and sell land in Newberry County throughout the 1790's and up until the time that Samuel Lindsey suffered a stroke in 1815. In 1818, Samuel Lindsey signed a document (with an x) which allowed Elizabeth Lindsey to act as a Femme Sole in business transactions.

In Oct of 1802, Samuel Lindsey sold land in Newberry County to Simon T. Shermon, with Elizabeth Lindsey releasing her dower rights. Later in 1802, a newspaper announcement appeared in the Charleston Times that Esther Lindsey, second daughter of Capt. Samuel Lindsey of Newberry County had married Simon T. Sherman on 15 Nov. 1802.

Simon T. Sherman died by early 1811, and Esther Lindsey Sherman married Isaac Lindsey, the son of Thomas Lindsey (brother of Samuel Lindsey).

When Elizabeth Lindsey died in Newberry County in 1827, her probate records included a list of her children. The list included Esther Lindsey, wife of Isaac Lindsey.

John Lindsey, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Lindsey, administered her estate. In order to get bondsmen for the administration, John Lindsey used Samuel Lindsey's land as collateral. The tract that John Lindsey used as collateral was a parcel that Samuel Lindsey had purchased in Newberry County in 1805. The 1805 deed included Wade Lindsey as a witness. Wade Lindsey was also listed as a son in the probate records of Elizabeth Lindsey.

John Lindsey, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Lindsey, married a cousin, Elizabeth Lindsey. Elizabeth Lindsey was the daughter of Caleb Lindsey. Caleb Lindsey was the son of Col. John Lindsey (Samuel Lindsey's brother).

According to author John Belton O'Neall,( pg. 83 in the Annals of Newberry County) Samuel Lindsey was the ordinary of the Newberry County Court from 1799 until he had his stroke in 1815.

So it appears that there was but one man named Samuel Lindsey who lived in Newberry County who could have been the soldier of the 1820 pension record.

Linda Green misinterpreted the statement of Samuel Lindsey regarding living in South Carolina during his infancy. Linda was not aware of the usage of the term in the era in which Samuel Lindsey lived. Samuel was using the term to mean childhood (as was common in 1820), and not as today's meaning of babyhood.

Source documents for all of the information I have posted can be found on this web page for Samuel Lindsey:

http://mimpickles.com/lindsey/south_carolina/newberry/samuel...

I don't believe that there is any evidence that there was a second man named Samuel Lindsey living in Newberry County during the Revolutionary War and up until 1820 when Samuel applied for a pension.

I am attaching an image with numerous signatures of Samuel Lindsey of Newberry County. Dates for the signatures range from 1783 to 1808. The signatures all match, and they show that they were all for the same man.

I hope this information proves useful in identifying the man named Samuel Lindsey who lived in Newbery County during the Revolutionary War.

Susan

Susan, you have said some more stuff. Why would I be talking about Samuel Lindsey from Newberry, however infancy was a factor in what I wrote. Who are you to tell me what to do. At least I am not reserching those Lindsey's from Newberry nor will I say they were related. What story have is something I will not share with you. Unlike you I did not do a website on those Lindsey's from Newberry. I don't want to confuse people with the two Lindsay (ey) family.

Susan, as always you are a very unkind lady. You do not know what documents I have, but you like using my inf. when you did the Abbeville, Lindsay didn't you? By the way those Bible records has been published and it was not by me, but the DAR many years ago.
Excuse me, but I thought everything in our research is the modern day terms. Since I have talked to you, you have tried to dismiss my Lindsay's as being part of the Revolutionary War. You made a statement that Thomas Lindsay (the father was too old, I disagree with you and the younger one was too young. I have seen some that were younger than him.

Your dictionary is probably a modern one, and it does not contain definitions from the time period in which Samuel Lindsey lived.

Here is a link to a website that has information for genealogists about legal terms from the eighteenth century:

http://www.genfiles.com/legal/legalage.htm

"Legal Age

This is a subject that, in my experience, is misunderstood by most family genealogists. What follows is generalized, and is intended to provide an introduction for the use of amateur genealogists.[1]

Under the common law, full majority was reached at the age of 21. Anyone under 21 was legally an infant. Only persons who had reached majority could perform certain legal actions..."

I am attaching a portion of page 64 of the book "Newberry County Minutes of the County Court 1785 - 1798", by Silas Emmett Lucas. Page 64 contains one of the numerous references to children under the age of 21 as infants. You will see that the two "infants" who went to court in 1788 were old enough to request the guardians who were appointed to oversee their estates.

Also, I am attaching an image from a portion of a different Rev. War pension application in which the terms childhood and infancy are used interchangeably. The portion is from the Rev. War pension application of Thomas Rutheford:

http://southerncampaign.org/pen/r9114.pdf

Page 3 of the pdf file contains the terms infancy and childhood. I have highlighted them on the attachment.

It seems that you take offense when you are asked to produce source documents to back up the statements that you are making. I don't expect you to produce the documents because they simply don't exist.

It seems irresponsible to me to make a post with claims about Samuel Lindsey if you do not have any proof of what you are claiming.

If you have any evidence at all that Samuel Lindsey of Newberry County was somehow related to the Lindsay family of Abbeville County, please make it available for other researchers to scrutinize.

If you have any evidence at all that Samuel Lindsey of Newberry County was a different man other than the son of John and Elce Lindsey, please make it available for other researchers to scrutinize.

If you do not have the information that you have referred to by simply stating that "By the way we have the same story in our family history", then please refrain from making statements about Samuel Lindsey of Newberry County
