Edward Linley or Lindley

Edward Linley (Lindley) was born 1760, possbly in Bitterley. He was married to Susannah who died in 1821 and to Sarah who he married in the same year. Sarah out-lived him and married Jabez Benfield. When he died in 1834 he was living in Coleford, Gloucestershire.
Does anyone have any information on his parents, wives maiden names etc.
He is my 4x Great Grandfather and I would like to know what brought him from Bitterely to Coleford.
Thanks!

Great to hear from you. You must be Louisa Janes great granddaughter??? My grandmother was Louisa Janes sister Rosina and my mum also called Rosina was Louisa Victorias cousin. Luton springs to mind as I remember my mum saying often Louis from Luton. I hope I am barking up the right tree? Its great to hear Victor is alive and well.
May be able to throw some light on 2 of ESR sisters. Eleanor married a J Hughes. Sarah died aged 3 months. The other three can't get anything but as I was researching the Linley name I did not worry too much.

Did not know about Eleanor having to put her children in an orphanage that must have been awful. I went to Stourport records library too and researched ESR on old film that was a tedious 2 hours. I have been researching the Linley tree on and off for 20 ish years. Uncle Stanley got me interested because of this Linley of Bath thing, so a cousin called Barbara started the research and I took over. When Uncle died I stopped the research, then started again by going to Stourport to prove or disprove the Linleys of Bath theory. I too do not believe that we are related to that talented rich family.
I have some very old family photos and possibly some information on the other sisters and brothers of Louisa Janes that I willing to share with you, just let me know
Kind Regards
Gillian (Barry is my hubby)

Yes, Louisa Victoria Merry did have 1 son, Victor George Edward Baylis (my father, still alive & kicking)& he had a son & a daughter, both with children, and I also have 3 grandchildren.

I also have a very extensive tree built up of all the linley descenants. The furthest I can get is Edward & Hannah Linley who had a son Edward b 1761 in Stourport on Severn. He married Susannah Randall 27 Feb 1788 in Stourport. Susannah b Dec 1765 in Salwarp, Worcs, parents Samuel & Susannah (ag labs).

Edward S R Linley was a painter & decorator, and my thinking is that he was employed by 'the big house' & brought to London to do up the London house, then stayed. Either that, or he got passage on canal boats via the Severn & Grand Union Canal. Because this is all pre-1841, I can't trace any of his 5 sisters in London, and I couldn't find anything in the Stourport PRs (literacy did not seem too common & the name variations were difficult).

I'm also pretty sure this family has *** all to do with the Linleys of Bath! That is a very time-worn path that has been trod many times, with nothing to show but wishful-thinking.

Barry...I believe you wanted to know about Sid Buckman...He married Hilda Winstanley, but had no children..far too busy playing jazz here & in the US. After Wm Charles died, Eleanor had to put the children into an orphanage. While there, Sidney learned to play the trumpet. Later, when the family was back together, he joined the band of Roy Fox, a famous American bandleader, with whom he worked on and off for many years playing many prestigious venues including the Palladium. He also joined the Billy Cotton Band for some years. Mum & Dad used to follow him in the early days when he was playing locally in the East End.

Harriet was married to George Lindley. She is shown on an official document as the aunt of my grandfather, Joseph Britton. At the time of the document, around 1900, she was living in Eton Street, Holbeck, Leeds. That is all I know for certain. She was originally Harriet Hughes, who married Charles Saxton who I think died, and then she married George Lindley. As yet I do not know the connection to the Brittons, be it on my grandfather's maternal or paternal side. This is what I am trying to research. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
Hi Sandra,

Hope this message finds you well.

Apologies for the delay in my reply, I never check my home page and I missed your reply all this time.

On checking I cannot locate a Harriet, thats not to say there isn't one. Looks like Linley was a fairly popular surname. The most obscure names and you seem to find 10 of them!!

I am 'branching out' on the Linley side and going further with all the connected relatives. So I have created a Linley tree solely dedicated to Linley surname, that way my main tree Padgett, won't get too too busy.

If I come up with anything I will write again.

Kind regards
Catherine

I look forward to hearing from your friend privately.
I found a letter from a cousin who was researching the Linleys in the 1980's. THe conclusion was that through Nicolas the family eventually died out so the next question
was our Linley line descended from one of Thomas's brothers or an uncle? It could be that the famous Linleys went to Bath and the other branch came down to London can't make the link yet.
Also Samuel the one who had a fever abroad ship was supposed to have been looked after Emma Hart(Lady Hamilton).
I spoke to my friend recently and I was completely wrong about Victor's daughter's. Both are still very much alive, apologies for any offence or distress caused. Also my friend and I will be meeting up and working on together on family research online on Monday evening so that may be a good time to put you in touch with her, as she also thought it would be a good idea.
With regard to the Linley's of Bath, the book about them is available in full on google books and I had a read through and picked out the genealogical info. Thomas Linley b1733 in Badminton married in 1752 Mary Johnson. They had 12 children:
George Frederick bapt 1753 - d. young?
Elizabeth Ann bapt 1754 and d 1792 (TB) , married Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
Thomas bapt 1756 and drowned in 1778 aged 22.
Mary bapt 1758 and d 1787 (consumption), who married Richard Tickell.
Thurston bapt 1759 - buried 1763.
Samuel bapt 1760 and d. 1778 (fever on board ship).
William Cary bapt 1761 and prob. buried
Maria bapt 1763 and d. 1784 (consumption).
Ozlas (Ozias?) Thurston 1765-1831, a clergyman.
Jane Nash and Charlotte (Twins) bapt 1768.
and William bapt 1771 and d 1835.
Thomas and Mary's only grandchildren were via daughters and therefore there are no further Linley descendants.

I am taking one at a time and trying to find further siblings.
Actually I was going to ask to end the conversation about my friends close relatives too, there's every chance they may read this board themselves one day and I don't want to identify them or as you say air family problems. Maybe if my friend consents I could put you in email contact with them?
I may have got it all wrong re Victor's daughters any road.
On a completely different note I found another child of Edward S R Linley and Eliza Legassicke by searching the London Baptisms, David Lawrence Linley who I hadn't discovered before. Checking on BMD I have his birth in 1879 and his marriage in 1908 (Though I haven't identified his spouse yet). Also I tried tracking descendants for Louisa Jane Linley and Victor Merry and found they had a daughter Louisa Victoria Merry b 1910 who married in 1922 George A H Baylis, no Baylis children though as far as I can tell.

Hello again, yes you are on the right track with the Linleys of Bath. What I am worried about is the fact that you believe one of Victors daughters is no longer with us I do not want to enter into any family "enstrangements", so if I may until your Linley friend clarifies her situation I will say no more about my Linley relatives. Please do not feel offended its just that I feel protective towards them.

Well to the best of my knowledge one of Victor's daughters has passed away in recent years and the other is no longer in touch with the family, though I will double check with my friend when I see her. I've checked all my notes and realised that I haven't done any work on the issue of daughters, just the male line of Linley so any other info is gratefully recieved. What I'd really like to find out is more about the earliest known ancestor Edward Samuel Randle Linley who married Maria Susannah Iscape Chivers in 1835, he is born in Stourport, Worcestershire as far as I can tell in either 1805 or 1810, but I can't find anything more despite the distinctive names involved, I can't even find any complete families of Linley's in the general area which makes me think his parent's were just passing through Worcestershire when he was born. Also I heard from my friend that she is descended from the Linley's of Linley Hall in Shropshire and I've read, on here I think, that they are linked to the Linley's of Bath but have found no proof of either. In fact there are no known surviving male line descendants of the Linley's of Bath.

Hi, I'd definately be interested. For a start I have 10 children of Edward Samuel Randell Linley and Eliza Mary Ann Legassicke: Louisa Jane, Clara Maria, Maud Beatrice, Edward Henry Chivers, Ellen (Or Eleanor/Helena?) Eliza, Rosina Elizabeth, Albert Edward, Herbert William (Or William Herbert?), Samuel Randell and Victor Emmanuel C. Victor is the grandfather of the friend I'm doing this for. I believe that 9 of the 10 were married, only Samuel who died aged 31 remained unmarried. And I believe that 8 of the 9 who married left at least some issue, Herbert and his wife Elizabeth Maria Claxton being the couple that didn't.
Edward H C had four children, Edward Charles, Alfred, Ruby Ada and George H. Albert Edward had four also, Lydia Lucy, May Florence, Elizabeth E and Albert E. And Victor had 2 daughters, Edna J and Marion. Edward Charles son of Edward H C had 3 children, Stanley E, Joyce I and Hazel J. I can supply more details if anyone wants them.

Thanks for this. Annie Robb married William Richard West - these are my great grandparents. They had 2 children, Doris (My gran) and Cyril. Nancy is my great aunt. My late mom traced Sarah Linley's lineage back to Bath in the 1700's but they seemed to be a well known family back then so the info was readily available. She has documented it. I will try and find it put the detail up here or get a copy of it to you.

Hi there. I'm currently tracing this Linley family on behalf of a friend who's descended from Sarah's brother Edward Samuel Randell Linley's 2nd marriage to Eliza Mary Ann Legassick(e).
I don't have a great deal of info about your branch yet but what I have is here.
Sarah Susanna Linley, dau of Edward Samuel Randell Linley and Maria Susanna Chivers, bapt 4th Nov 1838 St Dunstan Stepney. Married in Sep Quarter 1861 in Poplar to David Ogilvie Robb.
Their children were
James David Linley Robb (b Sep Q 1862 Poplar, marr. Dec Q 1887 in W. Ham to either Ellen Kupke OR Mary Tidbury)
Maria Agnes Robb (b Mar Q 1865 Poplar, marr. Jun Q 1897 in Romford to either James McAndrews OR Walter Frederick Wiseman)
Edward Ogilvie Robb (b Mar Q 1867 Hackney, marr. Jun Q 1896 in London C to Ada Annie Conway)
David Robb (b Mar Q 1869 Poplar, may have marr. Jun Q 1897 in Poplar either Annie Ellen Scott OR Ellen Groom)
Annie Robb (b Mar Q 1872 Poplar, may have marr. Dec Q 1898 in Romford either Carrington Alling Richardson OR William Richard West)
Sydney (Sidney) Howard Robb (b Jun Q 1874 in Poplar, marr. Jun Q 1906 in W. Ham to Nellie Beatrice Weston)

Sydney and Nellie had at least two children.
Joan L Robb (b Jun Q 1913 in Edmonton)
Nancy C Robb (b Jun Q 1916 in Romford)

Hope some of this helps, and I'll post more on here if I find it out. Would you happen to know anything about the origins of Sarah's parents? I have found their marriage on 9th July 1835 at St John At Hackney but can't trace either ones birth or family prior to the marriage.

In Connection with Zillah Linley.
Looking at your tree Catherine it made me run back over my info as an Edward Linley (my tree) was boarding with the Ibbotson family in Leeds in 1881. Zillah is such an unuausal name - it turns out Zillah Linley married Philip Ibbotson in 1870 so it could be the same person - and perhaps explains why Edward Linley was boarding - a distant relative?.
Thanks for the link to another investigation.
Rob

You havn`t given any dates, but there are a couple of Alfreds in the tree, but none from Sheffield.

Anita

Good detective work on your EG Phippard, must have been very exciting. Have you tried contacting the local history society for the area you are interested in, they generally know where the registers for the various churches in their area are kept and if they are complete. Good luck with your search. Alice

Hi, thanks for message, i think that probably it is the case that a lot of dates and spelling of names are wrong, which does make it slightly difficult to find people. My ggrandmother for example called herself Grace Phippard - i could not find her anywhere! - also her age was wrong, even on her marriage certificate she said she was 24 in 1907 when in fact she was 29 years old. I eventually found her she was called Eliza Grace Phippard and she was born in 1878. The person i am trying to get details for died before 1837, so im not sure how to go about getting a marriage certificate. His name was John Lindley (Linley) and he married at All Hallows Church, Gedling, Notts 13th November 1775 to Sarah Savage.
Hi, I don't know the answer to all your questions, I'm pretty new to this, but I was having a lot of difficulty finding my GG grandfather's death [Charles Linley of Elsecar Yorkshire]. He was alive in 1901 but no trace of his death until I tried Lindley. I have sent for the certificate but I'm pretty sure it's him, I have also found their name misspelled in one census entry. Hope this helps.

Linleys of Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire

Hi,
Wondered if anyone could offer any advice, i have managed to trace my branch of Linley's on my mothers father's side back to 1750. They all came from Burton Joyce and have found many of them in Burton Joyce St Helen's cememetry. However, i know when my 3 x great grandfather died - 15th November 1913 his name being Elijah Linley, however can find no record of his death. He was Parish Clerk for 68 years at St Helens Church, Burton Joyce which has been well documented and there is lots of information on him inlcuding in a book of notable people made up from Parish registers, so im confused as to why i cannot find details of death certificate etc. Also want to try and go about getting further back fron 1750 but not sure how. I know that my 5 x great grandfather came to Burton Joyce mid eighteenth century but want to find out where he came from. He married at All Hallows Church, Gedling 13th November 1775. How do i go about getting a marriage certificate? Also if anyone has perhaps a connection with my family please get in touch if you are reading this.

Regards
