Obit of Mrs. J. Harr (Jane Parkhurst) Linn 1909

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. J. HARR (JANE PARKHURST) LINN
MARCH 12, 1909

Died, at the family home in Piper City on Saturday morning, March 6, Mrs. Jane Parkhurst Linn, wife of J. H. Linn. Mrs. Linn's maiden name was Jane Parkhurst. She was the daughter of Joel and Fedella Parkhurst, and was born near Yorkville, Kendall county, Ill., on Nov. 7, 1841, and was the eldest of a family of four children, all of whom have preceded her to the home beyond. Mr. and Mrs. Linn were united in the holey bonds of wedlock in 1859, and in 1865 they moved to their farm home northeast of Chatsworth where they gained competency and retired from active life in 1887, when they moved to their comfortable home in Piper City to enjoy the fruits of their labors. To this union were born eleven children of whom but six are living: Orin P. and Mrs. Lora L. Clark, of Beaconsfield, Iowa; Girden F. and Mrs. Ida L. Reynolds, of Piper City; James Eugene, Vandallia, Mo.; and Mrs. Fidelia Crandall, of Cullom, who with the husband and father, are left to mourn their irreparable loss. Mrs. Linn was converted in 1806 and joined the M. E. church in Chatsworth transferring her membership to this place when she moved here. Mrs. Linn was a beautiful Christian character, quiet and unassuming, but always ready with a kindly smile and generous act. Fifty years she and Mr. Linn were permitted to journey side by side down the pathway of life but she has left him to finish the journey alone, and while they all sorrow for the one who has left them, they sorrow not as those who have no hope for she left behind a testimony that all was well with her. All the living children were present at the funeral.

Obit of J. Grant Linn 1903

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

J. GRANT LINN
DECEMBER 11, 1903

The people of this community were greatly shocked on Monday, when word was received in town that Grant Linn had died at this home just north of the Chatsworth tile factory. Few of even his nearest friends were aware that his condition was critical, and the exact cause of his sudden demise seems hard to learn. He was the eldest son of Joseph H. Linn, of Kankakee, for years a resident of Charlotte township, and was a young mean held in high esteem in this community.
The following obituary notice was furnished by Rev. F.N. Wright, the pastor in charge of the funeral:
Joseph Grant Linn, who was born in Kendall county, Ill., Aug. 12, 1865, died at his home near Chatsworth, Ill., on Dec. 7, 1903, aged 38 years, 3 months and 25 days. He moved to this community when quite young, with his parents, and lived here until the time of his death. He was converted at the age of 17 and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Chatsworth. Among those who accompanied him to the alter at that time, was a young lady, who a few years later became his wife, and today is in deep mourning for him who helped her so much to live a Christian life. In church work Bro. Linn was constantly active. He held several official positions and was a pillar in the church. All who knew him will join in asserting that he was loyal to his God, and died a consistent, consecrated Christian.
On April 11, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Clark. To them were born two daughters, Myrtle and Elsie, who with the wife survive him. Other near relatives who survive him are a father and two sisters, living in Kankakee, one brother in Pullman, and two brothers here. Those who went on before him were a mother-in-law, Mrs. Clark, buried only a little more than two weeks ago; a mother who died last August, a sister who died 16 years ago and three brothers who died when small.
Brother Linn was not only a good Christian, but a kind and loving husband and father and the kind of a neighbor we all like to have about us. All who knew him loved him. May we all live to meet him in glory. He was sick but a little over a week and many did not know he was seriously ill until his death was announced.
Funeral services were conduct at the M. C. Church by Rev. F.N. Wright, assisted by Rev. Eldridge, of the Baptist church, and Rev. DeClark, of Cullom, on Wednesday afternoon. Interment was made in the family lot at the Chatsworth cemetry.

Hi and thank you for replying! This is very interesting! My great Grandfather was Charles Linn, son of James and Isabella. He was born in America but came to live in Scotland, dont know when or why. Would love to find out more about his siblings and my American relations. I too have reached a brick wall in my research. Look forward to hearing from you. Regards Irene

Sharon -- We are distant cousins. I list Robert Bruce Linn as the son of Henry S. and Casander Narcesses (Ferguson) Linn. He was born Dec. 22, 1870 in Dexter, Dallas Co., IA and died Mar. 31, 1937 in Polk Co., IA. He was buried in Jordan Cemetery, West Des Moines, Polk Co., IA. He and Lillian Belle Mosher had seven children: an infant daughter, Lloyd Edwin, Carl Edwin, Leonard Bruce, Viola Bell[e], Donald Clair and George Bernard Linn. The curious part is that I don't list any of those brothers' names. Robert had ten siblings: Aaron Alexander, Austin Leander, William Hugh "Billy", Franklin A., Olive Ann[a] "Donnie", Mary, Ira Newton, Henry "Scott" and George Miller Linn. Email me for more... limrixman@aol.com

Hi:

I THINK I am family of James and Belle. My great-great grandfather was Lee Evert Lynn. I am thinking that he could be the "Leon" I see one census record. I have been hitting a lot of brick walls with this part of my tree. I have seen Lee's last name spelled differently on many documents. My Mom's name is Lynne after her grandmother's maiden name of Lynn. I know Lee lived with his daughter Miriam (my great grandmother) when he was a widower. I don't have much information to share, but I'd love to exchange any information with you!

I have found that some Linn genealogists show George Linn's wife as "Sarah Smith." However, Evangeline Linn Halleck's "Descendants of George Linn" (1941) does not say who George's wife was, but rather says:

"The name of the wife of George Linn is unknown. Family tradition says that after the death of George his widow married a man named Gault and settled at New Braintree, Mass. (Worcester county) We know that her son John Linn was 'restored to health' at New Braintree after the revolutionary war, so this is quite probable."

Does anyone know what proof there is that George's wife was named Sarah Smith?

I have traced these same family members and still would like to know more.

I knew of a Patrick from Ireland, but did not know the original name was O'Linn. Here is another tid-bit I find interesting but unconfirmed as yet:

There was a group of 7 brothers named "Linn" that immigrated from Ireland in the 1700's. They all settled in Pennsylvania. As far as anyone could find out, this group of brothers were the fellows from whom all the Linn's in this country started from.

I have some old pictures to share.
George H. Linn, born 1851 in TN. (Married to Joella Davis)

Get ready! There's lots of same first names from two different Linn families... That I think are actually connected.

My oldest known/confirmed Linn relative is George H. Linn. Per a 1880 Jack, Tx census. He was born in TN in 1851 (city/county unknown) and his unnamed father was born in NC. George H. Linn's wife was Joella Davis (born 1858 in Henderson, TX) George and Joella had lots of kids, including a son named James (born 1878) and a daughter named Temperance (born 1898). (Note: A Linda Stewart, in error, has his name as George N. Linn: I have not been able to contact Linda Stewart. If anyone can help, please let me know.)

I found another (same?) George H. Linn that was also born in 1851 (no other info known about him). His father was James Linn, born in Greensboro, Guilford, NC in 1813. This same James Linn had a brother named George Linn (born 1802) that lived in Wayne, TN. James also had several other children, including a daughter named Temperance (born 1847), and a son named James (born 1855).

I'm hoping to find a stronger link that connects our two Linn families. Any one have that link?

Thank you,

Anthony "Tony" Linn (born 1968 in Oakdale, CA)
Unfortunately, the old castle fell to ruin before any pictures were made. It belonged to the family Lynn of that Ilk, sometimes called Lords of Lynn, whose name was written 7 different ways over a span of 5 centuries. Here's a web page about the family:

http://www.house-of-lynn.com/Lynn_of_that_Ilk.html
I agree with the circumstantial evidence. It does look promising, but it's just that for now. Jeremiah and Mary Ellen's genealogy has been researched extensively by several family members. I don't have all my information on ancestry yet, it's a work in progress. We've been at this for several years and are a close bunch of cousins.

The 1920 census is correct, she was living with Alvin. I don't know why they separated. Jeremiah lived with my great-grandmother Rhoda Francis Lawson Igo. Some say it was because of money, some say she was a mean woman and they didn't get along.

Jeremiah and Mary Ellen met in Covington when he was in the Civil War. They married in Covington right after the war was over. I have the marriage certificates that were included in his Civil War Pension record.

The family story that has been passed down is that Mary Ellen's mother ran a "house in the red-light district" in Covington. Mary Ellen's death cert says her father was a Morgan and I grew up with the story that he was part of Morgan's raiders. Other descendants of Mary Ellen heard the same story growing up. Stories are good but they are just stories.

We'll continue to search and please keep in touch!
Beverly

I think we will have to go with the circumstantial evidence until something else is recovered, The 1900 census states that America has 4 living children. There are death certificates for the three that give Thomas Wilson as their father, Sarah, Martha Jane, and James. She never is shown living with Thomas Wilson on any census but first shown in 1870 with name Wilson. I am distantly related but not directly. I may have found the 1920 census for Mary Ellen in Middletown, Butler county, Ohio, her son Alvin is there too but in a different ward. This is a very large family. I have not looked for marriages in Scott county, Kentucky yet.

Thanks for the census records. I have that information and it isn't conclusive that Mary Ellen was a child of America. Is there a birth record or other documentation that is more concrete?

One thing I did find that is interesting though. Mary Ellen and Jeremiah Lawson are in the 1870 census, Kentucky, Covington, Ward 2. It is the last page of Ward 2. America is listed in Ward 3 on page one. There is a possibility that they lived close together, depending on where Wards 2 and 3 are located.
Are you a descendant of Mary Ellen? I'm the great great grand daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Ellen Lawson.

Brick walls are always so interesting. It would be awesome to break through this one!

Beverly

Henry Cook married Martha Linn

Henry and Martha lived in Luzerne County Pennsylvania in 1850. Henry was born about 1823 to Margaret (Pace) and Daniel E. Cook. Would like more information about the Cooks, as his brother William is my gg grandfather.Does anyone have Henry Cook's obituary from April 1903?
