Well as much as I would like to say that we have a connection... I don't think we do. We have found in the past year that our Alfred Lion(born 1859 in Prussia) was born in Germany and left Germany to come to the US. We have his ship registration so we are sure. And very recently we found his parents names were Samuel and Henrietta Lion, also from Germany. So currently, we have not made any link or indication that this Lion family traveled to England. France, Alsace-Lorraine was in question for sometime... but never England.
Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Thanks Sue

Hello sue,

Well, my problem is that I can't find an Alfred. What I have got is a gggg grandfather named Lyon/Lion Asher who named his first child Alfred, so the name must have meant a lot to him.Lyon was also born in Germany, but he arrived in England sometime betwen 1768 & 1820 (Alfred was born in Nottingham,England), where Lyon settled)There seem to be connections to a Lion/Lyon family who arrived in England around 1800, headed by Leh Lion/Lyon, a jeweller. They wandered around England for a bit, eventually settled in Chatham in Kent for a few years before emigrating to New York between 1841 & 1850.

One of Lyon's sons married & settled in Southampton (a long way to go) & there was a family tree on Ancestry last week which listed an Alfred Asher born c 1800 in Southampton. I emailed the owner &, since then, the tree has been removed !

Thanks for the Post Sue. My Lion root (now Leon for some reason) settled in Pittsburgh, PA. Do you have any relatives of your GG Grandfather? My GGG Grandfather Pfilipp is the one that supposedly was born in Alsace Lorraine around 1800. The only child I know of was my GG grandfather Anton who came to Pittsburgh from Essen, Germany. One of Anton's sons was my great grandfather Christian also listed as coming from Essen.
Thanks, Walt Leon (Lion) warroom11@verizon.net
Hi, My Leon family member, My 3rd great-grandfather and my 2nd great-grandmother, were also originally Lion's and per oral tradition came from Alsace-Lorraine. Matthias Leon/Lion immigrated from Alsace-Lorraine to the USA through Canada in the 1850's. He was a copper miner in the UP of Michigan before settling in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. His parents were Joseph and Anna Katharina Lion. The family was Catholic. Do you think that these lines may be related? I find it very hard to research the name Leon, most of my responses end up being hispanic in Origin, rather than French or German.

Matthias Leon/Lion B. 10 Jul 1834 D. 17 Jul 1887 St. Cloud, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.

Hi Walter!
It is very possible that your Anton is an uncle of my Jules. They are both from Alsace Lorraine, France. Jules was born about 1816 so he could be a brother or nephew to your Anton. I am currently looking into the European ancestry. If I find out any info I will pass it on to you. Hope you will do the same.
I believe that the name Lion was changed to Leon because the French pronounce Lion as "Leon".
Nice hearing from you.

Thank for responding so fast. From marriage and death records of my great grandfather Christian's siblings I learned that Anton (his father) moved around Western Germany final destination Essen. My aunt maintained contact with a descendent of Anton. She sent me a letter back in the 70's indicating that Phillip (Anton's father) was a Frenchman and I have heard Alsace-Lorraine mentioned numerous times by relatives long gone.

Again, thanks for your response.

My email if you choose to reply is warroom11@comcast.net

Walter Lion-Leon

Nothing.
