I recently found a small New Testatment Bible as I was going through a box of books I purchased and would like to see it returned to a member of the Lipford Family.

It has the inscription: presented to Pvt.
Does anyone have any information on this person? He was African American, born around 1810, and listed as living with a white family named Farmer in the 1880 census in Bannister, Pittsylvania Co. VA. He is on the same census page as the Wilson Lipford family, possibly next door.

Hi Christopher,
I'm doing a little research on the Lipfords as well. I've got information going back to Henly Marshall Lipford, b. ~1815, d. ~1865. Many other people have been able to go much further back. How is your research coming along?

Cynthia Lipford

Hi Ray,
I'm interested in what you've been able to discover. Sallie and Albert T had a son named Albert T Jr. Junior had a son named Wallace Bruce, and Wallace was my grandfather. My parents have some medals that were presented to Wallace from the Daughters of the Confederacy because he was a military vet (WWI) who was decended from a Civil War vet (Albert T. Sr, who served with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston). Any information you have found beyond that would really be interesting. Thanks!
Cynthia Lipford

Wow,that letter contains a ton of information. It mentions an ancestor of mine, Henly Marshall Lipford, who married Mary Nelson. Interestingly, the letter states that Henly's (and Dewey's) parents came from Virginia and were of English descent. The family tree I have next to me (which was done by a relative in 1979) says that Henly came from Scotland. I didn't have anything on Henly's parents until now.

Also interestingly, according to family legend, Mary Nelson was a neice of English naval hero Lord Horatio Nelson. Cannot confirm.

Re: South carolina Lipford

Edith I cannot remember if I have replied to this request on the other boards so forgive me if repeating.
Charlotte Rook divorced John George Lipford between 1871-1874. He was staying back in Chester between 1873-1874 so they were definalely seperated by that time. He then left and went to Marion County, Fl with the youngest son, Walter. The middle son, Charles, stayed with Charlotte and I cannot figure out what happened to the oldest boy, John. On the 1910 census Charlotte claimed that she had 8 kids - 5 were living. John may have died young. He was not with her and Charles on the 1880 census.
John George remarried about 1876 to Amanda Joyner in Marion County, Fl. They had 2 daughters before splitting up in the early 1880's.
In 1889 Charles and his mother Charlotte moved to Clay County, FL where Charles's family remained. Charles died in the early 1920's.
On the 1880 census, Walter (age 9), was living in a boarding house in Marion County, Fl in the home of James and Elizia Carter. James Carter was a relative of John George Lipford's mother, Elizabeth Carter. Before that he was living in a family setting with John George, Amanda, Alice Louise, and baby Georgia according to our family bible.
Eventually, Walter ended up in Montgomery, AL where he worked as a policeman. He had 3 children. He died between 1830-1840 in Montgomery.
We still cannot figure out what happened to John George Lipford, when he died, or where. The last we know is that he was on the run for shooting a man over the sale of some mules in the early 1880's.
Charlotte filed a pension application in Clay County, FL (it was misfiled as Lifford) on him in 1907 to which she claimed that she "heard" he died in Mississippi in 1876. That was obviously wrong on her part but she may have been intentionally misled.
If you have any leads on the son, John, please let me know. Georgia
Wilson and Eliza were one of the 4 African American couples listed in the 1870 Pittsylvania County VA census. Anderson and Abigale were another of the 4 couples. I think Wilson and Anderson were roughly the same age. Could they be related? Possibly brothers or cousins.? I don't know who Wilson or Eliza's parents were. I have checked the 1860 slave tables that I have found, and did not see their names. I am a great grand daughter of Wilson and Eliza, and a granddaughter of their son Charles Mesach born around 1877.

Who were his parents? Was it Anderson & Abigall if so
I will share this information that I have. I believe I have some other marriage certificates on Lipford's that I can share. On the census the child listed as Angie is Angeline Lipford Griggs from Falls Creek, VA. As I followed the census I saw her name take form. My grandmother, her daughter Mariah Griggs married my granddad Spurgeon Carter. I have Mariah's death certificate that list her mother's name as Angeline Lipford and father John Griggs. She died when my dad was 3 in 1/1924 in Washington, DC where the lived. I also have Mariah and Spurgeon's marriage certificate. They had two kids Lester Richard Carter (my dad) and Anna Carter. Angeline and John raised these children. Both are deceased now I have birth and death certificates. Lester Carter married Helen Regina Carter and they had six kids Lester Jr., Ralph, Michael, Gregory (deceased), Martin and Lynda (me). Aunt Anna had one daughter named Doris Carter Gause.

I really want to be in touch more people have information on this Lipford's. I have no idea what happen to Angeline and John.
Janice,
Hi. I would love what you can share on the Lipfords too. I am a ggg-granddaughter of Anthony Lipford and Anna C Adkins.
I descend from their daughter:
Milley Carolina Lipford and John Montgomery Cox (gg-grand)

Then from their daughter:
Mary Octavia Cox & Thomas Bynum Walsh (g-grand)

Then from their son:
Robert Clinton Walsh & Minnie Laws Walsh (grandparents)

Then their daughter:
Linda Helen Walsh & James Ira Hawkins (parents)

Anything you can offer would be very appreciated! I am also very interested in photos and birth/death/marriage certificates. I also have some of these same items that I can share with you. I will see what you send and I will send anything that I have on this family that you don't have. I have a copied photo of an old tin-type photo that my mother owns of Anthony & Annie sitting side -by-side holding their bibles, as you probably know that Anthony was a preacher in Wilkes County, NC. I have other family photos, a letter that Annie wrote in 1896 to her son Felix, and marriage/death certificates. If you already have any of these items, let me know and I will only send what you need.

a cousin,

Lora Ann Hawkins-Smith

John Daniel Lipford married Martha Ann Hiler. She was born Sept 24, 1846 in Pittsylvania, VA. Here is her obituary naming children from March 1924. - Donna

The Bee (Danville, Virginia) >
1924 > March > 25 page 1/14
Another Fatal Burning Reported From Ruffin, N.C.

News of another fatal burning reached here last night when it became known that Mrs. J.D. Lipford, an aged woman of the Ruffin, N.C., community perished early Saturday morning from injuries sustained at her home. None was with her at the time she caught fire but it is believed that she was striken with paralysis and fell against a stove, her clothes ignited in that way. The tragic accident took place on Friday morning at 11:30 o'clock and she died early the next day.

Her husband and son did all they could to extinguish the flames and sustained painful burns of their hands in their efforts to save her. She lived for fourteen hours afterward but was unconscious most of that time, but apparently not suffering. Deceased was 77 years and almost six months old. About nine years ago she suffered a stroke of paralyziz from which she had never fully recovered and since then has sustained several light seizures. For the last three years her vitality has so waned that she was practically an invalid.

Her husband, J.P. Lipford; two sons, C.A. Lipford of Mt. Cross, and D.L. Lipford of Mayfield, N.C., and two daughters, Mrs. L.I. King of Bachelors Hall, Va and Mrs. Jettie Ashworth, of Mayfield, N.C. survive. She has 28 grandchildren and 21 great-grand-children.

The body of the aged lady was buried in the family buriel ground near Bachelor's Hall. Rev. R.W.
While searching the archives for the Lipford family message board, I came across this subject in a 2002 message. I am searching for the source of this letter, since it mentions my great-great gramdfather Lewis Rich, and his parents. I would like to find the person who has this letter in their possession, and to find out if they have any other information on our family line. Lipford/Atkins/Rich etc.

Thank you!

Laura,
Hi. My name is Lora Hawkins Smith. I grew up on Elk Creek, in Ferguson, Wilkes Co. Your Lipfords are my family too. I descend from 1. Anthony Lipford & Annie C Adkins - 2. Millie Lipford & John Montgomery Cox - 3. Mary Octavia Cox & Thomas Bynum Walsh - 4. James Ira Hawkins & Linda Helen Walsh - 5. (me).
I would like to talk with you and see where we connect and see if we might have info to share with one another.
I have a copy of a tin-type photo of Anthony & Annie sitting side-by-side holding their bibles...as you might know Anthony was a Lay Preacher. I also have a photo of their daughter - Millie Lipford Cox. Let me know if you're interested in having copies of these photos. I also have a copy of Millie's death cert. and pic.'s of Anthony & Annie's grave stones.

Hope to hear from you,

ldsmomof3@hotmail.com

Lora Hawkins Smith
