Hi Jackie,
During my Lister research, I can say that I have not come across any of my Lister branches settling in Dorset (but that's not to say they didn't or hadn't!).
Should Roberta Lister Jones ever contact me and we share information that would match to your tree, I will contact you again.
Thank you for responding.
Regards,
Maria

Hi Maria,
Have tried to find the posting for Roberta but I am unable to find it, probably because I'm not sure how to use the site.
My John Stirling Lister b 1788 is as far back as I can find for my Lister line. He came to Canada in 1841 as a retired Royal marines Lt and settled in New brunswick. His eldest son (who had 7 first names but went by Thomas) stayed in Devon and raised his family.
If this sounds like Roberta's family please pass my name on to her.
Regards,
jackie

Mmmm, not sure why you have responded on this tread Jackie as I don't see any previous posts from you here regarding Lister's from Yorkshire who emigrated to Canada?

Perhaps the fault lies with me as I should have said I was responding to the initial post by Roberta Lister Jones regarding her grandfather Richard Mowbray Lister. I have calculated that Roberta Lister Jones and I would share a 4 times great grandfather based on the research I have done on my Lister family tree and the brief information that Roberta has given in this thread.

If you believe you are related to the Lister's that Roberta Lister Jones is referring to then I would love to explore this new connection with you.

I have done extensive work on my Lister tree. My father abandoned his family many, many years ago so I never knew about my Lister ancestry until I started my research about 7 years ago. He couldn't tell me anything about his family because he chose to leave us so I set out for myself to discover my roots. I have learnt so much about my Lister family through ancestry.co.uk, buying certificates and building relationships with other distant cousins. I was even able to reconnect with my fathers sister-in-law (an aunt who I had remembered from childhood and cherished) before she sadly died in 2008. God bless her.

Please let me know how you are linked to the Lister's from Yorkshire that Roberta Lister Jones was trying to connect to. I hope that there may be another connection with you.

Maria

Hello,
I am working on my family tree. I have found the trace of William Edward Lister in Roots Web. I am Grandson to Walter Leland Lister. I have gotten a bit confused on the lineage. The notes say that Walter Leland Lister died of falling off a truck. I know my Grandfather died in 2008 and not from a truck. I did see the proper wife listed Elizabeth J. Violette(Betty) I did not however see thier children, Allyn, Terry, Rick, Lori, Sherry and Evans. and Walters brothers and sisters, i.e. Dave Lister(Apple Dave)

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks Jason Lister, son of Allyn Lee Lister
listercrew@yahoo.com

Deb:
I am Harold Greatorex's son. I was born in Meredith (Laconia, actually) NH. My brothers were born in Concord, NH. Harold's mother WAS Ida Lister, who married William R. Greatorex. I believe that William's name was changed from Richard William to William Richard when he was naturalized in 1887.

I am interested in tracing the Lister side of the family back beyond Thomas Lister in Lancashire England. Do you have any information?

Allen Lister marries Maud Phillips, Mobile, Alabama 1911

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper
Saturday, Oct. 21 , 1911:

• "T.A. Hatter, a well known turpentine operator at Pennsylvania, Mobile county, was terribly beaten up Wednesday evening in a fight at that place with Joseph Lister and his two sons, Allen and John Lister. The difficulty came as the aftermath of a misunderstanding which Mr. Hatter had with Allen Lister last week, and it was also an unscheduled feature of a nuptial ceremony in which Lister was the principal factor."

The two families had an argument after Hatter had bought some meat from Lister. The Listers had been in Mobile to witness the marriage of Allen Lister and Miss Maud Phillip, Judge Price Williams, Jr., performing the ceremony. Hatter had happened to be on the same train, and when all met at the train station, the fight broke out, according to Hatter.

Not my line, just sharing.

I've also been looking for his parents for years. My paternal line descends from his son, Cornelius Richard Lister. William's wife Minerva was also surnamed Lister, her father Eliphaz Lister Jr., Eliphaz Sr. said to have been born in KY. However, despite looking for years & seeking others researching this line, I've found no related linkage between these two Lister families ... other, of course, than the marriage of William & Minerva. Contact me privately at Mojavedl@verizon.net (please, only if you know you are definitely related to this line).
Darlene Lister
Lancaster, Calif.

I am the gg granddaughter of William Henry Harrison Lister. I have been trying to find his parents for several years. Does anyone have information about him?

He told his family that he was ophaned by the age of 10 or 12.
He also told about hiding a horse in the house during the civil war so it wourld not be taken and because the confederates took stuff from the store he joined the union side.

I have the following facts about him:

Date of birth is 11-27-1842 in Kentucky.
Date of death is 10-14-1901 in Clinton county, Missouri
He enlisted in the 19th Kentucky Inf. in Harrodsburd, Ky Nov. 1861. Deserted 3-4 months later.
He also was in the Missouri Calvery, 1st & 7th Regements.
He is listed in the 1870 Census for Davis county, Iowa living a few houses down from his future wife's family.
He married Minerva Lister in Davis county, Iowa on 9-28-1871.
I found that he has lived in Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri.

If anyone has found his parents or has pictures of him or Minerva please let me know.

Hi Elaine

The only record I have of Thomas' father's name is John Lister, occ engineer, from Thomas and Gertrudes marriage certificate, the witnesses were Gertrudes father and sister, so cannot verify that this is the correct name.

This name was also used as my Grandfathers fathers name on his marriage certificate even though his mother was never married and we know that his fathers surname was actually Davison (the origin of my Grandfathers middle name) and that he was my Grandmothers employer. I am hesitant to use names from one source without another record to verify as this can send one off on the wrong track.

Rachael

Hi Elaine

Thanks you for your help.

Gertrude was listed as married in 1901, she was at her sisters house with Ethel, I have this record. The records I am missing for Gertrude are the 1881 and 1911 census'.

Ernest married Edith Dann in 1910 and they had 1 daughter that I know of Irene b. 1912.

I have the records for Ernest and Ethel in the 1911 census, but not for Gertrude or Thomas as I ran out of credits. If you could give me more information it would be appreciated. It is likely that Gertrude you mention is my GG Grandmother as she was also a housekeeper in 1901.

I am more interested in Thomas and Gertrude's location in 1881 as it is puzzling that no record of them seems to exist on the 1881 census. I am also interested in finding records of Thomas prior to their marriage in 1878, these are proving as elusive as his whereabouts in 1881.

Rachael

Is Gertrude still listed as married in 1901?

1911 census:

I found an Ernest Lister - age 29 married to Edith DANN Dec 1910 Leeds 9b 680 living at 8 Rillbank Place Leeds.

Ethel - a housekeeper age 24 living with the Davison family at 80 St James Sq Leeds.

A Thomas Lister b Leeds age 55 was a visitor at the Thompson family (who came from Leeds)in Islington.

Gertrude LESTER (although it looks like LISTER on the original) a housekeeper married age 53 was a resident at Leeds Union Infirmary, Beckett St Leeds

If you think any of these may be your family I will send more details.

I am seeking any information on my GG Grandfather Thomas LISTER all records I have found have him in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. I have hit a dead end and desperately need assistance.

All I have found is:

1. Marriage to Gertrude ROBINSON on 5 August 1878 parish church, St Georges Parish, Leeds, registered Jul-Aug-Sept quarter 1878, 9b p484. Thomas was 23 and a silversmith, Gertrude 21. Thomas' father is recorded as John LISTER, Occ engineer.

2. 1891 census (RG12, Piece 3707, Folio 59, PG 31, Schedule No 185) Thomas and Gertrude are recorded as born in Leeds, Thomas abt 1856 and Gertude abt 1858. They were at 48 Leighton Lane, Leeds. Thomas was employed as a jewellers assistant. They had 2 children Ernest 9 and Ethel 4

3. 1901 census Ethel and Gertrude were at Gertrude's sisters (Annie Elizabeth CHAPMAN) at 27 Little Woodline Street, Leeds, (Piece 4239, Folio 134, Page 15, Schedule No. 96). I have not found anything for Thomas and one possible record for Ernest.

I have found no record of Thomas or Gertrude on the 1881 census, I have found most records for Gertrude before her marriage.

Any help on this would be appreciated.
Am researching Martha Hurt who was married (???) or lived with John (???) Lister in 1860 in Pickaway County, Ohio. Two children: Nancy J. and William A. Did he die as a POW in Danville, VA prinson in December 1863? Where were John and Martha married and/or divorced? She married Obed Harrison 1 May 1862 before John enlisted in Co. F, 90th Infantry Regiment Ohio in July 1862.
