Can anybody throw some light on my maternal grandmother?
I have had no luck finding her birth record or those of her marriage or death. She married my grandfather Herbert William Litten presumably about 1923. Her children were my mother Marjorie Doreen (1927) and Frederick John (known as John) (1924). She died of pernicious anaemia in about 1934. They lived in Devises and Swindon, Wiltshire.

The Litten Family Name is German my friend.
let no mistake be about that.
it means wild or grim.
i know this......because i am german.
and my name is Bruce Litten.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Origin Displayed: German

Where did the German Litten family come from? What is the German coat of arms/family crest? When did the Litten family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The ancient and distinguished surname Litten is probably derived from a Slavic personal name such as "Litomir," "Litoslav," or "Litobor." These names are all derived from the Old Slavic "ljutu," meaning "wild" or "grim." Alternatively, the name may be derived from "Littau," the name of a town in Moravia. In this case, it is likely that the progenitor of the name was a native of Littau who had settled in another region.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Littmann, Litmann, Littman, Litman, Littmeyer, Litmayer, Littmeier, Litte, Littig, Litten, Littner, Littau, Litt, Littrow, Litke and many more.

First found in Silesia, where they contributed greatly to the development of an emerging nation and would later play a large role in the tribal and national conflicts of the area. In later years, the Litten family branched into many houses, each playing a significant role in the local social and political affairs.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: F. S. Littman, who arrived in Baltimore in 1833; Louis Littmann, who sailed from Hamburg Germany to New York in 1850; Conrad Littner, who came to Philadelphia in 1878.
-----------------------------------------------------------
that is just some info for you.
i already know.
because my grandpa is Jack Litten.

Hi Leanne,

The Rebecca Berry (ca 1770-1813) who married my GGGgrandfather Caleb Litton (1768-1824) is the daughter of Thomas Berry (1718-1799) and Esther McClure Ward. Rebecca Berry and Caleb Litton probably married about 1790 in Washington County, Virginia and they had migrated to Hopkins County Kentucky by 1805.

If you haven't already done so, you should check out the Berry Family website.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Eberry/

Good Luck,
Caroline

If his mother, Rebecca Berry, is from Southern Illinois, she may be the daughter of James Berry, an early settler of America, Alexander (but the county lines changed a lot), Illinois. His son (my ancestor), David B Berry, was born about 1814 in Owsley, KY. Below is the info I have on James (and I am seeking more). If you are a descendant or have info, please contact me at 10324495@uvlink.uvsc.edu. thanks.

Berry, James
Born: Late 1700s, VA (Census)
Died: After 1831, America, IL

James Berry, born in Virginia according to his son’s census records, was one of the first settlers in Southern Illinois. The History of Alexander County says that no lots were sold in Trinity and Union County Illinois, but that “James Berry and afterward Colonel H.L. Webb, in about the year 1817, commenced a hotel and commenced a trading and supply business.” Goods were shipped from St. Louis (p 269).
Another entry says that “ . . . the persons who first settled in America (Alexander County) were...James Berry . . .” (p 450).
In 1820 he served on the petit jury in Alexander County (pg 461). In 1829 someone (narrative is in first person and doesn’t say who, but author of the book is William Henry Perrin) joined with James and bought the interest of Gordon, Tunstall & Co, and Nicholas Berthend, including all the real estate on which the town was built. The business “flourished, and we made money.” James kept the “principal hotel . . .” In 1831, James sold his interest in the hotel to the author and moved to America, Illinois, which was the county seat at that time (p 453).
James is buried in America, Illinois.
Is this the same Ruth Litten that married Charles Edwards about 1812 in North Carolina (had children - Jane or Jincy, Charles Newland, Keziah and Phisa or Vicy)? Charles and the children came to Indiana in the 1830's and Charles had remarried so believe that Ruth must have died in NC about that time. Any help appreciated.
Hi Dan,
I have found a little more about the family since that posting. I do have your dad in my files -married Louise Partee, buried at Mt. Joy Cemetary...We are cousins. I have been trying to find out more about the Clearfield Littons. My GGrandfather and Uncles used to go to Clearfield every year for deer hunting season, but the connection between the familys was lost.
In 1889, when her husband Daniel Litton died, Mary Ann Divelbiss Litton moved with her three youngest children from Fulton Co PA to Clearfield Co. PA. These three children were William Granville, Phoebe A. and Daniel. The rest of the children stayed in Fulton Co. The only one I have any info on is Daniel. I know Mary Ann died in Clearfield around 1913, but I havent yet found out where she is buried. I know William is buried at Hillcrest Cemetary in Clearfield, but I dont know who he married. I know that Phoebe married a Richard Fulton. Mary Ann was living with Phoebe Fulton at the time of her death. But I dont know if they had any children.
I would be glad to send you what information I have on the family if you would like it.
Hello Jack,
Harvey Litten was my grandfather and Sis Litten Benjamin was my grandmother. So I think she was your aunt. She had a history listing John H. Litton and Margaret (Ritenour) Litten as her grandparents. Margaret's Father was Wm. Ritenour from Vanderbilt. And Johns parents were John L. Litten and Mary Ann Litten of Fulton County.
John and Mary had six children
1. John H. Litten
2. Ella (m. william Golden)
3. Sadie (m. Lemuel Millott)
4. William
5. Leona? (m. Richard Fulton)
6. Daniel - it says West Decatur after his name

My orignal info seemed to imply that he was TN. But most recently it appears from what I have, he came from KY. Census records in IL show his wife came from TN.

How are you reated? I am the gr gr gr grandaughter of Solomon and Adah ~ through their daughter Armilda (w/o Richard Adcock who later married Thomas Reed), who was the mother of Mary Edna Adcock, who married John Henry Dever. Their son, Reuben, was my grandfather. Until recently I had very little info. on this line, as my grandfather was a orphan at age 6 in 1894.

Sue

I don't know if this will be any help, but in researching my Burns family, I ran across an Elizabeth Burns (Jefferson County, Ohio-1836) married to Abram Litten. There is only a short paragraph from "Common Pleas Court Record Book L" (date and place above) which lists the names of Elizabeth's mother, father (deceased) and siblings, some also married. I would love to hear what you have on Elizabeth and Abraham, in the event that we might have a connection.
If you like, you can e-mail me direct at mrmcal@essex1.com
Thanks,
Marcia
