I am researching the ancestry of Peter Livermont, born in Canada in 1811. Peter Livermont married Julia LeClaire and was killed in the 1860's while moving with his family from Nebraska to Oregon.

I am the 2nd Great Granddaughter of Archange or Caroline Livernois born 25 Nov 1829 in Springwells Tw, Michigan died 12 Jun 1914 in Huron Twp, Wayne Co, Michigan. She married Leander dit St Antoine Vasher 28 Apr 1846 and was sister to your Daniel Livernois/Livingway who is buried in Deckerville, Sanilac, Michigan. He died 3 Jun 1914 and was married to Nancy Sawyer. Looks like we are related. I have done quite a bit of research on the Livernois family here in Michigan. Would like to hear from you!

Unfortunately, I no longer have info on the ancestors of Paul Benoit dit Livernois except for the connection with the Meloche surname. My ancestors were Meloche, but added the Livernois surname in the 1700's (Livernois dit Meloche). My gr-grandfather, Louis, dropped the Meloche surname and kept the Livernois surname. In 1780, Joseph Livernois (b.1760), son of Etienne Benoit dit Livernois, m. Mary Theresa Meloche (b. 1761), daughter of Francois Meloche, on 2 Sep 1780. I believe that is the only connection between the two families.

I do not have a picture of Josephine Livernois Roulo but to have the picture of Anchange Livernois Vasher and Leander. I would love to have any of those old pictures too! I just had a very old picture of my husbands Church ancestor appear because of leaving info 20 years ago in a historical society and the man with them on his home wall found my work and contacted me. Love it... he had the pictures copies and sent to me. What a find, so their are still pictures out there have hope.

Michele, I wish I could help you, but after researching the Livernois surname, I found that I am not a descendent of Paul Benoit dit Livernois, but rather of Francois Meloche. The Meloche surname was carried down to approx. 1762 when my gr-gr-gr-grandfather changed his surname from Meloche to Livernois dit Meloche. I can't find the reason for the change. My gr-grandfather droppped the Meloche part of the surname sometime in the 1848 timeframe but kept the Livernois surname. We moved approx. four years ago and because I had no connection to Paul Benoit dit Livernois, I destroyed all the paperwork on that surname. There is a connection between the two families, though. Joseph Livernois (b.1760) (descendent of Paul Benoit dit Livernois) married Mary Therese Meloche (b.1761) (descendent of Francois Meloche)on 2 Sep 1780. I only kept that part of the Paul Benoit connection to the Meloche family. Please contact me if you would like for my e-mail address and I can e-mail you a copy of what little I have.

Just came across this site. This post was made June 2, 2000 so maybe you have more information now. I am also a desendent of Paul Benoit dit Livernois and Issabelle Elizabeth Gobinet. My branch is through thier son Laurent Benoit dit Livernois b 02 Jan 1661 in Montreal Quebec, Canada. Do you have any further information on Francois Benoit dit Livernois married Dimanche Mare Chappelain? Or any other information that could be useful. Thanks, Michele

She sent me your mom's obit (but I don't have the date or the name of the paper that it was printed in). Carol told me that the family name Livernoise has a street in Detroit the same name; the family (father or grandfather) owned a brick place and made most of the brick in Detroit."
Please feel free to contact me at jawright1@verizon.net and perhaps we can exchange information.

The actual surname from France was Meloche. The dit name was Livernois. In the early 1800s, different families dropped one of the names so families became either Meloche (Melosh/Malosh) or Livernois. The families that moved into Clinton/Franklin County also took the name of Miller. In my family's circumstance (Francois Meloche Livernois and Rosalie Dejean...in US as Frank and Rose Miller)we were told the Miller came from his occupation (lumberman) but since so many other family members also took Miller as their name, I doubt this is correct. Miller seems to be an anglicized name beginning in the 1850 census.

I have some info on Joseph... though I didn't know he was a half brother, so I'm intrigued by that. Also, my information has Louis being born in 1831 in Quebec. Here is some of what I have:
Joseph (Joseph Louis Dominique Livernois) married Marie-Caroline Tremblay (b. 15 sept. 1866) on 25 Jan. 1884 in Clinton County, NY. He died on 18 March 1929 in Standish Michigan.
They had a bunch of kids (15). Gilbert, Rosea, Dominic, Moses, Avilish, Napoleon, Antavin, Feliza, Peter, Harvey, Doris, Zizin, Dominic Russel, Isabel, Sophie... all born in Standish, MI I believe.

I'm not certain of all my information, it's something I would like to solidify over the next few years. I hope this helps and doesn't confuse things more.
-Ron Miller
ron-miller@comcast.net

Levanois, Levanoit, Levernois, Livernois

I am looking for any information on my grandmother. Her given name was probably “Mary L” but I have also seen it as “Marie L”. Her last name was Levanois, Levanoit, Levernois, Livernois, or something similar. According to the 1900 census, she was born April, 1879 in Vermont. According to the birth records of two of her children, she was born in Milton, Vermont. According to the birth record of another, she was born in Burlington.
She married a man named Oliver (or Oliva) Benoit and she lived in Essex County Massachusetts in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses. According to the 1907 Lawrence, Massachusetts directory, Oliver (and I assume family) was “removed to Burlington, Vermont”. Their daughter Aurora (Ora) Benoit was born in Vermont, June 27, 1907. (all of their other children were born in Massachusetts) The family was back in Lawrence by 1909-10. It is possible that Mary still had family in Burlington (a mother, sister, or aunt) who she stayed with during a tough pregnancy.
Connie, I'm very new at this, but because of the internet have found a lot of info that keeps pointing in the right direction. I am also a descendent of Paul dit Livernois Benoit. His father as I've found thru another site was Francois dit Livernois Benoit who married Dimanche Chappelain in France. I'd be very interested in what you have, as I am still in the early stages of gathering info. I'm the g-granddaughter of Daniel Livingway (Livernois) who was the son of Eteinne Livernois and Geneveva Rouleau. He was born Dec. 31, 1839. His daughter Anne was my grandmother. Like I said I have limited info, but would exchange what I have with you. Cheryl

I have information on the ancestors of Agnes Cecilia Livernois born 1889 in Carleton Michigan married in 1907 to Robert J. Dunn. I believe your father was Robert and your mother Kate (I do not have her maiden name). Agnes (Livernois) Dunn's father was Francis (Frank) Livernois married to Zoe/Zora King and Frank's father was Steven Livernois born 1820 in Detroit and married to Julia or Liquette Angelique Riopelle. (Steven and Julia Livernois are buried in Holy Cross Cemeter in Detroit). I am descended from Steven (Etienne) Livernois married to Geneveva Rouleau'a daughter Archange/Caroline Livenois married to Leander Vasher.

I met someone named Dunn one day at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rockwood.
Julius was my great grandfather but I don't recall ever seeing him. The story I heard was that he was a heavy drinker, worked on the railroad and was killed in the winter by a train. It seems that when there were show drifts guys would get called out at night to hold lanterns on the side of the track so the engineer could guage where to go when ramming into a drift and break through. Apparently Julius got hit.

I have a theory about the name changes... it occurs to me that some of this may have happened around the time of the War of 1812. My thought is that these french-canadians didn't feel it was their was so they changed their names so as not to get called up. Only a theory, but I've been grappling with why for decades.

I ahve much the same info going back to the 1600's.
Louis Meloche was married to Sophie Galerneau.

About the name changes... I know Livernois was a dit name but beyond that I have no idea why they changed their nmaes so often. In the NY censuses that I have read they are Meloche one year miller the next time and then back to Meloche...I can't figure when they started using Livernois which is the name my husbands branch seemed to srick with except for Francois..Julius' brother who changed it to Miller after he left his 1st wife. I thought he was just trying to hide from her but evidently not.

Pat

Louis' parents were Louis Meloche and Sophie ?? I he quite a bit beoun that but I don't have real sources that I can check out.
I was trying to find out information about Julius because our family has never been able to figure out why all the name changes. It seems to go from Meloche to Livernois to Miller. Any ideas would be appreciated.
The info I have on the Meloche line goes back beyound 1663 (Francois Meloche who married Therese Hernu on April 14, 1663).

Elizabeth Livernois / Michigan

I just got back from Lincoln Park, Michigan, where I went to find information on my grand aunt, Alice Ruby Barnhart Schwartz, and this is the name of her daughter as listed in her obituary. Alice died in 1984. Can anyone give me any more information?

I too am a descendant of Paul Benoit dit Livernois. My mother was a Livernois who was born in 1900. I certainly would appreciate any information you have going back to the 1600's or so.

Thank you.
