Rees Rees Llewellyn and his wife Ann were my mother's great grandparents. Sailed from Newport, Wales 1834 on the ship Lucilla, age 21, described himself as a gunsmith. Died in PA 1890 and buried in Beech Creek, Clinton CO, PA. Does anyone know about his family in Wales or England? According to the US Census records, he did not read and write in English, so perhaps his first language was Welsh.

Hi!! Llewellyn Morris LLewellyn was my Grandfather's brother. Born 1844 to Morris Llewellyn Born 1794-1858 and Margaret 1793-1869 In Glamorgan Wales.
He emigrated in 1864 along with his wife Jane Morgan.They had one son, Henry when they left Wales.Morris had 1 sister and 4 brothers.Jane and Morris had 2 Girls and 4 boys.If you have anymore info on this family I would love to hear from you Diolch Thank You

Is your Aunt Virginia Moody Simpson Daniel? She had a brother named lewellen but im not sure how it was spelled I danced with his son George I belive? at my sister's wedding in 1999 about 6 months after her death. I felt so honored, he asked me to dance, and said "You look like my Aunt Ginny!"I loved her so much and miss her. Well anyway you may not even be related to me but I had to ask. We have quite an extroidinary family tree! I always like digging deeper!

William H H LLewellyn was greatr grand father. His son Theodore Roosevelt Llewellyn my grand father and his son Theodore Roosevelt Lewellyn (Jr) was my father. After my father and morther were devoriced she re-married and I was adopted by my stel father whicj resulted in my current name of Theodore Roosevelt Reese. I have been looking for info on the other Theodore Roosevelt Llewellyns. Do you have any?

I am nearly certain that I am a descendant of both Griffith and David Llewellyn via John and Elizabeth (Llewellyn) Young. A record of the descendants of William John of Gwynedd (by the Gwynedd Friends Meeting historian, with citations from wills) shows that his daughter Margaret Jones (she may also be called Margaret John) married (1) Rowland Ellis and (2) David Llewellyn. He has their daughter Anne Llewllyn marrying William Young, and their son John (who was a captain in the Philadelphia militia during the Revolution) marrying his second cousin Elizabeth Llewellyn. That seems pretty clear to me. A few years ago distant cousin in Texas sent me a similar genealogy. Elizabeth Llewellyn's dad was John Llewellyn, who was a physician, and his dad was Griffith. I also have Griffith's wife as Elizabeth Thomas (which I believe), though another source listed his wife as Margaret Lawrence. Hope that may provide a little confirmation or further leads!

His family originally owned Coal Mines in Wales but lost them gambling.

I am not related to Rees Llewellyn , but I live in the third (and final house) that Rees and Ann lived in in Fountain Green. The first home (a one room log cabin) is in our back yard and is used as a shed. The second home is just across the street. If you would like pictures of the homes, I would be happy to email them to you. You may already know this, but Rees became a very prominent man. He was the first mayor of Fountain Green and was the postmaster in town. He was also a faithful Latter-day Saint. When our home was about half completed, Rees was called on a mission to return to Wales and preach the gospel. He was gone about 4 years, I believe. When he returned, the home was finished, but you can see that the brick on the second story varies from that on the first story. I consider it a physical reminder of his dedication to his faith.
I found your post while researching where in Wales the Llewellyns came from. Thanks so much for the info. Let me know if you would like pictures. I'd love to send them to you

i may have a connection here My mothers brother william Lewellyn and his wife anne adopted a David Lllewelly who later emigrated to Australia in the late 60s David married a Maouri wife I stayed with David during my visits to Oz in the 80s I beleive David may of passed away last year in Oz

Davids adopted father William worked in ROF Glascoed his father was Wiilliam John Lllewellyn see my tree

Thomas Llewellyn is the earliest name i have
his birth was given as Norton in Hales,Salop(Shropshire)
on the 1881 Census for Audley Staffs and Oakley Ledge,Salop on the 1871 census for Audley on his marraige cert it states his father as unknown.

sorry but i'm not too sure who you are searching for.Or if your connection is with the Audley Llewellyns.Perhaps I'm misreading you. Had another look there seems to be a number of public trees with info about llewellyns of Cornwall.I have had no luck with shropshire.

In my original post I said;

The fact that George was not born in Cornwall led me to examine all the baptism records for the UK. The only one that matches is the George above.

I am therefore looking for anyone that might be connected to this family in Whitchurch and if there is any information that anyone can confirm or refute that this George is the one that I am related to.

The 1851 census for St Buryan shows his widow, Peggy, living with one of her children and the widow of a seaman. I have the marriage record and they married in Falmouth where Peggy was born. All their children were born in Falmouth.

have checked your info.A George llewellyn was living in St. Buryn CORNWALL in 1841 his wife was Peggy Bant but he was a labourer he died 1845 b. in foreign parts abt 1775.Another family with similiar records were based in Panama/ Glamorgan Wales.Possibly a mixture of the same family.

It's a year late but I have seen Garthas' name on census records from Tenn or Florence , Lauderdale county Ala. I think around 1900 or 1910.
John Wesley L was the brother of my Great grandfather, William Thomas L. John Wesley Lewellyn has a descendant in (I think) Colo. named Grace Bagwell. Just keep looking, someone will put some pics on one day.

Our families may have common origins.

I have a gr-gr-gr-grandfather by the name George LLEWELLYN (also spelled LLEWELLIN) who was a merchant seaman. He ended up based in Falmouth, Cornwall where he married. This information comes from census records. According to records (1841) he was not born in Cornwall and based on his age the only identity I can establish is that he was possibly born in Whitchurch, Shropshire and christened there 26 Dec 1775 son of John LLEWELLYN and Sarah.

Other children of this couple are;

Margaret b 1766,
Ann b abt 1769,
Mary b 1771,
Jane b 1773,
George (mine) b 1775,
John b 1778,
Charlotte b 1781.

From the above I deduce that John and Sarah possibly married circa 1763/4 but can find no record of this there.

George and his wife named my gr-gr-grandmother Charlotte which is not one of the local names.

Any of this info ring any bells?

Hi, im trying to link the LLewellyn family who had a coal merchaants based at ross-on-wye railway station.(Great western railway)
My grandmother Kathleen Beeney spoke of family of llewellyn's who were coal Merchants living in ross-on-wye at one stage.
The only Llewellyn I could find was a Samuel LLewellyn and Son.
Do you suppose this could be a relation of your Samuel LLewellyn?
I'v not yet linked the llewellyn's with my family names which are Flook and Nash's on my grandmothers side but am very happy for you to view my tree if you would like an invite.
I did find a Samuel LLewellyn coal Merchant ross married to a Martha on a census and she was born in st Issels pembrokeshire wales.I find this encouraging as my great great grandmothe rJane Nash was born in st Issels so am wondering if they were siblings which would make sens as my great grandmother was named Martha Flook

This is probably the third e-mail I've sent to you today as i'm so anxious for you to receive this info. I only barely found your messages on mocavo. I would LOVE any info about Rees's family still in Wales or any info about his early life and I have access to MUCH info on Rees's desendants in America. I'm willing to share anything I have. My daughter is living in England right now as her husband is going to school in London, but she has 2 little girls and can't travel very much to seek info. She is returning from England on June 15, 2011.

We are distant cousis as Rees Rees was my mother's great grandfather. His son Gomer David was her grandfather.

Rees Rees Llewellyn and his wife Ann were my mothers great grandparents. They immigrated to Utah by handcart in 1856 in a company led by Edward Bunker. I have a biography of Rees and Ann and access to pictures. I am so thrilled to possibly have access to some research for earlier ancesters as most of the Welch records haven't been released to the public and need to be viewed in Wales. I've been looking fruitlessly for a marriage record and birth records of Rees and Ann. I'm also looking for verificaton of Rees's father Rees Llewellyn and his mother Margaret Williams as well as his grandfather Thomas Llewellyn and Eleanor Reese. All I have is that Rees Llewellyn was born in Feb 1780 in Methyr Tydfil Glamorgan Wales and died in Gellyfailog, Methyr Tydfid Glams Wales in1839. Margaret Williams was born in 1780 in Abardare Glmrgan, Wales and died in Dowlais, Glamorgans Wales. I would be very happy to do any research for you on the decendants or Rees Rees Llewellyn or anyone else you are interested in in return for your help in finding original records in Wales as I'm hoping for some verification of the few bits I have. I'm also unable to read Welch which is daunting. I'l wait anxiously for a reply from you, and would like to know more about you, as well. Thanks so much!!!

It appears to be a first marriage. Mary died young, perhaps in child birth. I don't have the first name of her husband.

Yes i've i've been there plenty of times. Not for a couple of years now though.

My Grandad (Melvyn) married Catherine (not sure of her maiden name), they lived at Ty Mawr farm in Llangan. The family history gets a bit hazy before Melvyn because he didn't have a father (which was obviously frowned badly upon in those days). I think his mother was then killed at quite young age so he may even have been adopted at some point. I seem to remember he had a brother (or half brother) called Jonny. I'll speak to my father and find out what he knows and i'll get back to you.

Melvyn had 5 children:

Melvyn-Rhys Llewellyn
David Llewellyn
Betty Reece
Gwyn Llewellyn
Peter Llewellyn (my father)

It must be extra difficult to track ancestary in wales because people often get called by their middle name!

Thanks for the information. I cannot tie them in at the moment, but t6hat isn't a surpeise as I have been rsearching from about their births backwards. I am away for a few days but will track them down and let you know. I don't know if you have been to the area but the three villages are very small - or at least they were. At the moment I seem to have two llewellyn groups (that are probably related but way back) but I will attempt to find out your names for you. There are two Rhys' at about the same time..... Do you know who the parents of your grand dad and Rhys were?

I just stumbled across this thread when i was searching for something on google.

My Grandfather was Melvyn Llewellyn who lived most of his life in Llangan. He died in 2004 aged about 94 and is buried in the church yard there. My Uncle - Rhys Llewellyn still lives there. My father moved to Yorkshire about 30 years ago so i was born in Leeds.

Not sure that's much help to you.

Actually, it turns out I am related, in a roundabout way. John William and Elizabeth (Winter) Llewellyn had a daughter, Muriel Irene Llewellyn. Muriel married Percy Atwood Leonard Foote. Percy is descended from my 4 x great uncle, Enos Flewelling.

it appears that emma henshall married jonathan gleaves of audley in 1857 at keele, a nearbye village. their son alfred gleaves was born in 1861. jonathan a miner died in 1868 aged abt. 36 .thomas, a miner, married emma gleaves in 1870.they raised a family in audley

I am also looking into my paternal grandmothers family (Llewellyn) from St Mary Hill/Treoes/ Llangan and later Bridgend.

My grandmother was Mary Hannah Llewellyn d/o Thomas 1861 and Mary(Rees)1867. Their parents were John 1830 St Mary Hill and an Ann of St Mary Hill.

I am having a few problems in going back any further at the moment but suspect that the families in all three villages are from the same stock. The census returns indicate this.

The CD you mention is intreaging me..... What is it? Any information you may have on any of the Llewellyn's there would be greatly appreciated.

Any information on the Llewellyn's of Llangan, Treoes or St Mary Hill near Bridgend Glam would be appreciated. My paternal grandmother was Mary Hanna Llewellyn born 1891 in St Mary Hill who then moved to Bridgend, Glamorgan S Wales.
