It is free to join, and a great place to share family tree information. I highly suggest joining both email lists so messages aren't missed.

http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/l/lock.html

http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/l/locke.htm...

Merry Christmas everyone!

I have some Locke artifacts and certain names, information and dates, but have far too many blanks. Please help. Any tales of the great Dr. Dean himself, founder of Lockeford, would be wonderful as he was evidently a true pioneer and an all-around interesting Locke.

To all Lock(e) researchers

Hello everyone
Just to let you know you have many options to choose to post your queries. You can join the Lock and Locke email lists at rootsweb.com for free, which typically has around 200 memembers at any given time who are there to help you with your family tree.

I recommend joining both email lists so you don't miss discussions on one list which may not be discussed on the other list. Why they seperated Lock from Locke I still don't know, but thats that way it is lol.

On the Lock and Locke email lists, we also discuss the latest tool, DNA testing which many Lock(e)'s are now using to help solve their family tree mysteries.

From my web site, you have access to many free transcribed census records, which is always being updated when possible.

Posting to the forums is great, but the email lists can really help you a lot if you give it a chance.
From my web site and email list, you can keep up to date on the latest DNA test results, which may help tie certain lineages together.

http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/l/lock.html

http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/l/locke.htm...

All Lock(e)'s from anywhere in the world is welcome to join us in the Lock / Locke DNA project.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Donald Locke
http://lockeroots.home.comcast.net/~lockeroots/

Mehitable HIGGINS Locke (1758-?)

I am trying to identify the parents of the Mehitable HIGGINS who married Jacob LOCKE, son of Richard LOCKE and Elizabeth GARLAND, on 4 Jan 1778 in Wakefield, Carroll, NH. According to the book on the descendants of Capt. John LOCKE, she was born 10 Feb 1758 in Greenland, Rockingham, NH. However, I have found two entries in the IGI that she was born on that date on the island of Greenland (Gronland), a province of Denmark. I don't know how reliable the IGI is but I haven't been able to find her parents in New England, so it might be true.

Do any of you have any information that might shed some light on this mystery? If so, I would really appreciate you shareing it with me.

Locke family in Buriton / Chalton area Hampshire

I'm tracing the Locke branch of my family and have got as far as Robert Locke, born abt 1805 who married Harriet White in Chalton in 1832. They had 6 children - Laura, William, James, Alfred, Brownlow and Robert.

They're on the census and IGI have a listing for Harriet and Robert getting married in 1832 at Chalton Parish Church. I'm not from the area and haven't been able to get a copy of the marriage entry yet.

I've found a few sites detailing Lockes in the area but no information about Robert and Harriet's marriage or parents. Has anyone come across this family and have any further information?

Judith Locke-Goochland/Cumberland Co., VA-mid-1700s

Judith Locke married James Sandridge in Goochland Co., VA in 1757. James died by 1778, and their son John Sandridge (born about 1758) chose Drury Woodson of Cumberland Co., VA to be his guardian (and Judith had remarried to a Daniel Jones). Does anyone have any information on this Locke family?

It appears that the above John Sandridge was also the man of that name who married Mary Davidson around 1778 in either Buckingham or Cumberland Co., VA. As such, their descendants would all be Locke descendants. Thanks.
I am researching my ggggrandfather John Lock who emigrated with his wife Maria (nee Bavage) and their children Henry, John, Elizabeth and Charlotte to Western Australia in 1842. John died in Mauritius in 1862 (aged 63) and his son Henry died there in 1880 (they had a merchant trading business in Port Louis).
I think John had a brother Joel, as they are both named as being together as business owners at the same addresses in Bath for the Rainbow Inn and bottle and leech merchants. Also Henry is named as Joel Lock's nephew in the 1851 census.
Does anyone have any connections to John or Joel (b Milverton, Sommerset) in their family?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Linda.

Looking for any descendants of the Lock(e)'s from
Hopkins County Kentucky 1880 to now.

There are actually 2 branches of my tree who migrated to Hopkins County. One branch came from Barren County Kentucky, the other branch came from Jackson County Tennessee.

Regardless which branch you descended from, we come from the same tree. Both branches are close cousins to each other, even if they don't know it.

Hi everyone!
Just an update on the Lock / Locke DNA project.

We now have 35 Lock(e) men in the DNA project.
We now know there are at least 24 distinct unrelated lineages in the world and that number grows as more men participate.

The most well known and oldest Lock(e) lineages in the USA have a very good participation rate so far and that is great! That means some of the most well researched and oldest lineages in the USA have participated in the project and so we now have a good idea how their DNA's all look.

There is now 7 distinct groups who's DNA is a good match and most of whom have a paper trail linking their branches together.
While the USA lineages are going very well in the project, we are really needing you Lock(e)'s who live in England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Russia, Sweden and else where to participate in this project.

This is a world wide project for all Lock / Locke men to determine how many distinct lineages there are in the world and to see which branches shared a common male ancestor.

If you are interested in the DNA project, please contact me via email.

Donald Locke
http://home.comcast.net/~lockeroots/home.html

I have been trying to locate who of the descendents of William Locke, of Woburn, went to Canada at the time of the Revolutionary War. My grandfather was born in Ontario about 1877. His father was a Sheriff in Kingston Ontario. My grandfather said his father was descended from Lockes in Massachusetts and that some of them stayed and fought in the war and a few went to Canada. Is there anyone who has information on who may have gone to Canada? Thank you so much!

world wide Lock / Locke DNA project

Ok it is that time of year again to announce the
Lock / Locke DNA project which is open to all Lock(e)'s world wide. We now have 50 participants from the USA and England represented in the project.

But there are a ton of lineages not represented in the DNA project! This project hopes to better define exactly how many unrelated Lock(e) lineages there are in the world, and to see which lineages are DNA related to each other.

Using the knowledge of who is a DNA match to each other, will help us who are doing the paper trail research, to focus on certain lineages to trace the paper trial on.

We still lack Lock(e)'s from Canada and Australia and Germany and else where. You are just as important for this project, so make 2008 your year to join this project!

At last count, there are at least 30 unrelated blood lines in the world and counting, so no, we aren't all related!
You don't have to be a family tree researcher, or a DNA expert to get involved! In fact, the majority aren't doing much research on their family trees, they leave that to us who are doing the research, but their DNA has helped us a great deal.

The paper records are always first and foremost, but with the use of DNA testing, we can see other family connections to branches that we never amagined were related. It works and it works well!
It is a tool to aid in the paper trail research, nothing more, but it has already shown us DNA matches between branches that we had no clue were related.

It is fun and interesting all at the same time.
We need a lot more men from all walks of life to get involved in this project.
England, Canada, Australia, USA, Germany, Russia, and else where. And including the Gypsy Lock(e)'s! You know who you are!

The only exception are the Chinese American Lock(e)'s, this project wouldn't benefit you because you all came to America and took on the Lock(e) surname. So you will never DNA match the European lineages unless your direct ancestor was a European male descendant.

And yes, we have a couple of African American Lock(e)'s or a mix AA/European. You too are welcome in to the project.

We have 2 of the 3 Native American Lock(e) family's represented in the project.
The Creek Lock''s of Florida, the Choctaw of Oklahoma are in the project. The only one missing now is the Lakota Locke's.

They are still of European male descent, though they are a high enough percentage to become tribal members of their Tribes. There is to my knowledge, no full blood Native American Lock(e)'s in the USA. They are mix European forefather and Native American mothers.

A good many American's have to a small degree, some Native American in us. I myself have a little bit of Cherokee in me from my grand fathers grand mothers grand parents, the Payne's of Alabama. But because us Lock(e)'s in the USA are not full blood Native American, we won't show our Native American DNA on the male side, that may show up on the female side of the DNA, maybe, maybe not.

If you are a Roma / Romany / Romani / Romnchel or
Gypsy / Traveler Lock(e) from the UK, I am very interested in getting you all more involved. One of your cousins has already tested.

Please contact me directly or visit my web site to learn more about the project.
Donald Locke
http://lockeroots.home.comcast.net/~lockeroots/
I have been at the Locke Family of Virginia web site and I see you have listed Godfrey Hauperts wife as Mary. She was my Greatgrandmother. Her maiden name was Mary Ellen Dougherty not sure of the spelling. She died in childbirth in 1893. Godfrey remarried and had more children. I am interested where in Penn. we all originally settled. What branch of the family went to Virginia? I have lots of info about Godfrey Hauperts line. Let me know if I can give or get information.

Abraham Lock & Samuel Lock of Virginia

I don't know if others confirmed this fact in the past or not, but I will post it in case it helps others.
While looking at Virginia land deeds, I stumbled upon something that confirms what we had suspected in the past.

Page 254
1796 Abraham Lock buys 100 acres in Wythe County Virginia.
on the White Oak Branch water of Clinch River

In the past, we assumed this was Abraham Lock son of Samuel Lock, but couldn't be 100% sure because there was a 2nd Abraham Lock in the area.

Page 487 & 488 is a deed for William Whitton, in his deed it mentions his land is ajoining
Abraham Lock's land , heir at law of Samuel Lock.
So we now have confirmation the Abraham Lock of Wythe County Virginia is one and the same
Abraham Lock son of Samuel Lock of Washington County and Montgomery County Virginia.

This Abraham Lock was in Lee County Virginia and then on to Harlan County Kentucky by 1810

Hope this tid bit helps someone :)
Don
This info was incredibly hard to sort through, so I'm posting it for others. It concerns a Margaret R. LOCKE buried in Circleville Cemetery, Jackson Co. KS

Guy McComas b. 1836 Cabell Co VA was the son of Hiram McComas, a son of Moses McComas. Hiram McComas was the brother to the Sanders W. 'S.W.' I do not know if that marriage was in Jackson County. She was the daughter of Thomas Lanter and Spicey Davis who were married 3 Mar 1818 in Madison, KY. I do not know if Guy McComas and Margaret Lanter had any children together. (If anyone knows, please email me back.) Guy McComas must have died (anyone know when or where?)

The now Margaret (Lanter) McComas went on to marry 2nd: Dewitt Clinton Locke on 7 Nov 1861 in Jackson Co., KS. Margaret (Lanter) McComas and Dewitt Clinton Locke had 4 children together:
Hattie Locke b 30 Aug 1862 d. 27 Apr 1867 Buried Circleville Cem, Jackson Co KS
Sidney E.
John Locke and children

I am a descendant of John Locke. He was born in 1799 in Corinth, Vermont. He married Sarah Frost Thurston and they had 15 children. The children were all born in Corinth, VT. Their names are Lucy M., Nancy, John Lovering, Susan C., Charles E., Will Clinton (M.D.), Charles Collins, Victoria R., Elliot S., Hannah Merrill, Carrie, Sarah Julia, Anna D., George Eugene (M.D.), and Henry Eustace. I found a family bible with all the names of the children but nothing on the ancestry of John Locke or his wife Sarah Thurston has come up. He moved to Chelsea, VT after his last child was born and married again to Eroe A. Medcalf in 1865. I'm looking for the descendants of any of his children and the ancestry of John and his wife.

DeWitt Clinton Locke b 1835 s/o John and Sarah (Thurston) LOCKE VT

A Portrait and Biographical Sketch of Kansas has a biosketch of DeWitt Clinton Locke. I would like to connect w/ others familiar with this family as he married twice: (1) to Margaret R McComas and had 4 children, (2nd) to Betty R Lewis and had more children. I am trying to resolve some issues. Need Locke researchers to contact me if you are familiar with the Corinth, Orange Co VT Lockes.

Honorable DeWitt C Locke first pressed the soil of the Sunflower State, then a territory in the spring of 1858 locating in what was then Calhoun, but is now Jackson Co (KS) with his brother John, 2 1/2 mi southwest of Circleville. He sojourned in that region most of the time until 1866, and for one and one half years was employed as a clerk in a store in Holton. During the year mentioned Mr Locke purchased land on section 2, Franklin Twp, of which he has since been a resident, and during the 23 yrs of his sojourn here he has fully established himself in the esteem and confidence of his fellow citizens. He owns 320 acres of land in Franklin and Garfield townships, making his residence in the former. He has erected substantial modern buildings and gathered around himself and his family all of the comforts and many of the luxuries of life. His hospitable home is the frequent resort of the best people of the county, and a place where good cheer abounds and where is extended to both friends and strangers a courteous and hearty welcome. Mr. Locke was first married in Circleville to Miss Margaret R. McComas, a native of Missouri. She became the mother of two children: William E and Lizzie M and departed this life at her home in Franklin Twp in 1873. In 1875 Mr Locke married a 2nd time to Betty R Lewis, daughter of N.D. Lewis who was one of the earliest settlers to Jackson Co. The Lewis family removed hither from MO in 1854. Of this union there were 3 children: Effie E, Clara E and Nona L. After occupying other positions of trust and responsibility, Mr. Locke in Fall 1868 was elected to represent the Democrats in the Kansas Legislature, served one term. During the troublous times of the Civil War he was enrolled in the State Militia and assisted in driving the rebel Gen Price from the soil of Kansas. He has taken an active part in political affairs. He and his wife are prominently connected with the Presbyterian church, attending services in Holton. Mr Locke was born in Corinth, Orange Co VT Dec 26, 1835. His parents were John and Sarah (Thurston) Locke, who were likewise natives of the Green Mtn State and born respectively in Corinth, Orange Co. VT. For about 16 yrs after their marriage they lived in Corinth and then removed to Chelsea VT. Their family consisted of some 6 sons and 8 daughters of whom DeWitt C was the 2nd son and fourth child.

66/67 marker DNA match!

We have confirmation, we have a 66/67 marker DNA match
between 2 differnt Lock lines.

There is no paper trail to link them as of yet, but with such a close DNA match we know they are related.

This involves the family lines of
Robert L. Lock of Mercer County Kentucky USA and
Thomas Lock of Lincoln County Kentucky USA.
Both Robert and Thomas Lock were born in the 1790's,
they are likely brothers.

This is a kinship we wouldn't have found had it not been for DNA testing! :)
Now we know there is a kinship, we can persue the paper trail with vigor knowing this is a positive kinship between the 2 branches.

The 2 branches likely have ties to Virginia USA.

Donald Locke
http://home.comcast.net/~lockeroots/home.html

Att: 1700's Lock(e)'s of Virginia

If you have traced your Lock(e) lineage back to the 1700's or earlier Virginia USA. You are one I would like to talk to. We are looking for living male Lock(e) descendants to participate in DNA testing to see which Virginia clans are related.

For many of the Virginia clans, they are stuck in their research using the paper records, so we are trying to use DNA testing to open new doors to see if there are other kinships that we aren't aware of.
Some of the Virginia clans had come from Maryland, so we are also looking for trees that have traced back to Maryland 1600's - 1700's.

I especially would like to see the descendants of
Jacob Lock b. 1700's of Berkeley County and Hampshire County Virginia and his son Abraham Lock of Montgomery County and Lee County Virginia to DNA test.
Abraham moved to Chariton County Missouri and his descendants moved to Polk County and Benton County Oregon.

And
Samuel Lock b. 1752 of Washington County and Montgomery County Virginia and his 2 sons Samuel Jr. and Abraham

Samuel Jr and Abraham moved to Lee County Virginia and by 1810 Abraham Lock son of Samuel Lock Sr. moved on to Harlan County Kentucky.

I believe Samuel Lock Sr. and Jacob Lock were brothers, but I have no paper trial to prove that. DNA testing both family's could prove to me and others they are related as I highly suspect.

I don't care which Lock(e) line you descend from who came from early Virginia, we need your help by sharing your family information and by participating in DNA testing.

We are first trying to prove how many unrelated Lock(e) lines there were in early Virginia and secondly, trying to see which lineages are related.
We already know through DNA testing 2 of the Virginia lineages are in no way blood relaed.

If you are a male born Lock(e) anywhere in the world, we invite you to participate in the Lock(e) DNA project.

Thanks
Donald Locke
http://home.comcast.net/~lockeroots/home.html

Interesting Locke Letter - Louisiana, 1930

I purchased an interesting letter as part of a lot at a local antique flea market here in Texas. The letter is from the City of Lake Charles Mayor, Leon Locke, to George W. Sibley, written on Feb 12, 1930. The letter is in response to a claim that the Sibley family lost cotton presumably at the hands of Federal authorities during the Civil War. The response states that an act on Congress, approved in 1915, prevents the extension of claims arising out of the Civil War. The letter is signed by Mr. Locke. If this part of your family, please contact me.
