Who was Josephine Lockett???

Josephine Lockett, 17, TN TN TN, died in Nov 1879 and was listed on the 1880 Roane Co. TN Mortality Schedule. She was listed as part of family #35 which consisted of William A. Lockett, 24; his wife Isabella (Copeland), 20; a son John 2 months who would have been born about April 1880. William and Clarissa were married in Roane Co. on 22 June 1879.

From all this it would appear that Josephine may have been a sister of William.

William was a son of William Lockett and Clarissa (Liles). Does anyone have any information to prove (or disprove) that Josephine was also a child of William and Clarrissa?
RE: the Pocahantas connection. If you can find my tree (Carr,Jr.) you can work your way back to Robert Bolling where I have some stories linked I have found. Robert was married to Pocahantas but only had one child, then remarried to a Stith. The line in my tree goes through is James H Lockett. On his mother's side back to Elizabeth Bolling who's father was Robert. You will find what stories I have by clicking on his name. Hope this is not too confusing, but I don't have enough of a grip on this line to post it all here.

I checked the book "Pocahontas' Descendants, A Revision, Enlargement and Extension of the List as Set Out by Wyndham Robertson in His Book 'Pocahontas and Her Descendants' (1887)" by Stuart E. Brown, Jr., Lorraine F. Myers, and Eileen M. Chappel.

It appears that the Lockett connections to Pocahontas are through Lucy Alice Baskervill who married John K. Lockett and Adela Evelyn Eppes b.1890 who married James W. Lockett in 1913. William H. Lockett b.1869 and John R. Lockett who married Mary Baptist are also listed in the book. I didn't have time to follow the lines back to Pocahontas.

Check RootsWeb WorldConnect database: palmspringsbum for the ancestry of Adele Evelyn Eppes back to Pocahontas.

Hope this helps.
Doug Moore

Mildred,
This concerns, possibly, the Benjamin Lockett you show as Benjamin III (son of Benjamin Jr.) who received land in KY for service in the Revolution.

A Benjamin Lockett was in Clark Co., KY by 1808. He is found there in the 1810, 1820 and 1830 censuses. I still need to check the tax records to see when he first shows up.

I am interested in Benjamin because my 4th gr. grandparents, Christopher Davis and Charity Lockett, were married in Clark Co., KY on 12 Nov 1808. Charity's father Thomas Lockett gave his consent to the marriage. I haven't seen the original record so I don't know if Thomas gave consent in person or in writing. The Bondsman was Benjamin Lockett.

I have no other record of Charity's father Thomas Lockett. I need to check the tax records for Clark Co., KY to see if Thomas is living there in any of the years prior to 1810. He is not in any of the census records for KY. It seems likely that Thomas and Benjamin could have been brothers.

Benjamin Lockett applied for a pension for his Rev. War service on 23 June 1818 while living in Clark Co., KY. He was born in VA and his age was 56 at that time so he was born about 1762. In 1819 he referred to three daughters & in 1821 he referred to his wife aged about 50 & to daughters, Polly 15 (b. abt. 1806) & Nancy 13 (b. abt. 1808). He moved to Franklin Co., Ohio by 1835. ("Genealogical Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files" Vol.11: F-M, p.2102, by Virgil D. White).

Christopher Davis also moved to Franklin Co., Ohio.

Benjamin Lockett mar. (prob. his 2nd wife) 30 Dec 1812 Peggy Loam in Clark Co., KY.

Polly Locket (probably Benjamin's dau.) mar. Benjamin Baxter on 23 Jan 1840 in Clark Co., KY.
(Kentucky Marriages, 1785-1979, www.familysearch.org).

It appears that both Benjamin and his dau. Nancy died in 1836 in Franklin Co., Ohio. ("Index to Franklin County, Ohio, Guardianships and Estates, 1803-1850" p.17, by W. Louis Phillips).

I am interested to know if you might have any information on Benjamin of Clark Co., KY or Thomas and his dau. Charity.

Doug Moore

Hello Rick,

I must admit I wasn't expecting a reply to my post at this latter date! I think there is a high chance you are related to the Lockett family in England. I think your father is the brother of my husbands grandfather, my husband is the grandson of George Frederick Lockett who left Canada for England. I do not wish to put too much info on here but feel free to E-mail me on loulockett@sky.com

My husband would love to know of any information you may have of his Canadian roots.

Lou

Hi Gordon,

I am glad I could help with your connections.

Walthall Cheatham Lockett was born @ 1/16/1794 and died @ 3/12/1868. He was in the military for @ 1 year during the War of 1812, enlisting June 29, 1813. I have him in the 1810, 1840, 1850 and 1860 census.

John R. Pritchett in his Southside Virginia Genealogies lists a Cheatham Lockett marrying a widow, Obedience Newby Hancock @ 1797. She had children by George Hancock, her first husband, and the birthdate accepted for Walthall Lockett means his mother probably died shortly after his birth and Obedience was his step-mother. Unfortunately much of the paper trail is lost for this timeframe.

Happy hunting,

Mike

Michael: Here is something that might lead to Walthall Cheatham Lockett, Samuel Morris Henry Walthall witnessed Benjamin Lockett Sr's will, Benjamin Jr's daughters name was Mary Walthall, the Cheathams,Lockett & Walthalls apparently were well to do neighbors in Bristol Parrish then Henrico now Chesterfield holding land near where the appomatox meets the james what would now be Colonial Heights, (coincidentally where I grew up) Wlathall Cheatham Lockett sounds more like the name of a real estate holding company!

Edmond Lockett married Sally Bryant and he died in 1834 in Chesterfield Co. VA. They were childless and his will mentioned leaving lands to his wife, Edmund W. Lockett, Edmund A.(Ashbrook) Lockett and two of his daughters Mary A. and Rebecca Lockett.

Edmund W. Lockett was a son of his brother Daniel Lockett who lived and died in Wythe Co. VA. Has anyone found where this Edmund sold these lands in Chesterfield Co. He was to get 1/3 of the land mentiond in the will.

To finish the story, Edmund A. Lockett was the only child of his brother David who remained in Chesterfield Co. and lived near Edmund and Sally. This nephew was appointed administrator of this will and later helped Sally get a widows pension. He got 1/3 of the land and the two daughters each got 1/6 of the lands after Sally died.

James Lockett in Chesterfield County, Virginia

I have three marriages involving men named James Lockett in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

The first is James H. Lockett(1816-1864) who married Martha Ann Purdie, bond 12/22/1841. His parents are Elam Lockett and Phoebe Cheatham. I am comfortable with this family group.

The second is James Lockett( - ) who married Mary Jo Rudd, bond 2/21/1846. Her mother is listed as Mary Rudd. Who are this James' parents?

A third James Lockett(1822- bef. 1870) who married Phoebe Bass Blankenship, Sept. 11, 1865. They were widower and widow. This James listed his parents as father O. and mother R. Lockett - I cannot determine any further. He is dead before 1870 as Phoebe is listed as Widow. The Chesterfield death records are fragmented for this timeframe, and 1868 is missing.

A fourth is James Lockett( - ) who married Mary Condry, bond 11/6/1837. This James appears to be the son of Stephen Lockett, but his mother is unknown to me.

Any help linking the second, third, and fourth James Lockett(s) to parents would be appreciated.

Michael Tyler

Ihave heard all of this information before but, have never found any proof.I have had a researcher state Aron's wife was stateded as Cynthia but, nobody ever produced any proof. I am also uncertain as to Whether James was Aaron's father.Aaron had a neoghbor named James League also. This James could have been his father. I and some others have taken a Dna test and there is some doubt as to whether Aaron and James(his neighbor) were related at all. I matched an ancestor from Edmund League's other son, hiowever we did not match one of James's(his Neighbor) descendant.

Hi Cheryl! I just joined the Lockett Lounge. Thank you for making me aware of this group on FB! I, too, had some Locketts who lived in New Orleans. My name is Yolanda Cook-Harrell and my mother, Barbara Lockett, had a father named Herman Lockett. Fortunately, I have been able to find quite a few of my relatives through shear perseverance! Take care!

Gary,

I have that Benjamin Lockett married Mary Ann League, who wrote her own consent, on 01 Nov 1797 in Amelia Co. VA, John Lockett, surety; Peter Farley and John Lockett, witnesses to consent.

However I also have a note that Jacob Lockett married Mary League, who wrote her own consent, on 25 Oct 1798, by Rev. John Skurrey; William Holt, surety in Amelia Co. VA. Edmund and Mary League of Prince Edward Co. to Jacob Lockett of Amelia Co. 90 acres on branches of Sandy River on 9 Dec 1799 - Prince Edward Co. Deed Bk.?:398. It is believed that this Mary died after giving birth to Elizabeth C. Lockett. Jacob took a 2nd wife in 1804.

Are these Marys related, or....?

Jim Lockett
