I lived at Girls Town in the fifties, also my sister Joyce. I remember most of the people you mentioned. I remember a very nice girl Eliose Handy .My room ate was Ellen. I have so many memories of my time there. I found it again in the seventies. I remember looking in the office window and seeing that statue of Jesus that was near the door. It had been closed for some time and was surrounded by a chain link fence. A caretaker let me roam around,it brought back lots of memories. A few years later I returned to find it gone.
I attended Girls Town 1954-and would love to recall those great times in the Dining hall and on the playground. I lived in Dorm 11 and 9 and sang and made recording. I recall Mrs Mott, Aunt Mabel, Billiy and Betty her twins and the Infirmary. I had many friends and Little Essie, Aunt Essies, Granddaughter and I were very close. She and I and Nova Johnson actually took a trip into Riverside hotly pursued by Aunt Essie. What great adventures I had in Girls Town.
Glad to find thisw site. I will watch to see if anyone else comments..

DNA Project for Losey/Locy/Locey

Hey all you Losey/Locy/Locey's. I have just set up a DNA project through Ancestry.com. You do not have to be a member to join this project. Just sign in as a guest. I am trying to prove relationships amongst that group of boys from PA born in about the 1790's and of course help all of us check out our relationships and history. At long last we have a site to do just that. Please check in with me if you know of any other DNA activity for the Losey/Locy/Locey's. And of course please track down any males of this line that you know and collect that DNA. Any males with a last name that may be connected to this group is welcome. Others that I have come across include Losee, Losche (German origin pronounced pretty close to Losey)

I was a student at Girls Town from 1962 - 1965. I have some great memories of G/T. I wonder what happened to little Essie ( i would baby sit her for Mrs West) and Butch Locy. I remember when his Dad passed away. I was visiting Riverside and made a trip to see where G/T had been. Its an apt complex now. Very sad. G/T was a big part of my child hood. I remember a guy named Bill took care of the horses that I loved to ride. Would love to know what happened to some of those people. Linda Miller

Hi Ulla --
Thanks for the e-mail. I would love to speak with, I guess, my half brother Al. I can call this weekend if convenient. I remember going to a party in Chicago with Dad, when I was little, to celebrate a brithday -- I believe Al's. I just remember how tall he was. I also vaguely remember someone coming to Dad's funeral -- I think it was Al.

My mother said that she spoke with Al but didn't get his phone number. She is 89 and healthy. She did not divorce my Dad, he died when she was 39. She never remarried.

Dad was buried in Fort Dodge as they had resided there for a couple of years after marriage. I believe he purchased burial lots early on. Mom sold all but his after he passed. My brother and I were both born in Fort Dodge and moved shortly after my birth in 1947 to Omaha. From Omaha (for maybe 4-5 years) to Springfield (maybe 1 year) and then to Chicago.

I don't know what I can contribute, as I was pretty young when he died, but I would love to be in contact with family from my Dad's side.

Thanks,

Kathy

Hi Kathy,
This is so exiting! Didn't your mom get the name of the caller who asked about her late husband? How old is your mother. Did she divorce Albert? My friend Al, Albert's son from the second marriage would like to know EVERYTHING you and your mom remember about Albert. Dates, places, etc. Al says his dad died in Chicago and was buried in Ft. Dodge. Al has been to the grave. We have no idea why he is buried there. Do you have siblings? Are you and/or your siblings interested in contacting Al? He is very curious about possible siblings. He has a sister who is his full sibling. She is in Wis. and Al is in No. Cal. where I am. Al is very nice and not an alcoholic. Born in 1936. His mom was Marie Polodna. Your dad's first wife's name was Stella.

Well as I said we are greatful for any and all info you have.

Sincerely, Ulla

Re: Albert Locy

I heard yesterday that someone spoke to my mother, Grace Locy, about my father, Albert Locy.

I do not know much about his history -- just rumors. He died when I was 13. Even though he a problem with alcohol, a gene I inherited, he was a very kind, loving man.

I believe he was born in Postville, Iowa, the youngest, with two older sisters. His mother was over 100 when she died, I believe.

One story I heard was that he was a light weight (or featherweight) boxer in Chicago in the 20's. We use to watch the Friday night fights together. He told me that when growing up (I believe in Chicago) for a game he would sit on the curb with another kid and they would see who could peel the thinnest and longest apple skin. Another story -- whether true or not I don't know -- during elections in Chicago, Dad got a list of the deceased and everytime you voted for them you got one dollar.

If I can be of further help, let me know. My phone number is 208/345-1403.

I heard Essie Binkley Locy preach in Glendale, CA around 1935. I am part of a family of printers, The Church Press in Glendale. Mr. West was a publisher of a small newspaper, probably called The Independent. He specialized in digging up sensational or scandalous items. In the process of defaming or exposing Mrs. Locy, Mr. West became an admirer, and later a convert, and eventually her third husband. It is possible someone in my family has more information on Mr. Locy.

this may not help you very much, but I recall learning of an evangelist named Essie Binkley West in around 1949 or 50. She had come to my attention because I read an article about her in the Los Angeles Examiner (now defunct) in which she was described as The Angel of Skid Row because her ministry had helped so many down on their luck, including a fallent silent screen movie actress named Olive Borden. It just may be some of the archives of the LA Examiner survive somewhere. Or perhaps the still thriving Los Angeles Times has some background information. I recall, too, that Essie had a regular radio program on a station that existed back then which was chiefly one of religious programming.,

Albert E. Locy is the name of my husband's grandfather. Albert first married Stella (in Oconto, Wisconsin). They had 4 children - Robert, Ethel, Dorothy and Marie. Albert next married a Marie ?. They had an Albert and Pat. Albert next married Grace and they had a Doug and Kathleen. It sounds like this may be the family you are looking for. This Albert, we believe, was born in Iowa, but died in Chicago. Please advise.

Trying to find the first name for our grandmother's 2nd husband. Her maiden name was Essie Binkley. 1st husband was a Jenkins so she may have been known as either name when she married mister Locy.Seems no surviving members of her family remembers his first name. They had no children and she married a third time (to a West)when mister Locy died sometime between 1920 and 1950.

Ann E LOCY Sacramento Co, CA & James LOSEY Davis Co, IA

I am trying to get some information about the woman I believe was the mother of my g-grandmother, Mary Ann NANCE, who married Jesse William GRAY.

My g-grandparents were married in Davis Co, IA in 1862, "in the house of James LOSEY," according to their marriage certificate. It seems that her mother had re-married, to Mr Losey!

My information shows that the LOSEY, GRAY, and NANCE families left Davis County, IA, and went to the area around Sacramento Co., CA approximately in the 1870s.

I have found that Mary's mother was probably Ann E. Badger-Nance-Losey, the spelling of which had been changed to LOCY in the CA land records. I'm not 100% sure about the maiden name of Badger, but the land records for my great-grandfather contain affidavits from both Ann E. Locy and Joseph M. Nance.

Please e-mail me if you can help. Thanks. meganzack@yahoo.com

Grandmother was a Locy

I have no birthdate of my grandmother who's name was Ethal Ann Locy. She married Benjamin Sisler April 15, 1916 in Fairbury, Nebraska. I believe her parents were Jessie (Jesse,Jessy) Locy and Elizabeth Barnett Locy. Notes in the family bible say that Jessie and Elizabeth are buried in Jennings, Kansas. If you have any information on any of these people, I would love to hear from you. My father and I are very interesting in tracking down this family. Thank you.
Diane
