I do have photos of his from this period. If you can let me have your email address I can send you copies. I think i still may have email addresses of some relatives and a guy who did research on him. I am staying with my girlfriend but will be back home atfer the new year.

Ian

I am looking for more information about Col. (later General) Sir Peter Lodwick of the East India Company. He is credited with being one of the first Britons to reach the hill resort of Mahableshwar in 1824. Are you related to this gentleman?

Sandip Merchant, Bombay (India)

- I have done extensive research on LODWICK & LODWIG families in Great Britain. For the much greater part they originate in WALES and more particularly in WEST WALES.
LODWICK is a name in BELGIUM, and more particularly thr FLANDERS part of Belgium.
In the 1200s a group of immigrants came from Flanders to England and the King - Henry 1 or 2 ??? placed them in PEMBROKESHIRE, WALES to be an aggravation to the WELSH princes who would not accept the "ENGLISH" / NORMAN kings rule. In the 1200s Prince Llewelyn set upon these immigrants in Pembrokeshire and carried out a massacre. Survivors fled to other parts of Wales.
In the 1330`s during the reign of Edward 3rd a further group of immigrants agin from FLANDERS came to ENGLAND. They too were placed into PEMBROKESHIRE - the southern part around TENBY. It is said that among these immigrants were highly skilled weavers - perhaps weavers of silk.
The area of around Tenby is known to this day as "little England beyond Wales" where there is hardly any Welsh spen - and this is due to the above.
The name Lodwick has survived and I believe has nothing to do with explanations found in books on surnames by so called scholars in the subject.

I will submit the name alteration for them in the 1870 census. Was not aware of Pike county having an epidemic during that time frame, explains why I haven't gotten further with the remaining 7 children of John and Catherine (Hagey) Lodwick.

Ok, here is what I have found in the 1870 Locust Grove, Jefferson, Iowa census for our Lodwick's:

John and Catherine Lodwick [listed as Louder] with Stephen (9) and Orene (3).

To date, have been unable to find David R. in either the 1870 Pike, Ohio or Jefferson, Iowa censuses.

Nor have I found John Frederick in the 1870 Pike, Ohio census. He's in the 1860 and 1880 Camp Creek, Pike, Ohio censuses.

I have John & Catherine, Stephen and Rose (Andrews), David R. and Lucy Ann (Reno), and Orene in the 1880 Locust Grove, Jefferson, Iowa census.

As I stated above, John Frederick and Margaret Ann (Miller) are in the 1880 Pike, Ohio census.

John Frederick and family show up in the 1885 Batavia, Jefferson, Iowa census.

David R. and family are in the 1885 Bethany, Osborne, Kansas census.

I have not found Stephen and family or Orene in either of those.

As for Rose Zella's Andrews line, I have not found a tie in to my Andrew/s line. Now that I have more information on her parents and siblings, I will back track them to see if I can tie them in. I also have Anderson's in my Andrew/s line! My 3GGM, Susannah Anderson was married to my 3GGF, Harrison Andrew. So I won't be surprised if I do get to tie this family into mine. Will let you know what I find out.

It wasn't unusual to see a surving spouse remarry shortly after the death of their spouse. Most times it was to help raise their children or simply companionship as well as with the financials.

No, I really didn't think of doing a "fix" of the census, but it is a good idea. You said that you had found others of the family in 1880. I have only found Stephen and Orene still living at home and also David and John Fredrick. I assumed the other children of the family had died. Have you found any others? I read somewhere on the Net that Pike county was very disease ridden at that time, and if it is true and they lost 8 children, don't you wonder why they didn't move sooner.

And speaking of misspellings, I had been looking for years for proof of my great grandparents'marriage. A lady in California has the Wapello marriges books and she found that Stephen Lodwick married Rosa Anderson rather than Rose Zella Andrews. Is there any relationship between your family and the my Andrews? You probably know that Rose's mother married John Lodwick a month or two after Catherine died. It is an unseemly short period of mourning for John, but maybe he needed help with Orene, since she was crippled. If so. I wonder what happened to Orene after her father died. Sarah Ann Burnaugh Andrews Lodwick married two more times.
Joyce, We have and I am. I had computer problems a while back and lost my e-mail addresses for my genealogy correspondences.

Louder huh? No wonder I couldn't locate them, I was using lod* for my searches. I too think that John and family migrated from Ohio to Iowa in that time frame.

I don't ever recall my Grandmother Snyder telling me that LODWICK was changed from a different name. I haven't gotten too much into looking for more on John's father Henry just yet, I will be going back to Ohio next spring for my grandson's graduation and would like to drive over to Pike county and see what I can discover in their historical society.

I think that sooner or later, the census takers misspelled just about every surname in the USA. For instance, I couldn't find my Bartholomew family in the 1900 census until I ran a search with a birth year for one of the great aunts in Philadelphia and it came back spelled as Tholas!

I got to visit the West Point city cemetery while I was back home in 2008. Found my GGGP Nicholas and Laura (Bubb) Snyder's grave stones as well as some of the other Bubb/Snyder family members. Took some snap shots of the head stones and will get them posted on ancestry.com one of these days.

Any chance did you submit a name alteration for John Lodwick for the 1870 census? If not, let me know and I can (got a slow week in the office!)

Randy

Hello Randy,
I believe we corresponded a few years ago; aren't you originally from Keokuk? I am a descendant of Stephen Lodwick and have been mostly concentrating on that branch of the family. Are you the one who sent me the obit of John Fredrick? If not, I have that around here somewhere. I can also help you with the 1870 census. In Jefferson Co. Locust Grove Twp there is a John Louder, wife Catherine, son Stephen, daughter Orene. Page 149, Image 299. I think this is our grandparents. Orene is 3 and born in Ohio, so they must have moved to Jefferson Co between '67 and 70.
In our family there is a story that the family name was changed from Shultz to Lodwick for some reason. Have you ever heard this? The misspellings of the name in both the '60 and '70 census seem to be a funny coincidence.
Joyce

I descend through John and Catherine (Hagey) Lodwick's son John Frederick Lodwick and will share what I have if you are interested.

John, Catherine and family migrated to Jefferson County, Iowa from Pike County, Ohio after the 1860 census. Can account for most of them in the 1880 census for Jefferson county.

However, I have yet to find any of them in the 1870 census for either Pike County, Ohio or Jefferson County, Iowa. Could be that was the time frame that they were moving west.

I SEE PEOPLE WERE TRYING TO GET A HOLD OF ME BACK IN 2002.
MY FATHER WAS JOHN LEON LODWICK BORN IN PORTSMOUTH, OHIO IN 1925. HIS FATHER MOVED TO CALIFORNIA AND WAS A PRISON PREACHER UNTIL HIS DEATH. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE RECENT LODWICKS FROM OHIO AND/OR CALIFORNIA?

If you like you can reach me through the same name on here at aol.com
Mary

I hardly know where to begin. Edgar is my Grand Uncle, the third child and first son of Stephen Coil Lodwick and Rose Zella Andrews. My Grandmother and Edgar were both born in Kansas. Rose and Stephen were married in Jefferson Co. IA where Daisy their oldest daughter was born and then must have moved to Downs Kansas. By 1900 they are living in Roseville, IL. I have a lot more if you will tell me what you are interested in. I corresponded with a grandson of Edgars from Wapello for a while, but have not heard from him for some time.

This has come from me scanning in pictures from my mothers first photo album which was given to her by Col RWP Lodwick at Xmas 1930. At the time my grandmother was his house keeper and he was living in Camberley. There are various pictures of him circa 1930 and one of him in the uniform of a 2nd Lt in the Inverness Militia 1870-71. I think he was in the 28th regt of foot from 1875-1881. I also have photos of Leila and Peter Lodwick. If there are any relatives who would like scans of these please contact me.

Does anyone know if the names Lodewig and Lodewyck are related? An ancestor, Adriana Lodewig, wife of 'John' Kievit may have had a different last name originally. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1851 most likely in the Netherlands. Some members of the family eventually lived in Michigan.

I recently found my g-g grandfather listed in an 1860 Census record w/ his family as a 4 yr. old. It is spelled Ludwig by the census taker. His father's name is listed as Conrad age 48 born in Oh. and his mother an Elizabeth born in Pa. age 37 and another female a Susanna born in Oh. age 32, then the children are listed. The family next to them is a Nathan born Oh. age 24 and wife Catherine born Pa. age 24.There is also a Lorina age 33 born Oh. w/ children and a Lydia born Oh. age 47. This is the Mahoning County Austintown Twp. area. Mahoning County was created in 1846 from the southern parts of Trumbull Co. and the northern parts of Columbiana Co. The childrens names were Arlington,Wm.,Francis,Leah, Sally,Hetser,Abby. I hope this helps in searching for your line. There was also a Jonathan w/ Family later. My family was of Welsh decent and the area was a mining area at this time.

Lodwick/Ludwick

Conrad Lodwick was born in Pennsylvania about 1785. He married and had several sons (William, my ancestor among them) born there before moving to Trumbull County, Ohio, sometime before the 1820 Census. William married Polly Bowman in Trumbull County, in 1830. Their son Lewis was responsible for the name change to Ludwick. I am trying to locate Conrad's birth place in Pa. There were several Conrads located in Westmoreland County, but I don't know if they were related. Another possibility is the Cumberland County area. Any help or ideas appreciated.
