Lovely to hear from you Diane. I'm sorry to say that we know very little of Thom McNeilage other than that he was possibly a Scot, according to a family member. That person died late last year and so we can't ask him any other questions. If both Thom and Allan where from Livingstone then there is a very good chance they were related. Possibly a newpew or cousin. My mother-in-law is coming down for Easter. Thom's wife Christina was her mother's sister. I will ask her if she remembers any more. Problem is my mother-in-law came from Gwelo and didn't see much of her aunt and it's nearly 50 years since she left Africa, so it is testing her memory.

Obit of Abion F. Lombard (1842/ME-1907/WI), son of James Lombard and Isabella Currier

Obituary from the Stevens Point [WI] Weekly Journal of 30 Nov 1907
Albion F. Lombard, a resident of the county since 1850, died quite unexpectedly at the home of C. M. Kates at Custer at about 7:30 Friday evening. Mr. Lombard, who was unmarried, formerly lived at Arnott, where he kept a hardware store. After selling out there he lived for a time with a brother in Amherst but for some time has lived at the home of Mr. Kates, Mrs. Kates being a niece. He had been in poor health from heart trouble for seven years, and during the last six months had been troubled with hemorrhages of the stomach. On Friday Dr. Lindores, who had been attending him occasionally, received a letter saying that he was getting along very well but if asking if arrangements could be made for his admission to Mercy hospital. In the evening a telephone message stated that he was dead. He ate supper as usual about 6 o'clock and an hour later was taken with a severe hemorrhage and died in a few minutes. Mr. Lombard was born in Readsfield, Maine, October 7, 1842.
The funeral was held from the home of Mr. Kates Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Rev. Geberoff, of Amherst, officiating, interment followed in the Lombard cemetery in the town of Stockton.
Bio of Albion F. Lombard (1842/ME-1907/WI), son of James Lombard and Isabella Currier

Biography from the "Commemorative Biographical Record of the Upper Wisconsin Counties of Waupaca, Portage, Wood, Marathon, Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Langlade, and Shawane," (Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co, 1895), pp 54-56.
Albion F. Lombard. If the new and vigorous settlement at Arnott, Stockton township, Portage county, ever grows, its start on the road to prosperity will have been given it by A. F. Lombard. If the village does not thrive, it will be because Mr. Lombard's efforts in its behalf are not seconded. In other word, the subject of this sketch is a public-spirited citizen, zealous in advancing the interests of the community in which he lives, and thoroughly alive to the possibilities that might follow wise cooperation.
Mr. Lombard is the son of an early pioneer. The family of Lombards in this country have descended from three brothers who, many generations ago, came to the United States from the Island of Corsica and settled at Scituate, a small fishing town on the coast of Massachusetts. Albion F. was born at Readfield, Kennebec Co., Maine, October 7, 1842. His father, James Lombard, was born at Gorham, Maine, December 2, 1796, and the grandfather and great-grandfather were likewise both named James. The father (James) was reared at Gorham, and there apprenticed to a saddler and harness-maker by his stepfather. James Lombard opened a shop at Readfield, Maine where, September 7, 1817, he married Isabella Currier, born August 31, 1799, at Readfield, daughter of Samuel Currier, the leading physician of that village, whose practice years afterwards fell to his son George. James Lombard's health was failing at his trade, and he took up the study of medicine, preparing himself by a course at Bowdoin college. Practicing successfully at Readfield, Gorham, and Saccarappa, a suburb of Portland, Maine, Dr. Lombard in May, 1851, started with his family for Wisconsin. Coming by rail from Saccarappa to Buffalo, and by the lakes of the old "Wisconsin" from Buffalo to Sheboygan, they drove by team to Plover, where a son, Lewis, had preceded them. Dr. Lombard was a poor man, and sought a home away from the city where he might rear his large family. His children were James, Charles, Isabel, George, Lewis, Leonidas, Halbert, Orlando, Washington, Horace, Emily, Albion F., and Emma. Of these, George (a farmer of Stockton), Lewis (a farmer of Lanark township), Albion F., and Emma (now Mrs. Sydney Stevens, of Livingston, Mont.), are the only survivors. His first settlement was in Section 32, Stockton township, where Lewis had pre-empted 160 acres before the land was on sale, not receiving his patent until 1858. Dr. Lombard died on that farm in 1858, from the effects of a long-standing complaint. He was buried in a private cemetery on the farm, which in 1891 became public, and is known as "Lombard Cemetery." Dr. Lombard was an intelligent, well-read man, far above the average of the early settlers. In politics he was a staunch Democrat. By the terms of the will, the property was left to Albion F. and James, they to provide for the widowed mother, who survived until April 21, 1881, and was buried by the side of her husband.
Albion F. Lombard attended the Maine schools diligently till the journey west. For several years there were no schools in Stockton, but in the winters of 1860, 1861, and 1862, he attended terms on "The Prairie," under that old-time instructor, James Walker. After his father's death, he took charge of the farm. In 1863 many boy friends and acquaintances were enlisting in the army, and Albion F. was seized with a desire to become a soldier. He had about concluded to join the Seventh Wis. V. I., then stationed at Arlington Heights, in which an intimate friend, Michael Shortell, later killed on the Rappahonnock river, had enlisted, when his brother Horace returned from service and pleaded with him not to volunteer. It took the united efforts of the family a long time to keep the boy out of service. He must go somewhere, however, for the spirit of adventure was in his veins. In the lumber country, along the Big Eau Plaine river, he became cook for the crew of a big raft of lumber and shingles bound for the South. Starting March 25, 1863, the first division of the raft collided at Clint's dam, and one of the crew perished, others narrowly escaping. The second division, containing Mr. Lombard, passed in safety. At Rock Island, Ill., the raft struck one of the bridge piers in the Mississippi river and was considerably damaged; but by the aid of tug boats repairs were made, and the one million feet of choice lumber loaded with shingles, which the raft contained, reached Quincy, and the lumber was sold for $18 per thousand feet.
Receiving his pay, the young man started for Pike's Peak. Crossing the bridgeless Mississippi in a skiff, he reached St. Joe by rail, and staged it to Omaha. Impatiently waiting for a team to cross the Plains, he hired out to drive a team of four mules, hauling corn to Fort Laramie, Wyo., at forty dollars per month. He had to shell the corn himself, and started several days later. The wagon boss was brutal and insulting, and, after several clashes Mr. Lombard left him at Julesburg, Neb., obtaining his pay only after threats to sue. He had met trains bound for Denver at Fr. Kearney, and joining one of them, paid his passage by work. Proceeding by stage to Mountain City, near Central City, Colo., where he expected to find his brother, Washington, he learned that the latter had left for Idaho. Albion secured work as a laborer at a stamp mill, at $2.50 per day; then worked at a mine at $3 per day, and later at the Gregory Lode at $3.50 per day. His brother Horace joined him in the spring of 1865, and they worked as carpenters for a time, when Albion became foreman in a mine at California Gulch, Colo., at $3 per day in gold. Returning to Black Hawk, he, with his brother took a wagon train to Omaha. Here for a short time he worked for the Union Pacific Railway Company, and, work becoming scarce, hired out in the spring of 1866 as a laborer for the construction of the Union Pacific road at Columbus, Neb., 100 miles west of Omaha. One month of this work was enough, and returning to Omaha, he drove wagon to Denver, and mined during the summer. Back to Omaha, he went again in the fall to find his brother Horace doing contracting work, and hired out to him as a carpenter, being a great help to him in time of misfortune. During the winter of 1866-67 he hauled wheat to a mill twenty miles up the river from Omaha for Edward Creighton, afterward a multi-millionaire.
Hiring out on bridge construction for the Union Pacific Road in the spring of 1867, Mr. Lombard learned on reaching his destination that "no hands were needed." A company of soldiers passing en route to Cheyenne, where barracks were to e erected, he hired out to Col. Carlin for $100 per month. Six weeks later, because a comrade was discharged, he quit too, and did job work at Cheyenne for $10 per day. By fall he had saved several hundred dollars, and he returned to Wisconsin, where he spent the winter. Returning to Omaha in the spring, he was actively engaged in bridge and trestle building for the Union Pacific road as far west as Corinne, Utah. He witnessed the celebrated ceremonies attending the completion of the road, June 9, 1869, and soon after, learning of the death of his brother James, he returned to Stockton township, Portage Co, Wis., and took charge of the farm. He also engaged in the sale of agricultural implements and farm machinery. In 1890 he sold the "home farm," and erected several buildings at Arnott Station, doing much to establish and improved business at that point. There he erected the first potato warehouse, a building 40 x 60 feet, leasing it to Mr. Carley, who afterwards bought it. He also sold other buildings, and thus diversified the interests at the little station. His business in implements and farm machinery grew so rapidly that in 1893 he build a large warehouse, and he has since added a select line of hardware. His present stock would be a credit to a larger town. On April 22 1895 he met with a heavy loss by fire, amounting to some $3,500 on which he had an insurance for only $1,100; but in no ways discouraged, he has rebuilt, and has now an even finer place of business than was his old one.
In politics Mr. Lombard is an independent and votes for the best man. He is well-informed on matters of general interest, and is widely known. He possesses the full confidence and friendship of his wide circle of acquaintances, and a more popular and genial man it would be difficult to find. Sufficiently provided with worldly goods to make labor unnecessary, he enjoys life by building up the interests of the locality in which he lives.
Children of Susanna Catharina Lombard 1884 m. Lodewicus Jordaan & U/kn van Staden

I am looking for descendents of the children of Susanna Catharina Lombard, born 30 Jun 1884 Bloemfontein, South Africa, d/o Jacobus Marthinus Lombard and Anna Sofia Linde. She first married Lodewicus Jordaan about 1902 and they had 3 children: Anna Sofia, Christina Magdalena and Loewis.

Anna Sofia Jordaan was born 27 Feb 1903, possibly in Serowe, Bechuanaland, SA and died 13 Jun 1982 in Warwick, Qld, Australia. She married (1) Bertie William Cooper on 13 May 1926 and they had children Marjorie, William, Lilian and Memorie. She married (2) Oswald Burnaby Pike abt 1935 and has son Owsald.

Christina Magdalena Jordaan was born 28 Feb 1904 in South Africa. She married a man called Thom Mcneilage and they owned 2 hotels including the Fairmont, Livingston at one time. She was known as Mrs Mac to many. Christina was murdered in Gwelo June 1986, along with her workers, when her home was raided by Africans. She had no living children.

Louis Jordaan b. abt 1905. Little is known of him other than he lived in Livingston, married a lady called Anne or Anna and had 2 boys called Johnny and Freddie. It is thought that Johnny was a radio announcer in Johannesburg.

It is unknown where, when or how Lodewicus Jordaam died, but Susanna then married a man with the surname of van Staden. They had children Susanna, Koos and Katie. Dates and place of birth not known. There is some doubt that Susanna was a van Staden as it has been suggested that Susanna had another husband in between and Susanna was from this marriage.

Susan or Susanna abt 1907-10, surname unknown. Susan may or may not have been a van Staden. All we know of Susan is that she married Michael Murphy and had 2 boys called Thomas and Michael. Thomas was said to be a good diver but died after an accident in his late teens. Susan and her family lived in Salisbury. Susan was a dressmaker in Salisbury, mainly making wedding or evening dresses.

Koos (Jacobus?) van Staden born about 1909-1914. He lived in Livingston, married a lady called Kate and had 2 boys called Freddie and Hennie. Nothing else is know about him.

Katie van Staden died along with both her parents during the Flu epedemic about 1916. She is believed to have only been a baby at the time.

Susanna Catharina Lombard was said to have been on a trek with members of the Lombard family, heading for Rhodesia. Susanna and her van Staden husband along with daughter Katie died during the Spanish flu epidemic about 1916, along with a number of others in their party. The remaing children continued on to Livingston with their Lombard relatives.

I would love to make contact with any descendants of this family and hopefully find out what happened to them all and who they married. I would also love to find out more about Lodewicus Jordaan, when and where he died and possibly who his parents were.

Diane
Australia

hey there! I'm sorry I'm replying so late! I'm just noticing your message today. My grandmother Lorrine Lombard Fazzio passed away this December 20,2010 and while at her burial I was able to take photos of my Fazzio family's moseleum(sp?). These were the names on the headstones in St.Vincent dePaul cemetary in New Orleans. I do not recommend visiting the cemetary without an armed guard as an escort as it's locatyed in a very bad neighborhood. The names were: Rosalie Vusich Fazzio born Dec.22 1876 died Aug. 26,1964. Rosalie's children buried next to her are: Mary Fazzio died July 8,1926; Angelo Fazzio Sr. (might be her husband actually) died Oct. 14, 1927; Angelo Fazzio Jr. born Sept.2????? and died April 6, 1929; Antonio Fazzio born in Italy???died Aug. 5,1929; Joseph Fazzio born June 13, ????died Aug.19, 1929. I know there are some daughters names missing and I'm not sure where they were buried. I took photos of the headstones and will upload them if I can. If not, you are welcome to contact me at my email address:jgfh2835@yahoo.com I hope this helps! ;)

Hello Laurie;
I am replying to an old post, but I hope you are still looking in on occasion. My maternal GGfather is Edmund (aka Edward), W. Lombard, b. 1838/1841 in Sabattus, ME: d. Boston, MA, 1913. He married, Matilda Ann Van Ap(p)s, b. 1843 in Woodstock, NB, Canada; d. 1915, Boston, MA.
Their Children: William, 1861 - 1922; George W, 1865 - 1905; Edmond or Edward, b. 1869, m. Elizabeth J Small; Florence, b. 1873; Eldora, (my Grandmother), b. 1883, d. 1920.
Although I think Edmund's father was Wentworth Lombard, I am still unable to verify that connection to my satisfaction.
Does any of this information have a connection to your research?

Jessica,
I am trying to trace my mother's family tree. Their last name was Fazzio and they did spend time in Louisiana right after they came here from Sicily (they came here sometime between 1910-1919). My grandmother's name was Rosaria Fazzio and her parents were Sam (I'm sure this is short for something but I don't know what exactly)and Concetta Restivo Fazzio, I know he had a brother named Salvatore, and that they had relatives in the New Orleans area who remained there after Sam and Concetta moved to TX. I know they were in Dallas TX by 1935 for sure, but don't know when exactly they moved. This may or may not be your same family, but I would appreciate a response either way.. I know that it's really slim information to go on...

My Great, Great Grandmother was Sophie Lombard whose father was Nathaniel Lombard Jr. married to Abigail York. His father was Nathaniel Lombard Sr. married to Ruth Hamblen. Now I think his father was John Lombard who went to Gorham Maine from Barnstable Mass. I don't know who his wife or other children were. If anyone has any info, I would sure appreciate it. I also information that his was an Uncle to Butler Lombard if that helps.

Hi, I believe my Grandfather was one of the sons. he was also Cornelius Francois Lombard, born in the 1890's in East London. He married Maria Catharina (Miem) Aucamp and they had 5 children: Cornelius Francois(Boet), Maria Catharina(Katy), Johannes Karel(Hans), Petronella Magrietha (Nella) and then Johanna Alida (Joey). They moved to Springs, Transvaal somewhere in the 1930/40's. I know my grandfather had some siblings in East London and his brother's were Fred, Louis and Jan Lombard from East London. Looking forward to hearing from you as I believe he was the oldest son of your grandfather. Regards, Marietjie van Zyl, Pretoria

Re: Lombards in South Africa
marietjievz
Classification: Query
My grandfather on my mother's side is Cornelius Francois Lombard (Corrie) from East London (born in 1890's). He married Maria Catharina Aucamp and they had 5 children: Cornelius Francois(Boet), Maria Catharina(Katy), Johannes Karel(Hans), Petronella Magrietha (Nella) and then Joey Alida (Joey). They moved to Springs, Transvaal somewhere in the 1930/40's. I know my grandfather had some siblings in East London and his brother's were Fred, Louis and Jan Lombard from East London. Can anyone help - I am trying to find our Lombard relatives in East London? Also trying to trace the origin of Lombard family in SA. Thanks, Marietjie van Zyl, Centurion, Pretoria

I had a great uncle named Homer Lombard, his wife's name was Zella. They lived in Jamestown New York. Homer and Zella never had any children Homer was born in the 1880's (I would have to dig through some of my mom's old records). He had 2 sisters Mabel Elizabeth (my grandmother) and the other sister Florence Mildred. Their family originated from Massachusetts (I have some lineage on this family).

Just going through some of these posts on Lombard and see we have some of the same ancestors. I am looking for Ann D Lombard Ann was the daughter of Samuel Lombard and Charity Merrill. Samuel was the oldest son of the younger Solomon Lombard. Ann married Joseph Harmon and they had four children, their daughter Josephine married Alfred Burdwood. they were my great grand parents. I am having trouble trying to find out which marriage Ann is from. Samuel was married twice and there were 8 children from the first marriage. Most information does not list Ann with them. One piece of information does. No children are listed with the second marriage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
