Hi:

My mother who is St. Lucian is also the daughter of Charles H. Longely. I met your mother briefly when I was a child on vacation in St. Lucia. I believe our grandfather worked on the Balenbouche Plantation in St. Lucia (It is now a guest house and yoga retreat center).

Hi, My grandfather was also Charles Henry Longely and my mother(who is St. Lucian) is the half sister of Mrs. King, who i met briefly as a child. From what I understand he had three daughters while he lived in St. Lucia.
I do not know much about my grandfather's occupation other than he worked at the Balenbouche Estate in St. Lucia.
Hi,

I believe I found Frank Longley in the 1880 census in Lewiston,ME, living in the household of his widowed mother Lizzie. In 1870, the same family is found in Anson, Somerset Co, ME, this time the mother is called Elizabeth, and she is second listed... in the household of Isaac Getchell aged 60. My theory was that this was her father... and a google search resulted in me finding that a book was published in 1973 by Linda Longley entitled "The ancestors of David W Longley and His Wife, Elizabeth getchell, of Maine, and many of their descendants". The book is 73 pages long and appears to be available on Amazon.com.

A further search resulted in a web page that I believe may be taken directly from this volume, and is found here: http://www.ourfamilymatters.name/

This lists the family from David W Longley, all the way back. And it lists Frank and his wife among David's children. Of note is that David and his brothers, Jonah and George Milton, changed their surname from Langley to Longley sometime during the 1850s. They are indexed as Langleys at Solon, Somerset Co., Me., in the 1850 U.S. Census.

The family goes back to James Langley of New Hampshire, b.c1680. Therefore, it appears that yor grandfather is descended form the Langley family rather than from John Longley the Captive.

I hope this is helpful!

Kevin

Postscipt to previous post...

Mary (Crowley) Longley's middle name on her marriage record was Ellen. Frank Longley and Mary Ellen Crowley were married in Adroscoggin Co, Maine on Dec 23,1881, and record appeaqrs in both Lewiston and Auburn Maine.

Mary's death record further indicates she is buried in St Peter's Cemetery in Lowell.

Next step was to look at 1900 census records...

From Lowell,Mass on East Merrimack St in 1900 (Handwriting of the census enumerator is very poor):

Frank Longley b.Nar 1866 Maine
Mary Longley b.Jan 1867 Maine (could be 1864)
William Longley son b.Feb 1883 Maine
Anne Longley dau b.May 1885 Maine
David W Longley son b.Jan 1888 Maine
Isaiah Longley son b.Apr 1890 Maine

Mary's parents were listed as being both born in Maine, so that is where the search for Crowley family ancestors would resume. She is listed as having had 7 children, only four of whom were still living in 1900.

From Mass Death records:

Mary Longley, wife of Frank, daughter of Jeremiah and Ann (Levitt) Crowley, b.1864, died Jun 3,1904 at Lowell,Mass. Portland Maine is listed as Mary's birthplace, and the death record indicates her parents were both born in Ireland.

William Longley (David W Longley's brother) died Feb 23,1906 at Boston.

I'll see if I can track down Frank Longley in Maine in the 1880 census. (The 1890 census records were almost completely destroyed by fire)

Kevin
Aha!

This is a followup to my prior post...

I found the marriage record of David and Nellie.... David W Longley and *Lillian* Chateauneuf were married at Lowell,Mass on Oct 2,1906. It would appear that Nellie was a nickname.

The marrige record indicates David was born in Winslow,Maine in c1888, a son of Frank Longley and Mary E (Crowley) Longley. Lillian Chateauneuf was born c1889 in Lowell,Mass, daughter of Frank Chateauneuf and Rose (Larase) Chateauneuf. This confirms my prior guess that Nellie/Lillian was a daughter of the Francis and Rosalie that lived on Clark St in Lowell in 1910.

I can easily take this further now.... but want to give you time to absorb and confirm whether you agree these are your ancestors.

Kevin

Hi,

I think I found some interesting info for you.

First, Texas Deaths Database on Ancestry.com record the death of Walter David Longley on May 25,1955 at Garden City, Glassock Co, Texas. He was an airman, born Sep 9,1920 in Massachusetts. He is buried at Walker AFB, New Mexico. His residence at the time of his death was Chatham City, Savannah Co, Georgia.

1930 Census Records in Lowell, Middlesex Co, Mass record the following family in Ward 2, District 87, living at 22 Common Street:

David Longley 42 widower, born Maine
Lillian Longley 22, dau, b.Mass, parents born ME and Mass.
Alice Longley 18, dau, b.Mass, parents born ME and Mass.
William Longley 15, son, b.Mass, parents born ME and Mass.
Walter Longley 9, son, b.Mass, parents born ME and Mass.

This is a just a high probability of being the same Walter, but may be confirmed by other family members you may know.

I could not find the family in 1920 census records, but 1910 census records for Lowell Ward 6, show the following family living on Clark Street:

David W Longley 22, born Maine
Nellie Longley 21, wife
Charles Longley 3, son
Lillian Longley 2, dau

Searching Massachusetts births, I found the following children born to David Longley and Nellie (Chateuaneuf) Longley:
Charles Leo Longley, b. Lowell Mar 25,1907
Lillian Mary Longley, b. Lowell Apr 1,1908
Alice Longley, b. Lowell Aug 24,1911
William E Longley, b. Lowell Feb 15,1915.

Mass birth records online only go to 1915. Also, Lillian's name is also recorded under the name of Viraconda Longley in another Mass record.

Finally, On Clark Street, just two residences away, in the 1910 census in Lowell, is a Chateauneuf family consisting of Francis Chateauneuf 51 and Rosalie Chateauneuf 46, and three adolescent children. They were both born in "French Canada", and I think it highly likely they may be parents of Nellie.

My guess is that Nellie died as a result of Walter's birth, but she may have died anytime in the 1920's up to the census date of Apr 4,1930.

I could not find a marriage record for David and Nellie, nor could I find David's birth record which might connect him back further, but I can look further. Just wanted to get this info to you as soon as I could.
Hi James

The West Yorkshire Parish records have recently been put on Ancestry and I have looked there but still can't find the baptism of my James born 1811 or your Joseph born 1813. So you might want to have a look yourself (if you haven't already).

Also, if you look on the familysearch.org website, there is a baptism of a Joseph Longley at Morley on 13 Dec 1835 to parents Joseph Longley and Mary. But the interesting thing is that his birth date is given as 26 March 1813. Could he be your bedstead manufacturer Joseph? I know that he married Rachel Clough in 1836 so was he getting baptised the year before his marriage for some reason?

If you live in Yorkshire maybe you could also try the West Yorkshire Archive Service in Wakefield?

If you want to contact me direct perhaps we could swap info on any progress we make?

Regards

Judith

Certainly been a lot of James's since anyway, 4 out of the last five, me my gather and g grandfather!

Yours

James

Hi James

Are you in contact with Clive Palmer in New Zealand as I know that he is also a direct descendant of Joseph Longley from the Bedding Manufacturer family?

My GGG Grandfather, James Longley, was born in Morley in 1811. I know that your Joseph was born in Morley in 1813 and have long suspected that my James and your Joseph could be brothers but I can't prove it.

Another reason that I suspect we are related is that my Great Grandfather, Bertie, attended a funeral of someone from the Bedding Manufacturer family (the family story goes that this was a relative of his).

So I would be interested to hear if you have found the baptism of Joseph born 1813.

Judith

Essentially, I am a direct descendant of the founder, Joseph being my ggggrandfather.

From where in and around Leeds are yours? The family plot is in Batley and I think we have some roots in Morley but in the last 4 generations you are looking at Potternewton and Chapel Allerton mainly......

James

Hi there,

I don't know if we're related to Joseph Longley Bedsteads, and that's one of the other lines that I am exploring. Given when they started trading in the early 19th century, and my knowledge of my tree (mainly builders) I think it possible but unlikely.

Thanks,

Ed.

As I have Longleys who emigrated to Canada I had a look to see if this was one of mine. Not so but I did find some information which may help you.
The marriage took place in the September 1909 quarter in the Middlesbrough District between George Edward Longley and Eva Jane Wardle.
George was born in Stockton-on-Tees of George Longley, a boiler smith and Mary Ann. From the 1901 census George was 50 and his wife 49. They were both from Huddersfield, Yorkshire. In the census with them were their children Arthur 27, George E 20, Lizzie 17, David 14 and Fred 12. All the children show as born in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham.
There was a marriage registered in Huddersfield in December quarter 1871 between George Longley and Mary Ann Collingwood which may be the parental one but as with all this it needs to be investigated. It is just stuff taken off the Internet at this stage, although I think I have it correct.
John Chant

I'm replying to an old post, but the St Alban's has struck something in me. I am researching Longley from Ontario. I do have a border crossing, though, where one of my Longley's was going to St. Alban's, VT. I haven't researched the document too thoroughly, so not really sure of much else. I will dig it out, and if you get an email reminder about this post, please do reply and let's see if you have a connection with my husband through your Canadian Longley's.

Andrea

Does anyone have any information on this Edward Longley? I think he may be a relative... Parent to my Grandmother. My Grandmother: Mary Cecilia Longley (Longley changed to Langlois at age 12) born 11-22-24. Parents Edward Longley and Mary Isabella (Coghlan) Longley.
