Thank-you for the kind offer, but no need.

I can clear up the Poyntz mystery (which drove me bonkers for a while). He was named after a very distant cousin, Newdigate Poyntz.

The Lords were a well-off family of churchmen. It seems that they were well off in large part because of fortunate marriages. John Lord, the Rector of Toddington, married a Martha Crawley.

The Crawleys were a wealthy family of doctors. The Crawleys and the Poyntzes were cousins by marriage through the Taverners (another well to-do family). The Crawleys were the heirs to the Symcotts family fortunes, and when Thomas Crawley died he left his money to John Lord of Drayton Parsow, the husband of his cousin, Martha Crawley.

Newdigate Poyntz was a good friend of both Thomas Crawley and John Lord. The latter named a son after him. That Newdigate became Charles Lord's father and John Poyntz's grandfather.

And, yes, as near as I can tell, Newdigate Poyntz was named after his ancestor Captain Newdigate Poyntz (great, great grandfather).

Cheers!

Yes I did. I have traced the line back to Thomas Lord (?1570-1640). The line looks like this:

Thomas Lord (?1570-1640) = Persis Hopkinson
John Lord (1615-1681) = Priscilla Norman
John Lord (1649-1728) = Patience Baskerville
John Lord (1671-1751) = Martha Crawley
John Lord (1712-1778) = Mary Alston
Newdigate Lord (1745-1825) = Frances Hassells
Charles Lord (1779-1846) = Barbara Underhill Amphlett
John Poyntz Lord (1829-1875) =	(1) Caroline King
(2) Emma King/Willmer

I cannot find out why JPL was given the name Poyntz - I can find no trace of it in his line. It might have been inspired by the name Newdigate, as Newdigate Poyntz was a Civil War general.

If you want more details about marriage dates etc i can let you hav ethem - send me an email address.

David Pepper

James parents were William & Louisa and Williams parents were Walter & Mary from Langham Suffolk.
Prentice was one of about 20 children and I have found out some information on most of them.
It would be really good to exchange information and see if we could fill in some of the missing pieces in each others tree so far.
Kind regards
Glenda Lord

GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A.

I've come to the belief that Francis was born in 1647 and was the son of John and his 1st wife Rebecca. I believe her father's name was Francis, and that would fit as the namesake. While I have nothing hard, I've found nothing to contradict it either, and to me it makes better sense of John's life events that transpired thereafter.

Lord family - Lancashire to Newcastle upon Tyne

I'm trying to trace Samuel Lord, born c.1835 who married Mary Ellen Dewrance (lots of different spellings - durance, durrance). His father was John Lord and he was a Mason. Mary's father was Thomas Dewrance and was a gardener. Samuel and Mary married in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1858 and had three children (Elizabeth c.1859, Mary c.1861 and Matthew Dewrance c.1867). I can find Samuel Lord on 1871, 1881 and 1891 census but am unable to find either Samuel or his father John prior to this on the 1841, 1851 or 1861 census. Samuel was born in Rochdale but after spending two days in register office I am still unable to trace him. Can anyone help?
