I just came across your inquiry from Mar 2011 about Jane Thompson Devlin, born 9 Dec 1914 to William and Jennie Devlin. I also have been trying to find out more about her, but she's quite elusive! I found info on about her marriage to Richard E. Loughborough 30 Apr 1940. I found photos from her 1932 high school year book from Hyde Park in Chicago, and I found her listed as "lost alumni" from the Class of 1936 at Rockford College in Rockford, Ill. Have you learned anything new in the past year? I also found a similar version of William's death that you sent me; this one was from the golf course newsletter where he died. Hope to hear from you! Again, my email is clw@earthlink.net.

I am trying to learn more about R. Loughborough who married Jane Devlin. This couple were living in Chicago in 1945 when Jane's father died. There must be some family around.
selainee@hotmail.com

There were several families with this surname in the same part of Philadelphia at the same time and, if Margaret and William H. were not siblings, surely they were cousins. I know from an obituary that Margaret's father and mother were Andrew and Sarah, but I haven't be able to tie her to siblings.
My Great Grandmother Sophia Landenberger had a sister Amelia who married a William H. Luffbarry of Philadelphia in 1870. He was 27 at the time making his birth year around 1843. My guess would be that he was Margaret's little brother.

I am descended from Margaret White nee Luffberry who was the daughter of Andrew Luffberry (a ship builder) and his wife Sarah. She was born (1836), married (1858) and died (1886) in Philadelphia. Andrew and Sarah also lived in Philadelphia.

I've noticed that the last name is sometimes Lufberry and sometimes Luffbarry.

I ran into one web reference that said an Andrew Luffberry lived in NYC for a year with Isaac Loofbourrow.

I am wondering if anyone on this Board has encountered data on Lluffberry in Philadelphia in the 1800s.

Catherine, b. 1794, m. Benjamin Leek

That's an interesting thought; I hadn't considered that. The information that was passed along from my great-aunt would seem to proclude that, but I wouldn't want to rule it out entirely. All the more reason for trying to find information on Isaac's children.

FWIW, here's what my great-aunt had on the children of Isaac Loofborrow and Susannah Stivers:

Hannah; b. 8 Sep 1789.
Horace; b. 23 Jun 1791.
Catherine; b. 16 Jul 1794; m. Benjamin Leek; m. (--?--) Ayres.
Thomas W.; b. 10 Feb 1796; d. 7 Aug 1797.
Isaac; b. 17 Oct 1797; d. 19 Jun 1798.
Jeremiah; b. 22 Apr 1800.
Susanna; b. 4 Sep 1803.
Mary; b. 18 Sep 1805.
Martha; b. 16 Jul 1807.

Catherine Loofborrow and Benjamin Leek had three daughters that I know of: Susanne, b. 9 Feb 1812, m. _____ Almindinger; Mary, birthdate unknown; and Catherine Ann, b. NY City, Dec. 1821, m. William Oliver Ford, d. Richmond, VA, 11 Aug 1892.

My earlier message regarding Isaac was a little misleading; I do have a little more information about him than Mulford gives, I only meant that it didn't turn up online. Well, one thing: I think he's the Isaac that is shown in the 1790 census in Westchester County, NY. I have learned from the Manhattan city directories that he was in the city at least as early as 1800, and that he was a schoolteacher and worked occasionally as a shoemaker. The last few years before his death, he's listed as a "collector," I presume a tax collector of some sort.

Thanks! I look forward to checking out your web site.

Lindsey Bourne
Richmond, VA

lindsey@compuserve.com

Thanks--I can well appreciate what a job putting a comprehensive web site together would be.

I haven't found anything on Catherine Loofborrow in the online databases here or anywhere else, and nothing on Isaac, either, that is not in Mulford. The only links I have come from (a) my great-grandmother's family Bible, which lists her among Isaac's children with a birth date that fits in very neatly, and (b) the fact that Catherine Leek, widow of Benjamin, was residing in the household of Isaac Loofborrow in 1831, according to the Manhattan City Directory.

Lindsey Bourne
Richmond, VA

lindsey@compuserve.com

Where is your web page, Rick? I'd be interested in checking it out.

Would you happen to have information on any of the children of Isaac Loofborrow and Susannah Stivers? Isaac was the son of Simon Loofborrow and Jane Wilson; Simon was the son of John Loofborrow and Abigail Wade.

I am descended from Isaac's daughter Catherine, who married Benjamin Leek (and later remarried someone whose surname was Ayers). Catherine is not listed among Isaac's children by Edith Mulford, but I'm reasonably sure she does fit in that family.

Lindsey Bourne
Richmond, VA

lindsey@compuserve.com

Loofbourrows in Virginia

There is a branch of the family descended from John Loofbourrow and Hannah Bunn who ended up in Virginia.

Wade Loofbourrow, the eldest son of John and Abigail (Wade) Loofbourrow and grandson of John Loofbourrow and Hannah Bunn, was born in Perth Amboy, NJ about 1717 and died in Harrison County, VA (now WVa) after 1790, according to Edith Loughborough Mulford in one of her articles on the family in the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey (Sept. 1961, Vol. 36 No. 3). Here is part of what she had to say:

"He [Wade Loofbourrow] moved with his eldest son, John Wade Loofbourrow, who was a Baptist Minister, to Clarksburg, Harrison Co., Va., now West Va. The 3 known sons of Wade Loofbourrow were among the early pioneers who opened the West: John Wade, Jonathan, and David."

Sounds like these are good candidates for ancestors of yours, but what you really need to do is to start with your grandfather and work backwards.

Incidently, I, too, am descended from John Loofbourrow and Abigail Wade, but through another of their sons, Simon, who did not come to Virginia, even though that's where I happen to have been born.

Lindsey Bourne
Richmond, VA

lindsey@compuserve.com

Lufberry/Lofberry

Hello,

I am not sure how or why the spelling of the name changed, but there were Loofbourrows in New Jeresy in the 1700s who descended from a Thomas Loofbourrow born June 6, 1690. He became the owner of a mill property in Monmouth County. This mill eventually paaed to one of his sons named, Matthew. In deeds, census records and various documents this son was Mathias Lofberry, Matthew Lufbrow or Loffberry. Matthew lived in Middleton, New Jeresy and married Sarah Stillwell. They had 4 children including John III Luffboro. John married Ann Boerum and among their children was Richard Lufburrow or Loveborough who married Ann Taylor. John and Ann had a son named Edward Taylor Lufburrow who married Rachel Winter. They were the parents of Andrew Winter L, born July 6, 1868.
This data came from the book written by Milton R. Lufburrow in 1953 and you should try to find a copy in a library. If you want to contact me just e-mail: ololodi@aol.com

Good Luck,
Susan

Dear Stuart:
As I said in a reply to Kelly, you must find a copy of the book by Milton R. Lufburrow on "Loofbourrow - loofboro - loughborough - Lufburrow Geneaology." Your grandfather is ;isted on page 68 -- Showing that his parents were Nathan Loughborough Jr born Dec. 5, 1813 and Ann Henry Rose. They had 13 children including Augustine born Nov. 18, 1852. The information in the book on your line is quite extensive, so if you are unable to find the book you should e-mail me and I could arrange to mail you photocopies on the section on you ancestors.

Milton Lufburrow's book was published in 1953 and I was able to locate a copy at the New York City Public Library in the main branch where there is a genealogical collection.

I hope this helps -- Good Luck!
Susan

Dear Kelly,
You must try to obtain a copy of the book written by Milton R.Lufburrow and titled, "History of Loofburrow, Loofboro, Loughborough and Lufburrow Family". I first found a copy in the genealogocal collection of New York City's main branch of the public library. Eventually I was able to track down one of the daughters of the author and she graciously made a copy of the book available to me.

If you cannot locate the book, please let me know and I will share sections/information that would be of interest to you. My mother's family spelled their name, Luffborough, but there is no doubt that we (all spellings) are part of the same family. You may want to check for Loughboroughs in phone books for Utah and California. The great thing about this name is that it is so unusual that if/when you find a Loughborough you know you have found someone related -- although it may be a distant relation.

Don't give up, Good Luck!
Susan
