Mary Hagen probably already has informed you years ago but my great grandfather Perry Loughrey was one of John's brothers. At one time in the 1850s they all lived on the Root River near Chatfield Minnesota on the land that my father grew up on. From what I remember John moved on to Colorado. The Carolinas does not sound right to me - Iowa or Ill. would be a better state for John's birth.

My grandfather William Loughrey was born in Derry about 1876 and was the son of Patrick Loughrey and Catherine Beattie both born about 1843. I have heard that the family (Loughrey) were originally from Rathmullan, however, haven't been able to trace anything more. Any possible help would be appreciated. Many thanks,
Brendan Delaney

Within a couple of weeks of corresponding I deducted that this guy was running a scam...he wanted to bless me with his good fortune. Please anyone on these list need to be aware of these scams.
I know this is off topic but I had to warn you all.

Do you know if you had McCaffery in your line? My great grandmother had an uncle Edward McCaffery who died in Philadlephia 1908 and she submitted an obituary asking the California papers to copy. I found that Bridgits parents where Bernard Loughery and Margaret McCaffery living in Ruskey in 1891. Edward McCaffery's parents John McCaffery and Maggie Kelly.

I saw this old 2002 post and had a little info to help out but the poster's email address is no longer good so I'm putting it in here. Here is her original post:
I'm looking for information about my great great grandmother's parents, William Loughrey and Eliza Steele. I know that they were born in PA abt 1829 and 1830. They moved to VA, to IA, to CA where they settled. Their daughter Mary Francis was born 19 Feb 1868 in IA. Different records spell the name differently: Laughrey, Loughery, Lougherey, and Loughrey. Other children: Alison, b. 1852, VA; Ema, b. 1854, VA; Charles V., b. 1856, IA; Annie Eliza, b. 1858, IA; Joseph, b. 1866, IA; Ellen M., b. 1872, IA; Amelia, b. 1873, CA.Thank you in advance for any clues you can provide.

My answers: William Loughrey and wife Eliza are buried in Pomona Cemetery and Mausoleum, Pomona, CA (see Find a Grave for headstone photos). Their daughter Emma M. Loughrey b. 1854 was one of two of the first young schoolteachers for Central School in Pomona and married 1878 Senator Joseph E McComas, a much older man and they had 3 children together: Rush McComas b. 8 Aug 1878 CA, Maude Pearl McComas b. 23 Dec 1879 and Mary Ethel McComas b. 18 July 1885.

The daughter Annie Eliza b. 1858 is also buried in Pomona Cemetery as Annie Eliza Mitchell. She married a James L. Mitchell. See this bio for more information on her son:
ALLEN G. MITCHELL
A rising lawyer of Pomona, with offices in the Investment Build-
ing, in association with J. A. AUard, where he is becoming a potent
factor in the various cases from this section of Los Angeles County,
Allen G. Mitchell is well known to the citizens of Pomona and
environs. A son of the late James L Mitchell, who is mentioned on
another page of this history, he was born at Montesano, Chehalis
County, Wash., May 25, 1894. His mother, a native of Iowa, was
in maidenhood Anna Loughrey, and is still living here.

Allen G. attended the public schools of Pomona and finished in
the high school, soon after which he began to read law, and in time
was admitted to the bar; then he entered the law school of the Univer-
sity of Southern California and was graduated with the class of '18.
Prior to his graduation he was for eighteen months connected with the
Los Angeles Board of Trade. On April 16, 1918, he enlisted in the
Naval Reserves and was released from active service on December 13,
that year. In August, 1919, he took up his present law association
with Joseph A. Allard, Jr., and since then has had his share of the law
business of Pomona and vicinity.

Mr. Mitchell was united in marriage on October 4, 1916, with
Miss Elva Farrar, a native daughter, born in Ventura County, and
they have a daughter, Margaret Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell is interested
in all projects that have for their aim the betterment of conditions for
the people of this Valley, as well as the building up of the interests
of the Vallev itself.

The Pomona Public Library has some digitized photos online of Senator Joseph E McComas and his wife Emma M Loughrey McComas. Also great biosketches available online through a Google Book Search.

My great great grandfather was Bernard Loughrey married to Margaret McCaffrey. Bernard was born about 1830(+-)found living in Castlefinn, Co. Donegal in 1864 in LDS film. In the obituary for my great grandmother (Bridget Loughrey McGlynn) husband John V. McGlynn in 1890 they are mentioned living in Riskey (perhaps a mis-spell for Rooskey). A dead search in Dublin by a distant relative mentions property in Sessesgahlong being transfered upon his death to his wife Margaret McCaffrey and after hers to Margaret Loughrey McGranahan. Would appreciate learning more on Patrick Loughrey and if you feel my Bernard Loughrey could be the Bernard you mentioned as son of Patrick Loughrey

My husband's great-great grandparents were John Loughrey and Caroline Walker. Their son Earl Kellogg Loughrey was his maternal great-grandfather.

My husband's grandmother, Verna Julia Loughrey, told me she remembered her grandmother Caroline. "She liked to turn herself around," she told me. His grandmother told me that John and Caroline lost a baby while they were moving by wagon and had to bury the baby on the prairie.

Today I found her parents' names in the Iowa census records of 1850 and 1860. Her father was Daniel M. (born ca. 1795) and her mother was Betsey (born ca. 1797 in Va.) There are conflicting records of his birth place. Two of three records say South Carolina and one says North Carolina. Do you have any more details about this family?
Thank you,
Lynn

Also have death cert. of James and William(1896)and Ellen(1891) death dates. I don't know if these are correct or where I got them, it's been a while.

Sorry for the delay but I've been out of town etc. I can direct you to some of the actual sites on Ancestry.com that have my relatives death certificates, etc etc. I would love to compare notes since there was a Margaret who came to the U.S. with a son Joseph and a daughter Maggie and they seem to fit. But, I need to confirm. I do have a obit for my great uncle Michael that lists the brothers and sisters and will help you tell if we are in fact related. I hope so! You can email me directly at peterson.beverly@gmail.com if you like.

Does anyone have a copy of the 1923 book by Julia Ann Jewett titled "The Loughrey Family......"? If yes, is there a Margaret that matches the little bit I know? Or any other leads?

Beverly, Just popped in after being away from it for a while, all my LOUGHREY ancestors come from around Moville, Inishowen. I was curious about your LOUGHERY connections, I have been looking for a JOHN LOUGHREY who apparently died in SAN FRANCISCO in 1917, (according to BEN PALMERS website) JOHN was my great uncle, he had many brothers,Neil Joseph, Denis,Edward, Charles, Michael Joseph, Hugh, James Patrick, Patrick Leo, and sisters Mary, Catherine B, Teresa J, and Margaret. all born between 1872 and 1895. I would be happy to exchange any details I have with you.

Obviously it's been a couple of years since you placed this post - but we're all on some other 'timeline' when it comes to discovering and rediscovering relatives we may never have head of until a month ago or so. Do you have a Michael or Joseph in your search? Our Great Uncle Michael came over in 1899 on the Majestic. Joseph (My grandfather) came over before 1912 and helped Michael come over. I think there was an another brother named John.
