An Asa Raymond from Scotland ancestry landing in Nova Scotia Canada is in my family tree as greatgreat grandfather with father of ASA also. Don't think there is a connection as most family was from Nova Scotia to Boston Ma area or stayed in Canada. The Scots were given land to own in NS if they developed it to run French out of area.
Hi, my grandfather was William David Lovejoy of whom very little was known apart from he was born in NZ and came to Australia around 1911. I recently was given a note book in which my grandfather wrote about his early life in NZ mentioning school mates names and different places he lived(Mataroa,Mangaweka,Mangatinoak). He mentions his father, mother and a brother (who was badly burned in a gunpowder explosion while working on the railway) but not by name.Dockery's are mentioned as brickmakers from Greytown.I havent found his birth cert. but got his marriage cert. and he lists his father as Alfred Lovejoy (farmer)and mother as Anne Dockery.

Any information to help further my research would be greatly appreciated.

Yasmin

My great grandmother Evelyn Pearl Bradeen was the daughter of David F Bradeen and Minnie Estelle Lovejoy. After her mother died, Evelyn went to live with David's brother Phineas and his wife in Lawrence Massachusetts. It would seem that after her divorce from David, Minnie married Benjamin Hamlin but died shortly after that (1897)...probably in childbirth

David passed away in 1913 after being hit by a train, and Evelyn died while giving birth to my grandmother in Peabody massachusetts in 1915.

David and Phineas' parents were Isaac Atwood Bradeen and Mary Tolman. Minnies parents were Elbridge W Lovejoy and Adaline Hichborn.

I'm looking for any information on these individuals and/or any existing photographs that may be shared. Any information is appreciated and I certainly can share what I have.

Thanks, Kim

Thanks! Yes, I erred. Elizabeth was married to Samuel, not Stephen. Their first child was Stephen. And I think Nancy was their second child. If this is true, that she was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth, then her other siblings were William, Betsy, Pamela, Samuel and Abgbott. This Samuel (the son, brother to Nancy) was born Sep 1798 in Milford, NH and died 19 Mar, 1884. Does the Samuel you have match this family? Good to hear from you. Thanks.

I'm also looking for Lovejoys in the NH area. I've reached a brick wall. According to the 'Memorials of Descendents of William Shattuck' p. 205 (Ancestry.com) Nancy was born Mar. 4, 1781 in Pepperell, Mass and died on Dec. 25, 1821 in Milford, NH at age 40 years, 9 months and 21 days, which matches with that birthdate. She died Christmas day, not quite two years after the birth of her last and 13th child, Alvira.

However, her tombstone inscription from the Elm St. Cemetery in Milford, NH that says she died on Christmas day 1822, one year later than above. The age is given as the same, which would make her born on March 4, 1782, a year later. She married Amaziah Shattuck and had 13 children. He is buried beside her in Milford.

My best guess is that she is the child of Stephen Lovejoy and Elizabeth Eliot, as they were the only Lovejoy family having children in Pepperell at that time, and there is a slot in their family where she would fit. Have been through the original records (Mormons) and can't find her birth. Her mother Elizabeth Eliot was born in Mason, NH.

It doesn't seem anyone else can find her parents either. Any help from descendents would be so very much appreciated. Have been working on this for years.

Donna (semporna@mindspring.com)
Tyler Perkins Lovejoy b.1826 Rindge N.H.

Tyler P. Lovejoy was born in Rindge N.H. although his birth state is shown as Massachusetts on the 1850 & 1860 census. He moved to Louisiana in 1851 and is listed on the 1860 Avoyelles Parish Census living in the household of John G. Wilson working as a carpenter. In 1876 his brother Henry Clay Lovejoy writes in his journal about a visit he made to a sugar plantation in St. Charles Parish where Tyler is working as overseer. They went to New Orleans for the weekend where Tyler had a home with a "mistress" and 4 children. Tyler does not show up on any other census records. There is no other information available on ancestry about him. Any information would be welcome.

Ahaa....I discovered an old postcard made of the first picture I posted today (see attached).... It's a labeled "Chalmers A. Lovejoy group" and does have some writing beneath it [I assume from Chalmers' granddaughter (Fred S Lovejoy's daughter), Florence Irene Lovejoy who was the family's keeper of the records for many years...thanks Aunt Florence!].

The caption reads:
"Chalmers Lovejoy X
left is fred, pearl & Billy (Brothers
to Chalmers Jennie Lovejoy Canet
& Rene Canet"

Obviously, Chalmers is in the middle with the X. This picture is not nearly as clear as the first posting but it does have some captioning which is nice to have--at least it identifies 6 people in the picture. Still looking for the remaining 5.

Rochell

The emigrant Lovejoy was John Lovejoy (born in London in 1622) who immigrated to North America between 1630 and 1635. There were also several previous Lovejoys in England. Halsey's great-grandfather, John, was an Episcopalian minister in Rindge, New Hampshire, who signed the "Association Test" that the British government required American residents to sign to pledge their allegiance to the King (as did John's son, John II). There were two Lovejoys between the immigrant John and the John who signed the "Association Test." The Lovejoys began moving west right after the Revolution - to Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, and points even further west. I've found Lovejoy cousins in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, and California. There is a long history of Chalmers Lovejoy descendents in Cherry County, Nebraska (I think one of our Lovejoy cousins runs a "bed and breakfast" inn in that area even today.

Steve, Thanks for the information. I always thought Grandpa was born in 1880. I do remember now that it was a January birthday. But it was 1879, good to know. I thought the Lovejoy's were here before the American Revolution. My mom did talk about Grandpa's (H.R. Lovejoy 3rd) having a daughter Ellen who lived in Los Angeles and had a son named John. I do remember the day in 1968 that Grandpa died. So he was 89, almost 90. Smoked from the time he was 13, about 2-3 packs a day. And he still lived to be that old. My older brother had terrible ear infections and Grandpa used to blow smoke into his ear to warm it and ease the pain. We did not know about second hand smoke then. Thank you for the corrected information.

Apparently, Ellenor B. (Halsey the younger's daughter) married a man named John Schott (or Scott). Ellenor and John had a son named John.

Gail, as you stated, Halsey R. Lovejoy (Jr.), born in 1859, died (apparently in California) in 1885, when Halsey (the third) was only about 6. Ellen Lovejoy was born on 4 Apr 1883 apparently in Los Angeles. Halsey (the one born in 1879), who married Iva Mae, named his daughter Ellenor B. (b. Apr 1900 in Iowa). Unsure when Ellenor passed away (or Ellen). The father (b. 1859) married Elizabeth Stevens in 1878 (when Elizabeth was only 18). Was the younger Halsey adopted by the Stevens family?

Apparently, a local chapter of the NSDAR did some research on the Halsey Riley Lovejoy line (in Volume 15 of their records), and determined that Halsey Riley Lovejoy was born in Des Moines on 26 Jan 1879. He is also documented in the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses, as well as the Iowa state censuses in 1885, 1895, 1915, and 1925 (all in Des moines). He died, as you probably already know, on 29 Dec 1968 in Portland OR. He married Birdie sometime before 1923.

Rochell,

Not sure the answer. I do know that my great-grandfather, Halsey R. Lovejoy (b. 1859) died very young. My grandfather Haley R. Lovejoy the third had a sister Ellen.
(He later named his daughter the same.) When both parents died young Ellen was adopted and my grandfather was sent to stay with distant family members. They did not want him adopted because they did not want to lose the family name.

Because my grandfather was orphaned at such and early age (8-9) a lot of facts have been lost. I do have a written history my Aunts, Winnie or Ellen had compiled, that has been misplaced my a relative of mine. I will once again see if she has found the papers.
Gail

Hi Steve, My grandfather, Halsey Riley Lovejoy the 3rd was born in 1880 not 1879. At least that is what I was told. Can not say I have any proof. He did marry Iva Mae Hodson. Then later married Birdie Ethel Rogers, (my grandmother)
His son is my Uncle Halsey R. Lovejoy, my first cousin is Halsey R. Lovejoy, and he has a son names the same, so yes, there are six. Halsey Riley Lovejoy the 3rd had 4 children,
Ellen, Winnie, Halsey R. and Miriam Elizabeth. Miriam was my mother. She passed away March 12, 2010 in Keizer, Oregon.

Gail Brannen
