LOWE family, Devon- Actors?

Mary Emma LOWE was born to Eliza Lowe in 1853 at the Newton Abbott Workhouse in Devon. Therefore I know little of her background.

However Mary Emma became an actress with the stage name of Emma Rivers and married an actor Harry CANE. In the 1891 census they left their children with a family together with a Frederick Lowe [b.c.1871]. This gave me hope that Emma may have been in touch with her Lowe family.

The other possible link is the LOWE family of actors. They were well known as pantomimists as were Harry and Emma in the 19th century in the UK.

I would be interested in sharing information and knowing of any resources regarding these families.

Thanking you
Beth in sunny Sydney

Lowe Family in SW AR, NE Texas,

I am looking for information about my family. I have lived in the SW part of AR most of my life. My father currently lives in Texarkana. My name is Thomas (Tommy) Lowe, my father is Richard (Ricky) Lowe, the question comes into play about my grandfather: all I know is his name is Paul Lowe and lived in the Lewisville, AR area when my father was a child. I think he may have come from the Missouri area, but that is just something my father thought he remembered. My grandmother is dead so I cannot get any information from her. The only time I saw him was in 1977? and he was headed to Houston, TX. No one knows what happend after that. My grand mothers name was Wanda Lowe (Evans). Any Information would be helpful.

I am searching for any information on the surname Lowe in and around Carter Co., IT, with Chickasaw Nation ties (or not) in the period from about 1890-1905. It is said they owned a hardware/lumber store in Ardmore and possibly some railroad holdings. Any information even remotely close will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Melanie McCoy
buffalowindwoman@yahoo.com

I am descended fron the Lowes of East Huntingdon Twp.(EHT), Westmoreland Co., PA. One branch stayed in EHT and one branch went to Ohio. I was surprised to find out both branches still pronounce their name Lowe as in "now", not "low". I think the old German spelling of Lau would have been pronounced "now". Any other "NOW"s out there?

Can someone who has been researching Lowe families for awhile tell me some of the different ways the have found the Lowe name spelled? I know Low is one, but I can bet there are a few.
I'm looking for the family of Wm. E. Lowe that married Teresa "Tennie" Jones. William was born abt 1872-76. His wife Tennie abt 1887. Tennie is born Mo, but William keeps saying Ms. His son seems to think his father's name was Sam Lowe, but I think Sam may have been a middle name.
I"d appreciate it if someone on this list will email me the different spellings of Lowe to look for.
sudzi6648@yahoo.com

Another Lowe lost in Mississippi-Sam Lowe

I havent been working on these Lowe's very long, but I am already discouraged! I have a William E. Lowe born abt 1871( sometimes he tells fibs abt his age) but he always sticks with being born in Mississippi and also says his father's name is Sam Lowe, also born in Mississippi. He married Beddie Dublin, and this family ended up in Dunklin county Mo.
I seem to be stuck in that "no 1890 census area" that is soooo bad to be, and often times so very important. I also think he (William) may have had a sister named Bettye Harmon that lived in Michigan. His son refers to her in obit as aunt Bettye Harmon from Flint Michigan. I have no clue as to when or where she was born.
I am posting in hopes that someone may be looking for this same Sam Lowe as all of you are. By the way, Sam is white, and not black. I say that because the only Sam I can find in Mississippi in 1880 is a black guy. He also has a son named William.
Please email me at sudzi6648@yahoo.com if you know of Sam.

I have been reading archives of this board for hours now and the only references I ever found to John Lowe was back in 2001 so I am hoping that maybe SOMEONE can help me here because I have hit a brick wall and this is my maiden name family line so I really want to find out where it goes. Here's what I have so far.

John Lowe
b: in Maryland
d: (not verified but likely in Georgia)
Married Chloe Maddox in Hall County, GA on November 19, 1839
Chloe's birthday is unknown but I have NC as the location of her birth, and Georgia as the place of her death.

John and Chloe had 4 children from what I have learned...
Henry J Lowe born 1849-1854 in GA (this is my line)
Aaron born 1841
Lee born 1843
Taylor born 1845

To this point I have been completely unable to locate John's parents. I am not as concerned with finding Chloe's family as I am the Lowe family right now. Of course ALL information I can find or receive is TERRIFIC, but I'm trying to focus my energies on the Lowe family right now. Can anyone help me with this line? PLEASE... and thank you in advance! :)

LOW(E) BRICK WALL BROKEN with DNA testing!

FamilyTree DNA has a big SALE going from now through August 31. Male 37 marker YDNA test kit price is only $119, down from $180. The Low(e) Men's DNA site is located here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/LOWE/

Can we get some more Low(e) males tested out there???

Our Low line couldn't get any farther back than my great grandfather, Jonathan Low from Spartanburg, SC who migrated to Mississippi and died in 1910. We had IDEAS, but couldn't really trace our great grandfather, and had no idea if he had brothers or not.

From looking at the Census records, and from a grave that was inexplicable in my great grandfathers family burial plot in Mississippi, I began to search for other possible relatives. I went to the SC Archives, to Salt Lake City, etc. and founds lots of possibilities but no proof.

Early this year I found a descendant of a PROBABLE brother to my great grandfather. I also asked my Uncle to participate, in order to PROVE something. Sure enough, they are "closely related", matching in 34 of 37 markers for DNA, and the 3 that are "off" are only by one number. That is considered a "MATCH". Hooray!

But the BIG SURPRISE is that both of these men also matched in 34 out of 37 markers to 3 other males who had been tested ... one from the LOW(e) test and 2 from the COURTRIGHT test. It turns out that all three of these men go back to ONE person who immigrated to New Amsterdam with his sons in 1663. Descendants of one of the sons took a variance of his FIRST NAME as their SURNAME, LOW (pronounced like COW)!!

Suddenly all the myths in my LOW family that we were SCOTTISH were blown away and we had a viable ancestor from the 1600's ... ! I have still not found the exact MALE descendant who came South by the 1790 census in Spartanburg, but now I have a place to try to search from.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE DNA TESTING MADE in my family's search for ancestors. No matter what you may believe about the origins of your Low(e) family, if you cannot PROVE anything ... and especially if your group of people ended up in North or South Carolina ... I highly recommend male DNA testing!!

FamilyTree DNA SALE until end of August only!

Especially if you have a BRICK WALL, this is a good option. How many dollars have you spent in libraries, traveling, researching ... and how much time on the internet conversing about THEORIES when DNA can give ANSWERS that you need?!

My family of LOW(E) from Spartanburg, SC ... and later Mississippi ... was convinced we were Scottish or Scots-Irish. We couldn't go past my great grandfather, Jonathan Low (b. 1831 in Spartanburg and died 1910 in Sardis, Panola County, Mississippi). We had GUESSES, but nothing beyond this man. We could not imagine getting back to the 1600's in our research because no records seemed to exist.

I had two males tested, one was my uncle. The second was a descendant of someone I believed to be my great grandfather's brother. I hoped to prove relationship that way ... and I got reasonable confirmation of that conjecture, but also SO MUCH MORE! Our line of LOW traces back to ONE MAN who came to New Amsterdam in 1663, and whose father and grandfather are proven. Children of this guy, Lourens Jansen Von Kortrecht (or Kortright) took a variance of his FIRST NAME to become their LAST NAME ... LOUW, and it was quickly shortened to LOW, pronounced like COW ...

Somehow one of Lourens' male descendants ended up migrating to Spartanburg SC (by way of Caswell County, NC) for the 1790 census.

The DNA match we got (34 out of 37 markers), was to two different men who trace their ancestry back to the KORTRIGHT/KORTRECHT/COURTRIGHT line coming from Lourens' brothers, and one man whose name is LOWE that traces directly back to this man.

The Low(e) DNA coordinator CALLED ME ON THE PHONE after receiving a couple of very puzzled emails from me, and said, "YOU ARE DUTCH ... DNA DOESN'T LIE".

SO ... no matter what your "family legend" might be, if your name is LOW(E) and you THINK you are British, Scottish, etc. .... you may be in for a big surprise. Our family surely was.

NOW, if we could only find WHO of Lourens' descendants came SOUTH!!!!

Linking Simpson Lowe (son) to William Lowe (or Low) as father in Spartanburg County, SC

Does anyone have any documentation to link son Simpson Lowe (b.1814) to father William Lowe or Low (b. 1788)? They are from Spartanburg County, SC and show up in 1850 Census as living close by each other and then I believe in 1870 Census William (age 80) is living in the Alms house run by Simpson and wife Rebecca. If anyone has any information that might help my search I would greatly appreciate it.

Paul or Donald Lowe of Indianapolis Indiana

I am looking for connections to Paul or Donald Lowe born around 1927-1929 in Indianapolis, IN. They were brothers and sons of Paul and Bebe Lowe as stated in the 1930 census. I am not sure if the name Bebe is correct, if that is a nickname or possibly a first marriage of Paul Sr. Paul and Donald were first cousins to my Dad. Their fathers were brothers. Any info would be appreciated.

Lowe - Jenkins wedding announcement - Maryland

This announcement was clipped and pasted into a journal (mostly of national news) from the estate of my late grandmother who resided in Frederick, Maryland. Most of the articles were not labeled with dates, and some were not in order. Therefore, the date listed may not be accurate. I am not related to the families mentioned, but I thought this might be of interest to those who are.

Stacy

--------------

THE DAILY NEWS
FRIDAY, OCT. 3, 1884

Brilliant Marriage Bells.—Miss Mary G. Lowe, youngest daughter of ex-Gov. E. Louis Lowe, of Maryland, and a former resident of this city, was married to Mr. Frank D. S. Jenkins, of Baltimore, yesterday morning in St. Joseph’s Church, Brooklyn, N. Y. The Rev. Mr. Corcoran officiated, assisted by the Rev. Messrs. Taft, McGlinchy and Cooper. The nuptial mass was served by the two sons of Gen. John Newton, (Victor Newton and Thomas Newton,) and Joseph Kearny and Matthew Kearny, of Brooklyn. The Sun says: The bride wore a seal brown gros grain silk, with front of the basque, collar and cuffs of ottoman of the same shade, with plush half moons. The long back drapery of the basque, which was trimmed with chenille fringe, fell straight over the box-pleated skirt. The small capote-shaped bonnet was of seal brown velvet with tips of the same shade. The wrap was made of the plush with chenille fringe. The ornaments were diamonds. The maid of honor was Miss Victoria Lowe, a sister of the bride, who wore a gown of light green plush and silk with trimmings of Chantilly lace, and pearl ornaments. The best man was Mr. T. Meredith Jenkins, of Baltimore, a brother of the groom. There were no ushers. The reception after the wedding was at the house of the bride’s parents, Governor and Mrs. E. Louis Lowe, No. 439 Clermont avenue, Brooklyn. Only the immediate family and a few intimate friends were invited. The oldest and youngest daughters of ex-Gov. Lowe have now married the oldest and youngest sons of Mr. Austin Jenkins, the eminent lawyer of Baltimore, Md.

Lowe Cemetery North Carolina

Hi all, I am looking for any information regarding a Lowe Family Cemetery in Transylvania County, North Carolina. Apparently my great great grandfather, Wayne Lowe (b. 1855, d. 1892) is buried there. He was married to Harriet Cass Galloway and they had several children who are buried there as well (Cornelius d.1899, Viletus d. 1889, Lunar d. unknown, Marette d. 1889). Their youngest daughter, Carrie Lowe (b. 1891), was my great grandmother and married William Robinson. If anyone has any info on this cemetery, I would be very grateful. Thank you!

I was recently told by a family member that the Lowe family I'm looking for is in the 1870 census, living in Birmingham, Alabama. Lee Lowe is the name of the father. However, I have searched to no avail and can not find any Lowe's with any of the names I'm looking for in the 1870 census. Lee Lowe was born in North Carolina and he and his wife (who may have been Estell) are buried in unmarked graves near Warz (not sure of spelling here) Alabama. I'm stuck does this ring a bell with anyone?

I have found Jonas and Susan LOWE MYERS in the 1860 census for Franklin Twp, Newton Co, MO. Living with them and their first-born daughter, Mary, is Nancy LOWE. Nancy LOWE is 60 years old and was born in VA. I am hoping that Nancy is Susan's mother. If so, I'm looking for Unknown LOWE, who would be the husband of Nancy MNU.

Hello everyone - my GGG Grandmother Ann Lowe was born around 1816 in West Bromwich. Her parents were William Lowe and Anne.

She had a brother Samuel, born abt 1824 who married Jane abt 1847, their children are Phoebe Ann - who married William Stanway at All Saints Church, West Bromwich in 1864, Samuel, Edward and Eliza Jane.

Two other brothers are Joseph, born abt 1835 and William, born abt 1836.

Anne Lowe married William Bartlam/Barklam in 1834 at St Thomas, Dudley.

I would love to hear from anyone connected to this family, who although originated in West Bromwich, moved to Tipton by about 1836.

Best wishes - Maggie

Emigration to Australia from lincs of Ralph and Henry Lowe's descendents
HENRY LOWE bn. Roston,Derby 1820's farmed at Leake, Lincs. He was my gt.gt.uncle and an older brother RALPH LOWE ( 1812 - 1887) who farmed 1000 acres at Braunceswell Manor Sleaford my gt.gt.grandfather.
From Henry Herbert-Lowe, Sydney Australia 06 Jan.2002, the gt.grandson of HENRY LOWE I have inferred that some of Henry's children/grandchildren may have emigrated to Australia. Information on them and several of Ralph Lowe's sons who are not in the uk censuses for 1891 and 1901 would be much appreciated.
Regards, Joanna

James Lowe

I am seeking information on James LOWE and his family. The information I have is that this James was born 14 June 1793 in St. John, British America, and died in Australia. My info also states that James married Mary Newey at Aston Juxta, Birmingham,Warwick,England on 15 May, 1837. I believe he came to South Australia on the ship Googley or Googhley in 1839. They had six sons between 1840 and 1850.
I would be grateful for any information regarding the year, ship and Port re James & Mary's departure from England, their arrival in St John and the area of St John they resided in before leaving for Australia. I am also interested in what work James did in both England and St John.
I understand his father, also James, was in the 26th Regiment of the British Army.
