Re: Charles F. Lowndes in TN 1900-1910,

Charles Francis G Lowndes was my great grandfather. My records show he was born 4 Jul 1851 in Winston Salem, NC. He married Nancy Virgina Yarbrough in 1872. They had 8 children, the youngest being my grandfather, Charles George Lowndes. The family was residing in Humboldt Town, Gibson, TN in 1900 and Jackson Ward 3, Madison, TN in 1910.

Charles' father was Francis Birckett Lowndes born in London. Family legend has it that he came to American as a young man and married an American girl (name unknown). He was said to have owned a successful Buggy and Carriage shop in Winston Salem, but I can find no actual facts on this.

I would love to work with you on this if you are still interested.

hi I was interested in your Owen John Lowndes Witherington. My grandma's family is lowndes and they have all come from the general area of Birmingham,Staffordshire, Shropshire etc before a branch of them went to bradford for work,(my grandma's line) I guess. There are a few John Lowndes in my trees maybe You should try looking at the female lines of the lowndes family, sometimes you find that daughters would sometimes keep their family name and ends up as a hypernated surname and down the generations people forget where it comes from espcially if its the female line,a relative of mine did this her name and the name of her children ended up as harrison-wilson. In the meantime check out my trees moore/mann/lowndes and moore/lowndes. I would be interested to know what you find out

I spent two days in the Swarthmore Quaker Library in Springfield, Pennsylvania. I spent alot of that time looking at old hard to read microfilm of Quarter Meeting Minutes. Somewhere in one of those minutes the Lowndes were discussed. After coming to America, before or after buying land from William Penn they lived in a Cave. It was Jane with the children. I could find not any referenced to Hugh being with them here in America. I did find reference that Hugh was released from prison, but died from complications before they left England. Verify it - I have not been able to make it across the pond - but would LOVE to spend some time in libraries in England doing research - have several families. But that is not possible now, nor in the near future - so I can only go with what I do have.
I found your information very possibly true, if Hugh did spend time in prison, and the family disagreed with their life style then they very well could have disowned him. It would be understandable in a day and age when your political and religious standing had much to do with your advancement in life.

Your information is very impressive!

It would serve well that there may have been information confused/due to disinheritance - my information says that Hugh (who married Jane Stretch) may have died in prison - thus the distancing of the family from him?

I will look your informaiton over more (printing it right now) and get back to you.

Thank you,

Penny

I found the subject book by Carl J. Vipperman (published 1978 by the University of South Carolina) at a local bookstore for the astronomical cost of $1.08 (including sales tax). I picked it up just in case the subject might be in my family tree. He wasn’t so I am willing to provide the book to anyone on this board interested for cost + shipping (book has 276 potages including index).
Yes, it is good to meet up with another Lownes researcher. I visited Swarthmore College Quaker Library several years ago, and got alot of information, including information about Hugh and Jane Stretch Lownes. I was able to connect them to England. Information I found said that Hugh was imprisoned because of his faith(? - unsure), and may have died in England. Jane definately came with her sons, and once buying land from William Penn (I found information from an old newspaper article showing the documentation) lived in a cave in the now Springfield, Pennsylvania area for a while. Supposedly a movie was made as an educational tool, showing Jane's story. I think I remember seeing a movie (in 4th-6th grade American History class?) that looking back, I wonder if it was this film. I have been wondering if anyone knows of this film - and if it still exists?

I also hope to clear up alot of the questions I have about the Lownes (Ohio line spelling). There are so many William, Joseph, and James Lownes - I find it hard to keep them straight - especially looking at the Quaker Meeting Minutes.

Thank you for the first line of Lownes. I will compare this and respond later with other questions, if that is ok.

Thanks again!

Joseph (1/3/1693-9/12/1762) m.
Hi Jane
I have only just started using messageboards and I am unsure how to echange info. I have just tried to send you a copy of the 1881 census but ancetry.com did not like the file type and I lost the reply I have just spent 10 minutes typing.

If you send me your address I will email it direct to you.I may also still have an electronic copy of my 1901 census returns.

I have confirmed the census information/ relationships by ordering birth/marriage certificates (I hope to scan these soon). I will (hopefully) attach a copy of my family tree.

I am based in Warrington/Manchester. Are you in the UK?
Do you have a contact for Cathy Nagle/are you/she/we related?
my email address is colin@orchardbrow.fsworld.co.uk
Have a good Weekend
Colin Lowndes

My daughter is 7 this week so I may be a few days before I reply again.
PS
If you change the file attachment to .doc it may work.

Hi Ashleigh,
Cousin Pat here. Saw your message about the Las Vegas Lowndeses. About Thomas Lowndes in Queens....He was born in Ireland around 1844, I think in Oldcastle in County Meath. He emigrated with his parents, John and Mary Murphy Lowndes, and his brother, Richard (born about 1840). They lived in Manhattan on the east side. John Lowndes died about 1864 of "dropsy." He was 60. Mary Murphy Lowndes lived until 1887. Thomas Lowndes married twice. His first wife was Eliza Burns, born Ireland. They were married in 1874 by Rev. George Hepworth, but I don't know in what church. They had three children--Thomas, Robert, Mary. Eliza died in 1887 in her late 30s. Thomas later married again, probably around 1892 or so, to Mary G. Renn. They had eight children--John, Anna (my grandmother), Vincent, Francis, Joseph, Matthias, Leo (your great-grandfather), and Catherine (who was born prematurely and died on the day of her birth in 1909). Mary Renn Lowndes died a few weeks after Catherine. Thomas Lowndes died in 1912 of cancer of the mouth and jaw. He was living in Queens at the time--the family had also lived in Manhattan and the Bronx. He and his brother owned a business, "Lowndes Brothers Coal Company."

I haven't been able to get more info on my line. My ancestor Mary Ann Lounds/Lounds was b. Mobberley ca 1824. She was apparently illegitimate. I have not found a christening record for her in any church in that area. I found her marriage record (to Joseph Ford) in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. The family were in Halifax, Yks. by 1851 and two of their children ended up in Salford, Lancs. as young adults. She is one of my brick walls!

These Rodway children were the sons of Charles Rodway and Mary Edwards. I am curious if they may have been related, in some way, to the Lowndes. Any connections?
