I am a descendant of Peter Loy who lived in Minnesota appearing on the Territorial Registers from 1846. Portions of the family still reside in Minnesota. I am 5th generation from Peter on my father's side of the family. Do not know if I can be of help, but willing to try.

Buck,

That sounds interesting! Let me know when you get these scanned. In the past, I've been in contact with some of William E.'s descendants. I know for a fact the family inherited William E.'s genealogy work, so it's likely John A.'s letters might still exist.

Did you know that excerpts of John A.'s letters are quoted in Genevieve Peters' book (from 1950s) "Know Your Relatives"?

Delores

I have came in possesion of about a dozen letters written between 1900-03 by William E Loy written to my great grandfather John A Loy b.1864. They were regarding researching our family history and quite interesting. I will be attempting to scan these and make available to all. It would be awesome if relatatives of William E still had the letters that John A had written back.
Buck Loy

Jane, this is Bessie Lorene (Loy) Klein (24 April 1897-January 1982), daughter of Stanley Beecher Loy and Armentia (Morley) Loy. "Beecher" was son of Jacob and Mary (Reasoner) Loy. Jacob was son of Jacob and Phoebe (Tillman) Loy. Jacob son of George and Catherine (Tillman) Loy. George was son of Martin and Catherine (Foust) Loy. My ancestor was brother to George.

In the past I've corresponded with several of Bessie's closer family members. I'd like to have the photo to add to my LoyHistory.com website, so they and everyone else can see it.

Thanks!

Delores Rochelle Walls

Mildred Loy - Knoxville TN

I am seeking information on a Mildred Loy or her children, b abt 1927 in Knoxville TN to Otey/Oaty Loy and Pearl Wittenbarger. Mildred had about 5 children. One was named Linda born abt 1944; the following were born to Mildred and her long time lover Floyd Rogers: Ellen Jane (adopted and name changed to Myra), twin brothers Jackie and Jimmy born abt 1949 and Wanda born abt 1952.

Sometime about 1954, Mildred left Knoxville TN without her children. Social services collected the children and I assume put them up for adoption. Mildred returned to Knoxville for a few visits (that I know of) but not sure where she went or what became of her.

Anyone with any information on Mildred or these children, please contact me. If you happen to see this and your the children, your birth cousin and half sister want to find you.

That could be her. On her marriage her name spell Loy.

I have found her daughter Ida Jane Daniels death certificate. It say's her mother name is Sarah Mayham. So, Sarah's middle name could be Mayham. And also had her father name Joseph Walters.

Ida was born in Fayette, Howard, Missouri and died in Pleasant Hill, Pike, Illinois.
There was a James Loy married to Eunice Bailey or Bagley in Glasgow in the 1830's and 1840's. They had a daughter Mary who was born around 1836 in Franklin Cy, Ohio. She is in Glasgow in 1850 and gone in 1860 (married, died or moved. I have not yet been able to tracce her). Her father and mother moved to Chariton (near the settlement of Chariton across the county line from Glasgow) by 1870 and her father was dead by 1880. Her mother had followed a nephew to California. I do not know if there is any connection but since your relative was Sarah M Loy I thought I would check.

Best Regards

Perhaps you could check with the Bremerton library for 1948-1949 city directories/phone books, to see which Loy families were living there.

Searching for information about Anton Loy prior to his arrival at Castle Gardens, NY in 1890. He was supposedly born in November 1863 in Jacobani, Austria which was Romania at the time of his birth. He departed for the US from Hamburg, Germany on the ship Rhaetia. A "note" was located at a family member's home that stated his father was named John (probably Johann).

Would appreciate any information or leads anyone may have.

Yes, I'm the one in CA with the Loy site, but I'm Delores with an "e." :-P Ever since these boards stopped showing the poster's name, it's been somewhat inconvenient not being able to see who's who: just a username.

No, I've not tried the Historical Society. You might also try to see if Peter left a will. I don't recall seeing his name in the index list I'd seen of Loy wills, but might have missed it. Since he didn't serve Union in the Civil War, he wouldn't be in pension records. The pension records would have given a death date.

I had a feeling that it might be the date was confused or inscribed incorrectly. NC did not start keeping death records and certificates as a rule until 1911 or so....
I did try to reach the church by email thinking they might have records of burials but didn't get a response. I may try calling them. Have you ever had contact with the Guilford Historical Society, I was just wondering what type of help they might be in find locations.

Are you Dolores of Ca who did the History of Martin Loy web page? If so we made contact a few years back...I am the line of Peter through John Rankin Loy and Annie Etta Carter.
As much extensive info as I have on our NC Loys, Peter's dates have remained elusive to me, too.

Yes, Peter definitely was in the 1880 census. Sarah was widow by 1900 census. Without the 1890, it's hard to narrow that down further via census.

Living on the other side of the country, I don't have access to Guilford Co. newspapers to search death notices. However, I believe that would be your best bet to find record of death. I'm not sure how consistent Guilford County death records were in that era, if any existed at all. You could check the month of August for obvious years 1880 to 1900. My hunch is he probably died around 1886-1888, which would more closely match age 50.

You must recall that in those days, tombstones weren't always erected at time of death. Many people couldn't afford markers for loved ones until much later. When tombstones finally *were* erected, dates could get muddled over time. A prime example of this is my grandma's father and her step-mother. Their death months were switched on tombstone. (They died 3 years apart.) I didn't discover this until I obtained copies of their death certificates. That explained why I'd been unable to find their obituaries, too.

Hope this helps some.

DRW

LoyHistory.com

(Peter's grandfather Henry Loy was nephew to my ancestor Henry Loy. My Henry was son of Martin and Catherine Loy.)

My Peter Loy was born on12 Feb 1812 in Sandy Ridge, Hampshire, Va and died on 18 Mar 1867 in Slanesville, Hampshire, VW. He was the son of Adam Loy (1786 - 1860) and Sarah Hiett (1790 - 1850).
Tombstone and Census Question.

I am finding a great many dates for the death of my great-grandfather, Peter Loy, one notation shows death 13 Aug 1876, and the tombstone in Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery show date of death 14 August 1976. However he is accounted in the 1880 census, with his wife and family, unless the census was done years earlier this date can`t be correct. Susan Smith Loy his wife, death certificate list her as being buried at the Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery but I did not find the marker, but next to Peter's grave there is a rock marker. On the row slightly to the left of Peter's tombstone rest that of his brother-in-law, John A. Smith.
I am wondering what is going on. I read some where that the tombstones don't always reflect a good death date, is that because maybe the population in general was illiterate and perhaps the dates don't always match up. One other thing is that the tombstones says he was 50 years which make his birth year 1826 but on all other records it shows abt 1833. Any help understanding this would be appreciate.

Barbara Bock seems to be an elusive person. Allegedly she was born/lived in Washington County, Maryland, and married Jacob Loy perhaps around 1794. What original source is there that can be documented that her maiden name was Bock? In Washington County Wills there is a Morets Deal, with a will dated 25 May 1794, and in his will he names his one son, 3 unmarried daughters, and 2 married daughter, one of them named BARBARA LOYE. Can anyone identify this woman and which Loye she married? Or perhaps she is the wife of Jacob Loy???

Johannes Ley first wrote his name as Johannes Lay or Ley in GErman when he disembarked from the the Loyal Judith November 25th 1740 and just thereafter took the oath of allegiance. The next time his name appears is in the Baptismal records of Muddy Creek Reformed Church in Lancaster Maryland as Johannes Ley in 1751. The next year in the initial tax list of Berks County he is listed as being in Brecknock Township (Eastern Part of Muddy Creek Congregation ended up in Berks when it was split off in 1752)and was recorded as "John Loy". This is the first time I have found him named Loy (Though other Pennsylvania Loys may have used the spelling earlier - I am not sure) Thereafter in church documents, primarily christenings he always was described as Johannes or Hanes Ley. In civil documents (all in English) including land deeds in Pa and Va and his will he always went by "Loy." I am not aware I have ever seen Daniel Loy or his siblings use the "Ley" spelling.

My guess is (a) he saw another "Ley" spell his name "Loy" in English and followed suit or (b) an English speaker spelled his name that way in an official record such as the tax list and John just took that as his new world name.

This is another indication John Loy and Hans Yurigh Ley/Loy were probably not brothers. Hans Yurigh Ley was very well educated in German and penned his own will in that language. John came to America young, does not appear to have been as well schooled as Hans Yurigh and it is hard to tell how well he learned either German or English writing. Though it is likely he could read (the Germans of that time and place generally could - religious reasons) it is not certain he was very confident of his own writing and he tended to sign documents with an X leaving it to others to do his spelling. I say he could probably read because his English name was consistently spelled the same which he must have indicated (unless it was Maria Elizabetha who could read. I am not sure to what extent young German women immigrants were taught to read and write in that era).
