Rev. Andrew Luce

Died, in LaGro, Wabash County,
Luce, about 75 years of age.
Bro. Luce has lived in LaGro
some eleven years, supplying at
first the churches of LaGro and
Liberty; later our church at Roan.
For three or more years past he has
been an honorably-retired minister,
preaching occasionally in the LaGro
church and assisting in the Sunday-
school. Recently they secured the
services of Rev. C.A. Kanouse as
S. S. for half his time. Yesterday
(Sunday) was a magnificent October
Sabbath, and Father Luce, in more
than usual good spirits, attended
both the morning and the evening
services. At the evening service
he united in the opening hymn,
and as the minister said, "Let us
pray," he arose, brought his hand to his
head and at once fell back. Promptly
caught by two or three brethren, he was
carried out of church into an adjoining
residence, and in a few moments he was dead-
apoplexy. Unconscious, suffering no pain- he
fell asleep, in a manner, at the place, and on the
the day that he would have no doubt have
chosen, had his preferences been consulted. A
fitting ending of a
a long life consecrated to the service of a
Redeemer for whom he has, through a long life,
faithfully worked. He leaves a helpless
wife and one daughter at LaGro, a married daughter
in Kansas, a son in California, several grand-children
here abouts, and a sister in Grant County. He was very much respected by the citizens of LaGro and vicinity.
Funeral Wednesday at 1 p.m.

from a newspaper clipping pasted into a very old bible that my daughter found on her job at the Salvation Army Store in Lytton Springs, Sonoma County, CA.

On the same page it is handwritten:

Andrew Luce
presented by Chandler Bartlet
1841.

(I can not give you anymore information than this. The name of the paper, and date are not available to me.)

Have a good one! Peggy
Luce family in Maine/Massachusetts

My great grandfather was William James Luce b. 1864 in Massachusetts. Moved to northern Maine at some point, and married my g-grandmother Maud[e] Sarah Clark b.6/23/1887 d. 4/12/1965.
According to an old family Bible, William James's father's name was William L. Luce b.10/10/1840 d.12/4/1901, but nothing is known of his mother, whether there were siblings, nor anything else regarding his father or ancestry. His birthplace hints that his ancestry lies within the vast Luce family of Massachusetts, but I have not been able to get anywhere with this line. Does anyone know more about either William?

After a ten year search, the descendants of Jane Catherine Luce of Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan:

Jane Catherine Luce, b. Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA, c1826, daughter of Bartlett Luce and Sarah Janes. Other children of Bartlett Luce and Sarah Janes: Benjamin F. Luce, Theodore Luce, Charles Henry Luce, Sarah Luce w/o Daniel Harrington, and Charlotte Luce w/o Lorenzo Mason.

Bartlett Luce emigrated to Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan, c1832, where he was a prosperous landowner and lumberman. His sons and sons-in-law Harrington and Mason were "movers and shakers" in the new city of Port Huron and the State of Michigan.

Daughter Jane Catherine Luce married 13 April 1853 Thomas Scott Donahue, b. c1824 Rockbridge Co., Virginia, in Grace Episcopal Church, Port Huron, Michigan. Thomas was the son of John Donihoo and Martha Moore Walker of Rockbridge County, Virginia, later China Township, St. Clair County, Michigan. John and Martha were Virginia landowners who became abolitionists. An Underground Railroad Memorial Plaque marks their gravesite in Hillside Cemetery, St. Clair, Michigan.

One daughter was born to Jane and Thomas, Mary Elizabeth Donahue, born 13 Jan. (probably)1854, Port Huron, Michigan. Thomas was in business at this time, later became a speculator in land and timber. Jane died 5 Sept. 1855 and is buried in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron, Michigan. Thomas Scott Donahue died 3 Jan. 1896 Chicago and is buried in Oakwoods Cemetery, Chicago.

Mary Elizabeth Donahue married (1) Edmund C. Jennings 17 July 1873 Chicago. Edmund was born 1849 in Rhinebeck, NY the son of John Jennings, a merchant, and Ellen. Edmund was a merchant in Detroit until c. 1889 when the family re-located in Chicago, and Edmund was an artist. It is not known where Edmund died or where he is buried. He was last located in St. Louis, MO, in the 1910 census.

Six children were born to Mary Elizabeth and Edmund Jennings: Unknown child, deceased; Florence W., died in childhood; Edmund b. 26 March 1883 Detroit, deceased before 1900; Don C. Thomas Jennings, b. 27 March 1884, Detroit; Florence J., b. 7 Oct. 1885 Detroit; and Kinsley Clark Jennings b. 28 Aug. 1889 or 90, Chicago.

Mary Elizabeth and Edmund Jennings' marriage ended in divorce about 1891; she re-married (2) John Augustine Smith Tuttle 27 April 1897 Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY. He was the son of John A. S. Tuttle Sr. and Adelia Genung and was born 10 Oct. 1854, Auburn, New York. He died 29 Dec. 1905, Manhattan, NY.

After her second marriage, Mary Elizabeth re-located to New York, first to Brooklyn, then to Manhattan. Mary Elizabeth Donahue Jennings Tuttle died in Manhattan 21 April 1913 and is buried in Kensico Cemetery, Westchester County, New York.

Don C. Thomas Jennings died 3 March 1956, New York, NY; Florence, w/o Frank Bischoff died 3 Sept. 1966 New York, NY; Kinsley Clark Jennings died Oct. 1974 probably in Queens, NY.
Luce surname DNA study

Want to prove you descend from Henry Luce? Does your paper trail run cold for your Luce family? Wonder if your Canadian Luce ancestor is related to Henry Luce of Martha's Vineyard? We need you for the Luce DNA study. See
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/luce/lusesurnamednaproje...
for details.
Henry's sons Robert, Eleazer, and Experience have descendants whom have taken the test. We hope to have other lines represented (Henry had nine sons). If you descend from any Luce or Luse you are welcome to join. This test measures DNA from the y-chromosome (so males only- if you are a female maybe you can get your brother or father to help) and therefore anyone with the Luce surname.

So light blue that they were almost white.

I wish I would have had the foresight to talk to him about his ancestors before he passed away, but it wasn't until he did that I realized the importance!

Thank you for any help you might can give me.

Take care, and God bless

Thomas Manning Luce Born 1792 in CT

Help!
This has been a mystery in my family for the longest time. Thomas Manning Luce is my ggg grandfather and I really need information on his parentage. I keep running into dead ends!
He enlisted in the army in 1813 and is considered a veteran of the war of 1812. I found his pension records in the National Archives and they say that he married his first wife Parmelia Vima? in New York and that she died in MI in 1844. I don't know if they had any children. He married Laura A Case in PA in 1848 and they had 7 children 5 of which lived. They were Martha Luce whose married name is Austin, born in 1851, Lyman S Luce (my gg grandfather) born 1853, Sharllotte Sarah Luce (who went by Sarah and whose married name is Chapman) born 1860, Flora M Luce born 1863 and Anna M Luce born 1869. Sometime during their marriage I think about 1850 they moved to Pierpont in Ashtabula OH where he and Laura live until he died in 1877. So I know a lot about him but not his parents or which Luce clan he is related to. Please email me if you have any info.
My gg grandfather was Prince E. Luce (b. 1858) son of Miles Luce (b. 1823) and Martha E., all of Maine. I think Miles was a son of Thaddeus Luce (b.1782) and Lovinia Pease, but I'm not sure. The LDS family file is confusing - it lists Thaddeus and Lovinia with 10 children 2 of which were born 2 months apart(!). Thaddeus' parentage is also uncertain - is it Seth (b. 1752) and Sarah?
Is there a good (and free) online resource for this family?

Thanks,
Annette

unknown Luce, possibly in Williamson Co Texas

I have 2 or 3 pictures, one has "Alvie Luce" on the back, "Mr. Luce" and one of a child that the first name is not readable, with the last name Luce. The pictures are from around the 1910-30 era. After doing a search with the name Alvie Luce, it came up with a man by that name buried in Andice Cemetery (born 8-7-1904 died 2-10-1990) in Williamson Co Texas, a dau of Alvie, Doris L Comeaux b: 10-7-1928 d:2-16-2002 also in Andice Cemetery.
These pictures were in an old paper album and there are quite a few that have no names whatsoever, but they could possibly be related.
If any of these names sound familiar, please feel free to let me know. I would like to find out if they are part of my extended family, as I have not run across this surname at all.
Thank you,
Kimberly Proctor-Fairchild

James & William A. Luce Photos/connection to Clark/Myers Family

I have two photos taken approx. 1860 to 1880. One is William A. (Bill) Luce and other Jim (James) Luce. They are obviously brothers and are very near in age. Photo's are from the family bible of Joseph S. and Ruth S. Clark Myers. Joseph Myers born in Virginia, Ruth in Ohio. They lived in Menard Co., Illinois in 1850 and 1860, and by 1870 were in Barton Co., Mo. All the tin types and photo's in the Bible are from approx. the same time period and are family members. The only ones not with established family connection are the Luce bro., Joe Prim, Russel & Cindy Evans. I'm surmising these individuals are family possibly related though a Clark or Myers female marrying a Luce. Most of the photo's were taken in Springfield, Ill. however, Luce photo's do not have a photgrapher on the back. Ruth Clark Myers was the sister of William C. Clark of Morgan Co., Ill. He was born in Ohio also and lists his father as William Clark. I have been unable to track the Myers family as yet, although there are other Myers in Menard Co., Ill. when they were there. Would like to share photo's & information.

Luces from Vermont

I have traced my Luce line back directly to Andrew Luce (died in Wheeling, IL, b. in Vermont) and back from there in "the Luce book". I have questions regarding his children (Benjamin is my line, b. 1815 in Vermont), but I have questions about daughters Mary & Hannah. Plus, family stories state that there is American Indian blood in the Luce line from about this time (1800's) and I even have photographs of Indian ancestors in the Luce line. Any help would be appreciated!

LUCE/LUSE Surname DNA Project

Project Background:
This project is for all males with surname LUCE, LUSE, or other variations. Most persons of this surname, tracing back to the 17th century in America, find they are descended from HENRY LUCE and wife REMEMBER LITCHFIELD of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.

The first record we have of HENRY is on November 13, 1666, when he was a juror in Scituate, where he may have resided, and in 1668 he was admitted as a proprietor of purchased lands in Rehoboth. The similarity of the name to LEWIS, together with the varieties of spelling both names in early records, renders identification difficult. LEWIS was written LUIS, LUICE, LEWES; and LUCE appears as LEWS, LEWSE, LUICE and LUSE. When he came to the Vineyard, or through what connection, is not known, but he had acquired before Feb. 1, 1671, a home lot on the west side of Old Mill river about forty rods north of Scotchman's Bridge road.

Project Goals:
Many LUCE family researchers have collectively conducted thousands of hours of genealogical research in America and abroad, in an effort to find proof of HENRY LUCE'S origins. Several theories exist, but none have apparently been proven. This project will hopefully allow participants to compare their Y-DNA with HENRY’S, and to discover further clues leading to HENRY’S ancestry.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/luce/lusesurnamednaproje...

Luce Surname

Apparently all Luces in the United States and Canada are descended from Henry Luce who was born in about 1640 and lived in Scituate, Massachusetts by 1666.
The best source for Luce (or Luse or Loose) genealogy is the huge, 4-volume work by Martha F. McCourt THE AMERICAN DESCENDANTS OF HENRY LUCE OF MARTHA'S
VINEYARD published in 1995 by the New England Historic Genealogical Society. There is a copy of this work at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City,
Utah. It can not be microfilmed because of copyright restrictions. However, a 1985 edition is available on microfilm on loan to any branch of the Family History
Library. Martha McCourt has attempted to trace all the descendants of Henry Luce. There is an excellent every-name index. There is a copy of her 1995 edition
in each of the 50 states, usually in the main historical or genealogical library for each state. I hope that helps all you Luces.

Harry L Luce of Lake Co Indiana killed in South Pacific WWII

Harry L. Luce of Lake County Indiana was killed March 27, 1945, while serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

We are seeking information regarding his military and civilian life and especially locate any family members still living so we can send them the free photograhs of his grave site and the beautiful memorial in the Philippines.

I am a retired Hoosier from Madison County residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. We are seeking family and military information about servicemen from your county killed in the South Pacific during World War II. There are 17,206 Americans buried here and thousands more that are missing or buried at sea and are honored on the “Tablets of the Missing”. Please visit our website to see the beautiful memorial located in Manila, Philippines.

http://fizkid.tripod.com/

My wife and I visited the cemetery as visitors and left with a mission in our heart. We have been taking photographs of the graves of the Indiana servicemen buried here and have been uniting them (at no charge) with their family members in Indiana and across the United States. To receive the photo of your family member, neighbor or friend all you need is a working email address. We do not send them to regular mailing addresses due to the costs. Please help us find the families of the men that might still be living. Our project is only successful because of teamwork and your contributions are noted on our website. If you wish to help us we will be pleased to add your name to our ACKNOWLEDGMENT page on the website. The obituaries usually did not appear till to three months after the death date.

If you are not a genealogist you can help by just picking up the telephone directory and find someone with the same last name and give them a call. It has worked many times for us.

Zenas5@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Dave and Apple Dwiggins
San Pablo City, Philippines

LUCE REUNION SEPT 26, 2004

Location: LUCE CEMETERY, on TX Hiway 7, (from Crockett) through Ratcliff, the cemetery is on right, about 7 miles east of Crockett (four miles before bridge on Neches River). A memorial marker is there; a gate at road into forest. Crockett Luce will have two cardboard signs there. Drive in throught gate, about 3/4 miles to cemetery. Covered Dish luncheon. Or just come and eat - there's always food. Come early and stay late to get acquainted. Someone is there early. Hope many of our Luce desc. from Houston/Cherokee/Anderson/Trinity and elsewhere will be there! See you at the Runion!
I have recently met a young man, born 1974, who is looking for his American father who he thinks is named Dan Luce. He is named Don, and was so named by his father. The father worked in Kontun,Gialai, Vietnam for ITT Services/Federal Electric Corporation. This is where Don was born. His father would be about 60 now, his mother is 72. They live in Houston. Don would love to see his father. do any of you know who the father may be?

Stephen Cook of Arlington(?), Texas

I had seen a posting in 2001 from a Stephen Cook about the Luce family reunion in Houston County, Texas. I recently attempted to contact him, but his email address was no longer valid. I believe his home is in Arlington, Texas, but cannot locate him by internet searches.

He and I share a common great-grandfather, Stephen Holston Shirey, and I have a lot of information to give to him. He was named after Stephen Shirey, and his father was very close to him. Descendants of Stephen Shirey are planning a memorial service for him, and I would like to notify Stephen Cook.

If you happen to know him from past Luce reunions and have a current email address for him, I would appreciate it if you would forward this email on to him. Or if not, do you have a home address for him, at least the city where he lives, if not Arlington. Or otherwise know how I could contact him.

I will deeply appreciate receiving your response.
