Death of Julia Lucus - 1894

Taken from the Cherokee Advocate, Oklahoma, 7 March 1894

JULIA LUCUS BURNED TO DEATH

Julia Lucus, a young girl, left Ft. Gibson last Monday in company with a negro man by the name of John Smith, their destination being Tahlequah. Night having overtaken them near Menard, they camped for the night. Near daylight, Smith states, he was awakened by the screams of the girl saying: "She was on fire!" As soon as possible he extinguished the flames, which had the unfortunate girl enveloped. He did all he could for her, (as he states), and started for this city. She died about four miles from this place.

There is a mystery connected with the death of the girl, and we trust our authorities will investigate and find out whether death was accidental or otherwise. City Marshal David Trainor arrested Smith on his arrival in the city. Smith has a good reputation, while he has been living in Tahlequah - but when a person is born with a brutal instinct, it will now and then crop out.

To whom it may concern: I am a cousin of Garland Lucus, Lubbock, Texas who is interested in his Lucus ancestry. His father was Jason (Jack) Lucus, brother of Ace (Adrian) Lucus. I have dug up quite a bit of background information on the Lucus family, but, of course, am no professional.
Garland Lucus' grandfather was J. J. Lucus, whose death certificate states he died Jan. 10, 1924 and is buried in Duffau, Texas. The death certificate information was verified by Jack Lucus, Dauffa, Texas (his son) and states that the deceased was born Jan. 26, 1849 in Mississippi.
Hope this will help.
If you need more information, just email be at:
Bobdeb5630@sbcglobal.net as I seldom look at the genealogy boards.
Bob Myers
Tyler, Texas

I have some info on Andrew from my cousin Rhonda in Alabama. I still want more. She has a herd time getting info also. Look fellow researchers, I know some of the Lucus' were trouble makers, but any pressing you can do on the older generations of your family for info will greatly benefit you. The know more than you think or more than they care to. Just pose the questions right and they will tell you. Happy researching!

LUCUS/MC CAUGHLEY CONNECTION?? I have heard this
interesting story for years. My aunt Letha Stoddard and my
Dad David F. Lucus got a letter from Ace Lucus who said that
5 brothers named McCauley, MC Caughley, came from the British Isles and changed their name from MC Cauley, MC Caughley to LUCUS for reasons I only know the gossip about.
APPARENTLY, the gentleman who got off the boat before them was named LUCAS, so they decided to use LUCUS, a more unique spelling, so that way if they got separated, the family spelling their name LUCUS would most likely be related and the LUCUS's could find each other. By the way,
if you e-mail me, please send it to ouibelieve@yahoo.com or
majorebiz@ hotmail.com. I may not have the aol address by the time you read this letter. I am related to dad David F. Lucus, his dad, (my grandfather d. 1932 John William Lucus,
Uncle, James Bell Lucus (died) Ace Lucus is a relative and so is Charley Lucus. Quite a character I hear. That is another story I remember from the time I was a small child.
My name is Lavelle Lucus <ouibelieve@yahoo.com> majorebiz@hotmail.com. My brothers are David Scott Lucus,
and Randall Edward Lucus. We have cousins named
Jim Lucus and Robby Lucus. (909)335-8742 Keep me posted!
I noticed you mentioned Charley Lucus, Ace Lucus, James
Lucus. My Father's name is David F. Lucus, son of John W
Lucus and Fate Lucus. I have a letter from Ace Lucus (an old one) which suggests that we may have relatives named
McCauley or Mc Caughley, or something like that. My grandfather died in Elida New Mexico around 1932 when my dad was only 7. Dad was born in Elida New Mexico in Dec
1925. I recall my Grandma Fate, my dad and my Aunt Letha
talking fondly about Charley, but I will have to talk to my dad because, it has been so long, since my Uncle J.B.Lucus,
Wesley Evans, Uncle Ed Evans (Texas) and my Aunt Letha Stoddard to whom the letter from Ace Lucus wrote that letter.
I will also find the letter which has long since been filed away and I will get back to you with the details. This is fun!

The church in question is actually a Baptist church in the town of Lingleville, Texas. A history of Lingleville states that in 1891 the Missionary Baptist Church changed its name to "Lingleville Baptist Church of Christ". Basil M. Lucas is the son of Basil Eli Lucas, who was a Baptist minister in Hill and Fayette counties prior to 1884 when Basil E. Lucas died. Evidently Basil. M. Lucas followed in his father's footsteps and became a Baptist minister. -- bobhadley@msn.com
I just read your rather old message. You probably have the info you requested by now. If not, Charley (C.Y.) Lucus's father was James J. Lucus,b. 1848 in Iuca, Miss., d. 1924. Buried in Duffau, Texas. Charley's mother died when he was about 3 years old. (Incidentally, he smoked a pipe from age 3 until his death in 1962!!) His dad, Jams J. was single for many years. When he was 56 years old, he married a 26 year old woman. They had 3 sons. A few months ago, I found one of them on the Internet. I knew him when I was a boy. His namd is Ace Lucus, and lives at Mc Camey Texas (age 92). He has Alsheimer's. I had a nice telephone visit with his wife. She says he doesn't remember anything about our family.
I am Dennis Lucus, Sr., and am Delayne's dad. I've preached for your dad several times, and he has helped me with 2 revivals when I pastored in Pennsylvania. I hope you are doing fine.
Sincerely, Dennis Lucus, Sr.

He was my great-great grandfather. I have been searching for information about his parents and have found internet information that leads me to believe that Rev. Lucas was his father.
