Thank you for the information! It's great to learn about family history. Karen can certainly reach out to me if she would like 732 403 4472. I currently live in Neptune, NJ with my wife Erin, our son William August Ludwig V and our new daughter Elise August. I knew very little about my grandfather and would enjoy learning more about him. Muriel was very special to us.

I'm positive that you are my cousins son. I may have seen you at your grandfather's wake in Keyport, again at my Aunt Muriel's funeral. I visited at your father's wake, but don't recall seeing you there.
I don't have much to report on your great or great greatgrandfather's history. The best that I can tell you is that my grandmother, Margaret, died in 1959 living at 63-72-84th place, Rego Park, Queens, New York.
My Grandfather, William August 1st died in 1961 while I was stationmed in the Far East. I believe that he was born here in Brooklyn or Queens in either 1886 or 1889. From what my father, Harry, tells me, his grandfather, also named William, jumped ship in New York harbor in the late 1800's and established a bakery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He's the one that married into the List family.
My father, Harry Ludwig, your grandfather's brother, just turned 96, and living in Lehigh Acres, Florida.
My daughter, Karen, apparently is also looking for relatives of William August Ludwig. Good luck in your search.

Hello, there may be a connection here. The Robert Ludwig in my family was born June 3, 1873 in Alsace, France. I believe his father may be Adolf Ludwig (I have a couple of pictures of Robert's parents).
Census records show that he emigrated to the United States in 1900 at the age of 27. The scant information I have found shows that he may have had a sister who may be the Wilhelmina Louisa Ludwig born 1872 that you referenced. Do you have any information on Wilhelmina's parents or do you know if she married in the U.S.?

Thank you!
- Randy

I was finally able to find my ancestor Edith in the 1900 census under a nickname of Ida. Because of the way that German speaking immigrants pronounced Ludwig to English speaking census takers, there are many possible spellings you might want to examine. Ladewig, Ludvig and Lodevic are three of them. Also, see if there is a German nickname for Dorothy or try using a middle name as a first name for each possible surname. Good Luck!

Wow! Thank you Andrea - I'd never thought to look for that spelling.

I have no idea how she got to Nebraska, but anything is possible. Now I'm wondering if it could have been with an older sibling, as her parents obviously stayed in IL.

Would not surprise me if she were a mail order bride either, as you never know what you will find when doing research! LOL!

I'm very interested in this line, as we didn't even know that we were a part of this line until a few years ago. We'd always been told that my paternal great-grandmother had a "boyfriend" with the last name Hirsch, but that was it. Well, no, he was her husband, the father of her only son (my grandfather). Hirsch's mother was Dorothy/Dorothea.

Thank you so very much for your most kind response!

Patti

Not related just trying to help.

I believe this is the family you are looking for:

1870 census IL Cook Niles (name misspelled?)
Ladewig, Joachim 50 Mecklenberg Sch (Prussia)
Caroline 43 ditto
Maria 11 IL
Christine 9 IL
Joachim 7
Caroline 5
Dorathea 3
Ladwig (Ludwig?) 2

The 1860 census has Joachim listed, but the record image is unreadable. Perhaps there were more children.

1880 census IL Cook Chicago
747 N. Halsted
John Ludwig 62
Caroline 52
Minnie 17
Annie 14 (Dorothea?)

John Ladwig d. 31 Jan 1884 lived 747 N. Halsted buried Graceland Cemetery

Caroline Ladwig d. 5 Jun 1900 lived 747 N. Halsted buried Graceland Cemetery

You can see both these dc on Family Search.

Do you know how Dorothea got to Nebraska to already be married to Otto by the Nebraska 1885 census? Did one of her other siblings go there? Could she have been a mail order bride?

Andrea

I've searched the 1870 and 1880 census, to no avail.

She went by the name Laura. She married Otto A. Hirsch reportedly in Norfolk, NE in 1885. She died in Glenwood Springs, CO in 1950.

Thank you for any help!

I too am looking for the family of my probable GG-grandmother, Dorothy Laura Louise Ludwig, who married Otto A. Hirsch in NE, and lived in Kansas City, MO, then Glenwood Springs, CO.

She was born in Niles Center, Cook County, IL on 13OCT1866. Should be easy to find, right? Wrong! I've searched the 1870 and 1880 census records, from IL to IA to NE to MO. Nothing. Nada.

Her parents were born in Germany too. Her obituary mentioned nobody other than her daughter, Mabel.

Just trying to understand the generations.....I can't get past Pearl, then Catherine was her mother and then, Josephine was Catherine's mother. My trail stops at Josephine, and all I have is a name there.

Jo Ann supposedly has a paper that shows something that backs this up, but she's never shared it with me or confirmed. Sounds like she may have some great info for you...I really hope so. Since Pearl's ancestors are yours, too, if I come across anything, I'll be glad to share with you. Also, I do have her obituary and all of her funeral arrangement papers. Ruby (my grandmother) handled everything when Pearl died. Found a folder with alot of stuff in it about a couple more of the brothers. Will be glad to share if you'd like any of this stuff.

She will eventually answer. You just have to let it ring and ring....sometimes as many as 20 - 25 times. It takes her a bit to get to the phone. We will tell her you're trying to get in touch with her, so she'll be expecting your call. There is no time that she goes to bed or won't answer. Good luck!

Obit of Mrs. Jesse (Anna Ludwig) Moore 1925

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. JESSE MOORE
JANUARY 8, 1925

Mrs. Jesse Moore passed away at her home in this city Friday (Jan. 2) afternoon at 1 o'clock following a year's illness with dropsy.
Funeral services were held Sunday forenoon at 10:30 at the Chatsworth Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. August Rettberg. The services were very largely attended. The burial was in the Chatsworth cemetery.
Anna Ludwig was born in Germany August 23, 1870 and emigrated to America when 15 years of age. She became ill with diphtheria upon arrival in this country and was taken to a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. As soon as she had sufficiently recovered she came to Chatsworth.
In 1836 she was married to Anton Kemnitz. Four sons were born to this union. Twenty-six years ago Mr. Kemnitz died. They were then living on a farm and the widow continued there for two years, then moving to the village of Chatsworth. August 23, 1903, she was married to Jesse Moore. Two daughters were born to them.
The deceased had much to endure of sickness. Thirteen years ago she submitted to a serious operation from which she seemed to fully recover. Five years ago, however her physical condition became so impaired that she was taken to Peoria for treatment. Again she rallied for several years, until about a year ago her health again began to fail.
She was confined to her bed for the greater part of the time during the last nine months of her life. She suffered much. Her illness first appeared to be diabetes, later developing late enlargement of the heart and finally dropsy. Only a strong constitution and patience enabled her to live as long as she did.
She leaved to mourn for her, her husband, four sons -- Jake, Ernest, George and Frank Kemnitz, two daughters -- Mrs. Ruth Hornickel and Miss Anna Moore. The latter very faithfully and lovingly cared for her mother during those long months of sickness. There are also four step-sons, one sister in Germany and other relatives.

Dear Robert,

I enjoyed receiving your message. I basically took a break from Ancestry.com about a year ago after I had gone about as far as I could go. I spend most of my time now writing novels and trying to get them published, since retiring as a Research Advisor from Eli Lilly and Company four years ago.

My Dad grew up in Independence, MO and I went back with him once and met a couple of cousins, one of whom was named Cecil Ludwig. But that trip was in 1964 so I know little more about the contemporary members of the Ludwig family.

I did know that Louvisa Norvell was born Noble, but I did not know who her parents were. I also got confused trying to work backwards from Jacob Ludwig as I believe there was another Jacob who was his father and that was where I lost a solid trail.

I plan to return to this some day and will certainly post everything that I find. I would like to post the images that I made of the relevant family Bible pages, but haven't made time to do so yet. Your message encourages me to do so. Best wishes, cousin, I look forward to keeping in contact. My email is ludwigrick@aol.com. I am retired so I don't check email every day, but I do check it pretty often. My wife and I live in Lahaina, Hawaii (on the island of Maui).Aloha

James Richard (Rick) Ludwig

Rick,

I was very pleased to see your message, though I'm a little late in finding it... almost 2 years late.

Thanks. Your information was very valuable to me, and I hope that you are still wanting more info. I can direct you to where I came by some of my information by pointing you to the biography of Isaac Ludwig in the History of Allen Co., OH., which details some of the siblings of our William Ludwig who married Ann Jemima Webber and identifies his parents as Jacob Ludwig (who fought in the War of 1812) and Mary Elizabeth Fink. It also gives two more named generations going back to a Revolutionary War soldier, though these earliest facts are a bit murky and harder to figure out, and I haven't figured out how all the pieces fit together with other Ludwig and Ludwick families dating to the Revolution that are possibly related, including the families of Molly Pitcher and the ancestors of the billionaire Daniel K. Ludwig who died in 1992.

Several separate Ludwig / Ludwick families have similar rumors about their family origins involving George Washington and the baking of bread, or that they were Hessian Soldiers who admired America and stayed after the war.

Only DNA tests could sort out which Ludwig's are related from that far back, I'm afraid, but so many of their stories lead to the same places with similar names that it seems likely that many of them are related. But I'm not sure if anyone out there is interested in going down that line of DNA investigation because it costs money and takes time. You and I are clearly from the same family line, but how we fit into the larger tree is still not clear to me.

I'd love to see the family bible someday, or at least get a good copy of it. I'm a descendant of George Washington Ludwig, William's brother. And my brother currently lives near Index, Mo. where William's wife Ann Jemima is buried and where William Henry Ludwig married Louvisa Norvell. (By the way, you may or may not know that Louvisa Norvell was her married name and that her maiden name was Noble, and that her father's name was Mathew Noble and her mother's name was Sarah Henderson.)

I would be happy to share any of my information, but I don't know how to contact you.

You can contact me at ludwig3655 @yahoo.com (remove the space).

Thanks again. Sorry about the wait, but I had given up on checking these message boards long ago. Hopefully you will check this one soon and we can communicate again before another 2 years, or more, go by.

Your 3rd cousin, once removed,

Robert Ludwig.
Dave,

Thank you for forwarding this info to me. There were 2 Ferdinand Wilson Ludwig from Cleveland. I will have to get the obituary and look up the death certificate to see if this is my 2nd grandfather. I have very little info on him and felt it was a dead end. This is a great lead.

Any info you can add would be awesome. I would appreciate an updated photo when the headstone looks cleaner. I see that there are about 50 Ludwig buried in Green Lawn Cemetery. I was not aware of any Columbus Ludwig so I will have to give that a look also.

Regards,

Steve Chimera
Kent, Ohio

Aunt Katherine was the sister of Ruby Ludwig Wade, my grandmother. Other bros and sis were Henrietta (still living in Detroit Michigan), Joseph (deceased, lived in Anguilla, MS), Adam (deceased), Eugene (no info), Felix (no info), Travis (deceased), James (no info), Vernon (no info), Helen "Babe" (deceased), Juanita (no info), and Jane (no info). Ruby's house was the "homeplace"....many, many memories there with family in and out, sometimes living there for a time on and off, like Katherine. Ruby saved alot of records, even kept dairies throughout several years. I understand Ruby's daughter has a ton of stuff, and I have a bit myself...I'll go back through when I can to see if I have anything that may be of interest to you. This weekend, I am cataloging my Dad's (Charles Wallace Hughes Sr) vinyl record collection and came across a couple that had KMoore written on the labels....small world, huh? I appreciate anything you could find out more about Pearl's ancestry. There is supposedly a record where a soldier purchased an indian princess ancester of Pearl's for $25 in Oklahoma and brought her to Mississippi. Both my parents talked about Pearl's mother being full blooded indian. Ruby's daughter may hold any info you might like to have since she was living there and would be very familiar with family members more than I would be. If you think you might like to contact her, I can see if she'd be ok with my giving you her ph#. Sadly, she is not in the best of health these days. And as far as I know, she just might be the keeper of the most knowledge of Ruby's side of the family.

the sad thing is I only met her once as my dad said that she had moved to Kansas with his sister and my dad moved with my grand dad,I heard my grandfather was adopted and that his name was matthews but thats another story. My dad had a sister wich were her, grandmas, children. As far as specifics go in the Ludwig line I would like any information you have.My dad keeps mentioning he had a aunt Juanita, but it isn't mentioned on ancestry or any other website.I think I read something to the effect that Pearl or one of her siblings was born in indian territory but dont know if she is of native american decent,I'll have to look further.Who were your Parents

I was around "Aunt Catherine" quite a bit growing up. There was not alot I knew about her because I was too young to think about things that I wish I would have asked "way back then". I knew she was or had been married because her last name being Moore, but didn't know there was ever any children. Is there anything specific you'd like to know? I am trying to follow a few stories about Pearl's line being of Native American ancestry. Do you happen to know anything about that?
