I recently learned that if he served on a jury or took care of the railroad, etc... the family may have been exempt from paying taxes that year. Follow the money.

Tax records
Land
State Census
If they were traveling west, Try Canada! they might have gone north of Lake Erie. Also Just learned might have traveled during winter, no wheels stuck in the mud, travel over rivers more easily.

Hi, Elaine! I have quite a bit of information on Samuel Luman, born Samuel Lewman, son of Reason Lewman, son of Moses Lewman of Allegany Co., Maryland. I have a four generation report of Moses' descendants that is almost sixty pages, which might be too long for this format. Let me know what word format you want and I can attach a file and send it to you. Take Care, Charles Lewman

Hi... Did any of your Luman family reside in Brazil? My grandmother - Rachel Jessie Freeman who called herself Regina, married a Mr. Luman I think in Sao Paulo but I am unable to find anything. She would have died about 1956 or thereabouts as that is the last we heard of her.
Just some clarification. I visited the Lyon Cemetry Just outside of London Mills' Ill. The graves of Willams and Mary A as well as many other Luman's are there. I was told that Jesse's grave was there but can not longer be fouond because of a Tornado that went through there long ago. Decendats of D.O. Luman should show Velda instead of Belda and should also add Leonard Lee Luman

Hi, there! Here is what I have on Jesse Luman married to Mary Shreeves. There was a lot of interaction between the Shreeve and Lewman families for a while.
Descendants of Jesse Luman
Generation No. 1
1. JESSE1 LUMAN was born 1807 in Franklin Co., Ohio, and died 1856 in Fulton Co., Illinois. He married MARY SHREEVES 16 Jan 1833 in Franklin Co., Ohio, daughter of THOMAS SHREVES. Bernard Luman worked in the coal mining industry for 32 years. In 1975, he filed a request for benefits under the Black Lung Benefits Act, 30 U.S.C. sec.sec. 901-45, and in 1977, he died. An administrative law judge granted Luman's, and his widow's, claims, and the Benefits Review Board affirmed. Between 1993 and 1996, Midland Coal Company filed three requests to reconsider the Board's original decision, and then appealed to this court. Because we conclude that Midland Coal Company did not timely file its appeal, we dismiss this petition for review for lack of jurisdiction.
I.
Bernard Luman worked as a coal miner for 32 years for Midland Coal Company and its predecessors. In June 1974, Luman was hospitalized and treated by Dr. Keith Frankhauser for bronchial pneumonia and pulmonary emphysema. Dr. Frankhauser concluded that "this man qualifies for black lung disease because he has had pulmonary fibrosis and certainly has marked dyspnea and has had difficulty in breathing at times." On February 18, 1975, Luman filed a request for benefits with the U.S. Department of Labor under the Black Lung Benefits Act, 30 U.S.C. sec.sec. 901-945. In May 1975, at the request of the Department of Labor, Dr. David Holden examined Luman. Dr. Holden x-rayed Luman, but the x-ray did not reveal pneumoconiosis. However, Dr. Holden diagnosed Luman with moderately severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which caused shortness of breath. Dr. Holden also found that this condition was related to Luman's coal mine employment. In August 1975, Dr. Frankhauser again examined Luman, this time at the request of the Department of Labor. Dr. Frankhauser again diagnosed pulmonary emphysema, and found that it was causally related to Luman's coal mine employment. He also noted that Luman's pulmonary condition restricted his activities and caused "marked dyspnea."

In 1976, Luman was hospitalized at the Galesburg Cottage Hospital for having a low white blood cell count and external hemorrhoids. After a six-week hospital stay, he was transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Once there, Luman was diagnosed and treated for Hodgkin's disease. The actual medical records from the Mayo Clinic are not a part of the record, but five letters from Mayo Clinic treating physicians to Luman's physician at the Galesburg Cottage Hospital are. None of these letters discuss pneumoconiosis. On January 4, 1977, Luman died; the death certificate stated that the cause of death was Hodgkin's disease.

In 1978, Luman's widow, Lucille Luman, filed a survivor's claim with the Department of Labor. In 1980, the Department of Labor made an initial finding that Luman died due to pneumoconiosis, and was entitled to benefits. It also determined that Midland, as Luman's last employer for a duration of at least one year, was liable for these benefits. The Department of Labor informed Midland of these findings and that it would start paying benefits if Midland refused to do so. Midland refused to pay, challenging both Luman's entitlement to benefits and also its own liability for benefits. At this time, the Department of Labor began paying Mrs. Luman benefits. 1

After unsuccessful attempts to resolve the dispute, the Department of Labor referred the case to the Office of the Administrative Law Judges. An evidentiary hearing was held on August 13, 1985, and in May 1986, the ALJ ruled that the medical evidence failed to establish that Luman died of pneumoconiosis and was entitled to benefits. Mrs. Luman appealed this decision to the Benefits Review Board, which reversed and remanded the decision of the ALJ. In so doing, the Benefits Review Board instructed the ALJ to consider whether Mr. Luman was entitled to a regulatory presumption that he died of pneumoconiosis. Two possible presumptions were applicable: the "lay evidence" presumption, 20 C.F.R. sec. 727.203(a)(5), and the "25-year" presumption, 20 C.F.R. sec. 727.204(a). 2
FOOTNOTES
Footnote 1 Lucille Luman died on March 8, 1993, and Midland has informed us that her estate has been administratively closed. However, this case is not moot because the Department of Labor may recover from Midland the interim benefits paid to Mrs. Luman if Midland is held liable. 30 U.S.C. sec. 934(b). Thus, it appears that the real parties in interest are the Department of Labor and Midland.

Notes for LUCILLE N. YOUNG:
Source: Ancestry.com
Obituary
Peoria Journal Star, March 10, 1993
LONDON MILLS - - Lucille N. Luman, 82, of Rural Route 1 died at 6:10 p.m. Monday, March 8, 1993, at her home. Born Aug. 22, 1910, in London Mills to Charles and Amanda Maud Hummel Young, she married Bernard J. Luman on Aug. 26, 1933, in Decatur. He died Jan. 4, 1977. One brother and one sister also preceded her in death. Surviving are four sons, Charles of St. Paul, Minn., Roger of Peoria, Ronald of Oviedo, Fla., and Donald of DeKalb; two sisters, Ruth Johnson of Williams Bay, Wis., and Margaret Shreeves of Galesburg; 10 grandchilcren; and one great-grandchild. Any additional information you might have or come up with would be greatly appreciated.

You are obviously well versed in ancestry.

Hi Kluman108,

Like my James Luman born in 1806, record searching is tough -- these people will not show up until the 1830 Census at the earliest. Searching the 1820 census may turn up some candidates as the parents, however.

Franklin county does not appear to be in the 1820 schedules;
it must have been formed out of another county in later years. Examining the history of Franklin county may help find the appropriate census roll to search on archives.org

I found this map of counties in 1895 :
http://www.heritagepursuit.com/oh_1895OHIO.jpg

Looking in FamilySearch Record Search, I find one possible candidate -- although the name is spelled Looman -- this is a marriage record in 1833 that may make sense with your Jesse born in 1806 ... does the bride's name ring a bell?

Groom's Name: Jesse Looman
Groom's Birth Date:
Groom's Birthplace:
Groom's Age:
Bride's Name: Mary Shrieves
Bride's Birth Date:
Bride's Birthplace:
Bride's Age:
Marriage Date: 17 Jan 1833
Marriage Place: Franklin,Ohio
Groom's Father's Name:
Groom's Mother's Name:
Bride's Father's Name:
Bride's Mother's Name:
Groom's Race:
Groom's Marital Status:
Groom's Previous Wife's Name:
Bride's Race:
Bride's Marital Status:
Bride's Previous Husband's Name:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M51335-1
System Origin: Ohio-ODM
Source Film Number: 285142
Reference Number:
Collection: Ohio Marriages, 1800-1958

Good luck with your search,

Liz.

I have some papers that were transcribed that indicate the a Jesse Luman was born in Franklin county Ohio in circa 1806. I am thinking that he was from Samuel Paxton Luman's family but have not been able to confirm that. Anything you have would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching relations of James Luman, born VA 1805/6,
probably a son of Rezin/Reason Luman/Lewman.

He resided in West Virginia, in a township that changed boundaries over the 1800-1850 time frame: it has been part of Wood County, Harrison County, Tyler County and Ohio County (most recent to most historical).

I found several Luman/Lewman households in the 1820 Census for Virginia, in counties which were to become West Virginia:

1. Tyler County (roll 140)
http://www.archive.org/stream/populationsc18200140unit#page/...

Moses Luman
1 male 26-45
1 female 26-45
2 males under 10
1 female under 10

2. Wood County (roll 138)
http://www.archive.org/stream/populationsc18200138unit#page/...

John Lewman
1 male 10-16
2 males 16-25)
1 male over 45
1 female 10-16

3. Ohio County
http://www.archive.org/stream/populationsc18200140unit#page/...

John Leamon

text and numbers barely legible -- need to see a better copy of this page -- but this is the page.

Does anyone have connection to these families?

Kind regards,

Liz.

My husband's family is descended from Samuel Luman (Lewman)and Delilah Plummer. James Washington Luman is his great grandfather. I have found a Preston Duval Luman (my husband's grandfather's name)marrying in Oregon and having a child. We know he married my husband's grandmother (Eliza Bennett) some time later in Kansas. We think the name is too unusual for it to be a coincidence, especially since both claim to be the sons of James Washington Luman. Can you help us unravel this? Elaine Luman, Texas

Hi, Liz! Sorry I have been away this past year or so. Everything I have on Old World Lewmans have them in southern England. A Richard Lewman's will dated 1535 had him in a town outside London. The others are located in Devonshire and Somerset. I am trying to find out if Caleb and Moses are related to the Moses and Joshua of Somerset. It may take a while. I guess if it was easy, everyone would do it. Take Care, Chuck Lewman

HI Charles,

Yes, we have had prior correspondence on this family;
in 2006 I posted this message on Genforum (forgot to post
it on Ancestry at the same time). I am more convinced than ever that the following is true; it appears that there are no further biographical details in the Dudte genealogy, however:

I think we have a connection through the following person:

vi. JAMES LEWMAN, b. Abt. 1806, Allegany Co., Maryland

son of Rezin and Sarah Lewman, from the notes you made on Cornelius C. Luman, b. KY 1837. You indicate the will of Rezin mentions wife Sarah, and nine children. Can you send me the details on that family -- especially James LEWMAN.

I believe that this James Lewman is the same James Luman I have been seeking to connect. There are several facts in common between the files you have and recent files I have looked over:

1. US Census, 1840. Wood County, Virginia 1840 indicates James Luman, wife, daughter (0-5) matching family profile at that time,

2. Biography of Abner Luman, and John Luman, sons of James Luman, indicating that James Luman was born in Maryland, and moved to Virginia as a young boy. (Progressive Men of Wyoming ... publication details available),

3. Contact with 4th cousin on Luman side indicating that another son of Abner Luman, Richard, was named Richard Barthamew Luman -- indicating a family name in common with your Barton (Bartholomew Lewman).

further from your notes "1812, Barton was in Ohio Co, Virginia (WV) I found the census record:

4. US Census, 1810. Elizabeth, Ohio County, Virginia, indicates Barton LOOMAN family with wife, 2 sons (0-5) 2 sons (5-10), and daughters (1 at 0-5) (1 at 10-15)

What further proof would be required for me to "claim" this James Lewman and his line as ancestors?

Liz.

Hi Chuck, Happy New Year To You and your family!

I have recently come across a publication which indicates that Reason Luman (Maryland to Kentucky) was of IRISH descent ... this asserts that Samuel Luman, son of Reason Luman, came with his parents to America to Maryland in 1785. Do you have information in the Dudte book which agrees or disputes this point?

The book is "More Marylanders to Kentucky, 1778-1828, by Henry C. Peden (p 101, Luman)

Please see the link below:

http://books.google.com/books?id=nC2gqS2X2KQC&pg=PA101&a...

Kind regards,

Liz Kolster

Hi, there! I have two Jesse's that fit the timeline you have. The name Lewman/Looman/Luman was used interchangeably till the frontier education caught up with the early members of the family. It is hard to correct the spelling if you can't read or write.
The first one:

Generation No. 1

1. REASON2 LEWMAN (MOSES1) was born Abt. 1765 in Maryland, and died Abt. 1830 in Lewis Co., Kentucky. He married SARAH LEWMAN Abt. 1786 in Allegany Co., Maryland. She was born Abt. 1770, and died Aft. 1836.

Notes for REASON LEWMAN:
1. Sources for this family group and descendants provided by Bill Dudte of Knob Koster, Missouri, 1998 and June, 1999.
3. Will written April 24, 1829. Probated July 18, 1836. Will mentioned wife, Sarah, and nine children. Source: Index to Kentucky Wills to 1851 - The Testators, Jackson, Teaples, et. al. - 1977. Lewis County Will Book C, pg. 150, 1836 (date of probate).
4. He first appears in the 1788 tax list for Cumberland Valley Township, Bedford County, PA, and continues to appear in Cumberland Valley Township until the 1796 tax list. Then in 1800 Federal Census, he appears living next to his father in the Cumberland Section, Allegany County, MD. He again appears in the 1810 Federal Census living in Allegany County, MD, but by the 1820 Federal Census appears in the Lewis County, KY area.

Greetings!

My apologies for such a delay in reply ... recently found marriage record for Landora Luman and Evan Todhunter, 28 August 1859, published 1 September 1859 in the Lecompton Kansas National Democrat ... Link below

http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/douglas/marriage/ma...

This puts the family in Douglas County Kansas about the time of the proposed death date for James Luman in Douglas at 1865.
If you can get a copy of the announcement from the Newspaper, it may list the parents of the bride. Landora was the eldest child of James and Martha Luman.

Regards to all Luman cousins.

Liz.

Re: Luman connection

I hope I can get it right this time. My wife is descended from James Luman and Martha Ankrum. She is the g-grand daughter of their son Richard Barthlemew Luman and Margaret Melissa Moody. They lived in Alba, MO and are buried in Purcell, MO. According to articles in the "Progressive Men of the State of Wyoming", A. W. Bowen & Co., 1903, James died in Douglas County, KS in 1865. My wife and I stopped there this summer and visited both the genealogy office and the public library . We could find no information about either James or Martha. I believe that Martha was listed in the 1880 census as a member of her son Richard's household on Alba, Missouri. I have corresponded with Liz Kolster in the past and have sent her an email about out lack of success in Douglas Co., KS. Any information about James and Martha would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gene Caplinger

James Luman and Martha Ankrum

I read the querey you posted to Liz Kolster. My wife is descended from James and Martha through Abner's brother Richard Barthlemew Luman and Margaret Melissa Moody. James and Martha are her gg-grandparents. Articles in the "Progressive Men of the State of Wyoming" (A. W. Bowen & Co., 1903) had brief notes that James had died in Douglas Co. KS in 1865 (there were entries for both Abner and his brother John). My wife and I stopped there this summer and visited the local genealogy office and later the public library, but were unable to find any information about James or Martha. I believe Martha was listed in the 1880 census as a member of Richard's household in Alba, MO. Richard and Melissa (as she was known) are buried in Purcell, MO. Any information that you find concerning James and Martha would be greatly appreciated. Gene Caplinger
