I found a reference to my grandparents, Thomas K Lumley, Jr and Johnnie A Green, and John and Ella Lumley. Our Lumley bible had a note that stated that Thomas K and John married twin sisters, Johnnie A Green and Ella. I have not located any info on any generology sites to verify this note.

I went through school in West Deer Township PA with Arnold Booth. I remember his parents and I believe his lovely and gracious mother's name was Dorothy. She was very kind to our group of friends and we spent time with her and Arnold at their home. I am searching for addresses for classmates as our 50th high school reunion will be in 2012. I traced Arnold, I believe it is 'our' Arnold to 2002 in Florida. I just have memories of Dorothy and their home but no further historical data.

Mr. Frey, thanks for the information. I'm afraid I don't have much to give you. There was a John R. Lumley who died in 1905 in Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 28 (still the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland). I don't know his wife's name. I don't know if that is the same John Lumley you are looking for or not.

I checked with my father, who is the brother of Rut's second wife, and he didn't know anything about any of Rut's father's family. Rut was raised by his aunt on his mother's side, Elsie Jarvis. My father had always been told that Rut was an orphan. Rut does have one surviving grandson of his adopted daughter, Jamie Willis, who lives on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I don't have any contact information for you. I have heard he runs a coffee company with his wife, so he shouldn't be too hard to find. He may have heard something through the years of other relatives.

Hope this helps you.

Many thanks for your information. James Rutherford ("Rut") was the 5th successive eldest son of the Lumley Family to bear the name. The first JRL was born in England in 1773: his father was James and his mother Alice Rutherford. The next 2 JRLs were born in India and "Rut" and his father were born in the USA, Rut in 1901. 19 years later the family name was revived when my father-in-law James Rutherford Lumley was born, a descendant of the eldest half-brother of the JRL who settled in the USA. AS far as I know neither of these JRLs knew of the existence of the other when they both died in 1999.

My research into the Lumley family started in 2006, too late to gather evidence form either of these JRLs, they were, as far as I have been able to discover, the last descendents in the unbroken male line of James and Alice Lumley but there are some branches that I have been unable to trace. Rut had an Uncle John B (or M) lumley who married Rena B Lumley in 1898 but I have been unable to discover if there were any children though I suspect John died before he was 34. Any information to flesh out any of this family in the USA would be most welcome.

Again many thanks

Martin Frey
If you are still looking for descendants, I have information on James Rutherford "Rut" Lumley, who lived in Eastville, Virginia. He was a retired pharmacist at the time of his death. He was survived by his second wife, Gladys Nordstrom Lumley, who had two children at the time he married her, whom he adopted. Gladys and his two adopted children have since died also.

Alan,

The "Lumley Family Tree" is the one I put up as part of my attempt to flush out some descendants in the US. I couldn't find the £Johnston Watson" tree - search produced so many hits making the needle/haystack problem seem a doddle!

If you want earlier Lumleys I can take you back to about 1640 if that's any use to you - let me know on martinfrey at clara dot co dot uk

I can't recall if we've corresponded before but Ida remarried Frank Edmiston and she passed away during childbirth in AR. Now if you want to look on the 1920 census for AR you might index her as Ida Nelson. This was because Frank Edmiston used his step-dad's name for a while and he shows up on that census as Perse Nelson but the index shows P????(they couldn't read it). Ida and the kids are there as well as FRank's mother Lotte Nelson.

Samuel Lumley of Montgomery/Cincinnati, Ohio

Just learned that my ggreatgrandfather was Samuel Lumley, born about 1838 in Ohio.
I found him in the 1870 census in Covington, Ky, working as a stable boss, living with wife, Caroline Wines and children, Stella, Charles, William and Henry.
I found him in the 1880 census, age 40, agent selling buggies, with Caroline, Stella, Charles, William, Harry, Flora and James.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions in finding his parents and what happened to him after 1880. He is not listed with Caroline in the 1900 census and family says that he deserted the family.
Thank you!!!
Clark County Iowa John Lumley possibly Daniel Lumley, too

Any info on John Lumley born in Illinois about 1848 and married to Sara J. Byers and last known living here in Clark County, Iowa.

His brothers are David born in 1852 and Daniel born in 1854 in Iowa . I have tracked and traced David through every Census starting in 1860 through 1930. I know David married Francis Howard and had 13 children. The baby was my great-grandfather.
Daniel married Mary per the Ks census and had 2 sons Charles born in 1873 and John born in 1877. The 1880 census puts them back in Iowa- Walnut Township Polk County and then I can't find anything else about his family.

I can't find ANYTHING about the parents possibly the mother's name was Margaret because I find her living with David in KS and later with John in Iowa. Per the many Censuses the Father was from England??? Are there other brothers/sisters?

I know this thread is old, but maybe we have the same Lumley's and I need help...

The mentioned Lumley Reunion was held in Sedan, KS at the County Fairgrounds when I was growing up. It is now held at the Senior Center in Peru, KS usually just before or the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. (Mostly the children and grandchildren of James & Chloe Farner Lumley and Robert Oliver and Christena Farner Lumley)

I have been researching the parents- David C Lumley and Francis Melvina Howard. They had 13 children and are buried near Caney at El Caddo Cemetery.

I was born in Salem, Washington County, Indiana and was very interested in the early Lumley names. My research led me to believe that the early lumley girls were the daughters of William and Sara McFall Lumley. They are on the 1820 washington county census. They were married in Kentucky and I think they were on the 1890 census there. Sara Mcfall's parents were very interesting because her dad made the kentucky long rifle famous by shooting the only british casualty and Barbara was taken by the indians when Fort in kentucky was blasted during the revolution.

I guess Sara would have been one of the youngest survivors of the brutal march to detroit.

George Lumley Geolumley@yahoo.com

Frank Deforest Lyons (b. 7/9/1882 d. 10/11/1958) was my grandfather. He married (2/14/1900) Jennie Mary Lumley(b. 1/18/1883 d. 10/11/1958). Jennie's father was Robert Lumley and her mother was Mary Stacey. In our family history discussions, it was mentioned that a Lyons brother & sister married a Lumley brother & sister. (For Maureen Bianchi: In addition, I also have an aunt, Dorothy Mae Lyons (b. 7/12/1922 d. 12/2/1985)who married Frank Joseph Bianchi. I believe we are also related.)

To "Grandaughter Pam",

"Allen had 2 sisters his mother was Elizabeth Graves and father thought to be Erwin.1860 census for Lowndes Co Al. has Elizabeth as widow and living with her father, Thomas Graves. After that his mother and grandparents died."

His grandmother Dollie A (Fant) Graves was still alive in 1900. See Butler Co Al for HH of William E and Mattie Taylor.

"He then ran away from his gaurdians as a teen."

I wonder if that was Dempsey Davis of Lowndes Co Al. Listed in the Davis HH in 1870 was Allen Lumley (15, Al).
Lumley George & Eliza, Scarborough, Yorkshire

I am looking for more information on George Lumley, born approx 1864 in West Ayton Yorks, living in Cumboots Scalby, Scarborough during the 1911 census. Occupation Estate Labourer. His wife was Eliza Lumley, nee Robinson, born Burniston, Yorks approx 1870.

I am not related to the family, my grandmother (Beatrice Abram) is listed on the 1911 census, aged 4, as being a boarder with them. I am curious as to how she ended up there as she was previously known to be in the Scarborough workhouse. It's a long shot but worth a try .......
